Tamiya have a well earned reputation for high quality, detailing and excellent production techniques producing models that are accurate to their scale, attractive, clean and nicely detailed. This model is no exception to that rule and is precisely what people have come to expect from Tamiya. However, these models always look a 'little' plain when they're made. Like something is missing. Well, most ships of any scale have railings and a whole bunch of fittings that are either unconvincing or not possible at certain scales. This is where Eduard come in. Brass etched plates containing all the railings and fine detailing you could wish for. It's not really surprising how many Tamiya models have complementary Eduard brass available for them. After all, why would you spend time making great add-ons for a mediocre model, when there is excellence a short step away? This model is a bit of a challenge to build due to a large number of small parts. Painting similarly can be a bit of a challenge because of the size. Brush painting is likely to leave ridges or tracks that will stand out like a sore thumb on a large model like this - so, airbrush is going to be the way to go. Smaller parts can be hand-painted with a brush but the hull, superstructure and decking will look better sprayed to be honest. No glue or paints are supplied with this model. You will need a good pair of side-cutters and either very fine sandpaper or a fine grade file to take off the small burrs that will be left on the pieces when you cut them away from the sprue. Tweezers would also be a good idea as some of these parts are not designed for fingers. Finished it's a beautiful model and a nice representation of the New Jersey. With the extra brass sprues from Eduard to fit this model, a whole extra dimension of detail is added that makes this model pop in all the right ways. Mind, fitting the etched brass is a whole other challenge in itself.I have a number of Tamiya models and always look to them first for any model I want to build, moving on to other manufacturers if they don't make what I want. I would be a very happy camper indeed if Tamiya tackled a few modern warships as well but I'm not complaining. I love what they do and I have yet to have a single complaint for any model I have purchased from this manufacturer, well, perhaps the ever expanding price. There are hours of occupation in this model and it's a good addition to any collection. With care, attention to the task and patience this is a great model, even if you decide to forego the brass etched extras.
