I’ve been using these for a few days now, so this is still very much a first impression than a full review, but since my experience with these earphones is better than I feared based on other reviews, I thought I’d share my thoughts.Whatever you think of the design, I think the WF-1000X are pretty unobtrusive when worn. They’re comfortable, too – at least for the short spells I tend to wear them. I use the Sony WF-1000X alongside a pair of wired Bose QC20 at my desk and while I prefer Bose’s tip design, I have no complaints about Sony’s – other than they need more faffing and pushing for a snug fit. They do ‘crinkle’ when you push them into the ear canal, so maybe some sort of pressure release would be good, but it’s a minor issue. The case is small enough to slip into a trouser pocket, but it’s a touch fiddly to open – there’s no lip to slip a fingernail under and the locking mechanism is a simple clip. The earphones also clip into place mechanically and, again, this is a bit fiddly. Again, these are all minor issues, but the case isn’t remotely in the same league as the AirPods’ for ease of use.Sound quality, however, is something else. I bought these for use on the train/tube, as a wireless replacement for my Bose set and sound quality is noticeably better – and I already consider the Bose to be pretty good.I’d put the noise cancelling performance since by side, but I’m not sure how ‘active’ the Sony’s tech is. Switching on the Bose gives an immediate audible reduction in ambient noise, but that’s because they earphones don’t create a seal – the Sony’s do. Their sound-isolation ear tips already do a pretty good job of reducing unwanted noise and enabling active NC makes little audible difference. There’s certainly some, but do wonder if there are situations where the seemingly limited active NC may come unstuck. That said, since the sound quality is so good anyway, this isn’t much of a complaint.I tend to pause music while reading on my commute and enjoy the relative noise-cancelled silence, and the WF-1000X work as well as the Bose QC20 for that. Ambient noise reduction isn’t absolute with either pair – train noise is drastically reduced, but announcements can still be clearly heard. That’s a good thing, for me.I don’t use these for calls, so can’t comment on that, but the ‘external sound’ option that supposedly lets in some ambient audio seems to do nothing – I can’t hear enough to hold a conversation with it enabled and both earphones in place. The Bose QC20s are much better in this regard, so perhaps that’s a measure of microphone quality.I like the physical buttons for playback control and (not-so-useful) active NC switching – they’re easily located and work with gloves. A 60-minute each-way commute means the 3-hour battery life isn’t an issue for me, nor is the 2x recharge with the case – I’m never far away from a USB port for a recharge. And finally, I’ve had no connectivity issues so far with my iPhone 7 Plus in my right front trouser pocket, or an inside coat pocket. There is some mildly disorientating channel ‘switching’ when playback first starts, but that only lasts for a moment – I’ve had no dropouts while listening. It’s still early days for the WF-1000X, but I’m pretty impressed so far and having tried and returned the AirPods, I think these are a considerably better wireless option for an extra £50 – though perhaps not as superficially slick.

It feels like we are within the age of Bluetooth earphones in their test stages. Like previous technology before it (MP3 players, mobile phones etc.) where the tech has become available and affordable, but companies are still trying to fine tune the product. With this in mind I see these as the best in-earphones currently available, but it's not without its faults. The sound is really good, as is the noise cancelling. Download the 'Headphones Connect' app to get the best out of them. You can change the equalizer and sound control depending on your movements (walking, staying, train etc.). The gap in sound as it changes between sound environments is a little annoying though. It turned out my earphones were set to bass boost before I had downloaded the app. Many people have mentioned the delay in sound when watching TV/films. I seem to have found a way around this - When the video is playing pause it, then push the lock button. Then re enter the phone (passcode etc.) and the video should pop back up. If you now play the video the sound should be in sync. It has worked for me with Amazon Prime and YouTube, but it sometimes takes up to three attempts. The other complaint has often been the charging of the earphones in their case. I have found no problem with this and wonder whether it's because you can sometimes put them in the case and not lock them in properly. Each ear piece should click in on both the left and the right sides and then you should see the ear piece light go red.The case is a little big for carrying around in your pocket, so I hope to see and improvement in this. Also the design of the earphone looks a lot like the Bluetooth hands free kits everyone had in the Noughties. I much prefer the ear pieces that are more hidden in the ear.Otherwise I really, really like these.

Excellent earphones that benefit from using the app to control and customise settings. Work perfectly with ace sound in most situations apart from places heavily congested with nearby bluetooth users. I use on train, home and buses without a problem. They charge quickly and not had issues with battery life. Do try all the tips to find your right fit and material, there are loads provided and it impacts sound quality and noise cancelling substantially, the user should have a fit that places the tips snugly and securely into the ear without sound leakage.I noticed a few people mentioned they don't rate the noise cancelling which is definitely not my experience - use the app to find the setting that is right you you.I compare these to AKG N60NC and the high end Sony MDR NC's I used to have and they compare well.Do use the app and set to priority on connection if needed. This avoids connection drops and still has ace sound. I wore today on train to London, on tube and walking through city and only had two tiny drop outs in all that time. They seem far better at holding a stable connection after a few recharges and better after a week of use. The level of drop-outs is far less.It is not immediately obvious from use but taking the earphones from the case automatically switches them on and putting them back in on charge (flashing red) will turn them off.*Update* - 17 October 2017 - The app has been updated which now enables:1. EQ control with a range of presets and associated bass levels2. Track play, forward, back and pause from within the app3. Volume control.4. Standby with Power SavingThis bodes well for the future of these earphones.

The noise cancelling for these completely wireless headphones blows me away. Loud can jouneys as a passenger from rattleing and bad noise isolation become near silent. I actually was shocked when I took the Earphones out by how much Sound they cancelled out.The adaptive noise cancelling is ok, however I don’t tend to use it as it drains battery quicker. 3hrs off battery life if fine for myself. Charges in my pocket with the case perfectly. Have had 9hrs every time with the charge case. Very happy. Now, Sony’s typical clear and precise audio signature is here. They sound excellent considering what they are. Deep precise bass, lovely mids and blissful highs. All the detail is there! That’s through Bluetooth, using iPhone 7plus and Tidal music service with HIFI premium. I was sceptical before, but it’s clear that whathifi’s review and a few others reviews were right about the great sound quality! They fit me perfectly. I can jump up and down, run around, do handstands etc... they won’t budge. No Bluetooth drop out at all. Haven’t experienced any issues at all.

I read a lot of the reviews saying they drop in and out all the time and are unstable where there is a lot of Bluetooth and Wifi activity. Would say that I have not had a problem with this and I commute to London everyday on the train and have not experienced any major drop outs or interference. I think these are awesome headphones and the sound is also very good compared to what i am used to. I was using a pair of Bose QC25's and although the noise cancelling is not quite as good. Its still pretty good and you get added noise isolation from the in the ear fit. For my 50 mins train journey, these are perfect and I charge them at work or at home once or twice a week. Not sure about the plane as they only last 3 hours but for my daily commute awesome and no interference problems. They do drop out occasionally for less than a second but that does not bother me and there is some delay between the headphone sound and speaking on some Netflix/Skygo programmes but it seems to catch itself up after a while. Overall awesome headphones

Thoroughly articulate, engaging sound with total composure...and that's after only a half an hour of listening. NC effectiveness varies depending on the types of ambient noise in my opinion but I used them yesterday on a flight and the difference was significant. Ability get 1:15 playtime from a 15 min charge removes a lot of the problems associated with perceived battery life limitations. Negatives: At least with my ears, they really need to be jammed in and getting a tip with a good seal took time but essential to unlock the potential of these. My right ear connection is sometimes a bit iffy as per the What Hi-Fi review so Sony fix this please because it seems to affect all units. No volume controls on the earphones unlike the Samsung's and no way of knowing how much charge the case has or even when it is finished charging.

These look REALLY great and I have the wired version. In fact you can see reviews all over the place ( you tube . amazon ) for Sony noise cancellation and they say that it is at least as good as Bose if not better. And the sound is normally better ( Bose against other competitors normally scores higher on noise cancelling and has good sound if not great).Sony is really taking the battle to Bose and these will be great as they are a first offering buds with great sound and true noise cancelling ( note if you are new to noise cancelling it works best with momentous sound like plane train or bus drowns--it will not kill 100% someone shouting near you.).These are 10% lower price 1 month before release so whats not to like.

I got a pair of these free with a Sony phone and I've been very pleased with them. The battery life could be longer, but I generally get 1 1/2-2 hours out of them which I think is acceptable, and pop them in the case and they're charge again in an hour, ideal for a commute. The sound quality is excellent, the noise cancelling works well on a train etc.The only downsides are occasional dropping out of sound from the right earpiece, normally when the phone is in a back pocket on the left side of the body and it would be nice if the battery was a bit longer lasting, but I'm not willing to pay the extra for the newer version with extra battery life.

Brilliant! Was unsure about buying given reviews but I'm really happy with them. Sony has updated software for headphones so that has maybe ironed out some issues people have had. Noise cancelling is better than expected and few issues with connection. However I connect using nfc on case before removing headphones as you need to make sure left and right earphone are connected to each other. I run with them as well and they stay snuggly in ears with no concerns about them falling out. They rarely lose connection. Adaptative sound control and access to Google Assistant are great additions in last software update!

These earphones produce a surprisingly transparent and spatial soundstage with a clear detailed midrange and realistic bass levels. They do a good job isolating you from the outside world for in-ear phones. I have experienced little or no drop out during everyday listening as described by other reviewers. I did have early pairing and play problems but that was more to do with the Bluetooth connectivity of the iBasso DX200 I was using and not the phones. Early days maybe but I am pleased with this ‘Open Box’ purchase. Excellent value from Amazon.

Fantastic for having no wires or a neck band. Sound cancelling is good but not best in class. Amazing to have some level of noise cancelling in such a small product.I'm told there is some sound leak by my colleagues so can't enjoy my music at the level I'd like while in office.Sound quality is infinitely better than Apples airpods as is the fit. On par with Bose QC30s but not it's sound cancelling.I'm looking forward to gen 2 model in a few months which promise more bass.

1.2.2019

For music they are excellent. If you are having connectivity issues, download the Sony headphones app and turn on connection priority mode. They have been marvellous for music, the sound quality is outstanding. The battery life is disspointing but with the noise cancelling you would expect it. The noise cancelling does the job not as good as it is on the Sony headphones. I would recommend these for music because their is a slight delay with videos.

14.1.2019

These really do sound great but the noise cancellation is little more than a gimmick as it cancels very little,I get just over 2 hours battery life out of them with it off.The complaints about the right channel are real although being almost totally deaf in my right ear it doesnt affect me too much.I dont regret purchasing them although there is room for improvement

10.6.2018

Sound quality is very good. As other people have mentioned, the right ear bud can have connection issues but I find this mainly occurs when first using and thereafter is fine. Best to follow instructions carefully on using to make sure right bud pairs when used out of the charging case.

24.12.2019

They're an awesome set of headphones...but the battery life is a massive disappointment. I adore Sony products and was superbly impressed with the noise-cancelling power of these little fellas...but three hours or so just isn't long enough for batteries to be cutting out.
