I picked this up to go with the A77 I bought recently, whilst I'm not a huge grip fan (I use them but not all the time) it is useful to have for extended shooting periods and to help for portrait shots. I find a grip more comfortable esp if you are using a flash as well as heavier lenses, the extra size ensures you get a strong hold of the camera and it won't be unbalanced.Do note that the grip fits both the A77 AND the A77 mk II bodiesAfter using the grip for a while my summary of the good and bad points about it.Good stuff:+ Quality is good, the grip is mostly plastic (the plate where the screw thread sits is metal though) dense plastics feel strong and the rubber grip area matches the camera texture perfectly. Some might prefer mostly mag alloy build though+ Weather resistant, on the battery cover door there is a rubber pad which seals when closed to stop water/dirt getting in, switches and dials like the A77 body are dust and moisture resistant. I noted a rubber seal on the bottom of the battery stem, this should stop water getting into the camera body battery compartment.+ Lots of on grip controls, AEL, AF/MF button, exp compensation (all these are a given on grips) but the Fn and magnify button give are welcomed extra so you basically get almost the same level of control as you do on the body.+ The slider tray accepts 2 batteries so you can effectively double your shooting capacityNot so great:- It is costly..being honest. I've used many grips from other makers, this isn't by any means the highest price I've seen on a grip, but it's not cheap- I would prefer a non stem design. The battery is replicated on the grip and slots into the body with contact points. This is fine but if you take the grip off it's a pain to find somewhere to carry it as the stem is sticking out. A design without this (ie contact slots on the body and grip, like the film Dyanx 7) would make it a lot easier to store and carry off the cameraThe dials and buttons feel good, dials having the same rubber finish as the body does. Buttons have the same tactile feel as the body controls. You also have 2 slots on top and botton of the grip so you can if you wish attach a hand strap (or use the neck strap on one of them)It is worth looking around at alternatives if you can't stomach the asking price, there are a few third party makers out there, the Meike grip though lacks the joystick control (which is a downer) some do have this, so look around if you want a more cost effective solution. On the positive side Sony do go that extra mile with controls, the grip has far more buttons and controls than the usual Canikon offerings for their equivalent bodies, it does mean you have most of the controls you need to change settings in camera with moving having to dive into the body controls. It's also good news that the A77 mk II shares the same grip, this makes it a much more attactive purchase. If you intend to later on pick up the newer body then you can share the grip between bodies. It's hugely annoying when makers keep changing grip designs so well done to Sony for sticking to the same one.In closing a very nice grip, it's a tad pricey but it is very well made.

If you have the A77 am sure this is like it was for me on your wish/shopping list?First impressions on opening the box is it has a nice weighty feel, and seems a well made product (and so it should for price ha-ha!) This unlike other grips I have used in the past doesn't require you to remove your battery door on your camera it simply stays open and fits into a slot when you attach the grip!Inserting the 2 batteries is straight forward and they fit into place with a reassuring click on the slide out tray! The colour match is spot on and it screws firmly on to the body (it does have a tripod mount on the bottom of the unit!)On first power up you will notice you now have 2 battery life meters on whichever of the screens you are using, which saves the worry of battery life when out shooting as you know you have one full battery in reserve? For portrait shots this is superb and saves the awkward holding position you usually end up into to get your shots level? The buttons on the grip performs just like the camera ones do though the replicated controls are not in exactly the same positions so you need to get used to the layout (see my uploaded pictures)There are no reall downsides so far for me personally except maybe the cost? The added weight possibly may be an issue for some? It certainly isn't a vast weight although something maybe to consider as well as the extra size to ensure it will fit in your bag etc?For me with say my 70-300G lens it helps balance the weight out so is not an issue really, and even with say a macro lens attached it still feels fine and more solid somehow?I really recommend this for the battery life, and added portrait functionality alone, as well as the now more overal pro feel of the body you also get? if you are thinking about getting it I don't think you will be disappointed in the build quality or use of the grip 5*****

With the cost of this item now some £70 less than RRP it was time to take the plunge! Glad I did! Although this does add some weight to the camera it does so in a positive way. The whole until seems better balanced, the handling is more positive and taking portraits far more controlled. This genuine Sony item has all the controls you need unlike some third party grips. It's extremely well made as you would expect and with materials that match the camera. I'm using mine with one genuine Sony battery and one Hahnel HL-XM500 third party battery which works exactly as the Sony despite other reviews. I tried the grip with just the Hahnel battery and everything still functions as expected. For those in the UK the Hahnel battery can be purchased for around £30 from Premier Ink, it has a slightly lower capacity but nevertheless a good saving over a genuine Sony battery. Get a grip! You won't be disappointed!

This is a beautiful piece of high-end consumer product design that actually makes similar products from Canon and Nikon look crude by comparison.Aside from replicating all of the camera controls including both control wheels and joystick and even the exposure comp button it facilitates portrait shooting with a finesse that is hard to imagine until you actually try it out. Again the experience is superior to Canon and Nikon, where the vertical shutter release is at the end of the unit, rather than three quarters of the way along, as it is here.Is it worth a fifth of the price of the camera? Possibly not, and it certainly makes the whole ensemble difficult to fit into a camera bag,but nevertheless it much more than the vanity product that most ad-on grips are and genuinely improves on the handling of an already tactically great camera.

I'd tried a friend's cheaper "look-alike" grip from one of the third party manufacturers before deciding to buy the real thing for my 77 Mk2 and I'm glad I did. The build-quality and feel when you are holding the Sony original is in a different league. It also allows the grip to be fitted to your camera without having to remove the battery compartment cap on the camera - something which I was very reluctant to have to do and which, as far as I can tell, you must do with all of the third-party units. Well worth the extra few £££s.

I bought this primarily to double the battery capacity of my Sony a77ii. Factoring in the cost of purchasing an additional Sony battery, this is quite an expensive accessory. Thinking back, I probably could have just bought a ton of Sony batteries instead and for me, this was an impulse purchase, so I would recommend you to really ask yourself if you actually need this. This would probably make sense if you plan on taking a lot of portraits, if not, may be cheaper to save money and buy some extra Sony batteries instead.

What a great add-on for the sony a77, has everything you need- very good feel on the grip, extra slot for additional battery and generally makes the camera look more professional with an ease of making portraits without having to hold your camera in an awkward position. Another thing i have to mention is the fact that you can still mount it to your tripod, no problem - very usefull. No cons for me so far :)

Very nice accessory. I'm using it with the MkII, and it's served me blissfully. I have little need to ever take it off, storing the extra batteries, and adding weight to the camera are brilliant features of the grip. It has all the control buttons from the camera itself, including both control wheels, thumbstick and ISO controls, must have for people taking portrait shots

Great addition to the A77, giving a vertical grip and all the functions at your fingertips virtually identical to the horizontal. At £200 this is not cheap, but the unit has the same build and dust proofing etc. as the A77. There are many cheap replicas sold on Amazon and other sites, but if you've shelled out for the A77, spend a little more and get the original grip

I wiil give this 5 stars but only desrves 4.5 for one reason and it's just me being picky, tightening can be fiddly.A very good well designed VC grip for the A77mk2, button placement is spot on for my hands, the grip is very comfortable in the hand and finger reach is again spot on.

15.12.2012

i like it, adds abit more feel to your camera and all the buttons in pretty much the same posistion as on the camera, my only down side is that the grip isnt as deep as on the body, its only slight but you do notice it. other than that, great product (and cheaper here than from sony)

Having purchased the Sony a77 which is a fantastic camera. I ordered the grip which adds extra battery and functions. Taking portraits are really easy with the grip attached. Having extra battery life is great too. Build quality is solid and weather sealed. A must have accessory.

18.6.2013

Very well thought out design and very good quality. Despite the extra weight, it make the camera better balanced especialy with longer lenses. Havimg two batteries in the grip is a bonus as the battery life in normal use is not brilliant on the A77.

27.3.2013

Yup - it adds a bit of weight to the camera which is already a solid bit of kit (Sony A77) but it sure steadies the shot something brilliant. It's a great bit of kit. Don't be tempted by the cheapo versions on E Bay - this one is the real McCoy.

23.8.2014

This is a great piece of kit, the only reason for 4 stars is it came a day late after I'd paid for next day delivery. A little expensive but if you like original manufacturer accessories for your camera this is the way to go.
