Let me start out by saying I feel it should be mandatory to buy this add-on if you have a 550D/T2i Canon camera, if you have big hands or long fingers!Being quite large I have reletively big hands and I found that most DSLRs body's are just a little too small for my hands. I can grip with 2 or 3 fingers but the last few pinkies wrap under the camera and after a few hours of shooting, especially in cold weather, my hand really starts to cramp up. I bought this grip with the intention of hoping to relieve the cramps and enjoy shooting more, it has done just that and more.Out of the box you get the grip itself and two battery trays. One tray supports two 550D type LP-E8 batteries and the other will take 6 standard AA sized batteries for emergencies.Best thing is buy a pack of AA rechargeables or just some bog standard Duracells/EveryReadys and leave them in your bag. I love going out early but it's often very cold and the cold kills battery life, lost count of the number of times I have been caught short, fighting for just one more shot while the red battery warning is flashing away! The grip feels very solid indeed, not only gives the camera some much needed bulk but those of us with huge paws and fat chipolata pinkies will really appreciate the extra purchase you get while holding the camera. The grip is is roughly the size of say four LP-E8 batteries, two high, set end-to-end, that gives you some rough idea how fat the grip will be in your hand. The unit really comes into its own when in portrait mode. Your hand is in exactly the same position as it is when in landscape, far more natural than trying to hold the weight of the enture fully loaded camera "hanging" down from your hand held horizontally. If you have smaller hands or very short fingers you may find the grip will hurt more to hold, as the base is very wide indeed, so ensure you are buying the grip for the right reasons. You have to be careful when you attach the unit. The existing battery cover is gently "snapped" out of place and there is a little "cubby" on the grip's upright part to store the camera's battery cover ( so idiots like me don't chuck it into the kit bag and lose it, nice touch Canon! ), the entire stem is then pushed up into the camera and you tighten the thumb-wheel into the tripod thread under the body. The other wonderful thing is having the extra controls on the grip. You get duplicates on the grip of shutter button, +/- zoom buttons, AV button and the saw-toothed wheel that sits behind the shutter button. So when shooting in portrait you have access to adjust the aperature, shutter speed, auto-focus points, etc., without having turn the camera back to landscape to adjust first, very useful. The only problem I have found is when you have a long telezoon lens fitted, you use a lens collar and try to get the entire lot onto a tripod head. The grip protrudes forward under the camera and there may not be enough room for the lens collar to sit on the tripod head. I use the Canon 70-200mm f4 L and Manfrotto 804RC2 head, I cannot mount this combo ( when the battery grip is fitted ) to the tripod as there is not enough clearance to use the lens collar, the battery grip gets in the way. So I simply have to take a chance and mount the grip to the tripod head, it feels solid enough but the weight of the lens pulling down against the tripod head mount bracket bothers me a little. Not a big problem for most light telezooms, but if you have something big like a 400mm plus, just be aware if you use the lens collar to support the combo all the time. Finally I have to say the one last thing which was good, was the huge boost to the ego you get from turning your bog-standard little 550D DSLR into something that looks very professional, this means of course you will attract even more attention while out shooting! So if like me you are an amateur snapper, prepare for more security guards to start bothering you for looking like a pro and asking you to stop shooting in public places! LOL!Possibly the the best add-on I have ever bought for my kit, it not only looks good ( nice bonus, LOL! ) it's a lot more functional, having all key controls duplicated, than I had first suspected. It's extremely comfortable to use and if you have spent money on a good body some good glass, this should be the next purchase. Worth every penny!

Attached it to my 550D and it's never off unless to recharge the batteries. It fits simply into the camera - ensure you read how to remove the existing cover pre-installed on your camera first (gently, gently does it) and store in the battery grip otherwise you can lose it if you want to place it back later when you're not using the grip. I put two batteries in (you can use only one if you want) and forget it as the power seems to last forever - though I don't shoot video. For me the real bonus is when you hold the camera in portrait mode and use the battery grip controls to operate auto focus or other adjustments without having to turn the camera horizontally and stretch to reach. For me the heavier weight works but is might be problem for those who prefer a lighter feel to their Canon. Delivery was on time and packaging showed genuine Canon. Very pleased with the purchase.

Bought this as an add on to an earlier present (Canon 550D) for my wife who never takes one picture when a thousand will do so needs endurance from her battery pack. Saw some other models which struck me as a little cheap and flimsy looking (although have only viewed these online) decided to go for the purpose built model as this is what I got her to go with her 400D. This one looks the business, robust and ergonomic with the same features beloved of the model for the 400D mentioned earlier. Have yet to try this out 'in the field' but if it lives up to the same stamina as that earlier model this Battery Grip will prove to be a lifetime companion to my wife's cherished Canon EOS 550D.

nice construction, love the camera cover holder, the extra battery is essential.it's a solid build and does add considerable weight to the already lite 550D.still brings it under the standard 7D weight.still getting used to holding the camera in portrait using the button and grip.love the AA battery backup tray. you never know when you need it.it does make the 550D look like an EOS1.Shame it has a separate power switch. i was hoping to bypass and leave the dial power switch on, and use the power grip power switch as the primary switch. but it doesn't work like that. shame. Now I'm juggling if i like the more solid look and feel or the portability of the standard body.

A bit pricey, but you're paying for the usual Canon quality. Do note that there doesn't seem to be a lot of metal in the chassis, but then it's for a small and light camera. The buttons feel good and make shooting portrait a lot easier. Feels like a true extension of the 760d which I have it on. I can't say how this compares to third party grips or how it works with non-Canon batteries, but as I bought this for longer video shooting time without the need to remove the camera off a tripod and for better handling with big lenses like 70-200s, works a treat.

I recently bought this grip for my Canon 550d camera and immediately placed it on the camera to try it. First impression was WOW as the ballence was perfect. This does add weight to the camera but the sturdy feel, grip and looks are just great. I love this piece of kit and would say that this is one piece of kit your Canon really does want. WELL worth the price. The idea of the AA battery tray as an emergency is a great idea especially when on holiday and you are on a trip.Very impressed by the Canon feel and build of this added extra and the camera.

Fantastic piece of kit. Gives added weight to camera and feels more comfortable to grip, particularly if you have large hands or long fingers. Great for taking portrait shots as shutter release and other controls are duplicated on grip and don't require manual dexterity to take shots. Spare backup AA battery magazine also a bonus although with 2 Canon batteries fitted I wouldn't expect to be needing a backup. Looked at much cheaper alternatives but opted for Canon due to quality and some poor reviews of other products.

Bought this for my Canon EOS 700D,and it fits perfectly.Takes two rechargable batterys or 6 AA type.I find that it balances the weight of larger lens and helps to handle the feel of the camera better. It also adds to the weight of the camera so a good strap is required. There are cheaper models of this item out there and they may be brilliant, but I decided to keep everything origional except for the batteries. (Bought Hahnel...HL-E8 1120mA 7.2V Li-ion Batterys, they are excellent and a lot cheaper)

The BG-E8 is a fantastic addition to the 550D. I have particularly large hands and so the 550D on its own (with its relatively small body) would become painful to hold after a few hours. With the battery grip it is so much easier to handle, both in terms of prolonged use and keeping the camera steady while hand holding at slow shutter speeds.Build quality is excellent (identical to the 550D) and the ability to swap in 6 AA batteries if necessary can be a lifesaver.

I bought this to be able to shoot more comfortably in portrait format. For handheld shooting this work very well. However there is no tripod socket to be able to mount the camera and shoot in portrait format on a tripod. From my point of view, this is a major drawback. Otherwise, the grip is comfortable to hold and the shutter release is easily accessible. I also like the ability to use Li or AA batteries thanks to the clever interchangeable battery holders.

This it is definately worth the moneyPro's -It makes the camera well balanced and solidEasier to take portrate shots as all the controls are on the gripCamera is easier to hold and feels better in the handsEasy to assembleWell builtMakes the 550d look really goodConsMakes the camera heavier but it's a small trade off against all the pro'sBuy one now, don't dither like I did, it's the best thing you'll buy for your 550d

9.4.2013

This does add a little weight to the 550D, but the weight is worth it. Once I got used to switching my hand to the portrait grip it's so much more comfortable to shoot for longer periods. It also helps the camera sit flat against my chest with the EF-S 17-55mm F2.8 or EF 100mm L IS USM attached.Awesome product, not cheap, but worth the pennies if you're shooting for a while, and well worth it if you shoot in portrait.

31.5.2014

It may be a bit costly compared to third party battery grips, but it fits and looks like your canon camera (third party grips may vary in materials used and fitting onto your camera), other than that everything works flawlessly, buttons are responsive, wheel works perfectly i would recommend this to anyone who needs more battery space, easier portrait shooting and adding weight to your camera for easier stability.

I am an amateur portrait photographer and I have been tempted by this for a number of years.I finally decided to purchase and I am delighted with it. It adds very useful additional size to my Canin EOS 650D while making portrait photography much more comfortable. The additional power from a second battery is great too.If you are thinking of getting this then do it, I don't think you will regret it at all.

8.1.2013

I have needed one of these for some time as my 600D is just a little too small for my large hands. It transforms the urgonomics of the camera and makes it far more comfortable to use in both portrate and landscape shots, plus the added bonus of longer batter life.Kept with the Canon brand to ensure good build and compatibility and it does not disappoint, highly recommended via impeccable Amazon service 10/10
