The controller helps provide an amazingly immersive experience when using the Gear VR. It is designed ergonomically and fits in the hand comfortably. As it has been almost 6 months since the controller was released there are many more apps that use the controller. Pros and cons are below.PROS:IMMERSIVITY: In the game Ultrawings, which is a stripped back flight simulator, you take control of a variety of planes. You control them using the motion control like a joystick. This provides a super immersive experience that you would not get when using a standard Bluetooth controller. Other games like dead and buried use the control to aim a gun this also provides a very immersive experience. It is hard to describe how much of a difference it makes to be able to interact with things in game with your hands.ERGONOMICS + DESIGN: The controller's design is very well thought out and was comfortable throughout use. There is a circular touch at the top of controller. Just under the touch bad is a trigger button. Below that there is a return and a home button. The home button acts as a re-calibration button when long pressed. Finally there are a pair of buttons that control volume. The button layout is intuitive and (importantly) is easy to use when you can't actually see itCONS:BUILD QUALITY: I found that the trigger button on my controller felt a little loose and could be moved from side to side quite easily. When the trigger button is pulled, it makes a tacky, plastic sound. Admittedly you don't hear this during normal usage as you will have headphones on. It's just disappointing that it isn't as high quality as an Xbox or Playstation controller trigger (you are paying a similar price).BATTERIES: Personally I do not mind the fact that Oculus used triple A batteries instead of rechargeable ones as you get much longer battery life. To many people, however, this is close to a deal breaker. Triple A batteries aren't expensive but they are certainly more expensive than simply recharging the controller. Also it is very inconvenient to have to buy batteries just to keep the controller running.Bottom line:If you have the old headset, this is the best possible upgrade you can buy. It adds a new degree of immersion to many games and experiences. Even if games don't use the motion aspect of the controller you can still use the touchpad on the controller to control the games (much better place for it than up on the headset). Buying the 2nd generation Gear VR provides very little of an upgrade as most of the improvements are only design. So save your money and buy the controller. If you have any questions don't hesitate to comment below, I will try to answer them. If you are looking at this item, I'm assuming that like me you had a Samsung Gear vr without a controller and are using the touchpad and buttons on the side of the headset. This is ok and after a while, the positioning of the pad and buttons does become a bit more second nature. However, it still isn't as good as having one of these in your hands. The controller is powered by two AAA batteries which are provided with the controller and do seem to last quite a while. I've bought some from a local poundshop where you get about ten for £1 and even these last quite a while. To set up the controller, before placing your phone in the vr headset, you have to pair the controller to the phone via normal bluetooth procedures and the Oculus app.The app will then go through a two step calibration and the controller is then ready to be used.Once using the controller in VR, a 3d model of the controller shows on the screen and acts like a laser pointer on the screen. It makes controlling the vr so much easier and it will automatically switch off to preserve battery. One click will then wake it up immediately for further use. I would definitely recommend this controller. The only reason why I don't give it five stars is that it would be much better and more environmentally friendly if it contained an integrated rechargeable battery. If you found this review helpful, can you please help me by clicking on the helpful button. Thanks.

This controller is essential if you want to enjoy the Samsung Gear VR headset to it's full potential. It is very simple, responsive and easy to set up and use. I have a Gen 1 Gear VR headset (The white and black version) with a Samsung S7 Edge mobile attached. The controller has a trigger button at the top front and a touch sensitive, a clickable circular controller pad at the top, a Home and Back button under the touch pad and a volume +/- button at the bottom. The controller shows up as a virtual controller with a blue light pointer inside the Gear VR headset which is great for navigating menus with precise point and click motion. It's quite small and light which I find an advantage despite having big hands. It is a HUGE improvement on the touch pad controller on the side of the headset.Comes with a handy slim wristband to keep it in your possession if you let go of it.If you want more out of your Samsung VR headset this is a must have purchase. You wont be disappointed!

Top marks to the seller. It came new and unopened. As for the controller, I get a few drop-out issues on a Samsung S7, and I now just unpair the device and pair it again using the controllers software. Aside from that, in the VR apps it does work in (it does not work in every Samsung app) it is fantastic, doubling up as a gun in a shoot em up or a way to navigate landscapes in other VR experiences. All in all if you already have a modern Samsung phone, its a no brainer when it comes to buying the Gear headset and this controller. Cost me less than £53 quid for the controller and headset. (update, controller works better with less drop out issues. Battery life seems really good also. There are a few VR apps that do not offer support with the controller, but you can use the touchpad on the VR headset situated to the right.)

I got the Samsung headgear separately from my phone and with no control. I have used only the touch panel on the side of the headgear up till now. It's so much easier to direct yourself around in VR with the controller. It's comfortable to hold and easy to set up and use. The product comes with batteries so that you can start using it immediately after arrival. It was safely packaged and in a perfect condition. Why I don't give this product a full rating is because sometimes it felt very offset in VR and even if I used the home-button to recalibrate the position, it didn't always help. However, it's nothing I think was too disruptive for me and I value the accessibility the product has given mecompared to my earlier experience with the touch panel on the headgear.

Very cool item , have been using it about three months now, and it’s so much better with some using your finger on the side of the head set , Yeah only thing if I have anything about the item this negative, as sometimes when you take the headset off and then replace it on your head again the directional beam of the controller is pointing in the wrong direction, Which means re-loading up the headset again

14.3.2018

Very easy to use. Configures effortlessly over Bluetooth to your phone. Hints and tips built into Samsung Gear VR headset, hence you don't have to 'reconfigure' the controller again. For example, if the 'beam' isn't straight ahead then hold done the LH top button until it centres again. I could not get on with the 'side controls' on the Samsung VR headset, hence this is a good tool to use in your hand.

brilliant but for my S7, i HAD to uninstall and re-install oculus and everything related to it for the controller to work.updating oculus alone did not remedy the problem, save yourself the hassle and do a clean reinstall + follow instructions to add controller.the whole process shouldnt take more than 20mins but took me half a day of research and frustration to derive to the conclusion.enjoy !!

I was torn between purchasing this or a Bluetooth controller. In the end I went for this due to the price and was not disappointed. The controller works great for all vr experiences and I have not had any problems setting this up. Seems the most intuitive games are first person shooters.Battery life seems fine too. This really adds to your vr experience!

27.3.2019

Paid £12 for this. It really is a gamechanger.Makes interacting in VR so much more natural than having to look at things to select. If you do buy this, you need to try Racket Fury from the Oculus Store. Just amazingly realistic virtual ping pong!

Companion to the Gear VR headset. Would recommend using this if you don't like the built in buttons on headset, or if you wanna try the games that require a controller. Otherwise built in buttons do the job fine.

Really good makes gear vr so much better! Mine only really drifts if I put it down but just hold reset button 2seconds and its bang on! Really like this well worth the money

10.2.2018

Works perfectly. If at first your device doesn't find the controller, try uninstalling and installing back the Oculus app. It is a great improvement to the VR gear

Well worth adding this to all GearVR setups, as it makes the whole experience so much better.Works just as well on S7 / S7 Edge and older (White) GearVR models.

Works very well with the Samsung VR headset. Games work really with the product. Well worth the buy if you are wanting to play games with the VR headset.
