For a long time Salter has been a famous and well respected name in the manufacture of weighing scales. Although first established as a British company in 1760, they are now part of HoMedics Inc, an American corporation specializing in Home Medical apparatus of various kinds, including massagers, air cleaners, humidifiers, sound spars, blood pressure and fitness monitors etc. It is strange to think that good old Salter is now part of a bigger US conglomeration. The company is based at Tonbridge, Sussex. One would expect Salter to produce a set of scales which display a good degree of innovation, pleasantness of design, quality of manufacture, reliability, and reasonable price...in this case the design does meet most of those criteria. The only question is whether it is reliably accurate enough for purpose. The scales work entirely by mechanical action. There are no batteries involved, and unlike most modern digital scales, there is no requirement for any type of electrical power. There is a white horizontal rotating twin dial, with black calibrations in both metric (kg) and imperial (lbs) units, which moves in a circular motion as you place items of weight in the bowl, and you have to read the weight against the graduations marked on the scale. The circular shaped reading scale itself is located behind a clear plastic cover for protection. The smallest unit is 1 oz or 25 gms, which is quite small and it is impossible to feel you have weighed something to the accuracy of 1 ounce or 25 grams. The problems of optical parallax and the minuteness of the graduations on the dial, make it seem to be a rather hit-and-miss method of weighing accurately, especially at low weights. At larger weights it is perfectly OK.The scales weigh to a maximum of 4 kg, equal to 9 pounds, but you will never use most of the scale… what recipe requires 4 kg or 9 lbs of any one ingredient? Never. So you will only be using a quarter of the scale at most, and only one 20th of the scale most of the time. If you look carefully at your recipes you will find that very few ingredients weigh more than 1 ½ kg, equal to 3 lbs, with many ingredients of only 15-25 grams, equal to 1 oz. There is no way you can read 15 grams or 1 oz accurately by using this type of scales. It is too minute. These scales are claimed to be kitchen scales, but that is essentially a marketing ploy, since they cannot accurately weigh the majority of small ingredients in many recipes. These are really general purpose domestic scales, useful for weighing objects with considerably more weight. Salter should have designed these kitchen scales with a calibration that reads up to 2 kg or 4 lbs maximum, which would have made them more cook friendly.Mechanical scales need to be regularly calibrated, but unfortunately these Salter scales have no means of being re-calibrated. Salter state in the leaflet that the scales require no maintenance of any kind, but that assumes they will be accurate for life, which clearly any spring based mechanism cannot be, since springs get progressively weaker, slacker, losing their tension, with repeated use. Of course you would have to use these scales excessively to wear the spring mechanism out, so hopefully that will not be a problem. In the documentation there is no indication of the accuracy of the scales, which would normally be given to +/- a few percentage points. Testing them against a triple beam balance that I have, I found them to be accurate to within 1.0 %, which is quite good, but perhaps not precise enough for some modern cooks who require accuracy to a quarter of a gram. The best thing about these scales is the rather beautiful bowl which has an elegant curve and is made of a material which is dishwasher, microwave and freezer safe. It can be inverted over the scales for dust free storage. The scales have the usual zero facility which enables one to add multiple items in the same bowl, adding and weighing ingredients continuously, not separately. A very useful feature. These Salter kitchen scales are made in China, and hopefully made to Salter’s own specification. It is best to be aware that Chinese-made products have a very variable reputation, with some being extremely well made, but others do not have a very long life, before going terminally wrong. The scales come with a 15 year guarantee, which indicates that the manufacturer believes they will last much longer than 15 years. Indeed, this type of mechanical scale should last a lifetime. It will be interesting to see whether it does.

I have a compact version of these scales that I bought 15 years ago whilst I was at Uni. It still works a treat and really did live up to the 15 year guarantee thats still on the box!I decided to treat myself to these recently as the only downside with the compact model I have is that the 'add' bit of 'add and weigh' was always a bit redundant as you couldn't really fit more than one ingredient in the bowel it came with at a time. This model is even better than the compact one I have, a nice big bowel that doubles up as a mixing bowel and a easier to adjust scale for setting to zero. Don't mess about with electronic scales get a mechanical Salter scale they really are brilliant.

This is to replace an identical product purchased at least 15 years ago (probably 20!). Easy to use. Weights in ounces/lbs and gramms/kilograms. Very good bowl but can also be used without the bowl - for example zero the scale after placing a saucer on top and then add what you want to weigh. AND no batteries. Delighted to find this on sale at Amazon when going through all the other scales on offer and went for it straight away.

Am totally happy with the experience of shopping at Argos, Victoria. Nice staff, efficient service, only in the store for about 5 mins and best of all a good product. It also was the best value as I looked around first. The scales are easy to read, lovely to look at and I am very happy with my purchase. Made biscuits and a cake since purchasing and the weighing was dead on each time. A lovely little item for the kitchen.

I have tried digital scales and found them wanting mainly because I find them hard to read at times. But these scales are ideal and will last me many years. i can add ingredients to the bowl and need not make washing up by using other items to measure and contain items. I can read the dial without having to reset it for imperial or metric. They are easy to clean and sturdy. I really prefer them.

These scales are well designed and are a pleasure to use. The bowl seems quite robust and the dial with the measurements on it is nice and clear. The adjustment (back to zero) for weighing additional things isn't as easy as I expected, but it may be that I'm not used to it yet. I wouldn't change them for any other set I've seen and they're certainly better than my old ones.

Bought as a Christmas present for an old lady (89) who had just broken her very old salter scales (they don't bounce) and needed something easy to use without complicated frills. These scales seemed to be just the ticket and at a sensible price. I'm sure she will be pleased with them - once she has got over the shock of them being not exactly the same as her old ones.

I wanted a mechanical scale to replace my old one which I managed to drop and break, the salter aquaweigh is brilliant, it has a good sized bowl which I can add to, and even mix in, with a pouring lip which makes life really easy with a sloppy mixture. its really easy to adjust when adding ingredients and has a liquid measure too, its perfect for my needs.

This is the second same scale I have had, I ordered the same one again as I am very happy with its overall performance, I dropped the last one I had had for a lot of years, so having had it for the years , I knew it was a great one to use, and you can store it away in the cupboard without it taking up to much room, so I am very happy to get a replacement.

This is a fairly basic set of scales that you can add ingredients to zero and add more to as you go.They are perhaps a little old fashioned compared with the latest digital ones but they do the job pretty well. The bowl itself if safe in the microwave and dishwasher which is handy. They come with a 15 year guarantee. So far so good!...

After the readouts on my digital scales became unreadable, I have gone back to non digital scales.Very happy with Salter scales.1) The bowl is big enough, and can live in a cupboard when not required2)Easy to set, numbers big enough to read relatively easily3)Easy to add several components to the bowl and re-zero.Would recommend

I took a set of Salter Digital Kitchen Scales back to Argos, which I found hard to read and I was please that you could still get the old manual style scales, and what a great set of scales they are they are easy to read, and they also show to sets of scales one for lbs/kg and the other side ozs/grams, so they are very useful.

Great kitchen scales - we had an afternoon of baking yesterday and these scales accurately measured the ingredients.Particularly handy - as you can add all the ingredients in to the bowl as you go - or if baking with large quantities these would work as regular scales. The bowl fits over the scales for compact storage.

Bought as a gift to my mum, as her Scales had broke. She said that the scales were better than her old scales which was also Salter Kitchen scales, so have obsiouvly improved as her old scales were very similar to these as she does not have much storage to store them and these are easier to store.

A well priced product that was easy to use straight out of the box. I was useful to have both liquid measurements and solid material measurements as well. Quite accurate when compared with known weights. We have only had it for a few days, but it still does the job and no signs of any issues.
