When an old digital set started showing ‘LO’, in terms of battery rather than weight (!), and could never really be relied upon (as the weight reading could vary depending on whether on carpet or lino) it was time for a change.? HoMedics Group Ltd? SALTER®? MODEL : 433 SVDR/2616? 2015? MECHANICAL PERSONAL SCALES? KILO/STONE (Max 120 kg x 1 kg/19 st x 2 lb)~ 15 YEAR GUARANTEECOLOUR : SILVER GREY/GREY/SIVER‘Made in China’This is a neat, well-made, mechanical set that comes in a box measuring around 25.5 cm x 25.75 cm x 5 cm, protected by a strong outer carton for safe transit. Inside the scales are wrapped in a cellophane-type material.Relatively neutral in colour, the PVC-type textured front is SILVER GREY,with a slightly lighter shade of GREY surround.Out of the box, they are an ideal fit for a gap in my bathroom, measuring roughly 24.5 cm wide (maximum) with the top slightly larger than the metal-type base that is around 22.5 cm square. The plastic-type viewing window measures around 6 cm x 4 cm, with the weight indicator in RED.The rotating dial has STONES in BLACK at the top; KG in RED underneath & ‘SALTER’ in BLACK, so there is no doubting where your smart scales have come from!Arguably, the numbers are on the small side, which might not suit all, but I know the number/increment I am expecting on each weekly weigh-in, so this doesn’t present a problem to me.The scale stands on four little BLACK-coloured plastic-type feet that pull out but don’t seem to act as ‘spacers’ for an uneven floor, as far as I can see.Simply peel off the cellophane, recalibrate (if required) with the serrated wheel situated at the opposite end to the dial and it is ready to stand on, keeping feet central to avoid tipping. The set comes complete with a multi-lingual use & care leaflet, which doubles up as the guarantee (domestic use only). The scales just need a wipe with a damp cloth.‘For maximum durability, keep scale dry and avoid direct heat or sunlight.’[9 images attached]

Salter is an extremely trusted brand name in scales and weighing, and even though this is one of their budget, bottom-of-the-range products, it’s still got a very decent build quality and should have a very long lifespan. As far as I can tell comparing to our previous bathroom scales, it seems to be very accurate, I’d certainly trust it. Other reviewers have said theirs didn’t give consistent readouts; again, that honestly wasn’t my experience. Many other reviewers have criticised the dial as being hard to read. Perhaps they’re reviewing old editions of the product, but honestly it’s not that bad. Anyone with reasonable eyesight will be able to read it. If your eyesight is a bit less than twenty-twenty then yes,you should definitely look at a more expensive digital scale with a very large LCD display, but for everyday use I’d say this is fine. It’s worth noting the ‘compact’ in the description. My problem wasn’t with reading the display, it was with comfortably getting both of my (size 11, not stupidly large) feet onto the panel! It’s a bonus for people with smaller bathrooms who don’t want to waste space on a large set of scales though, so pros and cons on that one.If any of the above sounds like it might be an issue for you, then for a bit less than twice the price (at current time of asking) you can get a full-sized Salter digital scale with large LCD readout, and unless money or bathroom space is tight, then I’d probably recommend that one instead. If however you’re wishing your waist was as tight as your budget, this is a very viable cheap option.

Despite a minor/major letdown I actually like these scales. I have had a few of late and whilst I really like the Salter smart scales you really can't beat a set of mechanical scales of old.Slim and reasonably light weight the scales feel well made and are backed up by a solid warranty. The face has a non-slip grey material whilst the rear features a dial for calibration if needed. There are some little feet and these pull out for use on carpets. Inside the box is a little care leaflet and details of your warranty and it amazes me these can be made, transported, stocked and sold for under a tenner. So, why do I think they have a minor/major flaw? As others have mentioned the display and in particular the numbers are small and hard to see.If you have sight issues you may struggle. I remember scales when I grew up had a magnified window and these could use larger numbers and maybe a more magnified window. Not a problem for me but I see why it could potentially be a really big problem. They seem generally accurate though giving a consistent reading yet these wouldn't be great if you a looking for precise measurements chasing any weight loss at all.Overall though a solid budget scales.

The scales arrived promptly and well packaged. These are a traditional style of scales with a fairly small foot print, so they don't take up too much space in the bathroom etc. They are very easy to use - zero them, step on and read the weight. I have compared them with some other scales and the weight were very similar - so no obvious problems with accuracy on these mechanical scales. The display is on the smallish size - but personally I had no problem with it. The maximum weight is 19 stone (around 120 kg). The Salter brand is well known and there is nothing to suggest that even with the current price tag of less than £ 10 that these wont last a fair amount of time. Certainly worth considering....A good compact scale at a good price....

The Salter 433 SVDR Compact silver mechanical bathroom scale has a simple analogue display and a mechanism that needs no batteries. This is an inexpensive, no-frills plastic model that is ideal for the day-to-day monitoring of your weight – an uncarpeted floor is the best surface for consistent readings. The display is reasonable enough – but if you have poor eyesight then a model with a digital illuminated readout might be a better option for you. Salter is a long-established brand and this basic model from the company seems accurate enough and represents pretty good value at around a tenner currently from Amazon.Certainly not my first choice in a bathroom scale but for value and build quality at the current price it deserves four stars.

This is a old-fashioned scale in that its not digital and you can't programme it or anything. Personally, I'm really pleased that this is one of the simple scales. There's nothing to set up. I literally just took it out of the box , turned the wheel to set the dial to 0 and stood on it. Refreshing simplicity. There are instructions for use but its basically put the scale on a flat surface, set to zero and weight yourself without shoes etc at the sametime each day.One drawback is that the max weight of this scale is 19 stone which i think is low given that alot of people who buy scales are struggling with their weight (myself included!). The plus though, is the product has a 15 year guarantee!Overall though,I'm really happy with this.

After struggling with digital scales which are temperamental on my carpet, it's a huge relief to get back to a mechanical set of bathroom scales. This is basic but perfect for my needs - just to jump on and off a couple of times a week. It doesn't do anything flashy but it gives a reliable reading in either stones/pounds or kilos.I didn't notice the numbers being particularly small as noted by other reviewers - something to bear in mind, though, if you have any eye-sight issues. If you just want to be able to keep an eye on your weight with no fuss, then this is ideal.

No batteries! After having bathroom scales almost constantly out of action because of needing a new battery I was glad to get something mechanical. They are a bit thicker and honestly uglier than my previous scales, but really they still slot in the nook I had for them so I don't mind the looks at all.Personally I could easy enough read the scales, I am tall but also young with good eyesight I guess. I can see how it could be a problem.Accuracy wise they give the same reading as the previous scales I used, so happy with that.

Salter is a brand name you can trust. This set of bathroom scales is reliable and accurate, as you would expect. These compactvscales are simple, no nonsense, and easy to use. Old school.Simply step on, for an accurate, instant read.I love the sleek silver finish, and the easy to read display. I also love the fact that no battery is needed. The top weight us 400lb or 28.5 stone. It's an incredible set is scales (great for checking luggage weights too!).With a 15 year guarantee, you can't go wrong.

We've been spoilt by digital scales, with their large clear readouts and memory functions, so it's a retrosurprise to see an old, small, analog display, one that resets itself when you step off, again. If you want hi-tech flashypants, this is not for you.If you want a sturdy, good looking classic piece, this is great. It's every bit as accurate as modern scales, although the dial will need resetting now and again, and much more handsome

There is quite a lot to like about these scales but they've lost one star for me because I can't see the weight reading. Now, me needing specs is one reason for that but the window the result comes up in and the markings to indicate the weight are quite small. They're comfortable to stand on and gives the same reading on carpet and hard floor. I'd recommend them but only if you've got excellent vision.

This is a traditional weighing machine without any need for batteries or charging. It is neatly and efficiently constructed, except for one aspect - it is not all that easy to read from a standing position, as the dial is rather small. This seems to me to be a significant flaw. Having said that, it weighs more accurately than the scales it is replacing in my bathroom.

13.2.2017

Great, functional, accurate and incredible value scales. They are non slip and bottom also grips well to hard floors without moving.Clear dial and easy to read in Kilos or Stones. Not too heavy and really all you could need in scales. Easier to read in my opinion than electronic scales. Recommended and for £10 you really can't go wrong.

6.4.2009

I am happy with this product and, although it didn't come with any tarty extras - has been a successful addition to the bathroom experience. Not essential perhaps, but an improvement at least. They actually just do the job they're for, nothing more and nothing less.

23.2.2017

These are useful , traditional, mechanical Scales from Salter in an attractive silver colour. It's nice to be able to just see your weight instead of having to get your phone out to calculate what that is in stones and pounds...happy weighing :).
