I've long been a fan of the Resident Evil series of games. I had the first one and the second one on the PS1 and loved both - despite their flaws. Resident Evil 2 and 3 Remake were two of my favourite games I played during 2020. I 100%'d both of them in achievements - which is something I don't normally do. When I first played this game, I'd bought it for PS2, I finished it then and played the mercenaries mini-game to death. I bought it again for the Xbox 360 and began a playthrough, but drifted away from it - perhaps when something new came out? I never picked it up again. Fast forward to the NOW and I downloaded the Xbox One HD version of this game. Was it any good?Well, yes and no.I have such fond memories of this game, I really think I was seeing it through rose-tinted glasses. I'd heard Capcom are working on a Resident Evil 4 Remake. My first reaction to this was: 'Whatever for? That was brilliant!' I could understand the decision to remake 1,2 and 3. They were great stories but games which were flawed because of the limitations of technology and the fact that many gameplay mechanics hadn't really been fine-tuned as they have now. Of course they didn't need to be! They were made a long time ago.Starting to play this in HD again, I quickly realised: This IS due a remake. The story is fascinating, the setting creepy. I particularly like the opening when Leon finds his way to the village for the first time. You could really picture it being the opening to some 'Hills Have Eyes' style horror movie. That side of the magic is still there. The setting, characters and even the voice acting are good. The voices maybe aren't on a par with the remakes, but I'd say they were closer to the remakes than the clunky dialogue in the early games. It also has atmospheric music and some nice set-pieces, such as when the villagers roll a giant rock on to you and the bit where you and Luis have to use the axe maniac to cut your ropes.Okay, so that's sounding positive. What's wrong with it?Sadly, it's just limited by the factor of the time it was made. Even in HD you can see the age of the 3D modelling and the texture art. It runs very well. I suspect the Xbox One is so over-spec for the game that it runs almost too well. The smoothness at times did actually make me feel a bit nauseous. That could be down to my rubbish eyes which have nearly packed up after 40 years of hardcore gaming, but there you have it. The real detractor from your fun though is the control system. In my addled brain when I played Remake 2 and 3 I thought the control system and camera angle reminded me of Resi 4. Superficially they are sort of similar in concept, but in terms of actual gameplay 4 is nowhere near as fluid or satisfying to play as the remakes. Turning, dodging, aiming. All of these elements seem like a chore and you're often left feeling like it was the limitations of the controls rather than a flaw in your strategy that got you killed. Would I recommend this? Well, if someone has played it before on an older system and they're looking for a good dose of nostalgia and re-visiting their youth - sure, go ahead and buy it. However, if you're new to Resi Evil, and you played the Remakes, and are thinking of picking this up to continue the story - I'd say leave it. Wait for the remake. This WAS arguably one of the best Resi games, but it can't compete with the remakes. The remake of this will be absolutely amazing if Capcom get it right and I think that will definitely a game worth waiting for.*Update after playing through 15 hours of the main campaign, getting to within spitting distance of the end.Okay, I'm on chapter 5 now. Yes the controls are a bit clunky compared to the remakes. The graphics aren't what you'd expect from a modern game and some of the level layouts and puzzles are a bit nonsensical. HOWEVER, and this is a BIG however... I'm finding it really addictive! I'm really enjoying playing through this now, irrespective of its flaws. I'm even looking forward to taking on 'Assignment Ada', 'Separate Ways' and 'Mercenaries'. So, as of 2nd November 2020 I'm upgrading this from 3 to 4 stars. It takes a bit of getting into, but once you're into it this is still a really fun game to play. I still stand by what I originally said - the remake is worth doing, but I think the remake will be a game of the year contender when they bring it out if they get it right. Even without a remake, Resi 4 is well worth a play through!

IMO this is still one of the best games of all time. First released as a GameCube exclusive in 2005, Resident Evil 4 is now available on almost every console imaginable due to its huge popularity. The remastered version has lovingly touched up the original textures and graphics for Xbox One and PS4 hugely improving the look and feel of the game. The controls will feel clunky at first to gamers used to playing more modern third person shooters however you'll find you quickly get used to this within the first 15mins or so of gameplay. The game still feels spooky and atmospheric from the word go. The difficulty curve is brilliantly executed delivering great satisfaction when you outsmart and defeat increasingly challenging foes.Boss battles still feel epic 12 years on.The storyline and characters remain first class with the upgradeable weapons and inventory system a real highlight of this game and part of what made it so stand out over 12 years ago.Once you complete the one player campaign (can take between 15-20 hours for most players) the game offers four new one player game modes to keep the content fresh. You can also replay the campaign in professional mode (for an extra challenge) or replay with all your upgraded guns from the start to reek havoc on your enemies.Enjoy!Read full review...

Played this on PS2, Xbox 360, PS4 and Gamecube and now purchased for Xbox One.The best res evil game to date and probably one of the best games I have ever played. This game gave us one of the most terrifying enemies of all the res evil baddies... the regenerator.Gameplay is a perfect blend of action and survival horror, something the developers were never able to emulate in future games. The controls are a bit clunky and its a shame they have not updated them but that should not stop people playing a true classic. If you have never played this game do yourself a favour, you won't be disappointed.

Resident evil 4 was part of the legendary capcom 5 on gamecube even though only 4 released. At the time resident evil 4 was considered a graphical marvel and still one of the highest rated resident evil games ever. On xbox one graphics identical almost they just look better on a modern tv and there is no slowdown like on the original gamecube game. Controls are easy but dont really suit xbox but after a little bit you will get used to it.Theres a good amount of gameplay is still no1 resi game

Having enjoyed this game on the Wii, I thought I'd go with a HD revisit. Like many who love gaming, I'm not that good at it, age taking it's toll, so I nearly always go for the easy option. That is missing with this Xbox One version, so I find it very difficult to progress, ruining the experience. So beware. I'm back playing the Wii version, able to point where I will shoot/throw/hack. It's more satisfying being able to get to the end. Games are supposed to be fun, not a frustrating trial.

Great game but the graphics are very poor. Controls to start with are really annoying but you get used to them, switch aiming to same stick as moving. It’s not as scary as the others but that’s what makes it so good. The story is brilliant and it’s addictive, the second best resident evil behind the first one.

I have all the resident evil series and find this to be the best of them all with good graphics and storyline. At present I am playing the latest one, part 7 biohazard (which is very good) so creepy and still using the same ideas to scare the c--p out of you.

I must admit that I did not know thart this version was available. It is a not a proper full remaster but there are some improvements in the graphic, I am big fan of the original so go for it if you like Resident 4!

Resi 4 is one of the best in the series. The gameplay is still a lot of fun. I have completed this game many times over the years and always enjoyed each play through.
