The Resident Evil series is seven years old now, so you'd think its time was nearly up and that it would only continue for a strict fan-base. This isn't the case. The recent release of the remake of Resident Evil 1 and now a prequel to the series means there is no better time to get into Resident Evil. It is the gaming revolution that caused a sensation and created the Survival Horror genre in 1996. Read below for a breakdown of the game with positive and negative points:GRAPHICS:(+)Simply amazing. The sharp, pre-rendered locations are stunning and possibly the best graphics I have ever seen in any computer game. The backgrounds breathe with movement, a technique that has been perfected on the Gamecube, allowing pre-rendered backdrops to look alive and not static as they had in previous entries on the Resident Evil series. The colours work fantastically with the mood of the game and the cut-scenes are directed with amazing skill and are the most amazing I have ever seen in a game, surpassing those of Final Fantasy X in my opinion.(-) Not a single problem, there is not one visable polygon mistake in this game. The lighting is beautiful. The only problem I would mention is that sometimes the camera is at an angle where not every available route is visable for the player. I often missed whole areas because I simply couldn't see their entrances.SOUND:(+) The use of sound effects is very cleverly employed, zombies will quietly shuffle in the distance, as always, and this proves to add to the tension a lot. The sounds created by the monsters are very well done. If I only had a surround sound system!(-) The repeating footstep sounds can make the game sound a bit unrealistic, in the game "Silent Hill 2" for the playstation, hundreds of individual footsteps were recorded to avoid this, perhaps the game could have employed this technique? When you get used to the three or four different zombie groans, they just aren't scary anymore.MUSIC:(+) Very good, as usual. The music in the series is wonderful and the games' score is worthy of being a soundtrack to a movie. The music is very moody and slow, setting a perfect undertone for the visuals.(-) More please! Long areas without music meant for me the atmosphere lacked. The makers perhaps thought silence was scarier and perhaps this is true, but in moderation.PLAYABILITY:(+) Easy to get into if you're familiar with the series. Nothing has really changed and all the improvements made throughout the series remain.(-) The new system means you control two characters at once and there are times where this is difficult. I played the game on "Hard Mode" first which was a mistake, I thought I was good enough, but this game proves a new, and very difficult challenge on "Hard Mode" even for those experts of the series! I thought there were moments in the game where it was almost the luck if you survived - the computer controlled character can waste your ammo sometimes when you don't want them to, but you want them to be armed just in case. It's not really a bad point about the game, you just have to be very aware. You can never relax, which is actually quite a good thing in the case of this game.REPLAY VALUE:(+) Lots of extra stuff to do, like in all of the Resident Evil titles. It will keep you coming back and experiencing every inch of the game, which is worth doing!(-) After playing the game on "Hard Mode" you will be exhausted and won't want to experience much more for a while, but give it time, you'll want more.CONCLUSIONS:I was shocked at how long this game was and how amazing it looked. There are more kinds of monster in this game than any other in the series, which is refreshing - I didn't expect so much from what I thought was going to be a fairly short and lacking spin-off to the Resident Evil Remake. This is a full blown prequel that is if anything BIGGER than the remake! The introduction of two characters is great fun and the acting is (for once) really very good! The lip-sinc is perfect (as it's not dubbed, it's in English in Japan, just subtitled) and the story is great, explaining quite a lot and leading up to the events in Resident Evil 1. With the oppertunity of a prequel, more could have been explained and the appearance of some of the more mysterious characters of the series would have been nice (though there are a few suprises, I personally would have loved to have seen what Ada Wong of "Resident Evil 2" was doing during this time period). This game is perfect, it moves away from the more "hollywood" orientated road that "Resident Evil: Code Veronica" began to steer down but keeping the horror, action and character development that we've come to respect the series for in total tact. Well done Capcom!

Six years is quite a wait to see how the whole disaster began, so with anticipation and relief, I was finally able to discover exactly how the events in Racoon City came to be.Resident Evil Zero is set one day before Resident Evil. It’s the 23 July 1998, and passengers on the Ecliptic Express are enjoying their first class train journey to the Umbrella Corporation facility. Suddenly, a group of creatures pounds through the windows and begins devouring the unfortunate souls on the train. 2 hours later the S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team are approaching Racoon City and as they pass over the lifeless train on the tracks, the engines of the helicopter suddenly explode. They crash in the nearby forest, somehow survive and discover a nearby police van with dead passengers surrounding it, minus the killer they were transporting to death row. A survivor of the helicopter crash, Rebecca Chambers, conducts a searchlight tour and stumbles upon the train. The minute she enters two people approach her…and they sure as hell didn’t want her ticket. It was developed alongside the first GameCube adventure, which means I was expecting the same level of graphical detail. My expectations were excelled as Zero goes one step further down the photo realistic route. The last game was indeed a Noir experience but Zero has a dirtier hard-edged feel, thus the realism is even greater. The fine detail is very impressive, with empty or broken bottles on restaurant tables and bodies slumped over seats. Pre-rendered backgrounds may not be as advanced as fully interactive 3D environments, but they sure look gorgeous (or in this game’s case grimy).Where this title differs from it’s predecessor is in two new features. The escapee from the police van, Billy Coen, is your alternative character, but that doesn’t mean you can only control him or Rebecca individually. The X button switches between the two and I found this to be useful for very taxing puzzles when both of the character’s attributes are required. The feature itself is brilliant, although I had to make sure that each character wasn’t close to being disembowelled when I pressed X, as you can’t rely on the computer to control the other character if a zombie is nearby. Naturally the puzzles that force you to look in every nook and cranny make a welcome return, but the randomly placed ones don’t, as they still only exist for the sole purpose of annoying you.I was promised a brand new Resident Evil game, so I was surprised to see that the control system still hasn’t changed. The problem isn’t present if you are just browsing for something or exploring the area. But when a mutated creature is after your brains and all you can do is stare at a wall while performing a twenty-three point turn, you’ll be seeing Game Over shortly after. The controls aren’t as annoying as they seem but they do take getting used to, especially if you haven’t played any of the previous in the series either.Hopefully the game’s plot will make you forget about the controls, as the plot is strong. The interaction between the two protagonists is well scripted and I was surprised how attached I grew to the partnership. You may have heard Cypher say to Agent Smith in The Matrix, ‘ignorance is bliss’ and this definitely applies to this game. The more you discover about the story, the more urgently you will need a new set of underwear. This is pulled off especially well when you come across journals containing entries from Umbrella Corp. employees, as they add genuine tension, particularly when they mention a monster that was created and you know that you’ll meet it sooner or later. To put it simply, Resident Evil Zero carries all the features; gore and horror of the first GameCube title, but adds more Noir and a more appealing storyline. I’m not criticising Resident Evil, but Zero is a brand new adventure and a prequel at that; prequels tend to have more ‘PLAY ME’ appeal compared to sequels. However I was promised ‘the best Resident Evil yet’ but all it appears to be is an extension of the franchise and there are signs of the series beginning to fade. I can forgive it with this game because of the new features and genuine brilliance of it, but only if Resident Evil 4 is the game that Resident Evil Zero promised it would be, otherwise only die hard fan will care for Capcom’s survival horror series in the future.

Resident Evil Zero is the second exclusive RE title for the Nintendo gamecube after RE: Remake, and marks the first true game (although a prequel rather than a sequel) for the series since RE: Code Veronica on Dreamcast/PS2.The game allows you to control two characters (Rebecca Chambers & Billy Coen) fully for the first time, with a new feature in the games called character zapping which means you can instantly switch between the controlling of the two characters in seconds and give orders like attack or idle. For those who don't know, Rebecca was a secondary character in the first game and eventually the only survivor of the Bravo team who were sent in first to their deaths when stumbling upon the evil. This game, seven years after the PSONE original reveals what actually happened. At the start, the bravo team arrive to investigate an incident in the a neighbouring forest of Raccoon City when their helicopter inexplicably malfunctions. An emergency landing is forced with touch down in the forest where the team slit up to investigate the area. Coming across some bodies and documents, they find that a man named Billy Coen, an ex-marine on sentence of death for killing 23 people has escaped. It is up to Rebecca to find him while being stalked by a mysterious figure who seems to be the master of the leeches that infest the game. The first bit of the game takes place on an empty (or is it?) train, before settling into the more familiar surroundings of a mansion, church, training facilities and sewer complex.Graphics? The graphics are extremely well done, if a little bland when compared to the slightly more impressive RE:Remake. All the bosses are visually excellent, if not the best yet as are the two characters you control. The backgrounds are still pre-rendered, which you'll either like (great detail) or dislike (no 3D interactivity).Sound? For me, the game seemed one of the least musical of the series. Ther are at times, moments of silence which as in Silent Hill 2 can be well utilized at the right times for fear (although not as good as the forementioned rival game), what music that does rear its head can be at times forgettable. The music in the intro FMV before the title screen also doesn't quite keep in keeping with previous brooding scores. Highlights however, is the ending theme once the game is completed (nearly as good as RE2's end piano score) as well as the music that comes before encountering the leach zombies!Playability? The game mechanics and controls have remained the same as all the previous titles (which you'll either like or dislike for ints lack of innovation). Whatever your feelings, the controls have been refined and improved as much as they have ever been, and fans of RE will feel right at home. The zapping system is good, but can at times be fiddly when having to jointly solve puzzles or fight the bosses. The computer controlled partner is often better at attacking than you! Arguably this can detract from the fear, but I never noticed it. If anything, practice makes perfect with the system.Lastability?Without a guide you'll probably finish it within five days on normal mode. There's also hard mode if you can be bothered (nothing extra is revealed compared to normal, just the challenge). Like all the others before it, completing the game under the classic conditions will lead to extra weapons, clothes and a mini-game.Overall?Re:Zero is a classic game, yet there were a couple of times during gameplay that made me question whether it's the best yet and whether the character zapping works? By the end of the game and its climatic finale, I was well and truly won over except on the point of the zapping system which is alright for one game, but with Capcom waiting to use it for RE4 as well let's hope it improves and isn't as frustrating (especially wasting ammo when giving orders!). For anyone who is a fan of the series, this comes highly recommended especially for the character revelations of Rebecca and those 'dog tags' and salute. Is this the best in the series? Re:Remake and especially the undervalued Code Veronica (no.1 in my opinion)is the best!

a major criticism of the resident evil series are the awkward camera angles and clumsy controls. the camera angles are a necessary evil i find - in most cases you cant see very far, sometimes having to shoot enemies off screen, sometimes having to move so the camera angle automatically shifts to a different perspective which allows you to see any hostiles. everytime it does that your heart skips a beat and theres nothing like entering a room, hearing the sounds of grunting and hissing and not being able to see anything except your own character top down. inch forward and you find a zombie in your face eating part of your shoulder.brilliant stuff if sometimes frustrating.i gave it 4 but if i like to refrain from giving this top marks because i dont think any game is perfect. this game is beautiful, involving and elegantly crafted...while it lasts. resident evil veterans will get through this on normal in about 12 hours. i did it in about that. once you finish the game the only real thing to do is go through the game again but finish it in under 3 hours 30 minutes in order to unlock the rocket launcher and submachine gun like in the original resident evil. or play the leech hunter game to get infinite ammo for all weapons. if you made notes throughout the game you can do all that on the 3rd or 4th run through the game. in all thats about a week of solid gameplay. more for casual gamers but this wont last more than a month for the average player.all this is a shame though because resident evil zero is exceptional. more of an experience than a game, you WILL jump through the roof more than once if you play this late at night with the volume high. the story fills in a few of the gaps in the resident evil saga which is a fantastic story in its own right. the characters are engaging and beautifully modelled in 3d. everything in the game is executed with a certain technical brilliance which just leaves you thinking '12 hours. is that what all of this effort comes down to?' 12 hours to escape the marcus mansion, 12 hours to find out about the genesis of the T-virus and the identity of the bare footed man in the introduction. then 12 hours to do it all again. less if you attempt to unlock everything the game has to offer. then its back to regular gamecube games with regular storylines and regular, non-ecstatic gameplay.i wish there was more. like a good book you just dont want to get to the last page and have the blank cover tell you its all over. time to read another book.

The REmake of Resident Evil was a phenomenal success and one of the flagship titles for Nintendo's Gamecube system, so it was no surprise that another release would be hot on its heels. But could anybody have expected such a good game?To recap, Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield were originally sent into the Arklay Mountain range to locate the missing STARS Bravo team. Instead they found its scattered remnants (dead, undead or alive) in an abandoned mansion and lab complex, and ended up fighting for their lives. But Bravo team has its own tragic story to tell, and its last, desperate 24 hours are recounted in this stunning prequel from the viewpoint of rookie team-member Rebecca Chambers. It's her first assignment, and could well be her last...As it's another Resident Evil title you know what to expect; the usual item screens, weapons and game mechanisms, with the odd weapon upgrade to find and item puzzle to solve. But this instalment adds a new feature to the series now with the introduction of "partner zapping" - for most of the game the player has direct control over two characters, and with a simple set of options can set one character to back up the other when things get tight. With added support for swapping inventory items between them, this allows for a few new methods of solving puzzles and getting through some really nasty combat. However, the "survival items" from the REmake are not there, and this game has done away with item boxes altogether, instead allowing you to drop items and come back for them later. The in-game graphics are almost to the same quality of the cinematics - no small boast, even for a modern title - meaning that this is one of the few currently available titles that actually shows what the cube is really capable of. I can't wait to see what we get with the forthcoming Resident Evil 4 if this is only half of what they can manage...Overall this is an excellent game and it will give a player hours of fun. It's clearly had a lot of time and care put into its development and it's paid off admirably; it's well presented, well designed and easy to get into, even if you're new to the series. The story twists are well considered and fit nicely into the REmake, and I would say that if you're going to own one, then you really ought to own the pair. On all levels this brilliant title deserves Five Stars.

I just recently played this as I have a Wii and can now play all the exclusive Resident Evil games for the Gamecube. I have to say I'm very impressed with this and it is very close to being one of the best in the series. I love these games for all the attention to detail, you can go to most things in a room and investigate them. The locations are great, very creepy and atmospheric especially with the lighting/shadows done in real time! You have a good mix of puzzles, a wide range of enemies to shoot and plenty to do. The story fits in well with the rest of the series and it's good how some of the creatures seem to be "earlier" models of those in the later games! The new system of carrying things, although some don't seem to like it, is better and more realistic. The idea of putting things in a magic box for later that pop up anywhere was a bit odd. Using both characters to hold items helps get around this, otherwise it adds to the challenge as you decide what you should carry ammo or health as you venture deeper into the darkness...The idea of character swapping is great to, you can wander off separately to investigate or team up to take on a room full of zombies. Some puzzles will need both characters to progress to which is a nice touch. To change you just press one button to control the other character. This is a cool new option in the series of games and adds to the game greatly for replay value. The sound and graphics are very good as you would expect, and remind me of the Dreamcast version of Code Veronica. The animation, cgi scenes, lighting effects are great. All the locations look exactly as you would expect them to with great little details in the backgrounds. As for the sound the music is good as the tension mounts and danger is near the music changes to fit the scene. If you play with a surround sound system the extra bass is great for shotgun blasts and you can pick up little details like the heavy rain on the train roof, running underground water in the basement that you wouldn't notice otherwise.Once you complete it you have a tough mini game to play and this will reward you with extras in the main game to enjoy it all over again. If you love Resident Evil games you will love this, if you are new to the series then start here and you will see what all the fuss is about!

Initally, the game feels very special. The opening 5 minute intro sequence is by far the most impressive that I've seen on the GC and sets the tone well. The level of options is good enough for this type of game, with a wide variety of control configurations for every type of preference.Once started, you are once again a member of the S.T.A.R.S crew of monster cannon fodder, plowing through a captivating and cunning plot with more twists than chubby checker. After the first impressions have wained and you are stuck in a corner, back to the wall, with no idea how to get out, the frustration sets in quickly. Especially when the game is telling you that a door has something stuck in the hole and something sharp may dislodge it.Fair enough, you might think. But when you have a knife already in possesion and you cannot use this item to open the door, you start to think about the whole structure of the game. Why can't I just get out my trusty (and well implemented) 9mm handgun and shoot the lock off?The reason is, unfortunately, like all the Resident Evil games, the rules are unbreakable. The rigid game structure does not reward intelligent thinking, and like it's B-Movie inspirations you feel detached from the insanity which is being played out before you.So, yes it looks good, well, no that's not fair, it actually look fantastic, but that's not the point. Game structure needed to be improved on the Playstation original some 7 years ago, and now, only to have the graphics improved, you feel cheated out of what could of been a real zombie fest.If you like problem solving and endless object searching to open doors and soforth, go ahead. However, if you prefer games with more of a tempo, you may (you may not) find this too taxing on your time, but not your brain.

Resident Evil Zero (Gamecube)Ever since it's early release on the playstation, the resident evil saga has been a force to be recond with and resident evil zero is no exception. You first take control of Rebecca chamber's a low ranking member or the police's special star's bravo team and soon find yourself in trouble when you and your team mates crash land in a forest that is full of flesh eating zombie's. As you progress you meet your second playable character Billy coen, a renegade prisoner that has supposedly killed 25 people. These two lead characters soon decide to put their differences aside and try to escape their predicament. This game has been carefully created so that you have to use both characters to solve curtain obstacles, which makes co-operation a real necessity if you want to progress through the game. If you decide to neglect one of the characters they will die and it will be game over for you which means you really have to keep checking on both of them if they are separated at different parts of a level. The freedom to take the players in different directions really adds a new dimension to the game and with the vast array of enemy's you get to face it's a game you really won't want to put down. Graphics wise there isn't a game like it that could stand up to it as it seems to have built on the already brilliant resident evil remake that was brought out last year. Objects move as they would in real circumstances and the weather and sound effects are incredible, you almost feel like you are there. This is by far one of capcom's greatest games as well as probably one of the best resident evil game's to date. Capcom's attention to detail really show's the power of the gamecube at it's greatest, an absolute must have game for any gamecube owner.

A bad move it could have been to move the Resi series over to the gamecube, in some ways it is still a bit of a dissapointment, but you would be suprised how many people would buy a gamecube just to get this game! With Resi 4 coming ever closer and the release of the fantastic movie sequel, the resi franchise is at it's peak, again. The remake was great and proved what some effort can really do, however 2 and 3:Nemesis were highly dissapointing. Zero is a fresh and terifying new game and reanimates those dead cells that were the ever ageing resi franchise. The idea of this game is amazing and the plot really grabs your attention, for once the voice acting is not as dead as those zombies! The graphics are truly supreme and makes us wonder why some other games dont just put a bit extra effort in to make their games look as polished as this one does! There are plenty of new ideas here such as the switching between the 2 characters. The controls are what you expect really but that doesnt make a big impact on the overall gaming experience, unlike the zombies this game is not short lived and there are a host of new menacing enemies, alongside some classics. Its so great to once again get a resi game that truly scares us and nestles deep in our minds...unlike some of the more action oriented titles..ahem "Dead Aim". "outbreak" may be the best looking resi game on the ps2 but "zero" has The best resi graphics ever! Truly amazing!

Before the infamous "mansion incident" Rebecca Chambers a rookie member of S.T.A.R.S. (Special Tactics And Rescue Services) mooches about on a train trying to locate fugitive Billy Coen eventually the two co-operate and stubmle upon an umbrella research centre filled with the undead. This games takes the player to new depths an exposes some of the never before told secrets of umbrella and Rebecca and Billy are about to discover them.Resident evil zero introduces some new monsters along with the old monsters such as the zomies and the dogs. It has a new system where you can drop items on the floor anywhere you are, eliminating the old itembox system. Also there is a new partner zapping system which allows the player to switch between Rebecca and Billy as they need to, which along the way comes in very handy for solving some puzzles. The graphics are on the same high quality level as the resident evil remake. It also boasts a fantastic soundtrack. There were many aspects of this game that I think are awesome. There are only a few things that I wasn't so keen on the first was only having a six item capacity (12 if your paired up with Billy) and the leech monster/ zombie things, I found them highly irritating. However these are minor and for me they don't spoil the game on a vast level. So from me resident evil zero gets a well deserved 5 stars.

Alright, this one tries to do some things new for the Resident Evil series, and you've got to hand it to them; it’s about time too. The main game play difference is that you control two people for the duration of the game which does take away some of scares which were created before by isolation. You'd think this would make for some more interesting puzzles by using the two characters but unfortunately it consists mainly of sending items between two floors when your characters do get separated. The background story of the Leeches and Dr Marcus is very confusing, although it does explain how the T-Virus outbreaks were so contained in the other games. However, how come you don't see or even hear of the leeches in later Resi games? There are some nice revelations to the story; visiting faithfully recreated Resident Evil 2 locations, seeing more of William Birkin and a familiar Resident Evil 1 mutie (although it’s not explained how there are more than one before RE1) and, of course, leaving future Resi games open for Billy's return. This game won't take you long to complete; it took me less than a day to complete and there aren't any decent replay incentives like in Resi 1 on the Gamecube, but still; its Resi, its still a best-selling series and its got the engrossing plot and characters.

ok well, im making this review 12 years after the game came out but even now this game still holds up. Seriously iv seen 360 games look worse than this, the detail for a game of its age is incredible. Anyway on to the actual game... this game tells the story of how the t virus was created and gives some pretty interesting back story involving albert wesker and william birkin ( im assuming you know who those guys are but if you dont their both pretty much the most important villians in RE) . The character swapping mechanism is cool, both rebecca and billy have their own strengths and weakness' and billy is a really cool character. However the selling point of this game has to be the atmosphere. It's horrific, the lab areas you encounter later in the game were used to research the t virus and its obvious humans were used as test subjects, so you find torture devices covered in "old dried blood" and morges with feet sticking out of body bags. The sound only adds to it, the music in this game is unrelentingly forboding, it gives a constant sense of dread, its easily some of the best music in the series. This is one of the most ' love it or hate it ' games in the series, and i agree it does some time to get going, but once it grips you it will have you till its end. Awesome stuff

Anyone who has played re 1 will know that rebecca is not a great pianist. The same is true here. Not many people would think that you'd need an ex army soilder who looks like he wouldnt tolerate anything to play the keys to open a door! This is possibly the only resi evil i'd play over code veronica and nemesis! Great story line (as excpected)and great bosses. A mad doctor with a grudge against wesker? rite on! The enemies too are scary, funny and then just plain weird. Out Of Leech Men, Bugs And evil baboons this game surley takes the weirdness and horror of the series to new levels. You can also swich between characters which is good, but be aware that like jill and claire before, rebecca is not particulary strong so leaving her a million miles away and controling mr.cool (forgot the name..) isn't advised. The Weapons too are fun, my preference was always the hunting rifle. i prefer it over the shotgun even though t only holds 2 shells! The only flaw i have is that bravo team once again cease to really show. Even Enrico only shows up once. and then you have to fight a tyrant barley 2 mins later. Great game, highly recomended. Capcom, please release this on ps2!!!
