Yes, it's taken some time, but there's finally a proficient, fully 3D platform game for the PlayStation. It's impossible to escape not mentioning the last attempt at this, SISA's Blasto, so let's get that out of the way right here in the beginning: Insomniac's Spyro the Dragon excels over Blasto in every way imaginable. It has better graphics, a far more useable camera setup, tighter control, it isn't incredibly difficult, and is much, much more fun.Spyro lives in a brightly hued realm of magic much like that of a Disney cartoon, except without the severe toothaches that would provide. It appears that the dragons had been talking trash about the evil Gnasty Gnorc on TV, so, in retaliation,he casts a spell that imprisons them all in crystal. As the one dragon that must have come up under the spell's height/weight requirement, you travel the six worlds - which, incidentally, have six levels each - freeing the dragons and claiming stolen treasure and dragon eggs as you go.The gameplay in most levels of Spyro the Dragon is much like that of any other 3D platform game you've ever played, but this time you get a few extra moves beyond the standard. As a dragon, you can breathe fire, charge enemies using your horns, and glide with your short, stubby little wings. There are several flying levels too, which are similar to the arcade game Prop Cycle, save for having to pedal. In them, Spyro must collect a number of different items before the time limit expires, with each of the items providing him with an extra few seconds to grab all the rest with. Each of the worlds has a balloonist who will take Spyro to the next once a requirement has been met, such as freeing five dragons, collecting 2000 gems, and so on. Once to a new stage, the balloonist will always be willing to take you back. There's a lot to like about this game. The soundtrack, done by The Police's Stewart Copeland, is wonderfully atmospheric. The graphics are fantastic, with their dynamic lighting effects, a near-complete lack of pop-up, and well-designed great-looking characters. The level design is also exceptional, providing nice big worlds for you to roam around in and get enveloped into. This is really the first title to ever successfully pull off the whole video game adaptation of a cartoon world, and we all know there's been plenty of tries. On the play side, the level of control is excellent. It's supersmooth even without the analog pad, and a dream with it, especially when charging or gliding. Spyro also has the best camera setup since Rare's Banjo-Kazooie on the Nintendo 64. It begins with an intelligent chase perspective (which can be set to either passive or active modes) - the R2 and L2 buttons move your overall view left or right, and the triangle button is a tight behind-the-back look control. With all of these working in conjunction, the camera problems found in most 3D games are almost entirely gone in Spyro.Unlike Banjo-Kazooie, it's easy to tell how many items you're missing, both within a given level and all the worlds, through the use of the inventory screen. This is especially useful because accessing the game's bonus level requires that you free every single dragon and reclaim every bit of stolen treasure and egg, and it'd just be impossible without it.The only things that take away from the gameplay experience are that the levels begin to feel a lRead full review...

The predecessor, the sequel and now the anti-penultimately awesome game, Spyro: Year of The Dragon is a must have platformer. Regarding it's brilliance in keeping the game fresh and new, innovative and original, this game is exceptional in it's own way introducing new characters from the forgotten world being made playable to a certain extent. Now like the other games, Spyro has always had gems, certain items of great importance (Crystal Trapped Dragons and Talismans), well this time the items are Eggs that have been stolen by a Sorcerer, who can only enable her magic with the powers of Dragons who she vanished away years ago. Now they're back, hence stealing the dragon eggs so that she can regain her powers. She is helped by a Trainee Sorcerer who plans on keeping her legacy. The problem is the holes they come from come from the other side of the world - The Forgotten worlds. Which raises another problem - Whose going to fit down the holes? Well, Spyro of course! It's up to him to recover the eggs, pick up as much treasure as he can (the surprise at the end will be revealed to how powerful the gems really are). This game is really fun with really fun gameplay. You can go into bonus levels now in the levels to find other such things like: Eggs (of course). You can skateboard, Ice Skate, Play Hockey, Race and many more things applicable to the % needed to complete the whole game.It has a ton of replay value. Maybe even more than the originals that came before it, where you'll find yourself subconsciously playing the game without realizing how many things you've collected on the way.Trust me when I say that this game is worth it to children, Platform gamers and of course people who want to re-unite with the gameplay experience.I love it so much that it could be my favourite game ever on the PS1 (Or generally the best game I have ever played - but that's maybe raising the bar to high).

Spryo: The Dragon is the first game in Insomniac's incredibly popular series based around the young dragon who must rid the world of evil. In this first installment, Spyro must journey through five mysterious fantasy worlds to free his sealed Dragon breathren and defeat the cruel Gnasty Gnorc. For me, personally the first game is the best. I used to play it endlessly as a child and I bought it again recently since going through a nostalgia phase reminded just how much fun I had with this game in the past. For a game of it's time, Spyro is very imaginative and a rather unique series. A timeless classic in the adventure/platform games of the PS1 and a game that has undoubtedly remained populareven after the advances of video games over time.Of course compared to the graphics of modern games it would appear sub-par but for it's time they were quite remarkable and provide an enriching and imaginative world bound to delight players. The gameplay, as with most platformers is simple enough to grasp but there are still some head-scratchers in there to ensure the game isn't too easy. Despite it's simplicity this game is among the best, full of huge, colourful landscapes and some rather unique opponents. The game contains many items to collect, dragons to free and hidden areas to discover providing a lengthy gaming experience so you won't be finished too fast. So, the short version is this, Spyro is an immensely entertaining and fun platformer, suitable for any age and bound to provide players with an enjoyable challenge here and there but an on the whole relaxing playing experience. Whether you want to relive your favourite game from childhood or want to introduce your kids to some good old fashioned video games, I highly recommend Spyro: The DragonRead full review...

This was the first game I ever had and it is undoubtedly the very very best. The lands and playable levels are vast in every respect: landscape, levels, various puzzles, various vehicles; and the levels are challenging as well, so that there feels a sense of achievement in completion as well as the inevitable addictive adrenalin rush. The game play is not overly complex and though the graphics may appear to be rubbish to todays standards, this does nothing to detract from the charm of the cartoonish fun, and in further (awful in comparison) Spyro games where they have improved the graphics this then causes huge stretches of time to be spent waiting for the graphics heavy lands to load - notfun! This game is perfect for any ages as unlike many recent games the violence is cartoonish and the enemies merely disappear, yet don't let that fool you, in my experience that still makes it vastly enjoyable for everyone. The characters are lovable as well. This is a third in a trilogy, and the second is almost as good as the first so I also suggest getting it, as this answers some questions about character origins, and means that you can see the little hints of the previous game while playing. Finally I feel that the game style of collecting, solving puzzles and also defeating enemies is sorely missing in this saturated market, specifically the collecting part which sometimes can drive you crazy but is all worth it.

As the third and final Spyro game to be featured on the original Playstation as well as the last to be developed by Insomniac, Year of the Dragon is definitely the strongest game in the Spyro the Dragon series. While my personal favourite in the PS1 Spyro trilogy is Gateway to Glimmer I cannot deny that on a technical, graphical and gameplay level Year of the Dragon serves as the definitive Spyro experience. The controls are fluid, even surpassing current platformers in most cases, the levels are brilliantly designed and varied, the enemies and characters are unique and memorable... I could go on and on but I shall keep it brief and say that even by modern day standards this game is still a blast to play.It also benefits from having a graphical style that has aged amazingly well.Unfortunately however, this game also serves as the last truly great Spyro game. After moving onto new developers and a new console Spyro games plummeted in quality and unfortunately a character that was once the de facto mascot of the PlayStation brand is now relegated to a cameo in Skylanders. If you are interested in experiencing one of the best platformers ever made I thoroughly recommend you give this (or one of it's two predecessors) a try. You will not be disappointed.ps. Avoid the sequel "Enter the Dragonfly" like the plague. One of the biggest disappointments of my childhood.

I have not played the game for so many years, I wanted to play it after buying it for a friend. So I brought this product for myself too after buying the game for my friend. The settings, colours and layout of the game itself was great; the product casing was brand spanking new. No noticeable marks or scratchings with no immediate or signs of damages. The comparison to this product from others is that it is appealing. You really get your monies worth for the item of value. I would recommend this product from others.

A classic 3D platformer from a bygone era, and the start of something special. Whilst the polygonal graphics have aged a lot in over 2 decades, the artstyle is ever charming. If you liked games with charming characters and whimsical worlds (such as Super Mario 64 or Banjo-Kazooie) you'll love this (and especially the remakes that came out that year).

when I originally wrote my review I did not give a full description of the game, the purchase price was very reasonable and reflected the age and condition of the disc,my grandson is actually playing the game as I write and has had a good experience.i would definitely purchase from the seller again and was impressed by the speed of dispatch/service.

Seriously, one of the best IF not best title from Playstation 1. Bought for my friend as she did not have a copy and the remake is not up with the standarts sadly. Still have mine after all these years. Recommend to anyone who loves 3d platformers that are not overly difficult and have big variety in levels.

This item was bought for my Grandson, who wanted one for a long time but could not find the right one he wanted, until he was looking on my computer one day and saw this one, so I ordered it for him and he is thrilled to bits with it, he has most of the other Spyro games, and really does enjoy them all.

21.6.2009

I bought this for my kids, they are going through a bit of a renaissance with older console games at the moment. They both loved it which is nice as its a non violent, gentle, colorful, addictive game which makes a change from machine guns, explosions and high body counts! Recommended.

After my daughter had overplayed her first copy of this game and scratched it to bits she was absolutely ecstatic to finally get a new copy to play at Christmas. Copy was in very good condition and well worth the money. Thanks again.

This is definitely the greatest Spyro game made, and takes you right back to your early gamer years! I think it was a lot more involving and a lot more challenging than the first two games, but that's what makes it better!
