There’s still no sign of Resident Evil 7, but this spin-off sequel is not only the scariest the series has been in years but it has the best co-op too.Resident Evil Revelations 2 is a very peculiar game. We don’t mean in terms of the gameplay, which is a successful evolution of the 3DS original, but everything else surrounding it – starting with the fact that the 3DS is almost the only format this sequel isn’t on. Why it’s being released so quickly after the Resident Evil 1 remake, why it’s episodic, and why it was prioritised over the series rethink the franchise so obviously needs we can’t begin to fathom. But as ever the only thing that matters is whether it’s a good game or not and,so far at least, Revelations 2 is the best the series has been in a long time. Perhaps the most pressing of those questions is why Revelations 2 is episodic in the first place. To that we have no answer at all, as the game is already finished (we’ve been sent all four episodes, but have only played this first one) and there’s not much in the way of shocking cliffhangers. It’s especially odd as the episodes are being released weekly and the whole thing will be collected up and sold at retail by March 20. We’re only allowed to talk about Episode 1 at the moment but the basic set-up is that each download is split into two parallel stories, one starring Barry Burton looking for his daughter, and the other Claire Redfield attempting to escape from a mysterious Alcatraz like prison/laboratory complex. The story only just gets going in this first episode, but although it’s hard to judge just how crazy it will get by the end the dialogue is already authentically cheesy – and although the tone is a little too knowing at times it’s a relief to find that that script doesn’t take itself too seriously. The most distinctive element of Revelations 2 is that each of the two characters is aided by another, younger, character who cannot or will not wield a gun. In Claire’s case it’s Barry’s daughter Moria, while Bazza is aided by a mysterious young girl called Natalia. Resident Evil Revelations 2: Episode 1 (XO) – Barry kicks considerable ass Although the game can be played alone, alternating between the two characters when necessary, ideally you want to be playing Revelations 2 with a friend in split screen co-op mode. Although the Mercenaries style Raid mode will have online options patched in at a later date (couldn’t they just have waited until it was ready?) there are no plans to offer online co-op for the story mode. That’s another odd choice in today’s climate, but we can certainly imagine that much of the entertainment value would be lost if you didn’t have your partner in the same room with you. Barry and Claire control just like any other post-Resident Evil 5 character (i.e. they can walk and shoot at the same time) but there’s even less ammo available than the first Revelations and no evidence of that game’s shooter-heavy sections (and it was clear from our interview with the developers that these were intentionally left out). What remains is the closest Resident Evil has been to a true survival horror for a very long time. And that’s despite the normally emboldening nature of co-op play. Rather than extra firepower Moira and Natalia are essentially support characters, and the most aggressive Natalia can get is dropping a brick on an already downed zombie’s head. Her real value is being able to sense zombies through walls and spot hidden objects, like extra ammo, that Barry can’t see. Moira works in a similar way, except she has the rather less supernatural power of holding a torch. Since the enemies in Claire’s section tend to be stronger and more aggressive she’s also more capable in a fight, and although she still doesn’t use a gun she’s got a handy crowbar attack and a very useful dodge. Both support characters can also squeeze into small places and carry items for the other player. It’s quite a bold concept, especially as Capcom must know that some core gamers just won’t be interested in a character that can’t really fight. For more casual players though it’s highly appealing, giving them plenty to do that is genuinely useful, without turning the whole thing into a Gears Of War knock-off. Resident Evil Revelations 2: Episode 1 (XO) – asymmetric co-op The downside of course is that playing on your own inevitability gets a bit fiddly, as you swap between the two characters. If you don’t like that idea then the support character will more or less play themselves, with very little need for you to take control of them, but that will inevitably make the game harder for yourself as you miss out on extra items along the way. The girls are also much more effective as monster distractors when a human’s playing as them. But as long as you understand what you’re getting into, and pick the right partner, Revelations 2 is, well… something of a revelation. Barry’s side of things is the most like a traditional Resident Evil game, with its relatively slow zombies and what looks a bit like a Tyrant, but it’s Claire’s section that impressed us the most. The prison she finds herself in is almost pitch black and Moira’s use of the torch is absolutely vital, to both see where they’re going and to temporarily blind enemies. Not only do monsters loom out of the darkness at you but you’re constantly assuming that they will even when there’s nothing there. Instilling a fear of the unknown, and convincing you that there are even more terrible horrors than the ones you’re actually facing, is one of the marks of a true survival horror and Revelations 2 not only achieves this but does so in a fairly unique manner. It’s certainly the scariest co-op game we’ve ever played, even if it does pale next to some of the genre’s best single-player only games. We’ve not played the rest of the episodes yet, so we honestly don’t know how the whole game is going to turn out, but at this point it seems very promising. The story elements of this episode probably won’t last you much longer than two or three hours but with the addition of Raid mode that still seems reasonable value for money. Resident Evil Revelations 2: Episode 1 (XO) – Raid mode is offline for now Unlike the story campaign Raid really seems better suited to online play, but it’s still fun as it is: more of a straight shooting gallery than Mercenaries, where the goal is simply to kill all the enemies in the level (culled from the story mode and previous Resident Evil games). There’s a ton of unlockables to reward your efforts, including not just new weapons and customisations but whole skill trees of additional abilities and bonuses. Apart from the intrinsic single-player problem there are other issues, the most obvious being the distinctly last gen graphics. Although you get the impression this is more the fault of a low budget than a lack of talent on the developer’s part. Where they do draw blame though is the rather bland environments and monsters: the first Revelations was heavily criticised for its boring blob monsters and although Revelations 2 does better than that they’re still disappointingly uncreative for a Resident Evil game. The other issue is why on earth you wouldn’t just wait for the retail version, especially as it has some exclusive bonus content of its own. Unless you’re the world’s most impatient Resident Evil fan we can’t think of a single reason. But so far it looks like the game is going to be worth the, relatively short, wait. In Short: A successful start to the first episodic Resident Evil, with some genuinely inventive co-op features and the most effective scares the series has seen in years. Pros: The asymmetric co-op is a surprisingly innovative feature, and Claire and Moira’s pitch black perils are especially nerve-racking. Raid is an enjoyable evolution of Mercenaries. Cons: It’s not clear at all why the game is episodic, especially as Raid is currently offline only. Bland environment and monsters, and low tech visuals. Playing on your own isn’t as fun.Score: 8/10

S T O R YThe events of Revelations 2 are split across two timelines. Firstly, we have Claire Redfield and Moira Burton, now a part of anti-bioterrorism group Terra Save. The pair are kidnapped and dumped on an island by The Overseer, a mysterious figure who wants nothing more than to see the pair suffer. Six months on from Claire and Moira's disappearance, Barry Burton makes his way to the island in search of his daughter. Barry becomes partnered with Natalia, a lost little girl who has connections with the strange occurrences upon the island.Moira is definitely the breakout star of the experience, adding attitude and a kick-ass personality. Revelations 2 succeeds as a standalone title, doing well to keep a tight focus on the characters, yet, adding plenty of past story elements into the mix.G R A P H I C S & S O U N DThe art direction is generally uninspired throughout the game. Capcom has definitely cut back on the graphical quality, simply due to the downloadable nature of the game. The island is a foreboding setting, presenting gloomy prisons, claustrophobic forests and spooky urban settings. The variety of episodic format of the game keeps the environments as fresh as possible, but the richness of textures and character models are sorely lacking. The Afflicted are the game's gruesome bad guys, designed with the care and attention that many of the series' famed zombies have received.Voice acting is well delivered throughout the game, most notably Moira effortlessly sells everything she says. Sound design is strong, and the soundtrack does well to create a powerful mood.G A M E P L A YSurprisingly, the A.I. oriented mechanics of the game actually work. Being partnered with a companion is not a chore this time around. The first half of each episode will have you playing as Claire and Moira, and the second half will let you take Barry and Natalia out for a spin. What's great is that only one of the characters from each pairing is combat proficient, while the other can use other means to distract enemies. It's a healthy dynamic that ensures your co-op buddies aren't just passive guests.Revelations 2 plays almost identical to Resident Evil 6, except the frame rate adds a boost to game performance. Claire and Barry are the muscle behind the zombie slaughtering. Moira can aid Claire by using a flashlight to blind enemies, or even stun them with a crowbar. Natalia is a lot more vulnerable when aiding Barry, although she has a neat trick of being able to see enemy positioning; and she can hurl bricks at zombies for a quick distraction. Plus, she can crawl through tight spaces and evade enemy attack a lot easier. There are a good selection of weapons to come across, each can be upgraded with new parts. There are also new skills to learn i.e. improve firearm power/accuracy, allow Claire or Barry (when not in player control) to use their weapons. The Afflicted are not your run-of-the-mill zombies, they are far more aggressive and will charge towards you at any given chance. There are other enemies who have seemingly jumped straight out of Silent Hill, each with specific weak spots. There are some good boss battles in the game, some occur in really confined spaces so it's wise to keep your finger close to that dodge button. Ammunition is a seriously scarce resource on the harder difficulties, going in all Rambo is a very bad choice. There are also some light puzzles to overcome, which are just far too easy. The stealth sections should have been a more prominent feature, as they radically alter the play style and create much needed tension. The feeling of survival horror is a tad disjointed throughout the game. The level design is inconsistent, rarely presenting alternate paths and funnelling progression all too often.O V E R A L LRevelations 2 is a solid title, competently making up for the shortcomings of RE 5 and 6. The story is engrossing. However, the visuals need a loving touch; but it is the gameplay that helps the series somewhat returns to its roots.

This game is undoubtedly one of the best RE's in a long time. They have proven that you dont need fixed camera angles to make a good RE game. The Story: Claire redfield works for a company called terrasave who provide care and cleanup for people affected by bioterror incidents. (So yes, her big brother comes in with the BSAA and lays waste to monsters, and Claire has to clean up his mess lol). Claire has become friends with new member Moira Burton (yes you heard that right, BURTON) and while at a work do, armed masked men suddenly crash the party, kidnap Claire, Moira and their fellow terrasave employees and take them to an abandoned island. They wake up in a dirty prison cell, with coloured bracelets strapped to their wrists and so the game begins. Throught their journey, Claire and Moira are constantly taunted by the mysterious 'overseer' who is playing sick games with them. Thats not the only side though, Moiras father is none other than the RE legend Barry Burton! Upon realizing his daughters been taken, Barry grabs his guns, jumps in a boat and jets off to find her. Upon arrival at the island, Barry comes across a lost little girl called Natalia and chooses to protect her. However Barry dosent just have to play babysitter, Natalia has a strange ability that allows her to see enemies through walls. So with Natalias help, Barry desperately tries to find out what happened to his daughter while trying to survive the monsterous inhabitanats. The gameplay: this game to me feels like a mixture of RE5, RE6 and the last of us. It has RE5's controls, RE6's movement, and the last of us' crafting elements. You can craft molotovs, explosive bottles, smoke bombs, tourniquiets and wipes. Each one is useful and some are more effective on certain enemies. You can now crouch anytime you wish, this helps with the new addition of stealth kills or just slipping by enemies instead of fighting. ( I know, trying to slip by enemie in RE again!) Moira uses a flashlight to find hidden items for claire, and blind enemies which allows claire to follow up with an attack. Natalia aids Barry as well, she can see enemies through walls, weak spots on enemies and there are some enemies that only she can see. So sometimes as Barry you have to rely on Natalias directions to hit an enemy. She can also find hidden items like moira. Its a new twist on RE and it brings back the survival and scavenging aspect. The enemies: the enemy designs are great, some require stragedy this time, some are only visible to Natalia and the bosses are great. The characters: For an RE game this game has some great character development. Moira begins as a terrified young girl to a hardened survivor, and we see kind of an emotional side to Barry, as a desperate father trying to rescue his daughter. Over the course of the game, Barry and Natilia bond and theres a really significant moment where Barry tells Natalia about a tragedy that happened to the burton family and why him and Moira are estranged. By the end of the game the two have developed a father daughter relationship that reminds me a little of joel and ellie from last of us. They dont really do much with Claires character, though it is nice to see her back. The best new character though is the new bad guy, or should i say bad girl? Alex Wesker, the women mentioned in lost in nightmares makes her debut, and shes a force to be reckoned with. She's truly evil and sadistic, she even puts her brother Albert to shame a little. This game also has some of the classic chilling RE files that tell you how this island came to be what it is, and there are alot of refrences to past RE games. Paticulary RE5 and the first revelations. This creates a sense of consistencey and truly makes Revelations 2 feel connected to past games.Overall this game has it all, strong characters, an interesting story, a creepy atmosphere and most of all, fun gameplay. The graphics arent the best, but thats the last thing RE needed to focus on after RE6. Well done Capcom.

I already have a ps3 version of this but recently purchased a ps4 so it only made sense to get a res 2 disc for that machine.HOLY MOLY the difference in the graphics is unreal - it has this beautiful pop out 3d effect now, the target is sharpened and everything around it is slightly blurred giving the visual effect. It makes the game very immersive and exciting.I will forever be addicted to this game, not only because it has Claire Redfield in it but I love the idea of Res being a proper horror game again. Some parts of this game give me genuine moments of heart thumping and screaming obscenities at the screen. Its much MUCH darker then previous titles with PLENTY of guts and monsters, plus it also has sexy characters in it too. It has an old school feel to it but without the fixed camera angles and the tank controls. The camera can be moved but you will always have an over the shoulder view. In other words the character doesn't move, the world around him/her does.If you are worried about the horror factor please don't - I would give this a chance for sure. it is way darker then previous games and is most certainly NOT for children. There are plenty of obvious F bombs with disturbing images of twisted creatures that would give the little ones nightmares for the rest of their lives. So please spare them that.there is huge replayability for this game. Firstly there is the main campaign or main story with Clare & Moiré (4 chapters) running parallel with Barry & Little Natalia (yes she is a child but she is NOT annoying, she is actually cute as hell). There are bonus chapters for each new character moiré and Natalia that will keep you busy and if that's not enough there is one more part of the package for all you trigger happy fans out there.RAID MODE- Oh dear God I have met a force of addiction so strong I think I should seek out some sort of help to rip me away from this. raid mode is a series of gauntlets that allows you to CONSTANTLY upgrade, better weapons bigger monsters, bigger buzz etc. There is a very upbeat soundtrack that will have you tapping your toes and bouncing your head around. Be very careful with raid mode - I would suggest setting times to play and cut off times too. You can get very carried away with this. One thing that stands out for me in the main campaign was the nods to old-school fans - some inside jokes had me in stitches they were so cringie but so funny "Almost a Claire sandwich" or Barry holding up his python and saying "I have THIS!" It made me feel appreciated as a loyal fan and brought back of memories from when this whole thing started. It was an outside the box bold move and that is something that attracts me as a gamer. I like bold moves that are risky. I am hugely turned off by games that are "safe" and structured or predictable. So boring! So thank you Capcom for being awesome and bringing back some proper old school horror for us die hard Res fans. Please keep up the good work. Oh and if you re release Res 2 I will be forever grateful and will be first in line to purchase a copy. Huge Claire Redfield fan here!

Just completed the game (which I had on both PS4 and PC) and I gotta say.. I finally felt like I was playing Resident Evil the way it was in RE1-3.. not the modern action shooters like RE4,5,6 ( I only persevered to complete RE4 and played RE5 in coop mode which made it a bit bearable).Resient Evil 2 and 3 are still my ones of my favourite horror games of all times (along with Dead Space, Silent Hill and TLoU). This game brought hope to me that Capcom had finally decided to focus on the horror and puzzle elements along with a good story.STORY: great and enjoyable, not the most original though, but a good solid typical RE1-3 story, with interesting dairies/logs.. You got attached to Barry,Natalia and Moira. Believe it or not, I am planning to get the 2 extra episodes to get more of the story.. Its fun.GAMEPLAY: Initially I thought that I needed someone else to play it with in Coop since its a coop game, but I ended up playing it alone and Capcom did a great job making it easy to do so with one player. Not only that but also interesting, you cannot play with one character and ignore the other as both are vital to (some people who gave the game bad reviews where moaning about the frequent switching between characters which TBH I thought it was one of the best bits about the game, moreover, you can use the skill tree to make them smarter and more useful during fights which DOES WORK!).Unlike RE4-6, you don't get hordes of zombies and enemies that you need to shoot, which I liked about it (just like the old REs), you can even follow a stealthy approach to reserve ammo for boss fights. The latter was great, not just unloading all your ammo to kill the boss, but you need to find their weaknesses and kill them and use the environment as well. I loved it. Sorry guys, but if you like action shooters then this game is not for you!!Capcom also took RE back to the puzzles focused gameplay (not as hard as silent hill puzzles) but good fun to solve, also at the end of the game, I felt ALOT like I was playing RE1 or RE2 (not gonna spoil it for you) which I loved.Honestly, this game made me have second thoughts about refusing to play RE-Revelations 1.GRAPHICS: I played it both on PC and PS4 but decided it to complete it on PC since using a mouse is kinda better for me since its a 3rd person shooter and my aim is far better using a mouse (saving ammo). I also played it at 1440p (2K) which was good (not the best graphics but beautiful and atmospheric).OVERALL: If you have been craving for a Resident Evil game like RE1,2,3 or Veronica, and hated RE4,5,6 then this would be the perfect RE for you and the closest to the old school RE but with modern engine and improved graphics. I tried the RE1 remastered version and I just felt it was so dated but this one made my day!! You will enjoy the suspense, horror, puzzles, story and nostalgia that we always loved about Resident Evil.I am really looking forwards to play RE7 with PSVR.

Revelations 2 is welcome follow up to the first Revelations, which I really enjoyed for it's variety, gameplay and fun bosses. This new game follows the same style, and although the overall experience was great, in some ways I had a less enjoyable experience. The word "frustration" is not something that should ever come up in a RE game, but it did here. More on that later.Gameplay follows the first Revelations, in that you play with a partner at all times (who is AI controlled). There are four chapters to the game, each with two sections, one for Claire Redfield accompanied by Moira, and one for Barry Burton, accompanied by Natalia. You'll be fighting through factories, sewers, laboratories, villages and caves, all the while meeting gruesome enemies and large bosses. There are weapons to choose from and combat is satisfying, all standard for a RE game. But now I have to get on to the negatives (spoilers ahead):Firstly, although you can swap between the characters now, you can't make them work together. This game was designed to work best with co-op play - two people play it, one controlling each partner. Played alone, you cannot make the two characters co-operate as you intend them to. Each time you switch, you just have to hand back over to AI with the other character. Many times in the game, Claire and Moira need to do two specific things simultaneously. As a single player, you cannot make this happen, and that is annoying. Same thing with Barry and Moira. My other gripe was that there are two endings. and unless you know what to do at a very specific point, you might get the bad ending. I got the bad ending and I was furious, because there was no clear way of knowing that I had "done the wrong thing" (you'll know what I mean if you research this, but I don't want to spoil it here). I had to play the game again to get the good ending. And on my second playthrough I realised how disapointing the bad ending actually was. The good ending is substantially more fun, and finished the game properly. In the game's defence I will say that there are more choices to make than just this that do lead to a different play experience, so maybe I will end up playing it again. It's not that difficult, so I can face it (especially as I played this following Bloodborne, so RER2 felt like childs play!), plus I was having fun while playing, most of the time. It's not a long game, but it does have two additional short bonus chapters, plus the "Raid" mode which is basically just fighting tournaments for those who can't get enough. I've given it 4 out of 5 stars, the loss of a star is for the two niggles I mentioned above. Otherwise, both of the Revelations games have been better than the miserable "Resident Evil 6", so that alone is a good quality assurance from me!

At this price I felt Revelations 2 was good bang for your buck. It plays much as I remebered from Resident Evil 4, but clearly the budget was not as big. The environemnts aren't very inspiring to say the least, nor are the enemies. However that didn't really stop me getting quite adicted to this game. It's easy to play with little to overthink other than a simple upgrade table and some skill perks in the main menu. Other than that you'll be blasting your way through infected hordes most of the time. Enemies offer some variation, I partcularly liked the invisible flying 'thing', but most of the time there's nothing hugely taxing. However lining up a quick headshot or blowing up a glowing puss growth on a zombie is always fun.Just like all Resi games it has ammo and health pickups and a limited inventory space. Sadly the weird merchant who used to sell you items in resident Evil 4 is still AWOL... I miss that guy.Revelation 2 uses an annoying "TV style" approach to its episodes. A novelty that wears thin quick after your umpteenth "previously on revelations 2". However the in game story is quite good. The mix of main player with 'side-kick' works well. Each is used to solve various puzzles or back each other up. Jumping between Barry & Natalia and Claire & Moira adds different perspectives to the story.Revelations 2 also features a Raid Mode. You can test your endurance and skill with other players against waves of enemies. You can also level up and custmise your character. It adds a lot of extra longevity to the game.Overall I enjoyed it. Although it's no triple A title, for the price, it's very good and a worthwhile purchase.

Pros:- Graphics are pretty good- Story isn't convoluted- Co-op largely works even in single player mode- Controls function well once you get used to them.Cons:- A little short; it appears you are expected to replay the game to find everything and upgrade characters, but I lost interest after one play-through.- Some 'puzzles' are more of a nuisance, with the generator task in Barry's story being particularly monotonous and cumbersome.- You play Claire and Barry's stories alternatively; while the overlap helps coherence, it also increases repetitiveness as you can pass through areas twice.- Having to manoeuvre two characters can become tiresome, especially when completing mundane tasks.Far too often was my way blocked by a few boxes, meaning I had to endure a significant detour, when in reality the obstacles would have been easy to move or climb over.- Character upgrades were slow to achieve and seemed to make little difference to my experience.Overall, there is slightly more emphasis on the action than the horror here, and although the game is short it does not outstay its welcome. It seems that the last decade has seen Capcom take the RE4 formula and continually tweak it to make new RE games, and saturation has taken hold. I have yet to play RE7, but I look forward to it. This game is worth getting on the cheap. Hardcore fans may enjoy the content found in multiple play-throughs.

I'm aware that a majority of Resident Evil fans are disappointed with RE6--enough to not want to bring it up (however, I, myself, enjoyed it and the storyline, despite it's big difference in comparison to prior RE games, yes). So, I'm sure they're really pleased and glad for RE2 because I feel it brings back senses of the old RE games with puzzles and characters Claire and Barry, and I think the episodic format and option to play all four characters is a great bonus. I finished this game last year but I'm still very much enjoying the Raid Mode. If you buy, I'm sure you'll love :)

6.6.2016

A good game - not the greatest 2 player game though (the second character is always a 'support' character who cant use many weapons etc). As a single player game swapping between characters to complete certain elements is good but can get a little annoying - the same is true of the storyline which is good but jumping back and forth between the 2 sets of 2 characters (separated by a number of months) which can get a little irritating. Its a good game which took about 10 hours to complete ... but doesn't really scream out for a replay.

19.8.2015

I like the new story and the main campaign can be played with my friends because of co-op mode. The in-game graphics could have been a lot better. In the main menu there is "Raid mode" where you find yourself on a level shooting/evading monsters to gain experience points and you can choose to do this alone or co-op. In "Raid mode" you cannot design your own character but through gaining experience you can change outfits, customise weapons and change the skills for over half a dozen default characters.

Been a huge fan of the resident evil franchise.Even bought a gamecube to play res4 rather than wait for it to come out on the ps2. This has to be one of the best of the franchise. Was rather disapointed with res 5 and res 6 but that wont stop me from loosing my faith in the franchise.Revelations 2 feels like res 4 and has a great story. it frels fresh and back to its roots. Definatly if your a res fan but this game. The new remake of res 1 on playstation store is well worth the cost.

I saw footage of this on youtube of the main game the backgrounds looked plain and too silent looking (i like silent hill but don't want resident evil turning into it)When i heard Claire,Jill,Chris and Leon was all in Raid mode i had to get it.Raid mode is addictive i've had this game over a month and i play everyday,i've only played 1 episode of the main story. It has had a free update there are now more costumes i really hope there are more free updates in the future.
