Gears of War is a classic Xbox 360 title that lead to a highly successful trilogy and what I personally consider as some of my favourite console titles ever made. But unfortunately, even Gears of War didn't age well in my eyes with monotone graphics that arguably suited the game's aesthetic more than others of the time period, the lack of control evolutions from it's successors, peer to peer multiplayer that has the novelty of player hosted games instead of matchmade despite the poor netcode, and cutscenes with cinematography that borders on drunk. Thankfully, The Coalition with Splash Damage went for a remaster effort that didn't just end with visual & audio upgrades. This remaster starts with the visuals, providing a full visual overhaul for the assets and bringing a welcome colour to the graphics at a native 1080p resolution (Although remaining at it's 30fps performance for Campaign unless played on the Windows Store release unfortunately hampered by issues), then faithfully reworking the cutscenes into replayable pre-rendered files with full motion-capture and vastly improved facial animations with polished cinematography that just makes watching them a superior treat to it's predecessor, then updating the audio with sound effects from the sequels or made from scratch entirely whilst entirely retaining the memorable voice acting from the original. All of these extending to the additional chapters later added for the classic's Windows release now available to be played on a console for the first time, filling in a sizeable gap between the end of Act IV and what used to be the beginning of the previously short Act V.Then it further enhances the game with gameplay improvements seen in the sequels such as smoother cover to cover movement, the ability to pick up ammo & revive team-mates whilst in cover, select weapons during a Roadie Run (The game's concept of sprint) and spotting targets to be marked for yourself & co-op buddies (Which by the way can still be played via split-screen) to keep better track of.And then it completely improves the multiplayer with a higher frame-rate of 60fps, the aforementioned control improvements, gametypes seen in the sequels including King of the Hill & Team Deathmatch, dedicated server support & spectator mode in light of it's revived focus on competitive gaming. There are also an abundance of additional characters to unlock mostly ported from Gears of War 3 via rank up, as well as a high number of weapon skins unfortunately mostly only available via monetary purchase. As a bonus, the collectable COG tags now unlock pages for four freely included comics from the Gears of War graphic novel series. Whilst most of them are not among my most recommended, they can make for a good read & reward for finding all of the collectables. It's rare that a remaster comes along that either makes me want to play the original more or misses too big a mark to become an adequate replacement, but in my book, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is that rarity. If you are looking for a reason to own or hold onto an Xbox One, I would dare say this would be one of them.

Wow where has the time gone? Its been 10 years since the original gears of war blew the gaming world away with its raw gameplay, originality and graphics beyond its time. Fast forward to the present and an all time classic and probably the game ive spent the most time on my whole life leading san andreas and COD 4 has been remastered for the new generation. The most obvious place to start would be presentation. What was ome of the main attractions to the original was graphics which back in 2006 was way ahead of any other game on console by miles. New technology advancements in the xbox one means the game can now run at 1080p and 60fps so we're talking advanced pc-like graphics here people and it looks beautiful.Every map, every animation, character, weapon and tree has been redone with next gen glory and its made an already impressive looking game look even more impressive. Experience blockbuster explosions and battle scenes or the satisfying feeling of using a chainsaw to kill an enemy with blood splattering all over your screen and character in glorious hd, gears offers it all and more. The gameplay is true to the original and hasn't been edited to feel more like gears of war 3 or judgment which i prefer in all honesty i still stand by my opinion that gears of war 1 was the most gritty, realistic looking and 'less animated' of the saga and this remaster just further wncourages my opinion. The movement isn't so fast it looks cartoonish and weapon controls are simple and easy to use even for newcomers to the series. The campaign has never looked so good with epic games remastering and changing almost every cutscene in the story which means it genuinely isn't the exact same as the original with even more cinematic moments on screen. The 2 player story co-op offers players a chance to complete the adventure with a friend and the campaign has added chapters from the pc release which has never been seen on consoles and really makes the campaign feel longer and more fulfilled, it also adds a spectacular boss fight into the mix too.The multiplayer which was an innovative breakthrough back in 2006 returns with a few tweaks and complete list of maps all remastered. The addition of some new modes such as team deathmatch and king of the hill make an already fun multiplayer experience more diverse and will really keep you occupies for hours on end with its ranking system.Gears fans will see this as the holy grail and newcomers to xbox one or the gears of war series you are certainly in for a treat. As far as games on xbox one go this is a must own, a masterpiece full of grubs. 9.8/10 *****

Truly a phenomenal game and one of my if not my favourite Xbox exclusive titles. I decided to do this review because I'm playing through it again. The things that make it stand out from the original are the graphics and frame rate, some extra campaign missions that previously were pc exclusive, and some multiplayer maps that were dlc before. Here we can relive the memories of playing as Marcus Fenix taking on the countless hordes of the locust with meeting very memorable characters along the way.The game is very distinct with fun combat, although this game that was made over 10 years ago I still enjoyed it as much as I did when I played it several years ago. It's very nostalgic coming back to this game remembering how immersed I was especially the first time I came across the Berserker, the campaign is linear but it's a shooter not an open world exploration game, these games are meant to be linear. The story is strong and fun and it's great that a game like this supports online or split screen co-op so you can play through this fun, and difficulty provided, tough experience with a mate or even a stranger online or if you'd rather play online versus it's here for you. This is one of the defining game franchises for Xbox and rightfully so. I can't think of any games that have satisfied me as much as say, when I'm behind cover shooting at a drone and notice a wretch coming at me, swapping to the gnasher, leave from cover and blow him to bits in a satisfying gorefest back to the drone I was focused on earlier. This is a game that every Xbox owner who is a fan of shooters should own. I hope they give the remaster treatment to Gears 2 and 3 as well but that might be a bit much.Hopefully you found this review helpful, hopefully you have as much fun with the gnasher and lancer as the rest of us who love this game did and still do.

I usually found the original version of the first Gears of War a little boring. Still a good game but from the second one onwards was always able to hold my interest much better. The new Ultimate Edition has really made the difference. The extra levels, the better graphics (which make navigating much easier). It's the little things that have made the difference. It brings Gears 1 more in line with later releases and now I can say with certainty that I love this game. I've had 10 times more fun playing this release than I did with the original. That said, it's not perfect. Which is why I gave it 4 stars as opposed to 5.I haven't tried multiplayer as I don't have Xbox Live Gold so I don't know what that's like. But what I'm talking about is campaign. My criticism comes from the friendly AI. I think it needs a patch there. Dom is the worst, he rarely ever followed me when he was supposed too and I often ended up fighting battles by myself as the other squad members where off stuck earlier in the level.I didn't find it game breaking or anything but it was a bit frustrating.Apart from that, I can't find anything to fault about it that wasn't already present in the original.I really enjoyed the new chapters as I'd never played them before. I'm not going to go into too much detail as I do not want to spoil anything. They were very fun though and I think it did help the story flow much better though. It really has left me wanting more!

First game a I bought for my Xbox one, having left Xbox of playstation, but on my return gow seemed a fitting title since it was the first I got for the 360 nine years ago, at the time gow looked incredible and the story and game play did not let it down, but on the Xbox one it is one of the best looking games I have seen on next gen in the same league as the order for the ps4 which is a great looking game, but where the order has a very short campaign gow is even longer than the original having perviously only pc levels added to the console version, this coupled with the nostalgia and the prospect of 2,3 and judgement when backwards capability is out later this year seems a great deal for 25 pounds given its a rerelease, much like the last of us on ps4 people will complain that it's just lazy to make the same game again but I am of the opinion gears was one of my favourite games even and I don't mind one bit handing over more of my money to Microsoft as the first time round I got more than my money's worth and this time I expect it to very similar.

This is one of the best games I have ever played, I remember playing it almost 9 years ago on my 360 (time flies) and at the time, the graphics were mind-blowing. So I felt I had to pick this up as it's fairly priced. I purchased it on the XBO marketplace.the graphics are amazing. The sound is amazing. The campaign is amazing. The online is amazing but I'm quite rubbish at it! The campaign is 1080p 30fps, where as the online is 60fps. My ONLY complaint about this is that the friendly AI is rubbish and I'm surprised they didn't tweak it for the remaster. Dom is constantly going down and I get killed half the time trying to bring him back up!The enemy AI are brilliant though and can be quite challenging at times.Buy!!This ultimate edition comes with 20 multiplayer maps and extra chapters from the story that weren't on the 360, but only the PC version. I recommend this game as it's so fun and even has co-op. Also, if you purchase this before the end of December, you will get the 360 versions of Gears 2, 3 and Judgement for completely free!

If you played GOW on the 360 back in the early days, then you will no doubt recall the stunning graphics, cutting edge CGI cinematic and the originator of true cover based shooters the world over! Many have copied but none have surpassed. The original still holds up today, even if the graphics are not so cutting edge by todays standards. This remastered original shows how it is done though! Everything runs at a lovely 60fps with every model, background, cut-scene, even the bullet shells spraying from your Lancer Rifle have been remastered in stunning HD.Gears has never looked better. Take a trip down memory lane and find that unlike most rose tinted replays, this one is every bit as good as you remember! And when you throw in the download codes for the Gears trilogy (plus GOW:Judgement) thrown into the package as a special thank you from Epic, this has to be the best remaster to date and sets a very high bar for all future remakes. You owe it to yourself to play this!!

Played gears from the beginning and loved the franchise so it would be an instant 3/5 regardless. The other two stars which I wouldn't give if i didn't feel it deserved it are definitely well deserved. I understand some peoples frustrations like strange head shots from the gnasher or weak grenades/boom shot however overall I have to say the game is very balanced.I am an all rounder (meaning I don't just pull the gnasher out and pre-active) using all the weapons in the map when I play and feel that for 90% of the game it is balanced well.Overall though:-Graphics look great-Mechanics feel amazing-weapons are balanced-pre-actives are a bitch but you can win with skill-the main issue I have with the game is the social/competitive sections. They should have more options to play in competitive like Tdm or koth however I can deal with blitz.Although there are some issues I still give it a solid 5/5

I bought this as there was a deal to get all of the GoW games on Xbox 360 to play on the Xbox One. I haven't play them all to death and wanted to before carrying on with the series when GoW4 is released.I loved GoW when it came out, and was one of my favourite games at that time. A review of the game itself would be 5* as to me is one of the best shooters ever made. However, I'm reviewing this edition of the game, not just the game itself. For the price at the time of purchase, it's a little steep for just HD release. As now the limited time offer where you get the four 360 titles with it is now over, the deal isn't the best.I would fully recommend playing this game, it's amazing, but if you should buy this HD version or just play it on 360 I'm not sure.NOTE: Part of this purchase is early access to the GoW4 Beta, this is not yet downloadable so has been discounted.

What a great game this still is. We all remember this classic from the 360. It was this game that I believe paved the way for the 360 to be the huge success it was and win the console war for the previous generation of consoles. This updated version looks fantastic and is still as gripping as it always was. Stick it in insane difficulty and partner up with a friend and you're in for 1 of the best gaming experience's you could ever wish for.The only criticism I have is I think this new updated version should have included the very popular Horde mode. I know it wasn't in the original (which is why I haven't deducted a star)but it would have been nice.Gears of War will forever be remembered as a classic that moved the needle in the gaming world influencing many games to come so you really are missing out if you not play this improved version.

I purchased the original Gears of War for the Xbox 360 when it came out. I used to own the collector's tin, and it was great. I didn't get into the next games in the series because I thought to myself that I couldn't get into it, but that was when I downloaded Gears of War 3 when it became available to download for free on Games with Gold on Xbox 360. I actually got into it, so I was wrong - or maybe I've got more experience in video games now and more knowledge than I did back then.Gears of War: Ultimate Edition for Xbox One is a remaster of the first game. The game features new graphics, and new content that's not in the original game. If you were a fan of the original game, then this is still worth the money for the new content.

The game itself is fantastic, if you played this on the 360 then you know what you're in for, the development team have done a decent job in porting this remaster the current generation of consoles but there are a few issues that could be ironed out. I have noticed some texture loading which can take you out of the experience from time to time, the AI of both allies and enemies at times can be frustrating/laughable; (I would recommend playing with friends). I haven't been able to test the online multiplayer as my game is throwing up errors saying i'm not connected to Xbox live which is false (no online achievements for me :( ).TL;DR: Same old gears, with a few bugs thrown into the mix.

What a blast from the past, I remember playing this on the 360 and really enjoyed it, not only the story mode but the online multiplayer also, sadly the 360 made way for a Wii U (for the kids) much to my disappointment, although I had a blast playing Super Mario Kart but that`s a story for a different day! This remastered original shows others how it should be done, everything is in stunning HD quality, 30 FPS on story mode but 60 FPS in online mode, this has really re-ignited my gaming fury and I am so looking forward to Gears 4.Item arrived prompt & well packaged. If you found my review helpful please click the 'I found this helpful link below' Thank you Very Much!

I can't believe I forgot how good the original gears of war game was! Atm I have gears ultimate, star wars bf, rainbow six siege and fifa 16. However, the only game I have been playing since it arrived in late November is gears, I can't get enough of it. The replayability is as excellent as i remember and now theres the bonus of really impressive improved graphics. If you're a gears fan then this is an absolute must! Additionally, if you've never played gears (like alot of my mates who like moi are absolutely loving this ultimate edition) this is a great time to start especially considering that gears of war 4 will be out later this year!!

The Dady of all shooters ? absolute epic story and online 10/10. After a lengthy break from the series it was great to jump back in with a beautiful looking version of in my opinion the best of the series. The Kryll and Beserkers didn't really make it into the rest of the series so it was nice to encounter them again! This was Epic Games at their peak and an incredible game when it first launched and with a graphics remaster it totally holds up. Blasting away Wretches with a Gnasher Shotgun will make anyone feel badass! The Coalition overall did a great job making a great game look even better! It's a must buy.
