To try and encapsulate the concepts behind Project Zero II, I will say this: Japanese-aesthetic survival horror where you're without weapons in the typical sense of the word, playing as two young girls in a seemingly "lost" village. This might well sound boringly generic in terms of game design but those talented designers at Tecmo tend to produce games worthy of labels such as "excellent" and "brilliant" rather than anything deviant or, simply crap. Your sole weapon in this game is a camera, or the Camera Obscura to be precise, with which you effectively exorcise spirits and demons that happen to be lurking in the mentioned village. It can be upgraded with various lenses and artifacts that help you either find the next path you need to take or simply to give the exorcism power greater strength. This is a director's cut version of the original which graced the Playstation 2 last year and the enhancements it boasts are that of a survival and first-person mode, both of which are there to make the game that much more tense by difficulty and perspective since games aren't evolved enough to bestow peripheral vision just yet.The aesthetic of the game is a thoroughly dark and constructs a foreboding atmosphere for you to explore, and in parts includes quite a "grainy" look from the often fixed camera perspective, reminiscent of the Silent Hill series. The film resemblance also carries on to the usage of the camera too, where capturing the ghosts and spirits feels like you're shooting another sequel to the Blair Witch. The game's puzzles aren't too cryptic but help to drive the plot, most of which is uncovered via scraps of newspaper and various diaries in the homes of the empty village. All in all, this is a freshly revised take on an old genre of gaming and well worth a look for anyone who enjoys the survival horror genre, or even action-gamers looking for something a little more cerebral.

After finishing the original project zero (but with only one of the endings so far) I had to grab this sequel. Everything that flawed the original has been tuned up a notch, though there are a few nagging problems with the clunky controls.Project zero 2 is bigger, scarier and graphically better than the original -its what you'd expect from a sequel. From beginning to end it tries to mess your head up with wierd noises, gloomy visuals and really disturbing ghosts to capture. The Xbox version now comes with a new ending -that's FOUR in all. I've managed to get the normal ending but to unlock the others means playing it on the other difficulty levels thats roughly 40 hours worth of brown trouser time. The normal setting wasn't particularly tough- it wasnt a breeze mind, and i was glued to my xbox from beginning to end.On top of that theres all sorts of typical Tecmo type things to unlock, costumes, game modes and CGI movies- but theres no way i'd want to play it all over again to see two polygon girlies in a lovely new outfit- like in dead or alive!I wont spoil the story- but it all starts with you (Mio) and your twin sister (Mayu) getting trapped within All Gods Village after following a crimson butterfly. There are genuinely spooky moments within the game and you've got to keep your senses tuned in unless you want to end up ghosted to death. The few problems i had were, again, the controls. Mio doesn't snag on objects as much as Miku did in the original but it still feels quite clumsy- and what really takes the mickey is the unbelievably slow pace she runs at. You wouldnt gingerly trundle along when you've got some evil spirit chasing you. I know it adds to the tension but come on!Other than that i cant complain. Great game!

I'm a huge fan of survival horror, from the Resident Evil series, to Silent Hill, to Siren, but Fatal Frame/Project Zero II: Crimson Butterfly is one of my favourites of the genre! If you can get past the cheesiness of using a camera to dispose of your ghostly adversaries, this is a great and very unique experience. If you're a fan of survival horrors like me, the gameplay will be familiar (fixed camera angels, etc) and should be very enjoyable for someone who already enjoys games in this genre. The drawbacks of this game is that for me it wasn't all that scary. I kept seeing it on "top 10 scariest games" lists, but for me, although scary in places, it wasn't all that bad :/ Also,if you've played any other survival horror game, the puzzles in this game will be easily dealt with, although some can take a while still and are still interesting enough to keep the gameplay engaging. Overall, it's a decent length game (under 10 hours for me), with loads of unlockables and "Nightmare Mode" to keep you replaying! The story is great, English translation brilliant (much better than Siren!) and is a gripping game from start to finish!9/10 for me. A 10 for me would have been this game but just that little bit scarier, which would have made it perfect. I just hope the 3rd and 4th games achieve this, as I will definitely be checking those out! :D

Project Zero 1 was an amazing game, state-of-the-art graphics for the time and brilliant gameplay, something that not all survival horror games have. And the one quality that no game except it has done, and that's given me the creeps.Crimson Butterfly kicks off with two identical twins exploring a forest. This is something that has been done so many times, so when I started playing the game I thought 'Not another forest game' but then the game changed into something completely different. You enter a small abandoned village and your sister 'Mayu' goes all weird. You immediately know that something is going to happen. So that the twists of the game aren't ruined I'm not going to go into any more detail. If you want a game where you go and kill loads of zombies or blow up cities than get Call of Duty or Medal of Honour, many of my friends do not like this game, but that is because it is different. You need to use Survival skills to survive, since believe me, Project Zero is not an easy game.My recommendation is to get Project Zero 1, since this is not as good as the first, nor is Project Zero 3 or 4. None of them live up to the first, but this game is still good.Graphics: 5 out of 5Tension: 3 out of 5Gameplay: 3 out of 5Controls: 5 out of 5

Forget everything else. Just for a minute forget that you are safe, at home, seating in your sofa. Turn the 5.1 surround system on, close your eyes and listen to the music when the game starts. Just sit there for a while. Then, open your eyes and remember that you are living your personal hell inside a traditional Japanese village. I promise you will be scared! This Xbox game has enhanced graphics and 5.1 surround sound, so you will be able to fully enjoy all the little details in the sound. I have the PS2 version of this game, but I had to buy this one and I do not regret it at all!

Horror fans will definitely enjoy this game about a girl searching for her sister in a haunted village in Japan. Armed with an enchanted camera, she must battle evil spirits in order to rescue her sibling. Brilliant atmosphere, this is an experience you will never forget.
