Have you ever wondered what it's like to go ghost hunting? Well, now you can in this original take on the horror franchise called Project Zero (aka Fatal Frame in other countries) for PS2 and Xbox. You start the game as Mafuyu Hinasaki (Miku's brother) for a short section of the game until he suddenly disappears in Himuro Mansion while he is looking for a someone. When he does, you'll be in control of his sister, Miku - wondering where her brother went.Who would of thought that a camera would be a useful weapon for killing things. Apparently, that came true and that idea became a great idea. The camera (called Camera Obscura) is a special-type of camera with special abilities that can kill any type of ghosts throughout the game, but only if you have film in your cam to do so. Throughout the game, you'll come across all kinds of ghosts that you can take a shot at with your cam. They come in different forms like hidden ghosts, wandering ghosts and boss battles amongst others, but before you can take a shot, the cam needs to charge up first before you can take one. You'll be rewarded with ''Spirit Points'' after every ghost defeated and these can help you by upgrading your cam to be more powerful and more effective against the scary nasties. It's not all about snapping ghosts and hope it'll be all over. There are puzzles to do and some ghosts will need snapping to progress through the game. They can damage you as well, if you are not careful. The game is fun, but there is some difficutly and minor problems. Miku (for starters) runs kinda slow, but that's the way the game is. The boss battles can be a pain at times and you can also easily miss ghosts that are just wandering around or if they are hidden - requiring you get them on your next playthrough. You'll be confused of where to go sometimes, but you do sometimes - and the puzzles can be annoying if you don't have a clue what you are doing, so you might spend like an hour on a puzzle until you solve it.Despite all that, the game is great. The haunted atmosphere that goes really well with the scary music will leave you wondering what could be around the next corner, or through a door. There a scary surprises around every corner that will make you poo your pants everytime because you don't know what to expect. The ghosts are so realistic, they are unbelieveably scary. If you don't like getting scared, then I suggest you stay away from this game. If you are a brave person, then this game is for you.

Brief Description:Project Zero (also known as Zero Rei(Japan) and Fatel Frame(america) is a survival horror game. You play Miku, a young girl with the power to see vision's and see ghosts. She comes to the Himuro mansion in search of her elder brother Mayfuyu, who two weeks ago came to this mansion in search of a famous novelist Junsei Takamine (who went for material to write his next novel). My thoughts on the game:The game I feel is scarier than that of Silent Hill and Resident Evil, I've played both games and felt that, though they were scary, they didn't have that spark. The game, although doesn't look amazingly scary when you start actually starts to pick into your brain.Only having a camera to protect you might put you off this game, but I felt it actually enchanced the fear, I mean.. jesus you only have a CAMERA!You slowly find out about the ritual's the Himuro family followed and it get's sicker and more twisted as you play through the game.Begginer gamers might find this title a little challenging, the puzzel's are difficult if you don't find all the clues and the battle system sometimes take's a little to get used to. The this that pleased me most, is when you complete the game and have the choice to restart it (with all the camera bonus's and items you picked up) different events happen. Ie. When you play on the first time you walk past a candle in the first room and nothing happens. When you reply you walk past the candle and it flares up, frightening Miku, and me!!People who get freaked out by scarry things easily might best leave this title be, it's very violent, very graphic and very scary! When I brought it, the guy at the counter actually pre-warned me about the game. I've never been pre-warned about Silent Hill or Resident Evil ever!!The soundtrack compliments the game totally, the there is a "dirty" layer over the gameplay to get a tarnished feel. I reccomend this game to anyone who think's they need a challange and a scare. The second release of this game "Project Zero2:crimson butterfly" is out this 2004

A young woman enters a hanunted mission in search of her missing brother armed with an antique camera with the power to capture spirits...Releases as Fatal Frame in Japan and the States, Project Zero deserves to be more popular than it is likely to be. Unlikely to appeal to everyone, with it's slow build up and lack of action, this is not a game that deserves to be portrayed as a gimmicky Resident Evil or Silent Hill clone.Once you get used to what at first appears to be a fiddly control system, it's easy to get sucked into the incredibly creepy atmosphere generated by the graphics and well-used sound effects. An intriguing storyline that sucks you in little by little puts most horror movies to shame, and at times is somewhat reminiscent of the Japanese horror movie Ring. Whoever signed up the rights to turn this into a film could have a little gem on their hands. As ever things are not all good. The collision detection is not the best seen on the PS2 and, as mentioned earlier, the controls can be a little fiddly at times (though there are numerous configurations to choose from). The biggest problem, however, is the length of the game; it is likely to only take around six or seven hours to complete it the first time, including time spent getting the hang of things. Replayability comes in the form of further upgrades to the camera, a costume change, unlocking a harder difficulty level and an additional battle mode, but most of the fun is to be had in following the story. Of course, completists will play numerous times in order to take snaps of every single ghost that pops up during the walk through the mansion...Those prepared to overlook these small quibbles and give the game a chance will be in for a treat. I dare anyone to play this game at night on their own, in the dark, with the sound turned up for long.Without doubt, Project Zero rates as the creepiest game I have come across so far, and for that alone I would have no qualms about recommending it to anyone that enjoys the survival horror genre.

Project Zero is, from the outset, a wonderfully realised videogame. Starting off in dreary black and white, you play as the main character's brother, on an initial trip to a deserted mansion. Obviously, Resident Evil springs to mind, but the comparisons should really end there. You could be forgiven for expecting the entire game to take place in black and white, as it looks positively stunning - but when Miku appears, you are transported to luscious colour, and the game just gets better from there.Individual moments of the game succeed in tying together the past and the present (such as seeing the ghost of your brother, walking the footsteps you walked him in minutes earlier...),and this keeps the plot alive - the experience is never a lonely or boring one.A useful 'correlation' screen keeps you in check with the ins and outs of the various characters you meet or are searching for, and this aids the progression of the plot markedly. The sound effects are sublime -without sounding geeky, the 'ting' when the white kimono girl appears is fantastically executed - and the effect of the sound and graphics combines to make a brilliantly spooky affair - this is a game definately meant to be played in the dark.It is not without problems, though. The control system is awkward at first, and Miku is not always fully responsive. The camera system is, contrary to popular belief, not difficult at all. If pressing O then X is hard for some people, then maybe they should put down their controllers right now.The voice acting is, at time, lamentable - the audio tapes that would provide pleasingly atmospheric plot clues are spoken in a catatonic tone that suggests a man reading from a script, poorly.Other than that, Project Zero is a wonderful experience, and worth every penny.

Basically, you're a young girl who is going in search of her brother who disappeared after visiting an old mansion. Sounds like a typical scenario but give it a try.If you've ever watched The Ring or Audition, you can appreciate that Japanese Horror can be very scary and very twisted. This game is no exception. The atmosphere very much reminds me of Silent Hill, where theres a lot of tension and you're too afraid of whats round the corner. The twist with this game is though, unlike most games where you have a gun or some other form of weaponry, you are armed with a camera. Now at this point you're probably thinking 'A camera? Sounds like a kids game to me.' Well it isn't.It wasn't made an 18 ELSPA rating for nothing. You have to take pictures of the ghosts for them to disappear. Sounds a bit strange but it really works. The idea is that you can only really see the ghosts when looking through the camera which is great, especially when you do know where one is and it suddenly pops out in front of you!! The graphics mimic those in Silent Hill with the grainy effect and its very dark (you've only got a torch). Yhe musical score is great too, adding to the chilling atmosphere and there are some well timed gaps in the soundtrack too which blankets the mansion in silence, and all you can hear is the sound of your own heartbeat. The save system is pretty much standard. You have to find a save point, you can't just save anywhere. The only problem is that it takes ages to save. The controls are very easy to use aswell. I don't generally look at the instructions to find out how to play a game, I usually just learn when playing the game and with Project Zero, I picked it up very very quickly.Go on, give it a try..........

If you're familiar with Japanese horror movies such as The Ring, The Grudge or the Slit-Mouth Woman, this is a game that would fall into a similar category. As a Haunted-House style survival horror game, you are Miku, a high school student in search for her brother, who went missing 2 weeks before the game's events. Unlike your Resident Evils and Silent Hills, Miku's only weapon is an old film camera, that captures ghosts. Doesn't sound too bad, right? Forget Boos from the Super Mario games and Casper The Friendly Ghost, these ghosts are out for blood! All of them tortured or mutilated in some way, they seek rest, and are very, very angry! I bought this game recently, and it's 10 years old now.The graphics are still very nice with animation moving fluidly and excellent use of lighting. The music and sound effects however, are timeless, it doesn't matter how old this game can get, the music remains absolutely terrifying. If you listen to it with headphones and the lights out, see how long it takes before you begin to feel scared. It's full of seemingly unpredictable jump scares, times when you get too scared to continue without running all the way back to save your game, and an RPG element, in which every photo you take of ghosts earns you points to upgrade your uh...weapon (camera), and the better the photo, the more points you get. Every time I play it, I keep needing to remind myself "It's just a game." It also has a great story to it and good replayability (if you dare).

I saw a review of this game on television, which included several in-game views, and knew right away that this was a game that I was just gonna have to play.It looked dark and brooding, something to subtly play on the mind whilst you're trying to solve the next piece of the puzzle. It is just that. The use of sound effects, and the sound track all add to the experience. They are perfectly integrated into the game that it took a while for me to notice it, and how well done it was.As others have mentioned in their reviews, the fact that you're a teenage girl armed only with a camera that has the ability to capture spirits is what makes this game stand out from a pretty crowded selection of rpg's currently available for the PS2.The control system was initially a little fiddly, but after an hour I didn't notice this any more. Just as well, as I still find it hard not to panic when I encounter a nasty spirit. The story is well thought out and put together, without being overly complicated. It still requires some thought, which makes this a game that I find I need to sit down to for an hour or more, rather than one that can be used to have a quick rattle. It's well structured, and you'll have a pretty good idea of what you need to do very quickly after starting the game.If you feel the need to combat dark mysterious forces in the universe, and you're tired of rocket launchers and plasma cannons, this may just be worth trying out.

My mate bought this game, last night (in the daylight) we sat down to play - well i watched. We found out that it was an 18 and that it even had a warning on the back, we thought whatever like the americans would say. We also heard about this camera view, we were a little apprehensive as we had no guns.Within 10 minutes we were feeling a little bit chilly after 30 mins we were absolutly pi**ing ourselves, we could not believe how this game was making us react like this. The graphics, the camera angles, the genre of the game all amazingly done, we kept talking how a lot of thought went into this game, well we were when we weren't hiding behind the pillow (and yes we were). It would do amazing cut scenes like a ghost watching from above and your still controlling, amazing. But its the inscare jumps that does it, you proceed to open the usual creaky door, the camera ever so slightly follows in and then bang! a ghost right in front of you - these ghosts are so realistic however i dont know how ghost looks in real life. After an hour we had to put it down and put the game in a drawer under some socks, hoping the ghosts would not come out of it. If you are wanting a compltly different type of game then this is it. If you want to be scared out of your skin then this is for you. Remember the 18+ and the warning - christ sake listern to it.Brillaint stuffThough bloody scary

This simply has to be one of the most original games for the PS2 yet, armed with only a mystical camera, the heroine of the game,Miku has to unravel the mysterious disappearance of her brother, who in turn went to look for a missing research team holed up in a derelict mansion. The combat system is unique - to fight the ghosts Miku has to capture their image on film, sapping the spirits power, this is a refreshing change from charging through haunted towns and mansions armed with chainsaws, grenade launchers etc. The graphics, although not on a par with Silent Hill have to be seen to be believed, starting off in grainy black and white the game soon evolves into bringing muted colour to the action. The game shocks you with all manners of ghosts popping up unexpectedly with their unearthly screams and moans, and your only means of defending yourself is the before mentioned camera. The camera starts off with no extra features but through a combat points system the camera can be upgraded with features such as zoom lens, freeze frame etc.The replay factor of the game is extended through the battle mode, nightmare mode and chapter selection mode, these all offer a different variant on the main game. Overall, this game is the best survival horror to date and is unlikely to be surpassed for a very long time.BUY IT NOW!!!(and dont forget to knock the lights off!!)

Have you finished Resident Evil or Silent Hill and are looking for your next challange? Or just looking for an eerie game in general? Then STEER CLEAR of this game as it is more than a scary adventure - it is hours and hours of heart-thumping, nerve-shredding terror! And I loved it!Briefly, you play a young Japanese girl who is searching for her missing brother in an old, haunted mansion. She is equipped with an antique camera which has the ability to trap spirits once a picture is taken and, therefore, 'kill' ghosts and suchlike. So you find yourself exploring this frightening place, filled with dark corners, sudden cut-scenes (and I mean SUDDEN!) and a well-developing storyline which keeps you playing, even though your nerves are telling you to stop!Camera-work and controls are similar to Res Evil, albeit slightly easier to use. The sounds are fantastic, with frightening music/chants/moans in the background. The graphics are good, and the game will certainly keep you busy with its balance of puzzles - some of them simply fetch and bring, some of them more taxing, but nothing too difficult. All this sounds well and good...until you have an encounter... I can't put the terror into words so I'll let you see for yourself!Overall an excellent game, and I was glad to complete it!

Aah, Project Zero. This game started my entire fascination with Japan and japanese style and culture.Bought it when I was 15 years old, I think. Had a few cash left that I wanted to use on a new game, but I wasn't sure which one I wanted. I had seen this game on the store shelf a lot of times, but it didn't really look like my kind of game. Saw it again that same day and thought "screw it, the girl on the cover is kinda cute, ill take it". I am very glad I did, because this game ended up being my favorite horror game of all time. I even like it better than Silent Hill and Resident Evil.I am not normally a guy that get scared easily, nor was I when I was 15. However, this game made me play in a constant feeling of dread and I was genuinly scared to carry on. The ghosts are very well done and pretty damn scary. I still hope today with a burning passion, that this game will come out on european psn and xbox live along with PZ; 2, 3 and 4. And ofc that we will also get a 5th installment, even though I know that that hope is pretty far fetched.Anyway, im on the 5 star wagon here. This game deserves more praise than anything else on the market, regarding horror.

Having started to play this game,I noticed the astonishing work of art that it is. First of all, even at the beginning, the scenery was swimming in magnificently spooky atmosphere. For a game made in 2002, the level of detail of everything from the scenery to the characters, was fantastic. It has an extremely interesting and captivating plot, and makes you want to proceed further into the game eager for more. I have watched a lot of what are known to be 'the scariest movies ever made'. They arent. I am no wuss for horror. However, this game actually scared me. Not just creeped me out. Actually scared me. The reason it did so, was the rich atmosphere that was oozing out of it and the classic boo scares taken to a completely different level.I did not know what would happen next, or when it would happen. Then, I got to a seemingly innocent point, then suddenly, a wrinkly, deformed blue face popped out as I used the only weapon in the game, the Camera. From then on, my heart races, and I squirm due to thinking about what could be around the corner. As I get further and further, I expect to enjoy it more and more. Right now.... it's a solid 10!

Those that suffer from a nervous disposition should not purchase this game (as is stated in red on the cover of the box).If you are a fan of Japanese horrors like the 'Ring' trilogy and 'Audition' this would be the perfect game for you. Project Zero is a psycological horror game that will leave you tingling from head to toe. The soundtrack and storyline is chilling which leaves even the hardiest of gamers needing to watch something light-hearted before they turn in. This game is a step closer to true horror than seen before with games like 'Resident Evil' and 'Silent Hill'.I will leave you with one tip: If you can afford it, i really suggest you purchase a surround sound system that is compatible with the PS2,turn off all the lights and turn the volume up to maximum to experience the full potential of this title.

One of the most comforting things about the Resident Evil series is that you have the weaponry to blast those zombies to hell. What makes Project Zero so special is that you dont have this luxury: your'e an innocent girl out to find her brother, armed with a camera. Knowing you dont have anything else but that is scary enough, but the grainy effect, muck like Silent Hill 2, and the sinister sound and camera angles add to a truly terrifying experience. Dont get me wrong: I love this game! It scares me more than others do, which is why I love it. If you need a better scare than you feel you're getting out of some modern horror films & games, buy this game: a good old-fashioned scare is precisely what this game delivers.Top stuff!

I've actually never played a game quite like this one, come to think of it this is my very first horror game. Well at least my first proper horror game. I must say it really is a terrifying game! At one point I was too afraid to go any further! The best time to play it would be in the cover of darkness to feel it's full effects. Even if you were to play during daylight hours, you're bound to jump several times within the first 15-20mins of playing. Truly a gem in the horror genre, one I recommend to all horror fans. Gameplay itself is pretty unique in that you only have a camera as a weapon, the sound effects couldn't have been better and the story played out well as you progress and delvedeeper into the game.
