This review is from: Pokémon Y (Nintendo 3DS) (Video Game)Pokemon X and Y are pokemon games that will capture a new generation of fans , while bringing smiles to veterens of the franchise too.The much awaited transition from pixeled sprites to polygon character models is most appreciated in this game.Fans will love to see their favourite pokemon animated in glorius cel shaded 3d models.Alot of care has been put into animating the pokemon , bringing out their personalities and charms/appeal , both during battle and mini games/ petting time.I do wish the battle animations were a bit more varied at times , but I guess with over 600 pokemon to animate and hundreds of moves/attacks to animate ,I guess I can somewhat forgive, the usual place holder short cut animations they apply in this franchise to use across many characters. The enviroments seem a lot more exciting too , along with wonderful accompanying music which makes the exploration that more immersing. Although some sudden camera angles will have you running around in circles sometimes , thankfully this does not happen too often. There are a lot of invisible walls though in most enviroments , so you of course can't walk where ever you want. This is probably one of the easiest pokemon games to date however , certain decisions like the Experience share all , makes it easy for just anyone to steamroll through the whole game with their starter , while the rest of their team levels up alongside it effortlessly.Kind of takes away alot of the grinding in the game, which I think has always been part of the franchise. Although in a way not everyone has spare hours to throw away to level up their pokemon , so this feature is good for busy people. The new feature "Pokemon Amie" is a great addition for those who love pet simulators like Nintendo dogs. I'm sure kids will love the opportunity to pet and feed their pokemon and playing mini games with them too. Treating your pokemon well will have bring extra benefits in their performance on the battle field too.You can also have the pokemon interact with your facial expressions via the one of the 3DS cameras. ( Although the facial recognition is another story )I can tell alot of the budget went into the attention to detail of each pokemon's animations and mannerisms.Additional stats training for pokemon is also made easier and more accessible this generation , with the new " Super training " feature. If additional pokemon battles to level up your stats are too monotonous/tedious for some players, they can have their pokemon partake in punching bag and some kind of weird pseudo-soccer simulation to gain extra stat points instead.Although whether Pokemon Amie and Super training become tedious in themselves , decides on the player. But I'm sure most fans will at least find some short term amusement interacting with hundreds of pokemon via petting/feeding.Online functionality is streamlined rather nicely in this version of the game. You can connect online during any point in the adventure. So that means trading and online battles whenever you like.Everything seemed to work alot more smoothly in comparison when I tried going online in Pokemon Black and White.Amongst the many additons to the online capabilities , Wonder Trade is by far my favourite addition. Random trading can be a lottery of fun, anticipation and disappointment. Also other players can be rather generous and reasonable on the GTS ( Global Trade service ) too , as my experience, just as long as you're not too greedy in your demands. The social aspect of pokemon through it's trading , is what separates pokemon from other J-RPGs and never has it been so easy immerse yourself in trading than in this title.Another aspect that makes this game even more easier than ever , is O-powers. Which could be seen as RPG spells , that grant you buffs/boosts for short periods. You can use this on yourself or on other players who are online , further encouraging more online interactions with other players. And of course another flashy aspect that will change the ways battles are played ( and how new pokemon are designed ... old ones given new life/interest )is the introduction of Mega Evolution. Yet another aspect of making this toddler level of difficulty game , even easier ... well for the single player part anyway.I'm sure mega evolution means great changes and upsets for the existing multiplayer metagame, but I don't indulge myself in that aspect much unfortunately. All in all I having a great amount of fun with this title every time I pop it in the 3DS.It is quite an addictive time eater , especially if you go at your own pace and interact with other players. The implementation of Pokemon Amie, Super Training and online functionality can be all available and activated at any point in your adventure , greatly streamlines the enjoyment and accessibility of the experience. As it pretty much lets you chose what you want to do whenever you want. As you can easily take a break from the story/quest whenever you want , to enjoy other aspects of the game. ( instead of having to trek to certain locations in the game just to activate these features instead )My main complaint is that it's just too easy at times .... but then again , I suppose you need to consider the core audience it aims at.But although it's a kids RPG , adults whose inner child still hasn't died , will be having plenty of fun here.Pokemon has certainly taken a very big turn in the franchise in terms of presentation and accessibility. I look forward to future games in the franchise to see if they can develope the franchise to greater heights.Although this could just be the final peak of popularity, lets get the pokedex up to 1000 before putting things to rest shall we ?This is easily my game of the year, for breathing long overdue exhilarating new life into a franchise that needed it. Although the core game is still quite samey and in some cases and simplified. Sometimes presentation goes along way. This is the pokemon game I've been waiting for , for a long time...

I remember when I was young, I eagerly awaited opening up a certain Christmas present under the tree. It was a Game Boy game, one based on a TV series I had become somewhat intrigued by. That game was called Pokémon Blue Version, and it is still probably my favourite game of all time. It cemented my love of this world where you catch and train wonderful monsters, and it was my first introduction in to the in-depth world of Role Playing Games. Now, around fifteen years later, that same series of games is still going strong, and this time in the form of Pokémon X & Y! I may be older now, but this new incarnation of the franchise simply reinforces my continuing love of the Pokémon world! The first thing you notice about these new games are the changes to the graphics and presentation, which have had a big and major make over. When once your Pokémon were a bunch of twitching spirits, your faithful companions are now fully animated models which breathe, blink, move and fight in glorious 3D motion. The environments and your playable character have also been given a new makeover. You can now customize certain elements of your enhanced character, such as their skin colour, hair and clothes. It is a well needed change, and the results are wonderful. The grass now flows and the water ripples. Some make be distraught at the fact that the game is only 3D during battles and selected areas (Such as caves or gyms) but it doesn’t take away the beauty of the game. While aesthetically the game has had an almost complete transformation, the core gameplay and narrative of the series remains the same. You start off as an inexperience youngster new to the region of Kalos, a world inspired by France. You are soon given your first Pokémon, and set off on an adventure to defeat the eight Gym leaders across the region, the Elite Four, the Champion and along the way, an evil organisation bent on their own wicked goals. With Pokémon X & Y, there is a feel that this generation is both a glimpse at the future of the series, and a tribute to the past. Most areas of tall grass (Yep, that is still here!) hold Pokémon of mixed Generations, as well as the new native Pokémon. In fact Santalune Forest, one of the first areas you explore, holds a VERY similar in layout to Viridian Forest, and like that place, it holds Pokémon such as Weedle, Caterpie, Metapod and even Pikachu! (Who is unique in the game because it is voice by Ikue Ōtani, rather than a growl like all the others). Not only that, but soon after you receive a second starter Pokemon, in which you can chose Bulbasaur, Squirtle or Charmander!Battles are played out in almost the exact same way as before, but Pokémon X & Y add a new twist to the gameplay with Mega Evolutions. Basically, a select number of Pokémon (All from past Generations, another tribute to the past) can be given an item to hold and then, in the heat of battle, you can choose to ‘evolve’ said Pokémon there and then. This is not a permanent evolution though. Instead, the Pokémon stays like this for the rest of the battle, and then ‘de-evolves’ at the end of the fight. The strengths, advantage and falls of this feature differ from Pokémon to Pokémon. Some are given a new type (Such as Mega Charizard X, who becomes a Fire/Dragon Pokémon) or new abilities. It is an interesting feature that strategist will probably love, but it is not a necessary aspect of the game. You can have a strong team, and never use Mega Evolution even once. It is simply an extra way to ‘buff up’ your team, if you wish for such a strategy. Even in the games story, Mega Evolutions quickly take a back seat after some time.Pokémon has never had an amazing, well-written story. They have been alright and charming, but are usually one of the least defined aspects of the games. Progressively however, each game has taken a step forward in making their stories better and bigger (White/Black 2 has been my favourite so far) and while the central story in Pokémon X & Y is good and enjoyable, it seems to have taken a bit of a step backwards in some ways. Team Flare, the horribly dressed new enemy organisation, are interesting but with the exception of their leader, are more or less completely played for farce. The interlocking side-story, which involves the act of a King who lived 3,000 years ago however is very interesting and has a wonderful pay off at the end of the game. It is simple, yet emotional, which is a perfect mix for a game played by all ages. It is just a shame that Team Flare and their plan takes up much of the motion of the story.Like the past games, beating the Champion does not end the game. There are still hundreds of Pokémon to catch (Not sure how many are available in this game without trading for Gen V, but officially there are over 700 Pokémon!) and various other activates to pursue, even if the endgame experience is not at the same level as some of the past Pokémon games (Don’t expect a new continent or many new zones to explore…) There is however the Battle Mansion, Kalos’s version of the Battle Tower, Subway etc, legendary Pokémon to catch, an extra story-based quest, daily activates and trading/battling online. The safari zone has also returned in the form of the Friend Safari. It’s an interesting twist in which each of your registered 3DS friends is given a type, and three Pokémon of said element which you can catch. It’s a nice feature, but one that could be a little restrictive if you don’t have/want many registered friends.Pokemon X & Y is a big step forward for the franchise, and while it may fall short in a few areas, it is an impressive entry in the series. Moreover, it is a very good sign for the future of Pokemon. With this impressive ground work, I am really looking forward to what the next games in the series are going to be like. Long live the world of Pokémon, and don’t forget to catch them all!

I've been a lifelong fan of the Pokémon franchise - received Blue for my then-new Gameboy Color in 1998 and have played every generation since. However, Generation V (Black/White and Black/White 2) really turned me off the franchise with their bland new Pokémon, boring region and cut-and-paste story-line, so I have to admit I approached X/Y with some trepidation. I needn't have worried. X/Y, with their Kalos region, new Fairy type and line-up of furry critters raring to go is absolutely fantastic. I've spent a while wondering how to leave a review for it, and I think the best way is to highlight the ten things I enjoy the most about the game. Here goes:1) The graphic engine is stunning, and rather than just being a hardware demo for the 3DS's graphic chip, it fits in with the feel of the game. Kalos, based on real-life France, is a region that focuses on beauty both spiritual and physical, and the design of the overworld fits right in. In many of the places I was running around and looking at how lovely and well-designed everything was.2) The battle sequences are, likewise, stunning. The camera angles are constantly changing, showing all sides of the battlefield, each Pokémon sprite is rendered fully 3D for the first time on a handheld, meaning that every Pokémon from the past five generations is a new revelation when you run into them again.3) Rather than having a One Rival, One True Rival system that's been in place since Generation III, you are now surrounded by a group of kids of differing personalities. This makes the job that you're running for Professor Sycamore feel more important; rather than just being handed a Pokédex and being told tally-ho, your quest fits directly with the game's developing story.4) Each town is different. Rather than just being 'town with purple roofs' or 'town with the big statue', every own is set geographically apart from the others. This makes them far more memorable, and a lot of them don't even have Gyms - making exploration a more key factor in the gameplay.5) For the first time ever, you can customise your trainer sprite. You can change hats, hair styles, clothing and bags, and for the first time ever as well you can play as a black trainer - something that is well overdue. This isn't all available right away; you're given a bog-standard trainer sprite of differing ethnicity and gender at the start, and as each town goes by you'll discover different clothes shops and salons. Foufrou, a new Normal-type Poodle-like Pokémon, can also be styled in different ways.6) Speaking of Foufrou, the new Pokémon introduced in Generation VI are, for the most part, a solid bunch. Generation V really went all over the place and didn't have a focused style (an ice cream? Really?) but Generation VI has clearly thought about France's culture and animals, and introduced a whole range of varied and interesting 'mons. You'll also find that some existing ones have been upgraded to part-Fairy type.7) The music. As mentioned above, it is gorgeous. In some places I have plonked my trainer down somewhere and turned the volume up just so I can listen to it.8) The online element. As long as you have a wi-fi connection, you can trade, battle, and swap O-Powers (timed perks) to your 3DS friends so long as you're both playing the game online at the same time. And rather than having to haul yourself to the nearest Pokémon Center and interrupt your game to do so, you can simply do it at any time from the bottom touch-screen. You can also voice-chat in the same way.9) Likewise, you can also 'Wonder Trade' at any time from the bottom touch screen. If you've caught a Pokémon you don't want, you can blind trade it with anyone in the world, selected randomly, for a mysterious swap.10) And finally, callbacks to the old games: the upgraded Exp Share is appreciated, there are loads of narrative similarities without it being a rehash (Snorlax on a bridge! The memories!), NPCs will mention other regions with careless abandon, and, one of my personal favourite changes - the cries have been upgraded. Raichu no longer sounds like your Gameboy's sound card has crashed, but more like a living, breathing creature.I could go on, but I don't want to spoil anything and you really need to experience X/Y without knowing as much as possible. It's a great game for old fans who were wishing for a franchise change, and also for welcoming new fans to the fold - without the tutorial sections being dull or repetitive as they have been in the past. I'm currently 16 hours in and still have two badges to get and the main story-line to solve (yet alone filling up my Pokédex), so for £32 - £40 the game is an absolute steal.Highly recommended.

First off I would like to confess that I haven't played ever pokemon game since their origin(initial) game but I must say for a game that is aimed mostly for children and has been around for quiet some time it really has a strong aura off of it which brightens my day every time I play it. I usually don't write reviews but I must say I had to make an exception for this game because of its beauty and creativeness. The game mechanics and objective is the same in this game as in any other pokemon game. You control a main character in which you must guide around the region of Kalos raising new and familiar pokemon from both this generation of pokemon and ones previous. This game however gives the player a refreshing and authentic start to the game by having to choose a pokemon which is either fire, water or grass type as seen in earlier pokemon games. I must say that gamefreak did a great job in not only animating each and every pokemon in the game but also by creating 3d models of the pokemon which really bring them to life. The graphical improvements in this game really help to immerse the player into the story of the game and also helps you to understand and connect with your pokemon more. In previous pokemon games I found myself raising only one or two of my favourite pokemon and I would neglect my other pokemon because of the time it would take to build up their experience also. However in this game you can turn on a exp share option which allows your pokemon to gain exp in battle without partaking in that battle. I found myself using all kinds of different strategies in battle because it only took the fraction of my time to power up new pokemon than it did in previous generations of the game.Another feature of this game I really like is the online features. It is now so much easier to trade with trainers around the world in virtually seconds. Pokémon which need to be traded to evolve eg haunter, used to be very difficult for me to evolve because I could never find a trainer to trade with but now it is so much easier. Also you can partake in live 3d battles online with anyone at any time through the online features which in my opinion is very slick. Overall the online features in this game set a very good base in which gamefreak can build on in the next pokemon game and I have a feeling it is going to be bigger and better than ever especially with the introduction of pokemon bank which allows you to send pokemon from pokemon white or black to pokemon x/y so that you can see their 3d sprites and enjoy battling with them all over again. The actual story in this game might not live up to expectations especially after pokemon black and white 2 which had a breath taking story from start to end. However bearing in mind that game freak spent a lot of time creating a new region and new pokemon I think this can be overlooked slightly. I mean, you couldn't say the story is terrible and in fact I found it even quite fascinating. During the story you get to witness a short cut-scene which describes a certain character within the game. The cut-scene has some beautiful music playing in the background and the visuals are all in 3d which offer an almost cinema like effect. I found that this part of the story was most intriguing as I never saw gamefreak do this before in a pokemon game. I think it opens new opportunities that they can incorporate into the next pokemon game. Overall I would say the story is entertaining enough to keep you hooked but I would not rate it as gamefreak's finest work of art.In reality the pokemon concept never changes and that is what I find so eccentric about this game. I mean I have played quite a number of pokemon games and they all involve defeating 8 gym leaders followed by the pokemon elite 4 and league champion so what is it that makes this game different? Why should we pay for a game that we have played over and over but only in a different region? The answer lies in ourselves. We are pokemon fans. We strive to journey throughout a region. We train our pokemon so that we can win in battle. We travel to faraway places, to mountain peaks, to ocean cave depths, to just about anywhere because we all share a distinct characteristic. We love to travel and we love to battle. Pokémon X/Y simply helps us to unite with new pokemon and to once again journey around a region thirsting to unlock its every secret. You should buy Pokémon X/Y because it is the reason we play video games and play pokemon, to enjoy the thrill and fun of journeying a region with friends and of course your beloved pokemon.

I've played for about 25 hours so far and feel like now's a pretty good time to leave my review.Pokémon X is one of the first games in the 6th generation of the series, adding around 70 new Pokémon as well as some mega-evolutions to old favourites. The presentation, first off, is stunning. As someone who has played the previous games extensively the shift to 3d models over sprites is a welcome change, the models and animations all look excellent and the music is better than ever with the higher capacity of the 3ds cartridge. The 3d effect is unavailable in the overworld, an odd choice that I don't understand but that's what it is. In battle however, it adds some nice depth as you'd expect from the 3ds but is nothing special. You're not missing out playing it on the 2ds. I have even noticed some minor frame rate drops when using 3d in larger battles but it was still playable. So all in all, the 3d effect is not a selling point of the game (as you probably would expect) but this does not detract from the presentation at all.Gameplay wise, I'm comfortable in saying gamefreak did very well. From large changes like the addition of a new type (Fairy) which balances the game and will significantly change the teams in player-vs-player, to small changes like setting hidden power to a constant 60 base power making it far more useful in the main game and (hopefully) less common in competitive battles. All the changes seem very well thought out from a balance and fun perspective and allow for a very wide variety of pokémon to use through the main story. The new pokémon themselves are, in my opinion, some of the best designs in the series. I've found almost no designs I disliked and the smaller number of new Pokémon seems to have allowed for more interesting additions. My only issue with the main game is that it's slightly too easy, but this is coming from someone used to playing black2 on challenge mode and with a lot of experience, so take it with a pinch of salt.Pokémon-Amie is a nice touch, with some surprisingly fun minigames but doesn't seem to affect very much. A far more interesting minigame addition is super training. Super training is a minigame where you have to dodge balls being shot towards you and shoot balls into the opposing goals. It can be quite fun and has the effect of raising your Pokémon's stats slightly (for those in the know, it's EV training). It gives you a clear indication of how much the stats can be improved and is a very nice addition making the competitive metagame a lot more accessible for new players. Probably wont be used by those already EV training as it seems slower, but time will tell. Then we get to the elephant in the room, Mega-Evolution. Some old favourites (maybe a couple of dozen Pokémon? not sure how many yet) have gained new forms in mega evolution. Unlike the normal evolutions, these are temporary transformations that you can choose to activate in battle and end once the battle is over. They confer new forms, new abilities, better stats- generally improvements in all areas as far as I can tell. The downside being you can only have one mega evolution per team and they have to hold the appropriate item to mega-evolve, removing their capacity to hold other items. I have to say, I was not a big fan of the concept when it was first revealed but have found they fit the game very well. There's not much else to say on the matter except that Mega Blastoise is the best thing ever. There is currently no way to transfer Pokémon to this game from the previous generations. This may well be a deal breaker for some, but there is going to be a new 3ds app released in December that will allow you to store 3000 Pokémon online and transfer Pokémon from the recent DS games to the new generation. It will be a paid service with a free trial allowing you time to transfer from old games without paying, I will update this review when it is released with more information. So all in all, Pokémon X is an excellent step forward in the series, good for new fans and old ones alike. It is already my favourite 3ds game and I will be playing it for months to come.Gotta catch 'em all, y'know?EDIT: As of 25/10/2013 The 1.1 Patch has been released on the eShop. It fixes the save hang glitch that broke many players game saves. If you get stuck saving in Lumiose city, make sure to grab the patch!

I choose 4 stars because the game is somewhat easier than past ones and because the Fairy type Pokemon greatly irritate me.The Fairy types aren't as balanced as they should be, they are immune to one of the strongest types in the game and only weak to Steel and Poison, of which there are only 37 and 61 Pokemon of respectively, which is including dual types and every individual Pokemon in an evolutionary line except the Mega-Evolution of which there are only 14 and 15 damaging attacks for those types respectively and 6 and 3 of these have lower than 100% accuracy respectively. While most of the 100% accuracy steel moves are only learnable by a small quantity of Pokemon or have power that VARIES.Poison type attack moves aren't that much better with most only being learnable by a small quantity of Pokemon. So its weakness is two of the least common types which have the least common quantity of damaging moves. I also don't feel their special defence has been calibrated properly because fighting a 100% Fairy type can take more moves that should be at 1x than it does to take down a 100% of a different type even when your Pokemon is a high enough level to wipe out both equally.Levelling up in the game is quite a bit easier - Exp. Share shares experience with all Pokemon in the team now allowing easy levelling where you only need to fight with one Pokemon, which allows you to level up and evolve batches of Pokemon if you wish. Catching Pokemon also gives you experience as well which is a nice touch and more realistic. These make it easier than previous games but I feel that will be adjusted in the next generation. The graphics are also quite good as well and for the first time, 3D.I also love the hoards (fighting 5 Pokemon at once) - kinda wish there were hoards for every Pokemon though as it makes it easier to find shinies when you are facing 5 Pokemon at a time though I also want a way to zoom through all of their attacks because it takes a while to win when you have to wait through all of their attacks.I also love the Friend Safaris, though I wish it was easier to add people as friends, more were able to be added, and there were more Pokemon available in the Safaris.Over all, I enjoyed the game though and I love how adorable some of the Pokemon are in Pokemon Amie - I would recommend it for any Pokemon fan.

I'll start off by saying I've played every single pokemon game and I have played them since they first came out. With pokemon black and white being my least favourites I was really hoping this game would reignite my love for the franchise. It did just that.Firstly I'd like to say the 3D was just right for me. I know its an issue some people have complained about but for me it has just the right amount. It's in all the major bits like evolutions, gym battles and of course the meeting with the legendary pokemon. I personally don't like the games where there is constant use of the 3D I feel to have to turn it off to rest my eyes more.Secondly the little details like being able to move in all directions and personalising your character make a big difference in a game like this. These little touches make the game feel like your pokemon x will be completely to your friends! I also like that they've added the GTS to main menu so you can access it from anywhere. They've also added a feature called wonder trade where you select a pokemon and trade for a completely random pokemon which is always a nice surprise.Thirdly this is the first storyline for a while that I've really enjoyed and I really loved the villains. I feel like I spent a lot of time playing the main story so I was really pleased and felt like I'd got my money's worth. There's also loads to do after you've finished the game as well to keep you going. Finally I've come to the one and only con about the game which is also the reason why it has 4 stars and not 5. I was really disappointed to find that you can't complete the national pokedex as of yet. I completed the regional one thinking something would be unlocked that would allow all these 2nd & 3rd gen pokemon I hadn't seen yet to appear. Unfortunately this wasn't the case and instead I read up that we have to wait until December for the pokemon bank to come out which we also have to pay for. Luckily there's a free trial for a month so if you're quick enough and spend a lot of time on it you should be able to complete the pokedex.Overall for anyone who's sitting on the fence I'd say buy it as it will give you hours of fun!

My impression of the game can be broken down into two features; the look and feel of the game, and the story and gameplay.Look and Feel:On it's own, I would give this aspect of the game 5 stars. They have completely renovated, the look of the game while still leaving a modest familiarity with the previous games. The 3D world makes you feel like you are playing a truly modern Pokémon game. The battles, while still very similar to the previous games, are beautifully done, with a diverse range of animations which make the moves really come to life. The Pokémon are no longer still images, but moving creatures, and with the 3D screen just look awesome. While not in the general open world,in caves and buildings the 3D effect is utilised to make the places come to life. What can't be ignored is how much more life like your character is. With customisable clothes, hair and skin colour, your character can become truly unique, and more importantly, they will really be yours. The movement is now no longer restricted to up, down, left right, but you can move in a much smoother way. Put it this way, you can now run around in circles, rather than just squares.Story and Gameplay:This is the lesser of the two features. unlike the previous game the story is very much ignorable. Sure you have to play through it, but the usual set up with bad guys to defeat is done poorly and so you don't really engage the story much. However there are some new features which are quite cool like super-training, where you play mini-games to EV train your Pokémon (improve their stats). The battles are also a lot more enjoyable. You won't be finding yourself habitually running away from wild Pokémon as the battles are a lot more exciting. The new Pokémon they've introduced are also quite poor. When you encounter a Pokémon which is based on a key ring, you have to question just how last minute their designs were done.Overall The game is an exciting step forward for Game Freak and now that they've modernised the Pokémon look, hopefully their next big title will prioritise the Story, because if they do I think the Pokémon Franchise has many years ahead of them!

This blows the earlier Pokemon games right out of the water!! I cannot bring myself to say just how awesome this game is. Nintendo and Game Freak have really outdone themselves on this one. The graphics are beautiful; it's Nintendo so pixels are not a priority but the overall charm and aesthetic feel of the game is superb. There are some stunning locations, such as the 3D cave with blue stalactites.Pikachu is available early on in the game as well as a Kanto starter of your choice. Pokemon Amie lets you build bonds with your Pokemon that help them dodge attacks, cure themselves of status conditions, and gain more experience. Super Training is something I don't play with too much,it's more for the serious gamers who care about EV's and things. But I did train my Vaporeon that way once and it's special attack at Lv. 100 went through the roof! And with Mega Evolutions (which can completely turn the tide of battles, both in game and online) the battle dynamics have been made more complex and more interesting. The online features are a blessing. No longer do you have to go into those silly portals in the Pokemon Centre every time you want to trade or battle someone- you can interact with everyone who's online. I also like the fact that you can now choose a darker skinned sprite, which feels more inclusive. The storyline is mediocre but let's be honest, the perks of a Pokemon game isn't really its plot. Possibly the only downside is the lack of post- game content. Once you defeat the League there's not much to be done except more battling, collecting Mega Stones, etc. It's not like the post game content of White 2, which was more satisfying. Lumiose City can also be a little hard to navigate, and I don't know if I'd count this as a negative but it's so easy to spend all your money on clothes!Overall, though, this is an excellent entry into Generation 6. It's clear that they've put more effort than ever before into making Pokemon feel new and exciting again, and it pays off.

For years now, Pokemon has been a case of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'.Very little changed from game to game apart from the region, some new Pokemon and characters. However, this game has moved to a new engine, and all Pokemon are now rendered in 3D rather than as sprites. This means that when you first switch it one, after almost 2 decades of little change, you are treated to some wonderful scenes that evokes nostalgia, and gave me the same giddy feeling I had all those years ago.Like all Pokemon's, the battle system is fantastic. The exploring feels solid, but not quite the best it's been. It sometimes feels a little too linear, even for a Pokemon game. However, seeing Lumiose City for the first time is stunning!Little features addded such as the skates are signs of improvement, meaning you don't have to hold down the B button all time.If you've played Pokemon, you know the drill. You either love it or hate it.Two of my biggest disappointments of the game are the story and the end game. Up until Black and White, the stories of Pokemon were always roughly the same. But Black and White had a story which was genuinely touching and thought provoking. This story has regressed back to the old style, which was a shame.Secondly, the end game is almost non existent. The game is relatively easy to complete, requiring no grinding (for better or worse) but it seems you are almost always stronger than the opponent. With it being so easy, I expected a hard end game, what you get is three pokemon to catch and a battle tower. This is some of the smallest end game Pokemon content and a huge disappointment.Despite all this, I still loved my time with the game! I enjoyed every minute I spent playing it, I just wish it lasted longer than the 40 hours it did (just me being greedy :p)

I'm writing a review as an excuse to tear myself away from this thing. It's frighteningly addictive. I've played it for 38 hours since I got it just 2 and a half days ago.I've been totally addicted to Pokemon since 1st generation (I collect all manner of poke-junk, especially Zukan figures, and have thrown thousands at the cards down the years). I was ALMOST of a mind not to get this generation, because it meant buying yet another DS (this time a 3DS XL) just to play it on.... but thankfully I did.I am seriously impressed with most of this. The main plus is the look of it. It looks just stunning, especially in 3D on an XL. Old pokemon literally come alive (Mr Mime is amazing!).The new pokemon are a mixed bag. Some great (the water starter 2nd evo), some truly awful (Binacle and that bunny with the fists on its ears). The game play is basically... erm.... "familiar". Same old story, just tweaked for the new generation. They always stick to it, every generation. But that's ok. Because it works. There are SO MANY pokemon available in this... I'm only on my 6th badge and I've already caught about 220 species? There are a few negatives, I have to admit. The game mechanics have been dumbed down, and the worst thing is the new GTS (global trade station) where you can seek or ask for ANYTHING (you don't have to have seen it.) In theory you could camp out once you find the day-care, breed starters and GTS trade your way to a complete pokedex. The game wasn't challenging enough... this makes it less so.I also don't like the endless "other" parts... the dressing up, dancing, mini-games, baking cup-cake, poodle-clipping silly nonsense that has become so vast and confusing... I steer clear of most of it.Ok, I need to grab a couple of hours before I'm up again to water my berry bushes...

I am an avid Pokemon fan and have been playing ever since the day of Pokemon blue and red, and so as you can guess I was most excited to hear that they were bringing out another Pokemon game! However, I'm afraid game freak have provided too much hype for this game and it is not all that it seems.I have to begin by saying bravo to the makers for improving the game plau quality a tonne making the game not only more interactive, but more personalised to make you feel like it is actually you in the game, and you're not just controlling a character as you watch him play through the game; it is YOUR game and it gives a game a lot better feel. The new battling style is amazing; I was quite skeptical at first but after a few days of playing I realise this change is for the better, that alongside the complete transformation of Pokemon from 2d to 3d, which by the way has been done amazingly. However, every game has its downs and despite the amazing game play and interaction, the makers have not delivered on story line, I took me a day or two to complete the story line whereas when I played platinum (which is my favorite) it took me well over a week not including the extras you can do afterwards. The story line of X and Y is small, predictable and you can tell it was aimed at a child audience and not the veteran Pokemon players. Post game there is nothing much left to go off, you end up spending your time looking for new Pokemon with nothing to do with them. So, in conclusion I think this game is worth getting if you wish to experience the new game play of Pokemon and its many new features; however if you get the games for the story line then this might not be right for you as you will be dissapointed.

Pokemon Y is a great game overall. It's fun, it's addicting and rewarding. You can connect to people all around the World to trade, have battles with or maybe become friends! Not going to lie, this is my first ever Pokemon game, and I'm 23 years old. This game was the reason I bought the 3ds XL, and haven't had this much fun with a game since Skyrim! I finished the main quest in 72 hrs, mind you I did train a lot in that time, so I can imagine it can be finished a bit sooner tho, but where would be the fun in that? it's also great that you can claim a Pokemon if you buy the game new; one that you cannot catch in the game. It's also great that you can customise your appearance, and just go around the towns and fields whenever you want and to just look around. It's not complicated at all; all ages could play with this game easily, even if you haven't played any Pokemon games before! My boyfriend did say that it resembles greatly the previous games and they kept many things fans loved about it, just upgraded it to the next level finally! There are a few downsides tho...The game only allows one save-game at a time, meaning if you have a brother-sister-friend who wants to try it out, unfortunately they can't. I think it's something that should have been allowed, because let's face it, who would buy two consoles so both their kids could play Pokemon? That is a bit inconvenient in my opinion. Another minor thing is, that you have to have a hat on your character at all times! I personally don't like it, but honestly, this is such a small thing, it doesn't matter or effect the game at all! This is a great game overall, probably one of the best of 2013!

Not sure what else can be said about this game that the other 50+ reviews haven't said already; Obviously the glowing praise for this game is justifiable when you play it. Was a Pokemon fan from the days of blue/red on the original Gameboy; actually had all 151 original Pokemon on my blue cart (including Mew!) until my 10 Year old nephew started a new file and erased my hours of play- Needless to say this left me pretty traumatised!! Didn't really pick up much on the series moving forward but as soon as I saw footage and previews of Pokemon X/Y I knew I had to get it.Not long finished the main quest (in around 31 hours)...Unashamed to say, at nearly 30 Years of age, that there is immense satisfaction at catching Pokemon (even though 90%+ of the Pokemon you catch you have no intention of using in battle!) to build up your Pokedex, evolving Pokemon you have in your party, and (especially) catching the legendary Pokemon. Theres definitely a certain degree of addiction with this, and an even bigger degree of satisfaction, and now i've finished the main quest i'm using the low level Pokemon kept in my storage boxes to level up and evolve them- I need to fill my Pokedex!!!!!!Anyway; If you're reading this review and stuck in 2 minds whether or not to buy the game, it really is as good as everyone else is saying- Visually beautiful, presentation is as slick as anything, and there is obviously a hell of a lot of gameplay, and a lot of Pokemon to catch on top of this (how do they fit so much content onto such a small cart??!!)Buy it already!!!!!

Well to start off I love Pokemon but upon hearing about this game I wasn't too sure what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised, it contains the same experience as the other games where your character catches Pokemon to fill the pokedex, win gym badges and defeat the elite 4The new graphics are nothing short of stunning, I find the 3d effect doesn't add much depth so I tend not to use it but it takes nothing away from the experience, it's much easier to feel a part of the experience rather than just watching on from above. The plot of this game I found was the best yet, I was fully emersed in it and didn't find it tedious as I had in previous games. One of the main things I was worried about was the addition of new Pokemon. In black and white the new Pokemon were just terrible, but it seems again I was pleasantly surprised, the new additions don't look so pixelated as in black and white and are all loveable and great designs with some of the old favourites thrown in. This allows for older players to recognise some of the old Pokemon and create a great familiarity. This game is nothing short of flawless, the character customisation and new 3d aspects create a better game experience and help to make the player feel part of the game. The battles are also much more fluid and the use of backgrounds and more visual attacks create a more realistic experience.Overall this game is definitely my favourite 3ds game by far, it holds all the familiarity of past Pokemon games but is the breath of fresh air the series needed.
