I'm going to be totally honest here; I'm a veteran when it comes to the Pokémon games, and although I've only clocked up just shy of five hours of gameplay, I think that given that I've beaten the first trial Kahuna, it's time to give my first impression of this game.My first Pokémon game was Red and I've played every game that came out since then, including the infamous Black and White. Following the release of Black and White (and the subsequent spin-offs, Black and White 2) I was hesitant to go back into the world of Pokémon, but X and Y were excellent additions to the series, introducing features that had never been seen before in a Pokémon game. So, given my affection for the sixth generation games, when I heard about Sun and Moon being released I became very excited! And if you haven't discovered already, these games definitely live up to the hype!In brief, this game is beautiful. It completely turns the whole system of Pokémon on its head and giving it a whole new lease of life. The outdated gym system is gone, being replaced with island trials (which are fairly similar, but much more exciting!) but I'm going to keep on rambling about how much I'm enjoying this game so far, so I'm just going to dive right into the review...Graphics – 5/5 - It's fair to say that perhaps this is the most attractive Pokémon game I've ever seen. The scenery and landscape are true to the Hawaiian look of the Alola region. There are tribal, indigenous elements running throughout what I've played so far; totem statues, palm trees...Soundtrack – 5/5 - The soundtrack... What can I say about the soundtrack? It taps into the typical ukulele music that is synonymous with the Hawaiian/Alolan culture. The background music as you explore the region is very soothing, and the addition of wild Pokémon cries is actually a very wise move in my eyes. It gives you an idea of what Pokémon are available where you are, but also makes it a tad more realistic (for a handheld game, anyway!)Storyline – 5/5 - The story itself is very interesting. I'm not that far in to the game so I can't comment on the ending, etc. but I do like where the story is going so far. The NPCs involved with said storyline are very quirky, believable characters and everything seems to flow together nicely. The game has far more cutscenes than any other game in the series, but as someone who enjoys watching cutscenes, for me this is only a good thing and it's great to see the characters moving as they would naturally, rather than the look of the stilted sprites that we had from generation 1 to generation 5.User Interface – 3/5 - For me this is the only downside, though for most this actually may be a positive, especially younger players who may be unfamiliar with the series. The actual UI is very aesthetically pleasing, however the in-battle mechanics have been spoiled a little bit, in my opinion. For me, one of the many things that I enjoy about the Pokémon series is having to remember each types strengths and weaknesses. In Sun and Moon, the need to remember this information has been taken away and you are prompted as to which moves will be strongest against your opponent (providing you've encountered them before). It does make life easier, but it does take away a challenging aspect. It's just one minor thing, the rest of the user interface is very attractive, including RotomDex (yes, your Pokédex is possessed by a Rotom!)So in-game, I've just landed on Akala Island. This island has three challenges so there'll plenty of opportunities to train my team, which consists of; Dartrix, Meowth, Drifloon, Pichu, Rockruff and a Cutiefly at the moment, though no doubt that will all change when I eventually face the Alolan equivalent of the Elite Four at the end of the game.If you happen to be a fan of the Pokémon series, I encourage you to buy this game. It's refreshing, it's fun, not to mention it's absolutely gorgeous!

I recommend this game for any pokémon fan, old or new, it has been a joy to play, though I have a few minor criticisms- As always, there were some great features from the previous generation that I was disappointed to see were not included in this generation, such as the dex-nav, super training, some of the mini-games, the ability to sneak through grass using the analogue pad, etc.- Character customisation is a bit limited in some ways, there are new options for accessories but seemingly less choice of style when it comes to clothes, I miss a lot of the outfits from X and Y, and for some reason you can't be ginger anymore.- A few pokémon that would really have fit the region were left out entirely, such as bellossom, and some that really deserved regional variants were left as their normal forms.- There aren't many good places to grind for levels, though you won't have to much in the main game it's something that may hinder your progress in the post-game.- No strong rival again, which is a shame because Gladion could have been a strong rival if he'd been given a full team instead of just one or two pokémon.- A few favourite TMs have been replaced with not-so-good moves, such as Dig with Leech Life. However, the rest of the game is spectacular.Visually the game is beautiful; the world is no longer made of square tiles but instead an effort has clearly been made to give the environments a more natural look. Every character now has a 3D battle model now instead of just a flat cartoon sprite like in gen 6, and the pokémon have probably the best models I've seen in game yet.The poképellago feature is actually a lot of fun and useful too, allowing you to get items like evolution stones that were previously quite hard to get, farm berries, increase you pokémons' stats and happiness, hatch eggs without all the running about, and you can even get a few rare pokémon. The island challenges are not entirely dissimilar to gym battles but they are different enough to make this a new experience for returning fans. The captains and kahunas all have a bit of personality too, some even being more involved with the story. And speaking of the story, that's actually pretty good this time too, with full animated cutscenes, great characters, and a satisfying conclusion, with challenging boss battles and legendary fights too. Everything feels connected, and there's plenty of connections to other regions of the pokémon world too, so you'll likely find little easter eggs from your favourite past pokémon games. The Z-crystal moves are a really nice addition, not quite in the same league as mega-evolutions but they are fun to use and can get you out of a pinch at times. The rotom pokédex serves as a reminder for you when you get lost, telling you where to go next and marking your destination on its map to guide you, a nice change from in previous games where it could be quite easy to get lost. Finally, the new pokémon designs are all pretty decent this gen, none are truly terrible and some are really really well designed, taking inspiration from real world animals that fit the region, and in general the older generation pokémon included in the game make sense too (though as I said before, some that were left out would have fit well too), the new Alolan forms for many old pokémon give them a new lease of life too and it's been such fun learning all their new abilities. So, all in all I recommend this game, it has its flaws but it's still a really fun and enjoyable experience.

Sun and Moon are a refreshing addition to an old title, without a doubt they are the best within the whole game series. There are lots of new or tweaked features in S&M that have made the game alot tougher and more enjoyable. For starters the new pokemon introduced in S&M seem alot more... "interesting and just more" than those introduced in previous titles like X&Y and B&W, also the layout and areas which you catch certain things like the "baby" pokemon seem to make the game far more interesting. The longevity of the game also seems alot better than previous versions as the game itself seems tougher, this could be because i never liked the idea of "Z moves" as i never liked Mego-Evo in X&Y,without these distinct advantages or the usage of the Demo gift, the whole game lasted far longer than previous titles. The new gym replacement "Island trials" at first, seem like a easier and less challenging replacement as you only take on 1 Specific Pokemon and whatever that calls for help, but this actually is far more difficult and more interesting due to its vastly increased statistics. Also details on training specific pokemon has become alot easier to understand over previous games which allows you to find and train pokemon with more potential alot easier. Also the lack (so far as of Jan 2017) of a National Pokedex is not implemented, which may seem as a bad thing, worked out as a better factor of the game, there are 301 / 800+ available pokemon so you are hardly limited for choice, but there are more reasonable trade offers in game rather than past games where players wanted the "1 and only" pokemon in exchange for a thing they caught at the start of the game.Though it is the best game in the series in my opinion, there are a few things that i do have to point out are rather negative aspects, first and formost, the game still includes mega-evolution which was a rather disliked feature by alot of players, though this is a end game aspect, with little bearing to overall gameplay, also it is not forced upon you like X&Y / OR&AS, so it is not a major problem. The main other complaint i have is that the online interactions (battles / trades) are alot more of a bother to access (you have to access a seperate area to access those features) than in X&Y which was accessable at any place and at any time, making it less desirable to participate in these.Overall though both S&M are brilliant games and any fan to the series, be it 20 years ago or just recently should definatly try these games.

I'm reviewing this as a lapsed Pokemon fan who loved the early generations and had their curiosity of the series piqued by the recent success of Pokemon Go.The games have moved on tremendously since I last played. Gone are the old gym systems, HM's and the intensive grind to level up a team evenly. Now, you complete a varied set of trials, which whilst still culminating in a Pokemon battle, feel more individual and interesting than the old gyms. I was somewhat concerned when I'd first heard of the change, but it really works. Also new is the concept of Pokemon Refresh, where you pet your Pokemon and feed them candy. Again, I thought this could be very gimmicky, but its surprisingly enjoyable and rewards you in battle later on for taking the time to do it. PokePelago is another nice touch, and finally answers the age old question of what happens to your pokemon whilst they're stored in the box. No need to feel guilty about stashing that ratatta you caught back at the start of the game in a box for the rest of eternity!!!The game feels easier than what I was used to, with much less time spent solely trying to level up pokemon which aren't strong enough. Whilst its nice not having to spend hours circling in the same patch of grass to level up, it maybe feels like they've gone too far as there is very little challenge till late on in the game. This however is about the only negative I can draw, and can be avoided by turning the exp-share feature off.The setting of Alola makes for some lovely scenery, and the soundtrack is enjoyable too. The characters themselves are all well defined and I found it easily the most engaging storyline of any of the Pokemon games I've played (though that isn't saying a huge amount). This makes carrying out the tasks and challenges that bit more enjoyable. One of the biggest plus points is how quickly you can get access to a range of typings in the wild, making building a team much more enjoyable than the normal early game experience. There are also plenty of legendaries to catch during the game, and some fairly challenging post-game content. Once that is completed, you can always take your team online and face up against other people, who will often be even more difficult yet.Overall, a really good game and an enjoyable way to get back into the series for a lapsed fan.(Reviewed on the 2DS, so cannot comment on 3D)

As a long time fan I found this one to be more of a beginners entry for newcoming players. The attacks are marked with "super effective" and "not very effective" against your foes, there's several moves that have been removed (to my personal inconvinience, "Dig" for one is missing). There's no national dex, there's no HMs, the bicycle is gone, and the post-game is lacking like it did in X and Y. What is there? There's a 2 hour long tutorial if you're not mashing through the dialogue which besides just the plot is telling you everything you knew for years except it's not 2 minutes where your rival shows you how to catch a pokemon, it's 2 hours before you get to adventure by yourself with minimum interruptions on the other 3 islands. The S.O.S calls which kind of replaces the scanner from oRaS for shiny hunting was very annoying even when you're not after shinies and just want to move on. The trading system is also made more inconvinient, the lower screen one-button connect and trade was removed and instead replaced with a whole procedure being the Festival Plaza. The good things are as previously mentioned, easier to pick up for newer players or children who lost interest after attempting some of the much older games. The plot is more interesting, the AI is a bit smarter to have some challenge, leveling can be a bit harder if you're not grinding since there's a bit less NPCs on your way to the main beef being the Totem Pokemon which pack a stronger punch and have allies with them. There's less new pokemon introduced, some being Alola forms of Kanto's pokemon some being entirely new. The villains were also well done, but their deal is more with your in-game rival and friend than it is with you as the player. Pokemon Amie still stayed in the form of Pokemon Refresh which not only raises friendship with your party, but also heals any status effect done to them like poisoning, burn, frozen and paralyzed. It's raised even quicker than before since you can pet your pokemon after every battle if you like. Nothing like giving your pokemon a scratch behind their ear for beating their opponent.

I've played Pokemon since the initial release of Red and Blue/Green, and Pokemon Sun is definitely up there with one of my favorite games to date. While some 'gen wunners' complain about all of the releases after gen two. my complaint so far was only towards Diamond/Pearl/Platinum before picking up again, and Sun/Moon have more than shown that they've returned to their original glory. Don't get me wrong - Sun is entirely different from the prior games, even X/Y. but that doesn't necessarily make it a bad thing. It's a breath of fresh air with new mechanics like SOS Battles, a revise of the Pokemon Amie with Refresh, as well as inventive new ways to train your Pokemon and even their IVs so you don't have to spend hours searching or breeding for that one 6IV Pokemon. My complaint would be with the Festival Plaza - to me the PSS was perfect. Why get rid of it? But now you have to go to an entirely separate part of the game just to go online, as well as having to go through a clumsy list of people to find your friends to battle or trade with. It's a bit silly, but it doesn't detract from the game as a whole. The more story-focused elements were great. though I do wish they went a little more 'mature' with it, as there was so much suggested through random logs, or even part of the story itself, of a darker underbelly that's never truly explored. There's also the Battle Tree, which is Sun/Moon's version of the Battle Maison that has some...peculiar AI to it, which can make it a little frustrating. But even though I've completed both the Pokedex and the story I'm still playing the game to this day.

Probably the most developed plot of any Pokemon game I've yet played- it definitely keeps you moving through the areas really cohesively and well. However at times the narrative, in the form of extensive and unskippable cut scenes, does grow very tiresome- the first hour+ which you would expect to be exciting and fun to draw you in and keep you enthralled, was something to be endured. The game play was fun, but lacking some of the depth of X&Y. I have 80+ hours played on X&Y and having completed the main storyline continued to play it pretty extensively collecting clothes etc. However in Sun and Moon the clothing choices are SEVERELY limited despite being a firm fan favourite in the earliergame. The new Alolan forms are an interesting gimmick however none of the new starters particularly stood out as being the "cutest" or "coolest" in general newer gen Pokemon seem to be getting a bit stale when compared to the imaginative forms of earlier gens.I enjoyed the game but sadly I see very little replay value in it. Not the best outing in the Pokemon franchise by a long shot.

Having played the original three games way back when, and then Pokemon Gold I hadn't played a Pokemon game again until this year when I smashed through Omega Ruby and Pokemon X; it was Pokemon Go that gave me the urge to play them and it was those two games that gave me the urge to buy Pokemon Sun.I like the idea of doing away with the game badges as it's become dated over the last 20 years so introducing new ways to progress is refreshing; I also like the nostalgia of adding original pokemon in the area and the fact that some of them are different types; Geodude being steel and Vulpix being Ice types etc. These games always get me hooked; if you're a fan or a new comer you won't be disappointed. The only thing that does gripe me are the performance issues on the older DS',not sure if it's the same with the "NEW" 3DS and 3DS XL on my older one it sometimes lags when you're in multiple person battles such as battle royals or doing 2v2; not a big issue really just one to be aware of.

Review by my Grandson Toby:This is an excellent game. It has simiarities to other Pokenom games such as catching the main Pokemon that the game is all about. In this case Solgaleo is the main Pokemon to catch. Getting there is a difficult challenge but enjoyable with some bonus features as Z- powers which allow you to power up your Pokemon's move. Unlike Pokemon Omega Ruby or Alpha Saphire, when you use this power you may visualise the process of getting there. In addition to the menu you can now activate festive plaza. This allows you to interact with computer generated people and help them satisfy their needs. In doing so you gain FC.These help you to buy special upgrades. Two of them also help with your daily life. These two places both tell your fortune. You have to pay for such benefits in FC. You can also buy little upgrades to help you get further in the game such as a Pokeball shop and a clothes dyeing store where you can change the colour of your clothes.

This is a great game for those who are new to the Pokemon series. Being shown which moves a Pokemon you have fought is weak to, for example, is something that helps inexperienced players better learn and enjoy the game as now that there are 18 different types figuring out who is weak to what can be very challenging. That being said the amount of tutorial segments which are included in the first part of the game can be tiresome for experienced Pokemon players and the game can slow to start, however once you are past this stage the game is very enjoyable, humorous and fairly challenging in places. There are no options to choose Easy/Hard mode however for more of a challenge I recommend turning off the Exp.Share and/or changing the Battle Style to Set in the Settings if you are an experienced Pokemon player. If you don't mind sitting through cutscenes and tutorials this is a great game with hours of content for both long-time Pokemon fans and new players.

*Bought on the eShop*I tend to be very skeptic about games with tons of hype no matter what platform but, man, this last Pokémon has been and still is (played only around 13 hours) a wonderful surprise.First things first, aside from a few and rare slowdowns during battles with three or more Pokemon this game is a visual delight compared to previous games. From the character and pokemon models to the environment and the new cinematic cameras, the game manages to surprise. Then, it comes the best. Z-Moves make most of the battles really interesting and thrilling. The Island trials and Grand trials will make you forget the old school gyms after you have gone through a few of them.Combat and customisation are as deep as always if not more yet very accessible for everyone and last but not least, the signature of every pokemon game, a huge game world filled with secrets and near endless content.Probably my best money investment of the year.

I've been a life-long pokemon player (yes I'm in my 20s) and this is the first game for quite a few years that has been genuinely exciting! The other recent pokemon games I've played were X, and Omega (too short stories and ended up being a bit dull). But I've almost finished Sun and it's kept me excited the whole way though. There are small differences in the game mechanics, which rather than detract from it, give it a new lease on life. The battling is slightly updated, and the effectiveness info is actually quite good without being intrusive.I think the story line is interesting, occasionally a bit self-mocking, and very different to any of the last ones! The only thing I think is slightly overdone is the fact that you are led by the hand through the game - a bit more self discovery would be good and feel less rushed.Buy this for kids or for yourself - any pokemon fan will enjoy it!

Being a fan of Pokemon from the beginning and playing nearly every game since the franchise started, I think this game is targeted towards the younger generation. Compared to the other Pokémon games it is very easy and rather annoying with the pin points leading you from one task to the other, there are no challenges or thinking it through. There is also a lot more 'talking' from characters making it long winded. Not the most exciting Pokémon game I have ever played but still enjoyable to some aspects. I am giving it 4 stars because I still believe some of the imagination hasn't disappeared from the original generations, some of these new Pokémon look fantastic but it is a shame that the game wasn't more challenging.

Fun, very different from the standard format, and as addictive as usual! I loved the location and characters. And it has an AMAZING SOUNDTRACK!As much as I enjoyed this game overall, my only complaint is that it holds your hand waaaaaay too much. The Rotom Dex shows you the route ahead, tells you where you need to go and even helps during battles by showing effectiveness of attacks. For newcomers to the franchise its probably very helpful, but as I've enjoyed the games more or less from day one it became quite irritating :/ If they wish to keep this feature into later games, I hope they make it possible to turn it off! (I've searched, cannot find. Sad face.)Still,I will never get over Alolan Dugtrio.

Bought this for my daughter who is an avid Pokémon fan; she had this to say about it:"The graphics have been heavily altered to 3D RPG models compared to the pixelated squares they used to be. They have gotten rid of the grid-stye movements to allow for smoother movements and more control to the player. However, the game has lots of dialogue and hundreds of cutscenes, which are completely unnecessary and make me just pound the 'A' button forever. Regardless, this is a good game for fans and Game Freak have listened to the woes of players who are fed up of sacrificing a party member to be a HM slave by removing HM's all together and introducing PokéRide instead. It is worth it!"
