The fitting instructions were clear and WRITTEN with clear diagrams - not just those series of incomprehensible drawings with symbols alone. The door is quite substantial for its big size and, although it's not a five-minute job, fitted easily in our wooden back door's bottom panel. My only disappointment has been that the spacer pieces, which line the space between the outer and inner frames, (rightly identified by another reviewer as fiddly to fit) are white and stand out like a sore thumb in the brown frame in our brown door.I like the fact that you slot in an opaque plastic panel at night, if you wish, so it's more difficult for a small burglar to get in and, perhaps more importantly, the dog can see that the flap is locked. Our previous flap had side slides to lock it - the position of these were not readable by the dog, with the result that it sometimes used to crash into it when trying to dash outside! We have a porch/small conservatory outside the door so can close and lock the porch doors at night to make the house more secure. This new door was bought to install in our 'new' house for use by our 'new' rescue female Irish racing greyhound. Her last race was only two months before she came to us in England, so we were concerned that a dog not recognised for its intelligence and used to a completely different life style, in kennels and on race tracks, would not even consider that this device was a door. However, after a week or two, starting with inducements, demonstrations, calling, pulling and encouragement, followed by standing outside with her collar and lead clinking when she was inside and really excited to be going out to see some small furry animals, she now will go in and out (extremely carefully!) without problem.Occasionally the flap does not end up completely vertical with the magnets engaged - although I expect a gust of wind would result in complete closure.

So, I wanted a simple cat door for an interior door so that my dog would stop eating the cat food. I didn't care about insulation, locking mechanisms, magnets - turns out, I just wanted a door that swung freely from both sides. I'm sure such a door exists, but I bought this one not knowing exactly what I wanted, and I was determined to make it work.Anyway, the good - it was very easy to install, looks great, and operates just as it's supposed to. I popped the door off, drew my outline, cut the door, screwed in the cat door, popped the door back on, all in under an hour - and wala, instant cat door. The only problem - all 3 of our cats didn't get it. We went through some "training" and they could kinda use it with some prodding, and if left in the room, they'd eventually figure their way out, reluctantly. But since both their food and cat litter were in the room, I didn't want to run the risk of stressing the cats out too much. The main problem seemed to be that it "sticks" - mainly because of the built-in magnet, and also the felt strip around the door. So, after a couple days of skiddish cats, I went to work to remove the magnet. This was a bit challenging at first, but the easiest way seemed to be to remove the entire plastic border around the one side of the door with a pair of needle-nosed pliers and a screwdriver. Once that's removed, you can pry out the magnet and remove the felt strip. Now the door swings free and easy, and the cats are much happier (or at least I suppose they are). Granted, I may have been too impatient and they might have learned to use the magnetized door with time, but it really seems to me that there should be an option to painlessly remove the impediments on the door in order to optionally have a free-swinging door, or sell a cheaper version without all the gizmos. Just a suggestion to the manufacturer.

I struggled for some time trying to figure out how to give my little Chi-weenie a way to access the big backyard without me having to let her out and back in since she likes to go in and out frequently throughout the day. I have a glass/wrought iron storm/security door plus a traditional wood door. Since I only want my dog to have access to the yard when I'm home, I didn't need to put a hole in both doors. So, I figured it would be easier just to put a pet door on the storm/security door but it's made of glass. Thanks to the Cate Mate's design, I was able to make it work!I had to 1) cut part of the wrought iron with a reciprocating saw, 2) replace the glass with an inexpensive acrylic sheet I got from Home Depot with a Dremel tool and 3)cut the interior frame (step 4 in the instructions). I used a hacksaw instead of a sharp knife as the instructions suggested. It was safer and easier since the plastic is pretty thick, even in the grooves made for the cuts.To make it match the door and not look like an eyesore, I painted it black let the paint cure for a day before I mounted it.The final result is really good and it's both rainproof and wind proof. We get some pretty nasty storms in Mississippi yet the Cate Mate has stood up to them all, even tornado like winds from a storm last week! It's keep out the hot/humid and cold/damp air as well. Despite the door's ability to keep the rain and wind out, my skinny little Chi-weenie is able to go in and out without any resistance from the door. It's also nice to know that if the flap ever wears out, I can buy a replacement flap for about $14 at Pet Mate's website. It may be on Amazon also. All these benefits were available for a fraction of the cost many of the other products I was looking at and they wouldn't accommodate a 1/8" acrylic sheet!!! Thanks Pet Mate!

Met all my expectations, well made and had easy instructions, but I must say the cut-out dimensions where different than what I saw posted and I went to their site (Petmate) and got a template and it was a tad too big as compared to the template that comes with the unit itself. The actual size for the template is exactly 8'' wide by 8 7/8'' long with small curved upper corners (about the size an radius of a quarter) and the lower, bottom corners are rounded with a radius of 1 1/4'' or about the size of a small round bottle bottom....find a bottle with 2 1/2'' bottom and it works perfect to make the lower/bottom curves...just found one and used it to measure and it was on the money.I'm going to take a photo of the actual,no joke, template that comes with the unit (it is paste board/card board) I attempted to use Windows Paint but it looks like childs scribble.I was able to take a utility knife (box cutter) and trim off the part that fits into the door or wall that separates the two halves because my outside wall was a screened in porch that I used quarter inch hardy board as a sort of wainscoating, in other words, I have a knee wall 30'' high. By trimming off the excess it fits perfect without having to fur it out or shim it to make up the difference in thickness. One shot is the inside the other the outside. and as you can see no strips or anything was needed, which would work perfect for a thin aluminum door or sheeting such as I used to frame up the screen porch. If you look close to the half that protrudes it has small lines to go by to trim to fit your particular thickness. As stated mine was a tad less than a 1/4''. BTW they (the two halves) screw into each other you can tell by the larger hole which side to put the screw into and it will 'draw' the other half up and tighten.

My problem was a upvc door that already had a hole, and a very jagged one, badly cut into it for an old dog flap that broke. I made sure I got smething whose dimensions would mean the hole was definitely covered. Everything's fine, except that when I push the "lid" down at night to lock my dog in, if it goes all the way down and clicks into position, the little flaps at the top are too low to push into their slots; so I have to ease the lid down, push the flaps into the slots at the top, and click them in, then make sure the bottom bit has engaged enough - it won't go all the way down to click into position - to hold the door shut. This is actually a minor irritant and probably to do with having no choice in the positioning of the dog flap, over the existing hole, but I mention it as it is well worth checking everything you possibly can before installing! The door is also the wrong width for the "tunnel" pieces to fit in, but that's covered in the instructions. Me, I cut them narrower and narrower until they fit exactly, then fixed them in position with a dab of no more nails. Not quite as pretty as I'd hoped but not to worry. The not-very-thick thickness of the door also meant the screws needed shortening, and it took me a while to find someone with the wherewithal to cut them down to size and finally fix on the little white caps. Anyway, job now done, dog's happy, I'm happy, so, yes...UPDATE: one of the magnets very soon came unstuck. I've still not got around to glueing it back on somehow, so every time its windy and raining, the sole magnet doesn't hold the flap closed and the floor get soaked with rainwater.

rarely give 5 stars, but this product was perfect for what I needed. looked at several designs until I decided on this. the litter box and feed were always in the way. I have an enclosed porch with a solid door. perfect spot! other models required cutting of cheap plastic to fill the void between the front and back sections inside the door. this unit is designed to perfectly fit together, without having to figure that out, the front section is molded to cover the inside of the door, whether solid, or hollow. the instructions are concise, and I installed it in about an hour. (I like to be precise). this unit would not work well if you plan a pet door that leads to the outside, there are models with this manufacturer designed for that. the locks, though not heavy duty, work well, as options to contain you pet. it took about two days of gentile coaxing, and that was it! (I think it helped that its a French door with windows, my cat could see her food and liter box). the door is quiet, (it sounds like a drawer opening), and the weather stripping, (strong selling point, as my front porch is unheated), is very effective, as the magnet to keep it closed is a good strength. my hint?, install the unit with the locks facing out, the unit looks "cleaner" inside the house. well made, easy install, clean design, and no more smell in the main house. p.s. the smaller version would work just fine for normal size cats, this one is large enough for any medium sized critter you may adopt in the future....... egads........

Generally well made and (time will tell - but) seemingly quite strong. The fitting of this product would definitely be easier and much less time consuming if the reveals (the plastic parts that are cut to width to fit across from the inner to outer part to cover the edges of newly cut door panel) were either a fraction thicker or the slots they push into were a little narrower so that the reveal actually has to be push fitted into them (and wouldn't fall out of the side they were already in quite so readily, while trying to position the 2nd side - especially when being fitted by one person). That would make a tremendous difference to the hassle factor and time taken! Of course, they can be glued in place on the first side, but the lost time whilst the glue gets really set and hard means there's a lot of time loss whether gluing or trying hard to keep them in place with one hand while manoeuvring or screwing with the other. A nightmare so easily averted - it seems ridiculous that it hasn't been done. For those who can't work it our for themselves - it could be a good idea to say in the fitting details that when fitting where the security is less important (and the ply/wood is thick enough to allow it) it is much easier to simply screw this product in place than to mess about cutting to length and trying to line up the screw headed bolts supplied. In fact, if clutched (security) screws are used they are very nearly as secure anyway.

I bought the first of these 7 years ago, not for cats but for dogs, and it even allows my collie cross terrier to use it, the opening really is quite sizeable. The first of these flaps lasted for 6 years and would have kept lasting, despite my terriers flying in and out of this flap countless times during the day. It was my Giant Schnauzer who finally broke it, by trying to break through it, going mental scratching on it (45 kilos of force, no wonder the poor flap broke after that). The use this flap gets in our home is insane, and it keeps lasting. Only thing is, if you want it for dogs, locking the flap might lead to it being broken, as well as that I tape my locking mechanism into open position always,as it can end being moved to locked by the dogs knocking it. With mine being taped up to always stay open, I have no issues at all.One more thing, while the flap lasts and lasts, the sort of felting/brush part to provide a wind protection, does go eventually. It gets dirty with time and then the flap will just be blown about by the wind, so either have the flap where wind is not so much of a problem, or do replace it more often, even though it isn't broken, but just for the felt/brush part. Cats might dirty it less, but my dogs certainly do after a while. For me this flap is a miracle. My terriers crash through it with speed, day in day out, but it takes all the abuse without flinching. Love this flap.

This door is perfect for my two pomeranians! I installed in about 10 minutes. Very easy to install if you are handy with a jigsaw. I got this door because i had to constantly open the door that leads to my backyard so they could do their business. I read the reviews and it seemed good to me. At first they didn't know that the flap could be pushed open so i taped it up for the first hour letting them run in and out (bribed with treats of course). Then i let the flap down and they still seemed afraid to push it open. One of them actually followed right behind the other and the magnet was strong enough to whack him in the face and he didnt go near the door anymore!!I thought i had wasted my money..But luckily the magnet on the bottom is easily removable so i took it off. This allowed the flap to swing freely and didnt not close completely but it was only to teach them that they can go in and out through the door. Throughout the day about roughly 4-5 hours later they needed to pee so they went through the door without the magnet then after that it was a breeze for them. At the end of the day i put the magnet back on the bottom portion so that it would actually close again and luckily my dogs knew with a bit more effort, they can still get in and out and now its like they are running through it just for fun. The locks are perfect too for when i don't want them running in the rain. I love this door.

I love my cat doors. Best Buy ever!! This is my 3rd one. Bought two more to install in new place after I moved. It works fine with my fat 23 lb cat as well as my others. I installed it on an outside door and even in the blowing wind in the winter it didn’t bring in anymore air than the crack in the door.To get my cats used to going in and out of it I taped the door open for maybe two weeks closing it by inches after the first week to get them used to pushing it with their nose. Two of my cats caught on quickly. One still bats at it with her feet till it swings open to let her in. The other does a combination bat and nose push, but they all still get in lolOccasionally my very long tailed cat gets his tail caught on the way in a little. Not so it bothers him but then the door doesn’t close/latch all the way. It’s not usually very long before another cat goes in or out and it closes again but occasionally I have to bat it shut myself. I just “yell” at him, “were you born in a barn?”My fat cat is also a fluffy medium haired cat so about once a month I have to get the fur off that collects on the fuzzy insulation of the flap. No big deal.If you are thinking of getting a cat door...do it! My cats and I love this one and it sure beats getting up every 10 minutes or so to let in/out one of four cats OR leaving the door open and losing heat or a/c!!Like I said...Best investment ever!!

I purchased this door for my cats to use to get to their litter box in the basement of our house. The one is pretty large, about 18lbs, hence purchasing the small dog door instead of cat door. We installed this on a basement door and the directions weren't very clear. It came within two different sets for two different sized doors (Make sure you make the right sized holes for the screws on each side of the door). Nevertheless we figured out the installation. I did not think my cats would have a problem with the door because they have litter boxes with door flaps on them and they never go outside their litter boxes. But this door had a magnet that was just a bit too strong for them. When they pawed at the door it would not move so they did not want to use it. We decided to remove the magnet (with a razor blade and needle nose pliers) so it would not stick closed. One cat still seemed to have an issue with this but he is scared of EVERYTHING. So that's just him. For now we have taped the flap open until he is used to going through the hole and later we will take the tape off. It is a very well constructed door I wish I had realized there was a magnet beforehand and I probably owould have picked a different model but overall it does the job and we do not have to worry about accidentally closing the basement door anymore

This may be a dog flap, but it works really well for our large-breed cats. We have Main Coons and as one of the largest breeds, normal cat flaps just aren't big enough. It's easy to train them, the magnetic closure works well, and they do a pretty good job of stopping drafts. We have a steel back door, so fitting required a cutting disk approach. It was easy enough with a my Black & Decker Dremmel style cutter. Drilling all the way through first provided the corners to cut to.We've been through a few of these over the years; the seals are good but eventually fail, and we generally remove the in/out only tabs as we've had cats lock themselves out through messing (I know, tell me about it!).That said, I don't want to suggest that our cats don't give these doors a real pounding, because they do! They run through them at a hundred miles an hour, bat them and that''s in addition to the outside weather. What is really brilliant of PetMate is they they haven't changed the design/form factor - so after 18 years in the property, and three cat (sorry, I mean dog) doors, we can get the same again and not worry about fitting. So, for those that want in-out functionality, these work very well, but if you don't I've found that you can easily prise-off the mechanism. Either way, this door has proven to be very effective.

This is a great little device. First of all, it is very easy to make a home-made pet door but, not as fine and polished as this one is, what with its brushed gasket and magnet and all. It looks neat and clean and very professional. Maybe, when you bend over and down the switches could be a little bit more easy to switch. But I'm certain they will work more effortlessly after they're used about a month. The template is perfect. I, at first had the brown one just like this one picked out and this one went on sale for considerably less but, now I figure I'll still get the brown one sometime in the near future, as well. I think I remember someone saying the template was wrong with theirs. But it'd be easy enough to make your own template for this if it were omitted from the box or something. Probably just trace around the plastic, not the outer-most completely square parameters, but along the outside of the inner-most door opening. You'll see. I just wonder if anyone out there has put this up on their door about a yard high or something. And with maybe a little ledge both inside and outside maybe as a perch so your cats could still have an easy access. I'm wondering if that would dissuade raccoons and opossums and such. Probably not. They climb anything a cat can. I'm probably just SOL on that.

We got this on Amazon for half the price the pet shops were charging. We previously had a smaller version fitted for our cat and terriers, but needed a bigger door for the new collie pup. This is the perfect size for him and is still light enough for the cat to push open. This dog flap is really robust. One of our dogs (staffy cross, solid boy) charges through the door at speed, and I wouldn't hold it against the product if the flap broke off after a couple of months, but it still functions as well as always after 6 months of abuse and shows no signs of weakness! It comes with a solid plastic cover which slots easily over the door to act as a lock and barrier, making it obvious to your pets they can't get through.Much better than other versions which allow you to lock the flap but your pets don't find out untill they've run into it!You do need a jigsaw and drill to fit this, but minimal DIY skills as the instructions are really clear, and the frame hides any wonky cutting!Do be aware that this door is big enough for a person to get through. I am small and can fit through easily (handy that time I had locked the back door from the inside!) which could be a security issue if the locking panel wasn't fitted.Overall great product which stands up to a lot of use :)

Pros: Locking Doors, Easy Install, Quality BuildCons: I haven't identified any yet. I did have to cut off the magnets because it was my cat's first cat door, and he couldn't figure it out until it opened easily after the magnets were removed. Prior to that, he was just pawing at it but not hard enough to open it.I bought this cat door so my cat could get in and out of our garage, where we keep his food and kitty litter, without us having to leave the door open all day. Leaving that door cracked for the cat made the house way too cold in the winter and way too hot in the summer. This cat door came as advertised (I have prime so it was quick). The construction was very sturdy. The instructions were fairly simple and clear and the install went without a problem. My cat, having never used a door, didn't push the door hard enough to open it so I cut the magnets off and it worked just fine and the cat figured it out and was comfortable after about 24 hours. I had to kind of push him in and out a few times for him to get it.We've had it now in winter and in summer, about 8 months now, and our home's temperature is night and day different. It's great! I'd recommend this and would buy it again in the future if I had another need.
