A few people have reported this. I had the problem too, investigated, found out how and why and fixed it.The flap wasn't closing properly, it was catching on the surround and jamming slightly ajar. When I looked closer at it, it was apparent that the flap had dropped a bit and no longer swung freely. I tried lifting it, but it wouldn't move much or stay up.I dismantled the inner part of the assembly and found that the flap should be held up by two little flat springs, but my flap was below the springs, not above them as it should be.After a few attempts at reassembly and the problem happening over and over, I finally saw what was causing it to drop. The screws I'd used, which were the shortest that reached, were long enough that they pushed open the inner face of the inner assembly far enough that the was able to drop past the springs. I cut around 6mm off of the length of the screws, and after that the flap worked flawlessly. If you have to disassemble the inner assembly like this, pay attention both to which way round the flap fits and also that you don't reverse one of the magnetic strips. This cat flap replaces an earlier version of the same model. There are a couple of improvements ... the spring is good in that it allows the flap to 'stick' better when closed, so it's less prone to blowing open in strong gusts. The four-way 'switch' is easier to see .. we had to mark our old one with a magic marker so we could quickly check that it was closed. This new model, though, is much flimsier. The old one lasted quite a few years with the off repair. This one will not last anything like so long. I would quite happily have paid more for a good, solid, cat flap, but just about every one I see is flimsy and often flawed. This one still seems to me the best of them, but it could have been better. They're all made 'cheap', whilst they should be made good value. If I'd costed into this my time spent messing about, it would have cost a total of nearer 40. That's not cheap for a cheap product.Four stars because, despite the above, I still think this is better than most.

Disclaimer: You could say this isn't an amazingly robust cat flap as our cats destroy one of these each and every year. They don't just somehow detach the pieces, they literally BREAK them. This is because on occasion a bit of dirt might make it trickier for the flap to open, so, instead of being patient and pushing it a bit more, our cats decide it just doesn't work and break through the frame. Yes, the frame. I didn't think it was really logical OR possible until I caught them on the act. Initially they would break it when we would turn it to "locked" mode to stop them from going out for some reason. So now we don't lock it.HOWEVER: I cannot really blame the catflap for our cats going FULL-HULK on it.This is NOT a flimsy catplap, it takes me a good 15 minutes with 2 hands to open the frame. Seriously, there's nothing really wrong with this flap, and at this price it's a real bargain compared to many of the fancier ones.

One of my cats managed to try and propel himself through the old flap that was locked at the time - it being -4 or 5 outside the old flap was a little brittle and cracked near a hinge. Searching online for a replacement flap soon proved more expensive than replacing the whole unit (shame on Staywell for making and selling them in this way - they should be looking to reduce plastic use, not encourage it!). This one was ordered and delivered within Amazon's standards and was quickly fitted in place of the damaged unit. What was nice to see, is that the dimensions had not been tweeked to cause problems fitting it with the new one being some 5 years older than the old. With the basic four way controlit works as expected (our cats are supremely capable of shedding a collar with a magnetic key and the risk of battery failure on a sensor type not something I would welcome) there is no problem with the cats using it.

I like this brand and I've had a number of these cat flaps. This new one is not the same size as previous ones which is really annoying because the previous one was a bit larger and it was the same brand, however this time I had to make more holes in the door and mess around to try and make it fit and used part of the old catflap which is the same make so I wasn't best pleased. The mechanism for keeping them in or out could do with being a little stronger because all my cats have eventually managed to break it. It would be much better if it wasn't plastic and the magnetic bit has come off in the past. I'd like a manufacturer to make one that was a bit stronger. They need to be consistent with size - I don't want to have to buy a new door with my new cat flap or have to do a major DIY job and repaint the door to make it fit!

Fantastic product. Used to have this at my Mum and Dads house and it was great. When I bought a house with my girlfriend and got a different one, I regretted it. We've moved again and are back to this, I'd never have a different one.Nice and neat. Easily lockable if you need to keep the kitties out. Easy for them to get in and out. Quiet compared to our last cat flap. Sturdy.Definitely buy this if you need a cat flap. One piece of advice, remove the keys from the back of your door you install this in and get a sash lock. We were burgled by thieves using a device to fish the keys from the other side and had both our cars stolen :-( you live and learn but please learn from my mistake.

The product itself is excellent, I bought it as a replacement and swapped them over no problem. While I was feeling smug that it had all been so easy I then went to remove the warning stickers on the front. One above the flap was completely gummed with what seemed to be black glue and another on the flap itself was some of the stickiest matter known to man! Considering that furry animals were going to be passing through it was imperative that no glue should remain to attract nasty lumps of fur on the flap. Cue half an hour of scrubbing and scraping with a variety of implements and substances. Don't be like me - attend to the stickers before fixing the flap in place!

Fits perfectly in a PVC door. If you are looking for durability this probably isn't it. I am sending a similar one back for the same problem which meant my old one broke - if you have older cats who are strong they will literally just barge through the unit if you lock it. I used to keep my cats in at night so they dont stray or fight but they decided to go out anyway and left this in pieces. The only thing that stops them doing this is the magnetic strip is way too strong so they assume it's locked and start pulling the whole thing apart trying to get out. I take the magnetic strip away and it still functions as a cat flap but is a bit rattly

I've not given this 5 stars because the flap seems to break every 12 to 18 months - however my dog likes to stick his head through this quite a lot which I'm sure doesn't help! Once a few years ago I locked the flap so that I could capture my boy cat and take him to the vets. He doesn't like the vets. He ran straight at the flap full pelt and broke it - leaving an almost cartoon like cat shaped hole! Don't worry, I somehow managed to catch him as he scrambled up the garden fence.I keep on buying this same type of cat flap as it fits the hole in my glass patio door perfectly and I think for the price this offers reasonable value.

I bought this to replace a really old cat flap that had broken. I hoped ,as it was the same make, it would be the same size and screw into the same holes. It did fit well (nice and snug) but the screw holes don’t line up with the old ones. As I don’t have a drill I haven’t been able to secure it properly yet. For this reason I can’t comment on the locking feature as the cat can just push the whole thing out if it’s locked. I only know this as my daughter locked it and I later walked in to the kitchen to find the cat flap laying on the floor.I am pleased with the cat flap though and will be even more so once I can borrow a drill.

Really pleased. The staywell 17 cat flap I had was 15+ years old so the plastic was brittle and breaking off and the rubber around flap was perishing meaning it wouldn’t open or shut properly.Research said that this new Petsafe Staywell flap was the newer model of the previous one. So crossed my fingers and ordered. Was a simple 5 minute job - unscrewed the old one, took out, put new one in and screwed back up. Perfect fit, screw holes in same place. Cats can now come in and out safely and I know the won’t get stuck out again. Plus they are enjoying seeing each other and playing cat wars through the flap.

This is a replacement for the same cat flap we’ve had for about 10 years. Modestly priced, it's the best one we’ve tried. It was easy to fit first time and even easier to replace.Tried the costlier magnetic ones and our cat was always loosing the pricey magnets & then would barge it open so it broke soon.If you have a strong cat they can head butt it and damage the lock as our’s did, but only when it got to the end of it’s life and eventually the rubber seal came off too. It still functioned perfectly well without the lock/seal. We replaced it because the wind was blowing it open too often.

I bought this to replace a disappointing Staywell 300. Even though it is basic this is a strong cat flap. Solid door which is secured almost on the bottom of the flap preventing it opening on one side if pushed. Easy to fit and operate. The magnet holding the flap shut is quite strong to start with and my cat took a while to get used to it but it is secure even when windy. The only thing I would improve is the frosted flap, previously I had one of these which had a clear flap and this enabled a timid cat to see what was outside before she ventured out. Otherwise a great flap at a great price.

I have next to no diy skills and was able to install this myself although was a bit of a faff but could have been my door rather than the flap.I wouldn’t recommend getting this cat flap if you have a small cat, the flap has a magnet which holds it in place even when fully unlocked and our small cat is struggling to get the flap open on her own, so probably more suited to a bigger cat or one that is used to cat flaps. Also don’t forget to account for the height on both sides, forgot about the drop outside so will have to build a platform to make it easier for the cat to come back in.

I was afraid of my cat sleeping out this winter with snow and so but I'm so broke I have to spit in the frying pan to do my eggs in the morning so I went for that one. It works like a treat. It has a magnet at the bottom so the door doesn't flap when it closes. I was scared it was a little bit tough to open for the cat, but he is strong, so strong that with one catslap he can change your zodiac sign. It's easy to install and it comes with a paper template. The only thing is it has the tunnel included, so you can install it through thick walls or cut the leftover if it's too long.

Does what it says on the tin. Have had two in separate houses, one magnetic and the other not. I won't make that mistake again. The neighborhood kitties that were put out on a night used our porch as a B n B. It was costing me a small fortune in cat biscuits ! Not a massive problem.... BUT this morning after taping the catch down because our cat was struggling to get in and out....I found my very expensive motorcycle clothing had a very strong Tom cat calling card odour !!! Will be taking the mechanism out for a good clean as it has been there about 3 years. Great product IMO. ?
