My 2 cats are starting to get use to it...scared them to death at first. My bedroom door go out to a screen porch an they love going back an forth, it almost drove me crazy. Now they come an go at will an don't bother me to let them in an out. They still have not gotten the hang of opening the flap themselves but we are doing it by stages. I taped the swing door open so they could 1st get use to going in an out on their own. We've only had it in a couple weeks. Next we will teach them how to open the flap themselves. But so fare its GREAT! I'm happy an the girls are happy!! One is 9 yrs an the other 9 month an both are enjoying it. Worth the price for sure.UPDATE:7/22/2014 Cats refuse to use the flap and we wonder if it is because the flap is tinted? I called Petmate up and they said they don't make a clear flap replacement and the rep couldn't have cared less(typical customer service!). I use duct tape to hold the flap up and we use a small pillow propped up against the opening to keep out the Texas heat. The cats have learned to move it aside when they want out or in. We just have to put the pillow back up all the time. I guess I'll try another brand with a clear flap and see how it works! Has anybody else had this problem? Thanks-this update posted by Bill. UPDATE:7/24/2014 I wrote an email to Ani Mate and received a response and YES, they do carry a clear replacement flap and the person I spoke to originally was wrong. I emailed Amazon receipt and because it still under warranty, they're shipping the flap free of charge. Thank you Petmate for correcting the problem. We'll see if my cats use the new flap. I'll update this review in awhile. Thanks, Bill. UPDATE:1/12/2015 Cats are using the clear flap!Took out the magnet and locking mechanism so the older cat could get in and out easier.Still use a pillow at nite to keep out heat and cold. Bill.

We replaced our original catflap of this type which worked perfectly for ten years. The new one is a near-identical product, slightly updated but a straight swap to fit.Getting the flap installed initially was tricky. It took the double-glazing company three attempts to successfully cut the correct hole in the glass door without damaging the glass - so do be aware that you'll probably need professional help to get the glass cut in the first place. Thereafter, fitting the catflap itself was really simple, although it does help if there are two people, one for each side of the door (otherwise you need to be in two places at once, using three hands...)In the 10 years that the cat flap was in use,our tomcats regularly fought other cats through it; standing on opposite sides of the flap and battering away at each other by hitting the flap back and forth. Frankly, I'm amazed it stood up to this treatment for so long. After eight years it lost the insulating strip (which didn't seem to make a whole lot of difference, to be honest), and finally the hinge-fitting expired this summer. Amazingly robust, especially considering the low cost.Very happy with it, hence replacing the original flap with an identical one. And will probably buy a spare and stick it on a shelf, in case the company stops making them... because we did try an alternative make from a local shop, but it wouldn't fit the hole in our door! Very relieved to find the Cat Mate still available online. The only downside to the flap is that our incredibly dim female cat still doesn't understand how to use it. She watches the tomcat go through: she mews for us to open the door so she can follow him. If only the catflap came with instructions that a cat could comprehend...9/10

Swings back and forth perfectly with a little hesitation in the middle for the magnet (designed to do that). I like the bristles because they act as an odor barrier and a little bit of a brush for my 14lb cat.Installed in the side of a bathroom vanity so my kitty has a place to go! Littler is not seen and she enjoys the privacy. I trained my cat in 3 weeks- could have been sooner.Week 1-2: leave door to vanity open with litter in it and leave swinging door open with a piece of tape.Week 3: close front doors to vanity and allow cat to use the door that is open with tape. - the kitty doorEnd of week 3: put the cat in the vanity, close all doors, manually open the kitty door about 1 inch and show the kitty the opening. He or she should push the door open with their nose and be free. Do this 5 times or so in 1 hour and they should be able to get it open next time they have to go.Likes: the package is professionally made and contains different length screws a for very thin frames (like a screen) as well as thicker substrates (like a 1/8-1/4 inch wood vanity). The frames themselves attach together from both sides and "sleeve" into each other. Has cover caps for screws also. You can use this on thick doors, but will need to paint the middle where the wood is not covered or fill I'm the hollow part of the door if you have hollow doors. Very well put together product.Dislikes: I broke off the locking mechanism like some other people due to me being afraid my cat may be locked in or our by accident. It's easy to snap off.

Despite its bargain price I was pleasantly surprised to see what an excellent well made product this is.I chose brown to match the hardwood rear panel door we have and it looks very smart. The plastics are high quality, durable and have a nice shine making it a piece of cake to keep clean. The 'glass' door is thick and strong and tinted which makes it look very classy.Particularly liked the nylon draught excluding brush strips fitted to the door edges, works a treat and no draughts. The action is positive and free in both directions with the magnet being just right in its holding power.Nice details like the little colour matched cover caps for the screw heads just great. The door I fitted it to has very thick panels and didn't use the through bolts supplied, instead I used small wood screws to fix each side in turn, this also gives you more tolerance when fitting to a thick door as drilling the holes perfectly perpendicular to the door can be difficult. I took the door off to install it using a drill and jigsaw. The supplied template is great and gives good tolerance when marking out and cutting. On thick doors it recommends using a tunnel trimmer piece but didn't bother, just gave cut out 2 coats of varnish and its fine. The built in weather sealing strip on the outside face is excellent being spongy enough to take up small irregularities if required. Overall very impressed, so is the cat!

I rate this 4 ⭐️ because it is a bit small. I hope my young cats don’t grow too much more. Also it only has 2 locking options( locked or not). This was kind of my mistake. I got mixed up in details from other doors. I choose this one because I knew I needed an extender and knew this would be compatible and forgot to check for a 4 option door. All in all I’m pretty happy with the product. It seems well built and the install went as well as could be expected. Thank you to the others who left helpful tips on what to expect. Our door needed to give access to the outside and could only go through a wall. The tunnel distance was about 5.25”. 2 extenders were necessary which is what I had anticipated reading other reviews.?.I did not use the template. For the outside wall I traced the inside of the cat door. After cutting, I had to shave off a few mm to get the insert to fit. It got a bit messy. So for the inside I traced the outside of an extender. (After measuring very carefully It went much better. For the thickness of our wall 2 extenders were too long so I had to trim an extender a bit to get a snug fit but it was simple to do with some tin snips.I’ve taped the door open until the cats get used to their new tunnel. No hesitation from them so far. Finally I can close and lock our patio doors again?.

We used this cat flap in one of our DIY projects. It can get cold here in the winter, especially at night, so we wanted to create a small outdoor home that could be used by any outdoor wandering cats. Even though this product was definitely not designed to go through the thin, flimsy plastic that our small container was made of, the screws still managed to secure the door in place, and only created one tiny crack in the plastic, which we later fixed with glue. We also added a little glue on the container's plastic where we fixed the door in place, just to make sure we wouldn't have any issues later on.The door's opacity is very clear, though it has a slightly dark tint, like that of sunglasses. The flap itself is very thick, and is sure to stand up against any weather, scratches, and dents that it could encounter. This cat flap also has some insulated material around where the actual flap is, so that the cold air doesn't seep through the door, making your house cold. The locking feature on the door was very easy to figure out, just press down the button, and slide the button to either the "open" or "closed" setting. Simple, and a good feature to have, even if you don't plan on using it.

This is the perfect size for our door. The 2 cats enjoyed playing with the box it came in and watching me cut out the hole in the door. They lept through the hole I'd cut like 2 kittens having a ball. Then to be sure the door didn't delaminate I coated the cut area with waterproof pva glue.Oh eck before I could fit the flap frame the cats jumped through now they are covered in glue. So after cleaning up the cats no harm done the flap was fitted. Awesome. Great bit of kit. Smooth running draft proof. Then the sleepless nights began. Putting the cats outside and trying to intice them in with favourite cat treats only works when I lift the flap for them. When they want out. They make a terrible noise jump on me pull the covers poke my nose with a paw or rake the carpet till I get up and push the flap open. Once back in bed they make a right din till I get up and open the flap to let them in. Now they know where the flap is they know that they can fit through. But instead of getting a restful night. I have become a cat doorman great product love it only wish the cats would use their heads to push the thing open.

Cats are now 16 years old. We have been opening garage door for 16 years. wish we had bought this a while ago. Professional handman install in 1/2 hour. 13 lb cat learned to get in the house in 1/2 hour, ( used duct tape to hold door open a bit) other 12 lb cat has been caught in have a hart trap and is more wary. Now we have to teach them to go out to litter boxes! so duct tape the other way. Am using dinner/cat treats in garage to encourage going out. suspect the male will get more motivated when weather is warmer. the dogs are jealous.we have a 2 inch foam cored door, install required mitre saw, drill, bits, hammer, and handyman, we did take door off,we put cat door where girl cat had been scratching at door to get in for ten years,( down in corner).Cat door fit perfectly, handyman said very easy to install, and excellant choice. Handyman and I looked at doors at stores, did not see any thing this well made for two inch doors, lock is the best, price was great and free shipping, amazon comes through again.six months later No peeing in house!! cats go out to use litter boxes, has been a great sucess.

Simple to fit, effective cat flap. I bought two: fitted one to the wooden plank internal wall of the understairs cupboard, and the other to the cavity wall from the cupboard to the outside world.I'd not bother with the add-on extensions for going through a cavity wall. I just lined the gap with marine ply, which is cheaper and better at filling the gaps in the inevitably slightly wobbly hole. Moreover, the add-on extensions are only the same size as the hole in the cat flap. For a tunnel the width of a cavity wall you really need a higher hole, otherwise the poor cats would have to wriggle through like worms. This is easy to do if you make the tunnel yourself.I like the way that the magnetic catch keeps the flap closed in a bit of breeze, and the bristle draught excluder then keeps out the worst of the draughts. Not exactly well-insulated, but better than nothing. And the cats are happy.

This cat flab is great once it is installed correctly. The magnet keeps out the cold and my big cat moves in and out of it with ease.Unfortunately it's a bit of a pain to install because the manafacturer does not supply adequate screws. We had to cut the the tunnel piece down to the medium size and the screws were not long enough. My partner had to go out and purchase longer screws and while this comes at minimum expense, it is rather inconvenient. I don't understand why they have bothered supplying screws as they are completley useless! A good DIYer is required I would say which is a shame. In conclusion, if you don't mind a bit of a faf with the screw issue and you are ecperienced at DIY then I would say buy this for your cat as it does a great job once in place. If you want something that comes out of the box and can be popped into place within the hour then don't buy this cat flap.

The Cat Mate is a sturdy cat door that is easy to install and is inexpensive. The door is hinged, as opposed to most doors that are composed of a semi-flexible flap. These flaps tend to wear out and become brittle, in comparison to the rigid plastic of the Cat Mate door. I also like the locking feature, which is a simple slide, as opposed to an barrier that must be slid into most other doors (fyi, you can buy a multiple slide Cat Mate door, which allows you to lock the door, or only let it swing one way. This is great if you want to let your cats out, but not in - or vice-versa).If your door is thick (i.e. typical exterior door), the supplied screws are not long enough, and you will have to buy longer ones. Also, consider buying the tunnel insert for walls or thick doors, which places a plastic tunnel section between the two door pieces.

We were looking for a basic, pretty cheap, no-frills cat flap to install in an external fence panel so that our ageing moggie no longer needed to scale the fence to get home. This cat flap was ideally suited to that job, although if we were using it on a door to our house we might well have chosen differently. The flap is well made, fits securely and does what it needs to let cats in and out. Where it falters slightly is that the quality of the plastic feels a little brittle and thin in places, so be careful not to overtighten when fitting. We have also found that although the flap will rest in the closed position at most times, it will stick open if there is wind blowing against it as the magnetic latch is not overly strong. For a basic cat flap,go for this one. If you need something more sturdy, or more weatherproof, look elsewhere.

I've a metal, 6 panel exterior door separating my living room from the basement stairway and keep it closed in the winter. I took the door off, put it on some sawhorses outside and used a 4" angle grinder to cut the hole on each side. I was careful with my measurements and the installation turned out well. I offset it to allow the screws to fall on the flat parts of the door (not the panels) and used a little white silicone to fill the gaps where the panels are. It took a couple of weeks for Bobby to get used to it, but with some encouragement (and a few whacks on the snare of the drum kit downstairs) he learned how to get through it. I researched the right height, which is the height of their belly. The magnetic detent and weather stripping is a great design. The tinted door is pretty neat as well. Highly recommended!

I bought two of these and installed them in a basement door and closet door and now the kitty litter box is in a closet in the basement, viola. I really thought it was going to be a struggle to teach my cat to use them but I shut her in the closet and she figured it out pretty quickly. I had already trained her where the box was before introducing the cat doors. This really has been a break through for getting the cat litter smell out of the main parts of the house and also not having to walk on cat litter in the bathroom. These were easy to use and easy to install. Love love love them. I have also gotten use out of them by being able to lock the basement one and keep my cat in the basement when I've had workers in the house.Very functional and they work well.

Previous to this cat flap I had a very expensive do everything one that worked off a chip, by I think Petport. All very well until my baby cat decided to do an athletic long jump from the garden, through the cat flap and into the kitchen. Ended up with a totally useless cat flap. Thought that I would go for this one as it was basic and looked quite big. Baby cat is now long legged and just as active. Cat flap arrived. Thought at first it would be too small for the previously cut space in the door. Wrong. It fitted perfectly. Have had this inexpensive cat flap for a few month now. Has survived, rain, gales, two chasing wild cats going in and out. The kitchen is also a lot warmer as it does work. Also it is silent in use. I recomend this product.
