My 2 cats are starting to get use to it...scared them to death at first. My bedroom door go out to a screen porch an they love going back an forth, it almost drove me crazy. Now they come an go at will an don't bother me to let them in an out. They still have not gotten the hang of opening the flap themselves but we are doing it by stages. I taped the swing door open so they could 1st get use to going in an out on their own. We've only had it in a couple weeks. Next we will teach them how to open the flap themselves. But so fare its GREAT! I'm happy an the girls are happy!! One is 9 yrs an the other 9 month an both are enjoying it. Worth the price for sure.UPDATE:7/22/2014 Cats refuse to use the flap and we wonder if it is because the flap is tinted? I called Petmate up and they said they don't make a clear flap replacement and the rep couldn't have cared less(typical customer service!). I use duct tape to hold the flap up and we use a small pillow propped up against the opening to keep out the Texas heat. The cats have learned to move it aside when they want out or in. We just have to put the pillow back up all the time. I guess I'll try another brand with a clear flap and see how it works! Has anybody else had this problem? Thanks-this update posted by Bill. UPDATE:7/24/2014 I wrote an email to Ani Mate and received a response and YES, they do carry a clear replacement flap and the person I spoke to originally was wrong. I emailed Amazon receipt and because it still under warranty, they're shipping the flap free of charge. Thank you Petmate for correcting the problem. We'll see if my cats use the new flap. I'll update this review in awhile. Thanks, Bill. UPDATE:1/12/2015 Cats are using the clear flap!Took out the magnet and locking mechanism so the older cat could get in and out easier.Still use a pillow at nite to keep out heat and cold. Bill.

We replaced our original catflap of this type which worked perfectly for ten years. The new one is a near-identical product, slightly updated but a straight swap to fit.Getting the flap installed initially was tricky. It took the double-glazing company three attempts to successfully cut the correct hole in the glass door without damaging the glass - so do be aware that you'll probably need professional help to get the glass cut in the first place. Thereafter, fitting the catflap itself was really simple, although it does help if there are two people, one for each side of the door (otherwise you need to be in two places at once, using three hands...)In the 10 years that the cat flap was in use,our tomcats regularly fought other cats through it; standing on opposite sides of the flap and battering away at each other by hitting the flap back and forth. Frankly, I'm amazed it stood up to this treatment for so long. After eight years it lost the insulating strip (which didn't seem to make a whole lot of difference, to be honest), and finally the hinge-fitting expired this summer. Amazingly robust, especially considering the low cost.Very happy with it, hence replacing the original flap with an identical one. And will probably buy a spare and stick it on a shelf, in case the company stops making them... because we did try an alternative make from a local shop, but it wouldn't fit the hole in our door! Very relieved to find the Cat Mate still available online. The only downside to the flap is that our incredibly dim female cat still doesn't understand how to use it. She watches the tomcat go through: she mews for us to open the door so she can follow him. If only the catflap came with instructions that a cat could comprehend...9/10

I just spent the last 5 hours of my life installing this door. I wanted to get a litter box enclosure for my cat but they were all too expensive and too small so i realized I could convert the bottom half of my computer armoire into one. I first removed the shelving for the printer and the spot dedicated for the tower. Then used a jigsaw to create the hole (I've never used a saw before but I for some reason feel I can do whatever I want.. That and my dad was a carpenter.) It may not have been the cleanest lines but I finally got it to where to door frame fit. The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the included screws.***BEWARE THEY ARE CHEAP SCREWS!!!*** In the middle of drilling them in i realized they weren't budging. Upon further investigation it became apparent that the threading which helps the drill bit hold it's place had completely worn away and was now a hole in the head on the screw. I had to use the wrench part of a hammer and yank all of them out and tore the particle board in the process. I was able to dig up 4 mismatched screws from my junk drawer to install the door and luckily was able to re-attach the torn board. Now keep in mind my cat is asleep and I have no idea if he's gonna use this thing but that has nothing to do with the overall quality of the product. Purchase if you want but just be ready to use your own screws.**Update: So my cat is now fully trained in using his new litter box enclosure. I did decide to pop off the flap though because it seemed to be too much trouble for him and it was bad enough he had to squeeze through a tiny hole to do his business (He's 15lbs) I would definitely recommend this product even without the flap. It's makes for a nice looking finish.

Swings back and forth perfectly with a little hesitation in the middle for the magnet (designed to do that). I like the bristles because they act as an odor barrier and a little bit of a brush for my 14lb cat.Installed in the side of a bathroom vanity so my kitty has a place to go! Littler is not seen and she enjoys the privacy. I trained my cat in 3 weeks- could have been sooner.Week 1-2: leave door to vanity open with litter in it and leave swinging door open with a piece of tape.Week 3: close front doors to vanity and allow cat to use the door that is open with tape. - the kitty doorEnd of week 3: put the cat in the vanity, close all doors, manually open the kitty door about 1 inch and show the kitty the opening. He or she should push the door open with their nose and be free. Do this 5 times or so in 1 hour and they should be able to get it open next time they have to go.Likes: the package is professionally made and contains different length screws a for very thin frames (like a screen) as well as thicker substrates (like a 1/8-1/4 inch wood vanity). The frames themselves attach together from both sides and "sleeve" into each other. Has cover caps for screws also. You can use this on thick doors, but will need to paint the middle where the wood is not covered or fill I'm the hollow part of the door if you have hollow doors. Very well put together product.Dislikes: I broke off the locking mechanism like some other people due to me being afraid my cat may be locked in or our by accident. It's easy to snap off.

After looking at many models and reviews I decided to pull the trigger on this one.Pros:The installation was fairly simple. As with most doors, its recommended you removed the door and you'll have to measure and balance so the cat door isn't crooked. The provided cutout was very helpful for tracing where to jigsaw (a decent jigsaw is essential). The door itself seems to be of good quality, especially considering the price. I like how snuggly it closes and how little air can come through. It took our cat several weeks to get use to the idea of using the door but with practice, patience, and persistence he learned to use it.The door also has one of the best visual designs I've seen (of course my door in question is white).Cons:The lock button/mechanism is OK but not great. It feels a little cheap and awkward at times but it still functions appropriately. Unfortunately, this model can only be locked or unlocked. Many doors have 4-way locking that allows the cat in but not out. Was this as big as deal as I thought? Not really. When I want the cat to go down he follows or I put him inside. When I want to get him out I unlock the door. The only other thing I would change is I would flip the design or be able to lock from either side. The side that is more flush with the door (the better looking side) doesn't have access to the lock. Being a visually picky person I put the door on 'backwards' and it works fine.Overall:Would I pick this door again? Yes, so far so good.

This was shipped in no time and packaged perfectly. We put this into an interior steel door between the house and the garage. Cutting through the steel with a jigsaw was the hardest part of the job, since it had to be cut individually from both sides of the door (door was too thick to cut through entire door in one cut). I think this could be a 20 minute job, but our challenges took it to a 2-hour job. No fault of the product of course.Once the hole was made, it was easy enough to fit the door from the 2 sides. We have an old, fat cat, and she has no problems going through this door. We got this door as it looked like the weather-sealing was the most advanced, and so far it seems to be working well.I do think the instructions that came with the door were poor. With so many variables for door or walls and thicknesses of both, they should've supplied more than picture-only instructions. There were arrows pointing everywhere trying to establish some kind of flow chart for these variables, but sometimes they were incorrect or dubious, and we ended up installing it more based on common sense than following instructions. That's fine if you have some handyman know-how, but I wouldn't want my mother having to install this by herself. Since you have to cut a hole in a wall or door, and possibly cut the actual product too depending on the width needed, they've just left too much up to an interpretation of diagrams and arrows.

I rate this 4 ⭐️ because it is a bit small. I hope my young cats don’t grow too much more. Also it only has 2 locking options( locked or not). This was kind of my mistake. I got mixed up in details from other doors. I choose this one because I knew I needed an extender and knew this would be compatible and forgot to check for a 4 option door. All in all I’m pretty happy with the product. It seems well built and the install went as well as could be expected. Thank you to the others who left helpful tips on what to expect. Our door needed to give access to the outside and could only go through a wall. The tunnel distance was about 5.25”. 2 extenders were necessary which is what I had anticipated reading other reviews.?.I did not use the template. For the outside wall I traced the inside of the cat door. After cutting, I had to shave off a few mm to get the insert to fit. It got a bit messy. So for the inside I traced the outside of an extender. (After measuring very carefully It went much better. For the thickness of our wall 2 extenders were too long so I had to trim an extender a bit to get a snug fit but it was simple to do with some tin snips.I’ve taped the door open until the cats get used to their new tunnel. No hesitation from them so far. Finally I can close and lock our patio doors again?.

We used this cat flap in one of our DIY projects. It can get cold here in the winter, especially at night, so we wanted to create a small outdoor home that could be used by any outdoor wandering cats. Even though this product was definitely not designed to go through the thin, flimsy plastic that our small container was made of, the screws still managed to secure the door in place, and only created one tiny crack in the plastic, which we later fixed with glue. We also added a little glue on the container's plastic where we fixed the door in place, just to make sure we wouldn't have any issues later on.The door's opacity is very clear, though it has a slightly dark tint, like that of sunglasses. The flap itself is very thick, and is sure to stand up against any weather, scratches, and dents that it could encounter. This cat flap also has some insulated material around where the actual flap is, so that the cold air doesn't seep through the door, making your house cold. The locking feature on the door was very easy to figure out, just press down the button, and slide the button to either the "open" or "closed" setting. Simple, and a good feature to have, even if you don't plan on using it.

This is the perfect size for our door. The 2 cats enjoyed playing with the box it came in and watching me cut out the hole in the door. They lept through the hole I'd cut like 2 kittens having a ball. Then to be sure the door didn't delaminate I coated the cut area with waterproof pva glue.Oh eck before I could fit the flap frame the cats jumped through now they are covered in glue. So after cleaning up the cats no harm done the flap was fitted. Awesome. Great bit of kit. Smooth running draft proof. Then the sleepless nights began. Putting the cats outside and trying to intice them in with favourite cat treats only works when I lift the flap for them. When they want out. They make a terrible noise jump on me pull the covers poke my nose with a paw or rake the carpet till I get up and push the flap open. Once back in bed they make a right din till I get up and open the flap to let them in. Now they know where the flap is they know that they can fit through. But instead of getting a restful night. I have become a cat doorman great product love it only wish the cats would use their heads to push the thing open.

Great value. The only issue my cats had is that the door is hard plastic and has a magnet which makes it stick. Since they were used to a soft flap, the change kind of threw them for a loop. However, they learned if they wanted to get in the house to eat, they had to figure out the door, so they learned pretty fast. I installed this on my porch door that goes outside to the yard, and I didn't want to cut any portion of the aluminum door, so I installed it as close to the bottom of the screen part of the door as possible and up against the vertical edge of the aluminum door frame for extra support. It's a little high off the ground so they have to kind of hop in.I have 3 cats that are large (not fat - just large cats at 15-16 lbs), and it is a bit of a squeeze for them, so if your cats are over 15 lbs you might want to consider the next size up. Otherwise I am very happy with this product and I thought the price was great. The installation was easy but we needed 2 people. We each held a side up on each side of the screen and one of us screwed it in.

I had a special application where I needed a cat door to pass through a single sheet of wood paneling. Since most pet doors are designed to fit a 'thick' door, like an outside door, this was a problem. Luckily, I got to looking and found this...and it looked like the answer...so I purchased it on Amazon. When I received it, I took it out and inspected it. It is high quality and excellent fit for a plastic product. It came with a set of mounting screws for a 'thin wall' application, such as a screen door fit, or a paneling fit...so it worked well for my use. I used my dremel tool to route out the hole in the paneling, using the supplied template they provide you...and it worked like a charm. The door will fit most-any cat...up to probably 20-25 pounds...or small dogs around the size of a dachshund, or so...and has an excellent-quality weather seal, in case you are wondering. I don't see a reason this wouldn't work well for an outdoor pass-through door, either.Overall...I was very impressed with form, fit and function. I highly recommend.

We've had this cat door for 2 months, and it's working out great for us and our furry friend. Installation was fairly straightforward (though did need to double check on the directions for using the spacers on our thick door), and the locking mechanism works well even for our large cat (~16.5 pounds and quite tall). I've seen reviews saying that the cat got locked out. I can see how someone may accidentally lock it and not realize it (we often lock the door from one side, i.e. he can go through one way but not back out), but it won't happen all by itself (so if you lock it, it will stay locked; if you unlock it, it stays unlocked). Our cat is very tall and long,so he looks a little awkward - giggle - climbing through the door (though that is also due in part to the fact that the door is right at the top of the basement stairs). He fits just fine, and it's not worth getting a bigger door. If you have a big cat, this door will work fine as long as he is still slim and in good shape. If you have a fat cat, consider getting a bigger door.

This cat door is installed in the door between our kitchen and our garage. The purpose of the door is to get her litter box out of the house area since we seem to have some allergy problems. Since the cat already liked to go into the garage it was no problem to get her to use it. We propped it open at first and she went in and out the second day. Within a week the door was closed and she was using it many times a day. It closes quietly and seems to seat well. It does not swing back and forth when used. The installation was done by our handy-man and he said the instructions were clear and he encountered no problems. We don't plan to use the lock but did notice that it was difficult to slide back and forth. The garage is uninsulated but heat and humidity do not seem to leak into the kitchen and we're hoping the same is true when cold weather arrives. I should note that our cat is less than 10 lbs and I think the door would be a tight fit for an animal much larger than that.

I have been using a variety of cat flaps over the years in a variety of locations around my "compound". This one doesn't require the magnetic collar pendant the cats wear to open the flap to exclude entry of animals without the collar pendant (because this opening will be for feral kitties (no collars) to get into a climate controlled room during cold or sweltering weather). The door is magnetized to keep the wind from blowing it open, but the kitty, unless you've locked the door, can just push his/her head against the flap and go in or out. My experience with all the kinds of cat flaps has been that the success of them depends on the cat. Some cats will walk right up and let their collar pendant dangle near the mechanism, hear the click, and walk right through. Others require this kind of door. Still others will never push against any kind of door, and you have to prop the flap open for them. Anyway, these Cat Mate cat doors are well made and tend to last many years.

I bought this so my cat could easily go up and down from our basement without leaving the door propped open. It was easy to install, my husband removed the door from the hindges to make it easier. We have a hollow core basement door and the liner fit perfectly. We did not have to make any adjustments. I love that this has a locking feature, so that when we have family parties and dont want to worry about the cat jumping on the tables of food we can put him in the basment and be worry free! My cat is 14lbs and he fits thru with no problem. If he was to get any fatter though we might run into a problem but he doesnt struggle at all.... Only thing is getting him use to it.Right now we have to leave the door flap tied up and open because he will not push the door himself yet. We are hoping soon he will get use to it, but even now, we have it propped on the inside and dont even notice it. I am very pleased with this and it looks great on our white door!
