The smell isn't great but it's not supposed to be cosmetic; this is practical stuff. Shea butter simply does it all. Moisturises, heals, even SPF protection. I got it for my very, very damaged hands which were dry, cracked, bleeding, etc. after years of abuse. Even washing them as rarely as possible was like taking one step forward and three steps backwards. I found out the hard way that simply moisturising my hands wasn't enough; they were too badly damaged. I had been using almond oil which is a brilliant moisturiser but wasn't working for me. Then I read about the difference between almond oil and shea butter; almond oil moisturises, but shea butter heals. By applying shea butter regularly and especially before sleeping,my hands are now normal and no longer dry and damaged. I also sometimes use it on my face after shaving. The consistency of shea butter is very wax-like. It'll eventually melt in your hands depending on your temperature. If you're too cold it will still be sticky for a few minutes. If you're warm enough then it'll melt straight away and absorb quickly. I store it in the fridge and have to use a knife to retrieve it. But I also carry a hefty amount around with me all day and I had no problems at all with this during the summer. As for the smell, I mix mine with a bit of essential oils but this is frivolous and not essential.EDIT: I have since experimented with mixing this with almond oil and coconut oil because trying to get it to melt into your hands in any season except summer is a right pain. Mixing it with either oil has produced an excellent result; the cream is more liquid and can go into a squeezy bottle. It absorbs very fast as well. It may require some heat and shaking to get it all mixed in properly. The end result is that my hands are way, way healthier and less dry with fewer applications. In theory any oil should do. You can also rub your hands for friction to get the shea butter to melt quicker.Just FYI to everyone: do not use commercial moisturisers that have artificial ingredients. Take it from someone whose hands have been ultra-sensitive for years; these things are bad for your skin. They're slimy and smooth but that's all.

I bought this product as I had heard many benefits of using Shea butter, and wanted it in a pure form for use as a body and hair moisturiser. It arrived in a hard lump, and I was clueless at first, but it was easy to learn how to soften it by whisking/ whipping it. I know combine it with other oils; coconut, castor, Arian, and/or essential oils for different uses. Im so happy I bought it, for a number of reasons:Good points- lasts a long time; my pot has lasted for months as a little goes a long way.- it’s natural, so I love using it on my children’s hair and skin.- it’s thick, so moisturises deeply, but I mixed up the shea butter and coconut oil, to make a creme that’s a bit lighter and absorbs more easily.- versatile,as I mentioned, it can be combined with other products, or even used on its own in different ways. I use it as an overnight moisturiser on my feet with socks, as a daily body moisturiser, and on my children’s Afro hair and sensitive scalps. Also works well as a massage oil when combined with other oils to make a thinner consistency. It does have a couple of ‘negatives’ or things to be aware of before purchasing:- the smell isn’t great, I don’t mind it but I know it’s an issue for others.- it comes in a big pot, so can get quite dirty if you just take it out the pot, I put mine in a number of smaller containers after mixing so that it’s a bit more hygienic.- I used it on my face, and for me, this is too thick and isn’t great for my acne prone skin.- it can take a while to absorb into the skin, but I tend to use it at night and isn’t an issue.I would say that Shea butter is an amazing product, and I recommend it for those with dry skin/hair.

This was my first time making my own face & body butter, and it won't be my last! I'm looking forward to experimenting with different ingredients and fragrances. I'm working in small batches for the time being until I find my perfect combo. For anyone interested, in a small double boiler I melted about 50gms of this Shea butter, with about half the amount of extra virgin organic coconut oil straight from the jar. I added a couple of teaspoons of standard grade olive oil and about 6-7 drops of essential oil. Stir well until it's all melted, and let it cool. To speed up the cooling process I took it out of the boiling water and placed the smaller bowl in a larger bowl of cold water.Once it got to a thick honey-type consistent and started getting cloudy, I tried to whisk it to make the fluffy version you see in some "how to"s but the quantity was too small for it to be worth doing. (By hand too!) I decided against it and poured straight into a sterilised, dark 60ml jar. I left in the fridge for a couple of hours and voila! I had a lovely body/face butter or balm. The butter came out a little grainy, not sure if this is because of the lack of whisking, sped up cooling or the combo of ingredients, but once you get it onto your finger it rapidly melts into oil anyway. I have to say it feels amazing and my hands and face have never felt so smooth and moisturised! It doesn't feel cloggy or heavy (I wasn't sure how the olive oil would feel) and it's great for facial massage.Next time I might try less olive oil all the same and buy some jojoba instead, and maybe look at a different essential oil.

I buy this shea butter from this supplier on a regular basis. I use it to as a base to make a lovely natural face cream not only for myself but my friends also. For those of you that are put off by it's smell and substance the 'Unrefined' part is the key. (It is the real deal, nothing fake just in it's natural state)to make about 150ml of cream you need to use approximatley 125g of shea butter, this needs to be melted down very slowly so as not to damage the quality of the butter. I use the same method to melt mine as you would to melt chocolate. after a few minuites it will have turned into an oil substance. At this point you can add whatever your skin desires, such as,a table spoon off Grape seed oil this is especially useful for people with oily skin or macademina nut oil which is great for aging skin, some of my other favs are Almond oil and jojoba oil (for a better quality cream go for cold pressed oils) you can also mix and match your oils to suit.I then add a few drops of essential oils such as rose essential oil, however, this product can be a little pricey so I opt for something simple such as Cedarwood oil (again it is personal preference). Once at this stage you will need an electric hand whisk and yes you guessed it, get whisking. it also needs to be cooled so I whisk mine for 5 mins then put in the fridge for 5 mins and keep doing this until you have a nice thick cream that looks good enough to eat. transfer into 30ml tubs and enjoy.Oh and you should find that the scent becomes more favourable depending on the essential oils used.

This is a great product and does wonders for the skin! I use it as a mix in the body butter we all use (me, husband, a two year old and a six month old, both kids with atopic dermatitis). i melt down two parts shea butter, one part unrefined cold pressed coconut oil and one part almond oil (both also from this company). before cooling i add essential oils like sweet orange or lavender. let cool untill almost hard and then whisk up with an electrical mixer into a cream. heaven on skin. it may seem a bit oily when applied to skin but it absorbs quickly and feel great!i also use only pure shea butter instead of a chapstick, feels great on lips.If anyone is bothered by the smell which to me is like a heavenly roasted nut,it is quite easily masked by essential oils and aswell once you get used to it, its great.i give it 4 stars only because when it arrived my package was broken so it was a bit tricky to get out, but it may be because i ordered more than one thing together from the same company and it got mushed over as the smallest thing in the box. will buy a kilo one next time for sure!!

My hair (4a/4b) loves this. Previously I used another company's shea butter and it turned up in a plastic bag and was all over the shop. It smelt very strong, was sticky (from confinement in a bag I suspect) and I found it messy to use. This product comes in a tub and looks professional. It was in a hard lump, but it is very easy to melt down. Whilst it does have a smell, it's very light and can be used with other oils to diminish it. I find the smell fades from my hair after a day or so anyway.I gently melt this down In the microwave at 10 second increments. I check often as you can ruin it with too much heat. Then I add a few drops of Argan oil, a small bit of honey, Coconut oil and rosehip oil. This will then set eventually, but can use warm. I then apply to the end of my hair up. I use jamaican black castor oil for my scalp.Since using on my hair, it no longer feels as dry on the ends. My hair also looks amazing when I unravel from a twist out - shiny and soft without residue. This will definitely be a repeat purchase.

I have always moisturised my body but recently have been looking into more natural products. This arrived quickly with another product I purchased (almond oil). Being a little cynical I weighed the container, and with the packaging it is 250g so no issue there. I didnt notice any strong smell as some have commented. I tend to heat this in a pot over a little simmering water to turn it into a substance I can use. I havent tried the whipping method some have written about but I will try that as it seems more convenient than warming it each time. I found that it doesnt glide over the skin as easily as something like almond oil or shop bought moisturisers but only takes a few more minutes.I think it absorbs into the skin quicker than almond oil and not as greasy but still needs to be left a little while to absorb. This is the third item I have ordered from this company and will no doubt order more when I have finished this pot and other items as well as so far have been happy with the products and service.

This is a lovely product for making raw, organic body butters. I mix it with carrier oils (sweet almond, jojoba, avocado etc) and essential oils to make fantastic body butters.Everyone has commented how good they are!I make up a general purpose butter as follows:- 2oz raw, organic, unrefined shea butter- 1-2 tbs carrier oil (the more oil, the thinner the butter)- 30 drops of essential oil (I use lavender and chamomile for an all-purpose butter)Whisk the shea butter and carrier oil together; then fold in the essential oil. Spoon into a glass, screw-top bottle. This is great as a face cream (put on 1 hour before bed), an all-over body butter, lip balm, elbow and knee balm, smoothed all over feet after bath or shower (put socks on afterwards for 1 hour). All sorts really!Best avoided if you are planning on putting on foundation though!!

Comes in bits which I wasn't expecting so I had to melt it down in a pan over boiling water, like you melt chocolate, then I poured into an old shea butter container. Otherwise, pop some into a container and leave it in a sunny conservatory to melt. Once back to solid it is easy to get some out by scraping your nail over the top. Wonderful moisturiser for dry skin. It smells of shea butter. I'm not sure why people have said it stinks, perhaps they are used to refined and processed shea butter which is whiter and with less odour. You get used to the smell after use and I'd mauch rather use this than a synthetically perfumed moisturiser that's sold on high streets. This is the real deal, and I have purchased other brands that cost a lot more that have the same consistency and smell, just that they have been melted and poured into the tub.

I don't normally bother with reviews but I just had to share with all of you how beneficial for me and my family shea butter has been. My daughter and husband have dry (eczema) type skin and nothing seems able to help them. They always complain about itchy skin especially after baths and showers. The shea butter has really helped to soothe their itchiness and I'm so pleased to have found something that really works for them after using alot of other paraffin type stuff that did nothing! I have also found that shea butter is an excellent deep conditioning treatment. Try mixing some olive oil, honey, 2 egg yolks with about a tbsp of (melted) shea butter and leave it on your hair for about 30mins.I have natural afro type hair and after trying this, my hair was tangle free and extremely soft! Have a go and see for yourself!

I love this stuff, I've used it on my sons (mild) eczema and it has almost completely disappeared, I also use it on my elbows (the driest place next to the Sahara desert) and my feet, it's amazing, my feet no longer resemble a map. I don't even care that it's in solid brick form, it makes getting it on such an achievement (it does get easier with practice) I also use it in my sons hair after detangling and adding Jamaican Black Castor Oil, rub on some shea butter and it stays looking moisturised all day, also good to add after rubbing through some pure aloe vera gel. My husband also had some sort of skin condition spring up on his stomach,we're not entirely sure what that was but a few applications of this product and it had completely disappeared.I think this is a miracle product. I worship at it's pot base.

One thing i look for is how fast the shipong was, this was great! It only took five says to recevive, and i live in Denmark. The quality is great too, shea butter is a very soft butter. It is non/low comedogenic, and i believe that, that it true. I am very acne prone and i have combination skin and this haven't broke me out. I use this as it's own on my lips and sometimes I put aloe vera gel on top of that too. It really helps my dry lips. I am going to use it to make a lip butter too. I'm just going to use Almond oil, beeswax, a little bit of blush, coconut oil, honey and shea butter. I also use it on my face and i even made a body butter with it. It became kinda thick though, but it was my first time. The only downside is the smell, i don't exactly hate it but it's not my favourite. Highly recommended

I've spent the last decade trying to figure out why my skin was so acne prone, however in more recent months my skin was growing more and more unbearably dry and itchy and irritated whilst also riddled with acne too. It turned out that silicons being the main ingredients in my cosmetics and skincare was the root of all evil, which prompted me to find an alternative moisturiser. I've been using this Shea butter whisked with some avocado oil every morning and night for two months now, and I have never seen such a drastic improvement in my skin before!!!! It no longer itches, my acne has almost all gone away, my scarring is depleting, my skin is HEALING! If you're at a loss as to what new acne or skin issue treatment to try,try Shea butter, it's saved my skin!!!!

I was so shocked at the size of the pot, I had no idea it'd be this size! It's huge! But you can tell straight away from the smell that it's pure shea butter and it's absolutely lovely. It does come in a block which looks a little like a block of cheese but I melted mine down in the microwave and poured back into the pot. As it is completely solid I use a small metal surgical spatula to get out a little product (ordered off Amazon, £3.50) and warm on my hand and apply. I use this as a lipbalm, as a facial moisturiser, as a face mask, hand cream. It's a very versatile product and I really like it! Have a feeling this might last me the whole year, but I will definitely repurchase when I start to run out!Love it.

Will be ordering the larger size next time. Sensibly priced for a staple product for those of us who like making our own skin & hair concoctions. It has been cut from a block and is not melted down to fit inside the pot. This makes it easier to lift out and slice off the amount desired for use and avoid the irritation of having to scrape out the pot later. The smell is what you'd expect for this natural product. The packaging protects the product nicely and makes it easy to store. Performs as expected when melted and whipped or mixed with other ingredients.Shea butter is harder than some butters so you expect to whip before use btw.I find this supplier reasonably priced and reliable so will order again.
