What Ultra Smash on Wii U lacked in terms of features, Tennis Aces does a superb job of correcting those mistakes. The truth is, this was a release sorely needed to keep the Mario tennis franchise relevant.Aces shines best in its gameplay, which is precise, slick and chock full of controls. Some might even say that the sheer number of controls is overwhelming (particularly if you are new to tennis games), but the good news is that you can play in a Simple Mode that limits the gameplay to only the essential inputs.Zone Shots, Special Moves, slowing down time and more are all incredible additions that can drastically alter your strategy, provided that you master them. And this is where patience is due,as you'll be rewarded for learning how to pull-off these tricks at the right moments. Despite the greatness of these moves, I've actually found the Simple Mode more enjoyable because there is less pressure, though this is subjective.Swing Mode allows you to play the game using the motion controls of one Joy-Con, which is your racquet. Being a veteran of Wii Sports, I half expected to be swinging the controller whilst the CPU did all the graft, but as it turns out there is still a lot of manual control involved. Not only can you move the player and control the type of contact using the buttons, but synergy between the position of the Joy-Con and the impact on the swing is amazingly lifelike. This may well be the biggest test within the game...If the game falters however, it's unusually due to a lack of Nintendo polish. Animations and many of the graphics have simply been carried over from Ultra Smash, with the former sometimes looking a little lacklustre and robotic. There are no easy options to select a stadium in free play (Rather, you have to 'deselect' the stadiums you don't want to play on!), few customisation options with regards to equipment and attire, an inability to select the match length, a forced split-screen and no option to change the difficulty level of the CPU.4/5 seems fair as I've no doubt that many of the missing features could easily be corrected in future updates. What's most important is that gameplay is on the ball, and I can see myself having hours of fun with friends and family.

What a fun game. This game is so very accessible that anyone can play, yet if you want depth and challenging tennis you can get that here too.Its a nice looking game with every character really getting to pop from the screen. Courts have various themes and each is lovingly crafted to feel straight from one of the many games that Mario has jumped his way through. Even stage hazards are here to add some chaos to the proceedings which just adds to some of the strategy of play.Like I say this is accessible to anyone. So much so if you liked Wii tennis the motion control is back and feels like that.....just with a Mario lick of paint. The adventure mode is here offering a variety of challenges and things to do.Even adopting a small RPG like mechanic where you level up and even aquire new tennis rackets.....that can break so use wisely.Lastly online works fine. After the open tournament I was skeptical as some connections were awful. But I have yet to experience that here so kudos to NintendoThis is another great game to add to your switch library. Much like the console its based on its very versatile and all of fun.Would like to have seen a few more modes personally or even guest characters a la Link, Samus or Kirby. Something like a SSB roster you knowBut what's here is fun. And very intense if you play with someone of an equal skill level.Serve this at your next gathering and hours of fun is guaranteed

This was my first Mario Tennis game, and I was really wanting a different game than MK8 (which I have on WiiU) to enjoy.Whilst it's not as much fun as my beloved Virtua Tennis on the Dreamcast, this still does have some mini games to enjoy during the single player campaign. Plus some tough challenges besides (I'm only so far through).Multiplayer wise its good and offers local & online modes. What I will say though, is that it probably won't provide as good of variety for non tennis fans as say Mario Party, Mario Kart or other such games.Plenty of characters in this though, sadly doesn't seem as though there's many courses but the 3-4 different surfaces are covered. Besides, like on football games, once the game gets underway your not really fussed where you are playing, are you?Overall, this delivers what I was wanting. There's stuff to unlock through single player game (unlike MK8 Deluxe), it provides a change of pace and due it selling well hopefully we'll now see Mario Golf and other big sport games coming to Switch (PES and Madden ??)Not tested the 'Swing Mode' yet, didn't like the Wii's poor motion controls and prefer a proper controller. I'm sure it'll be better than those 10 year old controls and maybe some day I'll give it a go, but not at this moment in time.

I have ways been a Mario tennis fan way back to the N64 days, my favourite being Mario POWER Tennis on the GameCube oh boy that game was an absolute blast! Of course those times have been and gone and now Mario Tennis has needed to Innovate it's formula to stay fresh with all new power moves. If I said I didn't like the game I would be telling find, I really like this game alot but I do feel at the same time I just can't love it like I did the GameCube version. The story mode is very lackluster to start of with, not mush depth and feels very thrown together. There is only subtitles for when characters talk and there are no cut scenes and I feel like im playing a £30 Gameboy advance game not a £60 Nintendo switch game.BUT,Let's put that all aside and turn to the gameplay, this is where the game really hits it's stride, singles and doubles matches with a nice solid bunch of characters with or without power moves is a good showing and the game is alot of fun.All I will say is apart from online play or playing against friends I don't know how much longevity this game will have for you or even myself. All I know is I love a solid tennis game and if you love mario then this is it.But I wouldn't hope on this game keeping you completely invested for months to come.

Fantastic gameplay, it really is a challenging, fun game to play online and with friends. Nintendo have done a great job as always of making the gameplay fun for everyone, including the most competitive gamers. The main reason I can't give 5 stars is because of the story mode. The gameplay itself in this mode is actually really fun and well thought out. However, for some reason - another classic Nintendoism - the user experience of this mode is awful!First you have to sit through the boring dialog between each match, which you can sort of skip through but you still have to wait every now and then for a character to make a repetitive grunting sound. Then you wait for the court/level to load (fair)before getting to play. No problem... as long as you don't fail the level! If you do, there is no 'Retry', only a 'Quit'. So its back to the dialog, the load screen and any court preamble, all over again for you.Why they didn't just give us a retry button is beyond me, reloading the same stage again and again is whack on many levels. Every play-tester must have brought this up!That said, if you don't have your hopes up for the story mode, you're going to love this game.

For some reason I was pretty hyped for this game.Long story short: after over a month, it's only feature you'll go back to is the online tourneys that start off with pleb tier spammers and quickly rises to near impossible straight sets against monster players. You'll need to find a character you can cheese your opponent with: I find wrong footing lower tier players with the plain wicked curve on boos' slice is my way to win.Campaign basically a tour of all the features, one level I still can't do due it's plain cheap unfairness. No reason to revisit once done. Can do online doubles and couch multiplayer is fun. It's good, but try and pick it up cheap. Addictive, bubblegummy arcade game that had OP characters that thankfully have been nerfed.Fun, dip in dip out game.

Great game overall! Just a few weird things, like old sounds being reused. The footsteps when walking in adventure mode sound like they're straight from super mario 64 which bugs me. But overall, adventure mode is alright, but unfortunately the story wasn't as good as I anticipated. But the core gameplay is great, tournaments are great, regular online play is great, but unfortunately you can't ever choose which pitch you play on, it's always randomly chosen, which makes the game feel very limited. But again, the core gameplay is greatso, and that's what matters. Definitely not 5 star worthy though. I'd recommend buying this if you're a kid or have kids,or if you just like nintendo and want to play the new mario tennis game.

I’m really enjoying this arcade style Mario tennis game. The core gameplay mechanics are clever and online multiplayer certainly keeps your heart rate up! There’s a lot more than just hitting the ball back and forth, it gets rather frantic and addictive very quickly. Single player does seem almost too simple, especially the basic picture story in between stages (which feels like it was from a game in the 90’s). Overall though, it’s a solid arcade multiplayer game which is a blast to play off tv and on handheld mode.

Very fun game and very addictive when you play online. After 2 or 3 hours of online gameplay, the connection with other players always seems to be laggy and affects the gameplay. Initially I thought it was a broadband issue but now I believe it could be due to the console overheating causing the wireless network component inside to not function at full capacity, but I could be wrong. The game also has swing mode which uses motion control which helps young children who are not advanced enough to play without.

Includes story mode and both local and online multiplayer. The gameplay is perfect mix of tennis play and Mario world wackyness.Only negative experience with this purchase was with Yodel's delivery procedures. Not being able to change the address until an unsuccessful delivery has been made, but it's a small package so just goes through the letter box with no point of refusal. If I had moved far away there'd be no way to retreive it.Both Yodel and Very customer webchats were useless help.

So I initially got the game for a simple tennis game however the game has large story mode with lots of different tennis activities or variations.Game is fast to load and had a lot of difficulty settings available, me (34) my son of 10 and my son of 6 can all enjoy a difficulty to our level. Graphics are clear and sharp on a large TV and handheld, with good soundtrack and sound effects. Online multiplayer works well and can add a lot to keep you coming back to and they plan to add free DLC.

This game really is great fun for all the family. The adventure mode is great to allow you to learn the various special skills although be warned it does get tough in the second half of the story. There are also casual modes and if you have a friend or some family to play with then the multiplayer is going to offer both laughs and a few competitive grimaces. Not an essential purchase but if you are bored and have the money burning a hole in you in your pocket, get this.

4.7.2018

The core mechanics of the game are solid, responsive, well polished and highly addictive. There is some seriously fun tennis action here when playing online or with friends locally.A good roster of characters help keep the core game fresh and with new free DLC characters being added at later dates. The only real niggle here is the single player mode is not as fleshed out as I had hoped and has some odd difficulty spikes but it's an enjoyable experience anyway.

This game it’s so great and addictive that my thumb hurts of so much playing it. The adventure mode it’s fantastic and I’m happy to say that this isn’t and easy game, you really have to work hard to go further in this game. And then you have the online mode witch you can play tennis with people around the world. After playing Zelda , Mario kart and oddisey., this was a great choice for my collection . Now just can’t wait for Mario party and Pokemon to be relised.

Nintendo, to their credit, have not created just another tennis game and simply added their characters to liven the game up. Nintendo have taken the game, introduced some unique elements such as energy, special moves (of which their are quite a few), four player ability and so much more. Initially, it seems odd having these non traditional features within a tennis game but you soon appreciate that this widens the appeal and make for a great game.
