If like myself you're of the generation who played Super Mario 64 upon its release, and were dazzled by the concept of a 3D environment that invited exploration, then you'll no doubt have had trouble accepting where the series has headed. This isn't to say that previous entries have been bad, but the 'wow' factor had somewhat been dampened by safe formulas.Enter Super Mario Odyssey, and boy oh boy was it worth the wait. You can tick off all the features that we've been clamouring for and more besides. Exploration? It underpins your progress entirely, with little to guide you other than your curiosity. Memorable soundtrack? It's one of the best the franchise has offered, featuring a huge range of instruments and styles. Customisation? Mario can purchase a wardrobe that will instantly put a smile on your face, ranging from snorkels to caveman outfits. And new boss battles? The creativity and characterisation finally makes them feel less like a chore, and more entertaining.Nintendo always deliver on gameplay, so it's unsurprising that the controls feel tight and instantly familiar. While Cappy may steal the show, classic moves make a return - the triple jump, long jump, back-jump and more - and it's just as comfortable to play in any controller configuration. Combined with the HD Rumble and sound effects, you get a wonderful sense of each environment that you wander, and you can't help but attempt different moves even when there is no reason to.You're also in control of what kingdom you travel to (The 'Odyssey' happens to be Mario and Cappy's airship), and how you spend your currencies. Regular gold coins can be exchanged in any kingdom, but purple coins are unique to the kingdom that you find them. Souvenirs and clothing will quickly fill the Odyssey! And if you get stuck for tips or new ideas, then you can view the travel guide and map for each kingdom. Presented just like a real tourist map, you can read it and view photos. But if there's one thing this game does better than any in the franchise's past, it's the storytelling. Peach may have been kidnapped again, but the narrative does an excellent job of helping you to root for Mario and his companions, with a clear arch and cut-scenes that play out at the right moments. The result is a much more cinematic entry than before, which adds plenty of drama instead of only cheap laughs. Case in point; the opening titles don't appear until around 20-minutes into the game, and you'll be in for some twists during the second and third act.Odyssey may well be a landmark game for Nintendo. Zelda: Breath of the Wild was always going to be a contender - and certainly one for Game of the Year - but whereas that game re-wrote the rule book for Zelda, I believe the Mario franchise was in greater need of a title like Odyssey. It's appeal stretches to just about anyone who can play a video game, and the quality in execution is flawless. Get it!

I've just bought a switch,I was waiting for the games library to grow which it now has,so August 2020,a little late to the party but not too late,at least I've got a better battery life and more games out.Mario odyssey one word....... BRILLIANT........all the 9.7 out of ten reviews are correct,no game or film or piece of music is perfect but this game is as close to perfect as you can get,Don't rush through it in 20 hours, revisit world's for more moons,it's amazing fun finding them and some characters will help you find them but some you just find,so addictive,so fun,I have a PS4 pro and Xbox one X,I was getting bored of shooters and racing games,Forza horizon is great but it's the same withbetter graphics every 2 years, playstation is a bit better with God of war,Spiderman, horizon zero dawn and the ghost of Tsushima and those open world games are better than racing round tracks and fields but even they start to feel the same after 4 or 5 games but at least they are quality games,Mario odyssey is the best mario ever made, the biggest and the best,The FUN just ooozes out of it,it's magic and you need to buy a switch,Xbox series x and ps5 are releasing with hardly any games and they estimate a 500 pounds price tag just for the console itself, don't bother, buy a switch and some amazing games instead.Dont worry about the switch having less power, the games have very good graphics and run well, especially Nintendo's own games which are usually 1080p 60fps,4k is overrated,I've got a 4k TV,the 4k games look slightly sharper but not a big difference from 1080p unless you sit about 3 feet away from the screen and see a bit more detail but when it comes to GAMES,Nintendo is the winner and they are now outselling Xbox and catching up to the PS4,just buy one and mario plus Zelda, plus some great RPGs like xenoblade chronicles 1 and 2 and torna and octopath traveler,be amazed by the quality and addictive games and you won't really want a ps5 with Spiderman miles Morales which will be a short game at around 8 hours that you could finish in a day or two, spend your 500 quid wisely,it's about the Games, not power...........

This is an incredible game. I was a huge fan of Mario 64 and enjoyed Galaxy. This is a pure nostalgia trip mixed with innovation and sheer joy. It feels to me like the spiritual successor of Mario 64.If you want to see and do it all, it's a surprisingly big game. I have sunk 35-45 hours into this easily and I am still at it. The 'story' part of the game is quite short, about one-third of the way through collecting things (the easy stuff) you can be done with that. If you play for just getting to the end of the story and final boss, it's a bit short. For me, Mario comes into its own when you try to reach every surface, collect every hidden item and know each zone down to fine details. This game has squeezed every ounce out of every world you visit, and a lot of the game opens up - new zones, challenges, hidden sections & more - after the main story is over (you still have about 65-70% of things left to collect and loads of new things to see). You get another new area at 50% complete then it's all about how much of a completionist you are.Level design, music, difficulty, range of tasks, exploration - it's all an absolute masterclass. Even if there is no power moon or special currency on that hard to reach surface, the game almost always rewards you with gold coins to acknowledge you've somehow made it to that hard to reach or hidden surface. I got this and Zelda BOTW at the same time and it's been this one that I've not been able to put down, because I find the tightly crafted worlds of Mario more immediately compelling. Add in the 2D sections, Yoshi, Captain Toad, Luigi sub-game, and new spins on a range of classic enemies that will take older Mario fans decades back down memory lane, it makes the whole thing complete. As a long time PS4 owner who decided to take the plunge on a Switch this is the best game I've played for years and I can't recommend it enough. I have about 15% left to do in this game before I can fully devote my attention to BOTW, but part of me will be very sad when this Odyssey is at its end!

I am still thoroughly enjoying my play-through with this even after completing it. The amount of content here is astounding with there feeling like there is next to no filler. Mario Odyssey is bursting with personality from the sound design, characters and the gorgeous transitional animations between actions! The new capture mechanic constantly switches up gameplay and replaces typical powerups with a drastic change of gameplay style with every new host and it's a genuinely fun thing to experiment with in each new Kingdom. The controls work fantastically with split Joy-Con which I found myself preferring over using the Pro-Controller because they work so well. Jumping, climbing, and over forms of platforming are absolutely enhanced by the subtle motion controls such as shaking just to gain that little bit of extra height.Pretty much all of the levels are amazing to look at with extremely original design and gorgeous visuals - the same goes for Mario and his many outfits you can gain through various means, all in-game. This is one of the best single-player experiences I have had in an extremely long time, barring Breath of the Wild - and in some ways I feel that Odyssey exceeds in certain places where Breath of the Wild did not despite both games being masterpieces. There are a few minigames that you can find throughout your playthrough with different scenarios to each of them - however this is one thing I would have very much liked to see fleshed out a little bit more. Namely, with the addition of local multiplayer with friends. The RC minigame, the footrace minigame, the snowball minigame all FEEL like they were made to be able to play with your friends but it just simply isn't possible. I feel they could have done a lot with a local multiplayer mode due to all the capture abilities you can get - similar to how you could switch hats in Mario 64 DS.

Gosh, where do I begin? This isn’t your typical video game for this age, this game is just fun. Silly, goofy fun, as games were always meant to be. I feel this game takes all the best parts of 64, Sunshine and both Galaxy games and combines them, adding in its own original flavour along the way. I haven’t had this much fun since Galaxy 2 which is 6 years old now. The story admittedly is a little short, taking me about 8-10 hours. But that only scratches the surface of what this game has for you to do. I’ve had this game a week and i’m only about 200 moons in, I have no idea how many I have left. People complain that since death only costs 10 coins, the game is too easy. Maybe so,but it also encourages experimentation and exploration. This game strikes the perfect balance between open world and classic Mario variety. The graphics are gorgeous and the gameplay is easy to learn but hard to master. The general moveset is the same as the Mario games mentioned earlier but Mario’s new companion, Cappy, opens up so much more opportunities. It can be a throwing weapon like a boomerang, a tool to unlock secrets, or you can use it to possess your enemies, using their unique abilities to your own advantage. All done just by pressing X/Y or flicking your wrist. I also love how self aware this game is, constantly throwing references from older games at you, even obscure ones only the most dedicated of fans would notice. There are also portions of each world that you must navigate while flattened against the wall, yourself downgraded to the Mario from ‘85. In a climate of gaming where everything has to have the biggest guns or the most cinematic storyline, gettibg a new, fulfilling Mario 3D platformers is a breath of fresh air, one that I’m planning on breathing for months to come, and look back on in another 20 years. Game of The Year 2017

Superb controls, graphics, sense of fun and variety of worlds/enemies.The character of Cappy adds a whole new way to play Mario through collecting items, reaching new places, controlling enemies and unlocking new pathways. This is a game for casual and intense gamers alike. The game includes many Easter Eggs for fans of the series.Any and all amiibo's can be used in this game; but Mario, Peach and Bowser (any variants; Wedding, Smash Bros or Super Mario) provide the greatest in game gameplay benefits.Amiibo are not required to complete the game, nor do they provide additional content, they simply unlock existing content quicker.Any amiibo that you may or may not have will assist gameplay greatly when used with “Uncle Amiibo”.Here, amiibo are used to uncover collectible locations on your map via an amiibo access point (Uncle Amiibo), but they can also grant players benefits with a random tap at any point within the game. Some of the more Mario related amiibo will unlock items that can be obtained by progressing through the game naturally anyway, so they (the amiibo) are not required for any specific amiibo-only content, but as mentioned above, the amiibo are extremely helpful - especially any variant of the Peach, Mario and Bowser amiibo's which assist in gameplay much more than any other amiibo. For Gameplay:All amiibo. For significant Gameplay enhancements:Mario (any variant)Peach (any variant)Bowser (any variant)For Unlocks (which can be obtained through the game anyway without amiibo):Mario (any variant)Luigi (any variant)Wario (any variant)WaluigiDr MarioDiddy Kong (any variant)As a fan:The game has so much to do, I have finished the game with 100% completion and enjoyed every second of it. It is not a game that you can easily complete to 100% in a day.

S-tier game on the switch. It's just so much fun- the level and world designs are great, tons of things to collect, a wide variety of mechanics and things to do and discover. Graphics look great as well. The bosses aren't particularly difficult- but this isn't an issue for me as the game is more about relaxing, chilling out and having fun, rather than tear your hair out type of gaming which I appreciate. For gamers who want a challenge, the last world offers plenty of that! The sandbox environment and all the mechanics means that for those who want a challenge, you can simply just self impose limitations- plenty of videos online of people doing this exact thing.Must also note that the 1st couple of days I played this game,I did experience feeling motion sickness, and couldn't play for very long. This is something that is noted by a fair number of players so if you suffer from extreme motion sickness, beware. For me, the feeling of motion sickness disappeared after the first couple of days though as I got used to it. But players HAVE noted that the way Nintendo does the camera system in SMO means that people genuinely can experience motion sickness.Other than that, the game is a must to be played on the full system where you can detach your joy-cons. It's technically playable on the Lite, but I'd heavily advise against. There are mechanics that are only available through shaking your joy-cons for example. Part of the fun of the game is making use of all the gesture controls to play.Genuinely one of the best games I've played. I've not met a single person who's played this game and hasn't enjoyed it.

Fun - That's exactly how I would describe this game.Nintendo have managed to create another Mario which pulls from it's past and makes the fan-boy in me excited with the prospect of further Mario titles to come (I hear there is free DLC coming which might include a brother!).There is enough challenges in this game to feel a sense of fulfilment once you complete a level, collect that damn seemingly elusive moon or beat a boss. However, there is also a real urge to do one better by collecting more items or coins to unlock outfits for your favourite protagonist. Who knew that Mario would become the fashion icon he is in 2017/2018?And who knew parading him in these outfits would bring simple joy?I played this game and I smiled a lot throughout and it had me thinking, I cannot remember the last time I played a single player game (please do not count having a friend play as cappy as multiplayer, it isn't, it's torture) where I actually laughed out loud as much or even just smiled.Well done Nintendo, all that is missing is a better multiplayer mode and larger levels. It's a game that ended too soon on the first play through

Fantastic game! Nintendo have managed to merge the old and the new in this title, giving us SNES and N64 era gamers a hit of nostalgia. Whilst not relying on it to hold up the rest of the game! The new mechanics related to your companion cappy are amazingly fun and open up opportunity for pretty advanced platforming techniques. Also the ability to possess the bodies of different enemies and allies makes for interesting and fresh game play.If I could deduct half a start for game length, if you're a looking for a prolonged and deep story this isn't the place to find it. The story is actually rather short. Anyone with the time to put in could finish it in a day or less.If you are a completionist though then the game has plenty of meat to offer! The games main collectables are moons, every kingdom has it's own challenges, mini-games and boss fights which all give out moons for the completionist to stick their teeth into.My final verdict is that Mario Odessey is the best Mario game since Mario 64, it even surpasses that game in multiple ways! A must have for every Nintendo gamer, casual and hard-core alike!

What can I say that likely hasn't been said before. I worried that this was going to be too short, but once the main story is done there's an entire set of stuff to be done that FAR exceeds the story. And the unlocks just KEEP. ON. COMING. It's like a torrent of mini achievements (which they've done in a Nintendo way in this game), and euphoria for each one. There's not one point I didn't feel a sense of achievement, as even when some of the collectibles seem ridiculously easy, there's always something to enjoy about it and something to work toward. Some of the reveals and larger unlocks later in the game are a NOSTALGIA TRIP TO DIE FOR. Literally they had be cracking up and almost brought a tear to my eye, taking me back 20 years to my childhood. This is an absolute masterpiece and I desperately hope they follow it up in the timeframe of Galaxy to Galaxy 2, or go the DLC route. Beyond recommended. A system seller. A no brainer. Other game companies take note (I'm looking at you Yooka Laylee); this is how you do a platform collectorthon. This is gaming at its finest. Simply sublime

FINALLY. This is the Mario we've been waiting for, for so long!I'm so glad Nintendo has finally stopped flogging the dead horse of the "classic" Mario theme (side-scrolling, time-limited, flagpole-jumping silliness) and given us a proper game. This rivals Mario 64 as the best game in the series. The Galaxy games were also very good, and Sunshine was a lovely little number, but then they just bombarded us with homages to the original games. This is such a breath of fresh air, and it looks amazing. The game play is wonderful; so open and varied. The added cap-possessing ability is actually really good, and doesn't get boring, like I thought it might.Who doesn't want to take control of a T-Rex and go on a block-smashing rampage?!The game is massive, and each world is beautifully designed. Some aren't as aesthetically pleasing as others (the one with the humans is a bit odd) but each world is large and full enough to keep you busy for a long time.All-in-all, this is a fantastic game, and a definite must-have for anyone who owns a Switch.

I think one thing most of the best Mario games have in common is they're all slightly broken. By this I mean a canny player can find shortcuts and use techniques to skip or more easily beat parts of a game. This is a tradition started by the very first Super Mario game with Warp Zones and various exploits for extra lives. It was continued with Super Mario World by being able to take Yoshi into most levels or skip most of the game using Star World. Mario 64 got in on the action too with all sorts of ways to complete each objective.Odyssey continues this proud tradition, the amusing thing is the developers know what players are like too, and often reward them with piles of coins for reaching supposedly "inaccessible" places. The variety of levels and objectives in this game mean you'll never get bored.Definitely one of the best games on the Switch (or anywhere else) and sits proudly alongside games like Mario World and Mario 64 as one of the best Mario games ever.

.... Well I'm happy I purchased my Switch at launch, first came Zelda, it did have it's flaws however I thoroughly enjoyed the game and traversing through the magical word. However Nintendo has delivered again with Odyssey, Mario Odyssey feels so alive with the massively fun and fluid movement! It brings me back to when M64 was released and being amazed with the movement in general. The world is magical and alive with hundreds of hidden puzzles and hidden gems, the core game/story is a little easy however if you drill down and try to collect all the collectables in each worlds the puzzles can be quite difficult. I'm really happy with the game and would recommend everyone who has or was thinking to get a Switch to pick it up due to this masterpiece! The game has tons of re-play value as he movement and worlds are fun and exciting, I can't wait also to see the competitive speed run side also as there's tons of cool tricks you can pull like every Mario game!

It's a great game but it's a bit of a culture shock if you are used to the likes of Galaxy or 3D World. There are loads of moons to find, some are just there and some have some interesting stages to find and complete before you get them. My biggest gripe is that I have no great desire to find them all. It has been fun to try for total completion in most previous Mario games (often frustrating, but still fun). In Odyssey, I feel like I really should find them all but it's more of a chore than something I'm excited about. The most tedious tasks are the ones that involve scouring the map for items and taking them to a certain point (herding sheep, growing seeds, etc). Now it sounds like I don't like the game but I did have a lot of fun playing through it, especially in the later levels (kingdoms). All Mario fans should buy this but don't necessarily expect the perfect game that it is being proclaimed to be by so many people. I would give 4.5 if I could.

This is a great game and am only half way through it within 36 hours of it popping through my letterbox.I've tried this in handheld mode and with the joy cons separately. I prefer handheld. The motion controls are good but nothing in comparison to super Mario galaxy ( if you old enough to play it) a slight set back.It reminds me a lot of 64 and Sunshine games. It surprises you in a way that you don't have to reach for a manual or a YouTube video to get where you need to be (or get). It's very intutive, graphically stunning, it's all very fancy and you will enjoy on your own or watching your kids play it.This is my absolute 3rd 3d Mario. I don't think anything will ever surpass Super Mario Galaxy (my number 1)or Super Mario 64 for shear aweness but it is pretty dam good third !It is well worth your ££.And btw if what the news is today4/4/2020 about a remake of galaxy and 64 for switch I urge you to purchase these as well as this.
