The days when all you got with a flash drive was storage space seem a long way off; now, manufacturers are bundling all kind of software with their drives, some of it quite useful but some of it not. Lexar has jumped (pun intended) on the bandwagon with its JumpDrive S70, a USB flash drive with a retractable USB connector (so no cap to lose) that comes with the company's Secure II software pre-installed. In all other respects, the Lexar is a fairly run-of-the-mill device, with a plastic housing and 14.6GB of available space when new.Although software bundled on my other USB drives can be opened using the Windows 7 `Autoplay' function, what I found was that the option to open the Secure II software was missing when I popped the JumpDrive into my PC,with only the standard USB options (`open folder', `use drive for backup' and `speed up system' available in the menu - I needed to open the drive and then rummage about in its directories to find the Secure II program to run it directly. I'm told that this is a restriction in Windows 7 and not the fault of the drive itself, but it's still a bit of a pain.Secure II isn't as comprehensive as some, but it does incorporate a file shredder that allows you to securely shred data both on the drive itself and on the PC the drive is connected to. There's zero in the way of shredding options so I have no idea how well files shredded using the software are actually erased. In truth, there are better, free shredding programs out there, you just have to search for them.Secure II also includes two file encryption sections, one of which allows you to encrypt and decrypt selected files both on the drive and on your PC using 256-bit AES encryption. The other secures all, or just selected, files on the drive by segregating them into `vaults' on the drive, which are effectively areas screened off from the rest of the drive and secured using different passwords. You can set up vaults as you please, so one could be kept for your work, one for your semi-confidential work, and one for your personal files. It's a different, and welcome, take on other secure drives, which typically have one password securing the entire contents of the drive.Using the H2testw speed test program, read speeds on the Lexar with came back at 20.6 MByte/s, while write speeds clocked at 8.63 MByte/s. To put that into perspective, a 4GB movie file takes about 8 minutes to write to the drive. Not the fastest I've seen, but still pretty good, and better than most other flash drives I have.Purely as a USB flash drive, the JumpDrive S70 is pretty standard fare - the retractable USB connector is a nice touch but the plastic casing feels slightly less-than-secure. The Secure II software is good, but you can get free software of the same or better calibre free from the `net. So, if you need a 16GB flash drive then the JumpDrive is a good choice, just don't buy it purely for the bundled software.

There's probably a law named after somebody about how computer storage takes up less space and gets cheaper. It really doesn't seem that long ago that we moved from 5 1/4 inch floppy disks to 3 1/2 inch - with a consequent doubling of memory from 360 kilobytes to 720 kilobytes. The format was inconvenient, prone to corruption, and required a drive. Is anybody still using computers with a floppy disk drive, I wonder? This baby has a capacity of 16 GB - that's something like 20,000 floppy disks' worth of storage capacity. Or, since nobody these days is likely to have boxes full of floppy disks these days, over three DVDs' worth of memory. And it plugs into a USB port. It doesn't easily get corrupted or scratched,it's likely to work in any computer with any operating system you can find, and it's fast. It's pretty common for people to "lug" one of these around all the time - it's as easy to use one as is it is to email stuff around, and the biggest problem is likely to be getting it lost in your handbag. I can't say I did a formal benchmark test, but the computers we tested it in were able to get stuff on and off it with little delay, and pretty quickly. The only issue I had with it was with the blue "cover" - a separate plastic sleeve which doesn't quite cover the end. I'm not sure what function it's supposed to serve, but whatever it is, it's unconvincing. A "pen-lid" style cover would have been preferable. Other than that, wonderful.

Retractable USB flash drives are now quite common and with so many out there it is very easy to be blasé about their looks and shape however this Lexar jumpdrive really jumps out at you (pun intended) with its elegant shape ! The retractable mechanism is a little stiffer than the Integral Slide white flash drive. The top part of the drive is just like in the product picture but the sides and the bottom are white and it has a curved back unlike other flash drives that are rectangular , have a flat backside and have sharp corners. This design is unique and elegant and really makes this drive very appealing !This jumpdrive has one of the most distinctive LED lights I have seen !The LED light is red and has a triangle shape pointing to the front of the drive and flashes in brief pulses when data is being written to the drive. Performance wise this drive averaged 5.22 Mb/s when I was transferring files to it . I am willing to forgive the slow write speed because of its elegant shape , looks and distinctive LED light ! This is a really pretty drive to have , if looks are a more important factor in your choice of flash drives rather than write speed then I would most certainly recommend this drive !

It's difficult to write a meaningful review of a USB drive. In my own unscientific testing (copying about 3GB of music files onto the drive, then copying them back off again) it produced write speeds of about 5.6MB/second and read speeds of about 20-23MB/second. It's certainly fast enough for the sort of file transfers a USB drive is normally used for, and the write speed results suggest that supporting USB 3 would not have made the drive any faster. The design of it is pretty nice, and a bit different. The sliding cap was very stiff at first, but being plastic it has loosened slightly with light use and is now fine. It works fine on Windows, OS X and Linux (not that there's any reason it shouldn't)and thankfully doesn't come with any of the 'utilities' that some other manufacturers clutter the drives with.As someone just old enough to remember floppy discs, carrying 16GB of capacity in such a small drive does still have some novelty value, and to be honest 16GB is about as much capacity as you need in a USB drive. If you're transferring more data than that in one go, you'll probably want to use a portable hard drive with USB 3 support, just to cut down on the transfer time.

Bought this to be used as a USB source for time shift for a smart TV so this influences this review. On receipt, I tested out performance on my Mac with USB 3.0. A large 960Mb file transferred in just under 18 seconds so pretty much on the advertised write speed of 55Mb/sec. I didn't time the read speed but copying the file back was approximately twice as quick so I think the advertised speeds of 100Mb/sec & 55Mb/sec for read and write are spot on.Now as others have mentioned, the casing of the drive is plastic including the USB connector and it does feel flimsy to the touch. This lightweight build quality and flex may actually allow the device to survive all but the hardest of knocks, all I know is I wouldn't feel too confident carrying this on a keyring. That brings me back to my reason for purchase. This is now plugged into my Samsung Smart TV for recording purposes and therefore will not be removed or carried with any kind of regularity. Performance for this function is great but I have knocked it down one star as I think the build quality does limit the practical uses of this device.Great performance for the money though.

I had used Lexar before and had no problems with it. So I decided to get this one in 64GB as I wanted to transfer not such letter and report files but also photos, pictures and movies in that require a lot of memory storage that usually 64GB is the best average size available. Although you can buy a bigger 128GB with a couple of extra money. This one works OK and I had no trouble transferring files from one computer to another. This can work on PC and Mac very easily and the size, shape and fitting makes it easier to connect on USB. I prefer this style of USB Stick as it does not have the fragile button to open the USB port that you would find in most modern USB sticks and that it turns andlocks with ease means that the connection port is safely tucked inside the covering when not in use and is easily accessible when you need to use it. This design and simple and easy and the larger size means it good not to be lost compared to the really smaller versions and I could not ask for anything better.

I usually use my Sandisk Cruizers but this little fella landed on my doorstep so i thought id give it a try.First off i was a little confused by the info, "High-Speed" usb is a broad description and varies depending on the company who makes it. So i wasn't expecting break-neck transfer speeds. To look at its small, about an inch long or just over. It has a small plastic cover which slides back, not smoothly i might note, this reveals the usb connector. It's also very light.During transfers you will get a blinking red LED light which is built within the unit, so it shines through the plastic. I tested this on a USB 3.0 socket and got around 9.2mbs when transfering HD content to it.So its not too bad speed wise, i remember getting about 4mbs on some USB 2.0 devices so im quite pleased with it.Overall its pretty good value for money, im not keen on the sliding cover but other than theres nothing much to complain about!

It seems fast to me for a USB 3.0 flash drive, but my test was inconclusive. According to the packaging, the write speed (55 MB/s) for the 128GB drive is almost 3X the speed of their USB3.0 32GB drive (20 MB/s).The slider has a very positive feel to it: just as it's about to reach the maximum extension, there's a click to indicate that the metal stub is locked into position. And the stub won't accidentally retract like a couple SanDisk drives did to me.It has an activity light, but the 'loop' to put a tag on it (no key chain possible!) is very tight, if that's important to you.The build feels very sturdy to me, but only time (like with all flash drives) will tell how robust it really is.No reason to think otherwise at this point. I'm very happy with the Lexar.

I am not sure what I can say about this USB stick expect that it does exactly what you expect it to. I simply plugged it into my laptop and copied my files to the drive without any problems. There is a red light on the USB stick which flashes when it is busy so you know when it's okay to remove it. I have a Macbook Pro and there were no problems with compatibility. I did not use the software as I had no need of it, but there were Mac files on the stick so I assume there wouldn't be a problem. The best thing about this USB is the design as you simply slide the stick out so you don't have to have a separate cap which inevitably falls off in your handbag. This is an excellent product at an affordable price.

A great thumb drive, 16GB of fast storage, using it to store a few movies at a time to play on my home theatre system, makes copying the movies from my external USB 3.0 hard drive to this via a 2012 Mac Mini much quicker than when I was using USB 2.0. I do see what the other reviewers meant by the poor mechanism, rather than sliding smoothly, it's more of a press, slide release, which does make it feel cheap. The overall build quality is fair for something of this proc but I can't say it'd survive well if I were to put it on my keychain with some others.

I've had quite a few memory sticks in my time and this is pretty much like all the others. I do like how when data is being sent to the memory stick a red light flashes letting you know. However I must say I thought the protective cap was hard to get off and perhaps borders on unnecessary.I understand you need to protect the connection but surely there's an easier way than a cap which is length of nearly half the stick? I'm only using the stick to keep back ups of word files on and have had no problems whatsoever with saving and retrieving the data.

A lot of critical reviews about this but i think it's not as bad as it looks. To me it feels strong and not that fragile that fall into pieces, the speed is good enough for USB 2.0 flash drive and i have no problems with it working in windows 7, 8 & Mac OS. So all in all, a good flash drive with plenty of storage, a good enough and for the money you can not go wrong. The only thing i found was i couldn't find the security software on the JumpDrive but after looking on the official website, i manage to download the software from there.

I have a few of these Lexar Jumpdrives in various capacities. The all-plastic construction seem robust and the slide mechanism to extend the USB port is positive and solid. The colour coding of the different capacities is also useful if you have a few of them. There's a useful lanyard eyelet although no lanyard supplied.Transfer speeds are good when using a USB 3 port and still decent using USB 2. It's lightweight and robust and doesn't have any gimmicks like you see on some similarly priced drives.Great product.

This is a great little USB. Its easy to connect to almost every USB port, runs perfectly, and has a very hand "lock" system on the top which allows the "stick" part to retract - keeping the device and all saved data safe. The 16Gb memory is also very handy for storing large files, videos, music, or general data.At the end of the day, its a USB - its not ground breaking technology but for memory you get for the price, this is a very good one to buy.

Crazy value for money, and a very reliable little memory stick. It has respectable data transfer rates. I do not leave the house without it! The only issue with it is the lid isnt that durable, it brings the build quality down a little in my books.I previously owned the smaller sized version of this stick, which had a different lid, which was much worse, so i guess they've made an improvement... but they've still not hit the nail on the head
