On the face of it, the DT101G2 is nothing more than a plastic-looking, plastic-feeling USB flash drive, with a metal cover that swivels to cover the end of the drive but leaves the sides exposed to lint, grit and anything else you might have in your pocket. The Kingston isn't particularly sturdy, and it's the one drive I own that I wouldn't want to carry with keys or change.Using the h2test2 speed test program gave me a write speed to the drive of 4.22 Mb/s - not terrible but a bit slower than I was expecting. The Kingston is by no means the fastest of USB drives I've ever tried but seeing as I only use it to perform the odd back-up now and then, speed isn't too much of a problem for me.Just bear it in mind if you intend using the drive for regularly moving large files. But appearances and speed aside, where the DT101G2 begins to impress is in the software Kingston has included on it - some of which, I admit, you may find pointless, but some of which you may find of use. When you first insert the drive into a Windows 7 machine (I assume XP and Vista will be similar), you get the standard autoplay options popup, asking you what you want to do with the device. Although you can simply open it up to explore the contents, you also get the option to start Kingston's urDrive software, which allows you to do much more with it. Just note here that, for some reason, the software won't run properly if you have an SD card or similar inserted into the card slot on your PC at the same time as you start urDrive.urDrive is a single-window interface, giving you access to programs pre-installed on the drive. These include the Maxthon 3 web browser (a surprisingly good browser that I recommend you at least try), Norton PC Checkup system performance checker, a free 2GB online back-up storage solution and a music player. urDrive also gives you access to a mass of other downloadable applications such as games, music and video utilities, and productivity applications (paid-for and free), which are all available from the urAppZone, which is itself accessible directly from the drive - very handy if you need a program on-the-fly and don't have access to your own PC.urDrive also lets you view and manage the photos, music and videos on your drive, and as you click on each of the media buttons in urDrive it sets up dedicated folders for each. In truth most of this is pretty superfluous and probably not of much interest to the majority of people, but I can see people living out of airports or hotel rooms making use of it - after all, having your own self-personalised browser and dedicated suite of applications wherever you go could be quite a bonus. Just note that the Kingston doesn't come with any password-protection software built into it, so you should be careful not to leave it lying around in a public place - slightly disappointing given its seeming target market.I bought the Kingston simply to back-up the photos on my PC, not realising that it came with urDrive (or, indeed, any other software) installed. Knowing that the software was on it wouldn't have affected my decision to buy it one way or the other as I only need the drive to perform the most basic of tasks, but it's nice to have it there, as long as you don't mind losing some disk space. The only downside is that I would have expected the drive to be a little more robust (physically and security-wise) when it's seemingly aimed at travellers and those on the go.

The first thing which struck me about this very nice looking flash drive is how tiny it actually is, far smaller than I'd expected, at only about an inch long (or roughly one-third the size of my old 8GB ByteStor drive).Although advertised as a 16 GB device, once formatted (it comes pre-formatted as FAT32) it provides less than 15 GB of storage. 92MB of this is taken up by the Windows XP "ur drive" software (useless to me, running Windows 9x). Some users have reportedly had difficulty removing this, to reclaim the wasted space; but in Windows ME it deleted without any problem. I didn't even need to use the Uninstall utility which comes with it.This USB device is not compatible with Windows 98 or 98SE,as it doesn't include a Windows 98 driver file (although it *might* work using one of the "generic" mass storage drivers for Windows 98 available on-line, but I haven't tested this as I'm using Windows ME).However, it works okay in Windows ME (which has its own built-in mass storage drivers for USB flash storage devices), and in Windows XP. In fact it worked straight from the box in Windows ME; Windows detected it at boot up, and installed a mass storage driver for it.It's backwards-compatible, in that it will function in a USB 1.1 port (at USB 1.1 speed), as well as in a USB 2.0 port as advertised (where it will work at the faster USB 2.0 speed), though you might not want to use such a large drive in a USB 1.1 port except in an emergency, as USB 1.1 gives very slow data transfer speeds. In USB 2.0 its access speed is good. At best I was seeing a 21 MB file written to the drive in about 2 seconds, though larger files were slower. A 35 MB file could take up to 10 seconds. The packaging includes notes pointing out that speed will depend partly on what else the computer is doing, and how it's configured. It took me about an hour to transfer 250 files totalling 10 GB onto the device, a speed I was quite happy with, at this price. Read speeds were about twice as fast as write speeds. You can buy faster devices, but they cost nearly twice as much. And as a home user, I'll only occasionally have to load large amounts of files onto the device, so I think this is a real bargain.

It appears that everyone in this day and age expects everything to be instant, right now, this minute and without delay. What do we do with the 10 milliseconds we save when we use one product rather than another? Gosh you might even save 3 seconds a month so don't use them all at once. Well, sorry to disappoint you but even the fastest flash drives take a bit of time to do their thing.Loading up 16GB will take a little time so why not put the time to good use have a cup of tea, pour a glass of wine, or if you are in a rush and late consider starting a little earlier next time.Back to the product. I used this to store a system backup on a new laptop computer that the manufacturers did not supply with back up discs.Easy enough to do. I didn't have to wait around too long for the task to be completed and yes I had a cup of tea while I waited. It was quick enough for me (an 9 GB backup). It was quick and a check of the back up files showed it was accurate and working. Kingston are generally very good.It will also work in most USB sockets except for the new USB 3 which not many people have because it is so new and has a different socket. It is very quick actually but has a minor but significant flaw. The built in swivel case that protects the USB socket is strong enough for the odd knock or drop. However the swivel is loose and can be easily pushed aside. It could do with a positive 'click lock' to keep it in place. Also it will NOT protect the socket from pocket fluff, biscuit crumbs, crushed peanuts and other small detritus that may find it's way into your pocket and then into the socket of your computer. If you tend to carry these round in your pocket get the equivalent with a proper cap. Best to keep this on on the desk or in a separate pouch.Pro's;QuickLooks niceGood value and priceCon's;Flawed portability

I am moving to a new computer soon and wanted to park a copy of My Documents and Favourites out of harm's way. I read the reviews kindly left about this drive by other people, for which many thanks! I noticed the advice about uninstalling UR Drive and /or deleting superfluous software.I am somewhat nervous of mechanical devices, but it was recognized instantly and became "Ur Drive F". I opened it and wondered what possible harm can happen if I right-click on it. I got "format" among other options. Left-clicking that, I got a stern message that should I proceed I would be deleting a lot of software."Really?!" said I, rather pleasantly surprised, and proceeded. Now it appears as KINGSTON DRIVE F,performs immaculately, and when I click "eject" it becomes "a removable disk". Perfect! If I may be allowed to contribute a slightly frivolous point with a serious intent: like many other contributors before me, I noticed how very TINY this USB Drive is - on my desk it could and would easily disappear without trace caught in some papers, as to what will become of it mixed with a bunch of keys at the bottom of my handbag, I dread to think.Staring at it with my Art @ Design hat on, I saw that it looks just like a stylish piece of modern jewellry, i.e. a pendant. So I got one of those black silk cords people use for handmade pendants these days, removed one end of the simple clasp, threaded the black silk cord through the little ear (you have to encourage it a bit, but if I can do it, you can do it), replaced the clasp end and TA-DA! Firstly, with that cord on, there is no way it gets lost on my desk. Secondly, it looks very Matrix with a black T-shirt or polo neck. Now I am waiting for the first techie lad who says, "Hey, lady, do you know what that thing is?" In Mid-Wales we look forward to simple joys...

The void being the space in my brain meant for the assimilation and permanent storage of information technology. For some reason I cannot explain, a great deal of information regarding my PC and it's software issues goes through the portal leading to my grey matter but zero is assimilated or retained in storage. The reason for buying a 'Kingston DataTraveler 101 Gen 2 USB Drive' was in response to various members of my family (erstwhile aspiring computer geeks) saying I was mad not to back-up what was on my PC. Not wanting to appear a complete I T nincompoop, I asked how could I do this spurious sounding requirement and was told "Get a memory stick and shove it up your USB"!Hence my purchase of this accessory.I did as they said and inserted this innocuous looking piece of computer periphery in the hole specified, followed the screen instructions, and lo and behold eventually screen read that the task had been completed. Wow, I had done it, alone and without a pain killing injection or safety net. All that remains to be proven is if my PC crashes losing everything, will it all be on that tiny innocent looking stick?I do hope so but if not I might have to revise my 5 star rating.POSTSCRIPT My son-in-law has today confirmed that on checking this USB stick thingamy on the drives section of My Computer, it shows that all files were successfully backed-up and, therefore, the 5 star rating is well deserved, if only for the fact that it is capable of being used by a silver-haired computer ne'er-do-well.

Having played with this flash drive for a while, and remembering my high school computer classes, I wanted to cover two little points:A) CapacityI noticed that Windows shows that the capacity of this flash drive is slightly less than 15 GB (Gigabytes) and not 16 GB as advertised! But instead of cursing an American company for imitating the Chinese in making cheap electronics (Kingston is US of A based) I remembered one thing... some space is lost to formatting. I picked the FAT 32 format which is recommended for compatibility with the latest electronics, such as widescreen tellys. Also, Kingston, and all other manufacturers of flash drives, define a gigabyte as 1000 Megabytes - but computers dream in binary (and Windows does too)so for them a gigabyte is 1024 Megabytes! This means that some space is "defined away".B) SpeedI noticed other Amazon contributors were complaining about the speed of this thing and I wanted to test it myself, as I initially found the drive a tad slow when copying several movie files. I downloaded a freebie program known as CrystalDiskMark which lets you run a simple speed test. I got a read speed of 22.35 MB/s which is decent enough in my opinion! It will read your typical movie file in less than a minute. But if it is not Roadrunner fast for you, then you can always keep it as some kind of trinket to admire (your precious), or turn it into a piece of personal jewellery...

The average speed for writing is 4.96mb/s in FAT32 format with 16KB allocation unit size. It's by default formatted in FAT32 and there is 14,9GB of free space at your disposal, that is when you uninstall the pointless "urdrive" software. I still have it in FAT32 with 16kb clusters because I'm using it with my PS3 and it only reads FAT32. If you're only using it with Windows XP or higher I recommend you format it to either NTFS or exFAT for better performance with larger files. The read speed is fairly good, it oscillates at around 22mb/s. Now physically it's quite small but handy and looks solid enough for a usb stick. The design is not super awesome nor cheap, just okay.I'm not sure how well will the turning cover last but it seems okay as well.UPDATE: After over year it's still good as new, I formatted it about a billion times cause I like NTFS but some platforms such as PS3 only take FAT 32 and at the same time it was in my wallet throught the whole year. It was dropped into water, sand on the beach, lost on the bus (and found) and accidentally kicked several times. So I can say that it's quite durable inspite of its kind of cheap feel ;) But now I'll be shopping around for USB 3.0 <64GB stick as a replacement for this, mainly for speed and somewhat for storage space.

I cannot add anything more to the existing review. I've been using it for the past several months and I have to say that this USB Drive is perfect, and the build quality is very good. The only problem I have is that the attachment hole is actually very small (as has been noted elsewhere) - but then again that may not be a problem for you. Comparing to some other USB flash drives, transferring data to it is not the fastest there is but reading from it is not a problem - so bear that in mind while ordering (this is not a problem for me though). I'm using it for unattended installation of Windows 7 and data transfer - and this device is perfect for that. Also Windows 7 x32 (or x64 bit)doesn't have any problems with recognising the drive. The OS will simply use the next available drive letter to map this device. Format it first though (you don't want to keep any "junk" that's there anyway) -> as soon as OS will connect and recognise it, right click on the drive and select "Format" from the drop down menu -> chose "quick format" and accept any default other options. After that the device should be ready to use. Anyway, this is a recommended product with acceptable price tag.

Just recieved mine this morning (this being monday) but i expected to recieve it last friday but meh got here in the end. Ive just had it copying over 4Gbs worth of saved files on my other old USB stick and the write speed of this thing is anything but short of jaw dropping. my Patriot X-mini transfers files at about 3-5Mbp/s on a good day but this Kingston goes way beyond that (to the frontier and back perhaps? certainly seems capable of warp speeds!!) and I had everything copied over in a matter of minutes. The product is and looks very plasticky and possibly very brittle unfortunately. it seems pretty solid but i dont think it would fair too well if you sat on it, it would most definitely snap in half.so make sure you dont keep it in your back pockets. and lastly dont smack it against anything hard otherwise you'l find yourself ordering a new one in no-time.theres only one slight niggle I have with this product is that it doesnt come with a lanyard but for the price I payed for this, i dont really mind as lanyards can be bought very cheaply.

The Kingston Data Traveler is a neat little gadget that works exactly as it is meant to.I own about five of these pen drives now or perhaps I should say the family does. They are useful for almost everything. I use them to carry work files and photos and my kids use them for school projects, photos, music etc - they are perfect for transferring information from PC to laptop and with a 16GB capacity you will rarely find yourself short of storage space.I even have a few that hold permanent data that I need for work. They are almost inconspicuous tucked into a work folder. I've been using Kingston for over a year now without any problems. I have yet to have a file corrupted or the data fail to read.I'm sure it will happen eventually but to date I'm very impressed with this product. So in short I have no negatives for this product - they are sturdy and reliable. Mine has taken any number of knocks and drops and is still going strong. The next time I need a pen drive, I won't be looking beyond the Kingston Data Traveler.

I have had no problems getting this recognised on all my computers (Windows vista 32 bit and Windows 7 66 bit variants). The first time I used this stick on a win 7 laptop, it took ages to copy about 6 GB of files. I was very unhappy. I even came over to check reviews because I bought due to its good reviews. I found that the majority of reviewers wgave it a thumbs up so i thought something on my computer may have gone bersek. Even the transfer to another laptop was not heart-warming. Well I now copy and transfer files quickly. I have a tendency of hybernating my Laptops (sometimes foor several days) so that I can resume my projects faster without having to relauch my Development web/mail server and IDEs.So I switched them off and when i rebooted the USB drive was working faster and I had some other issues dissapear as well. This is a great memory stick and the bult seems will last for several years as it feels really durable plus it is beautiful (or is it handsome). 5 Star and highly recommended.

*I did not buy from amazon but I have the exact same product.*Small, cheap, light and durable. Aside from the speed, what more could you ask for?The speed is not the best out there but keep in mind that this drive is at least 4years+ old. (~4-5MB/s) I formatted this drive into NTFS right away to get rid of the 4GB file size limit from FAT32.What I like more than the speed though is the durability. I accidentally throw this into the washing machine while it's still in my trouser pocket. The light that usually comes on when device is in use no longer works but the drive still functions perfectly fine, still getting the same speeds and the same total storage. One thing to note with this though is that the glue holding the casing together for washed away by the washing machine (lol) and this doesn't hold anymore. Now I can access the interior of the drive even if I don't want to. Even though this is the case (puns puns everywhere), the G2 still holds together thanks to the metal swivel arm.

I probably should've made this review a while ago but I suppose doing it now gives it even more weight.I bought this memory stick for £6.29 if I remember correctly. I must've had it now for about 3 or 4 years and it is still working perfectly, which has shocked me. £6 for a 16GB memory stick was surprising at the time and I didn't expect much from it, but I have it plugged into my MacBook now as I do my coursework and it has been put to the test. It's been filled up and wiped time and time again, it's fallen and been dropped and carried carelessly in my school bags, college bags and my guitar bags and cases for years and it is still as good as any other memory stick i've ever used.Absolutely recommend this for anyone moving data around from different devices, it's worked with every PC, Mac or laptop i've ever used and it has worked with games consoles and USB stereos and car stereos too. Can't go wrong, especially seeing it is now just under £5.

I really reccomend this device, (16 gb version atleast) First of all I reccomend buying it now as it's gone down to 10£ (roughly $15.60) Anyways, First of all when I bought this, I thought how cheap it was, was too good to be true, I thought maybe there would be a major/minor catch to it, Like it being really slow at writing data, but suprisingly when it comes to writing data on the device, it's not half bad. Me personally I don't really need it to write data fast, But I knew it's rather important for other people. One really minor catch I noticed is that you cant really attach it to something e.g. to a backpack or something. But again that's not really important to me. I also like the way it looks,it's not not heavy at all, its small, and its got a nice little cover to protect the actual socket. This USB stick is useful/handy for many different things and has a very few minor catches, and I defintely reccomend buying this device.

I ordered the Kingston Data Traveller 101 Gen 2 16 GB - which arrived shortly afterwards. I then loaded jpeg photographs and video clips onto it and checked that all had been recorded. Some time later after using it again I put it in my shirt pocket intending to place it in the drawer next to my computer. I was then distracted and forgot to replace it. This evening my wife presented me with the Kingston Traveller saying that she had found it in the washing machine. It has obviously been through an entire wash cycle including the drying phase. I was very upset as I was certain that I had lost all my data and that it had been ruined beyond repair. Before throwing it away I decided to just see if it still worked - lo and behold - all the information was there and I was still able to load more data on to it !! I don't think a more stringent test could be devised, so I can highly recommend this robust and "indestructible" product.
