"Lego Harry Potter: Episodes 1-4" has taken a very tounge-in cheek approach to the Harry Potter saga, which, for an aivd Potter fan like myself, is really entertaining. Watching certain clip-sequences I found myself actually laughing out loud!I believe this game encompasses aspects of gameplay that were missing from the previous Harry Potter EA Games. An example of this; rather than performing as Harry during a Quidditch match, you're in the audience controlling Ron and Hermione through the labyrinthine stadium to catch the perpitrators that are causing Harry trouble. You also get to explore places like Platform 9(3/4) and Hogsmeade. Furthermore, you can cast a lot more spells from an enourmous library of selections (some of which you learn through out the 4 years of Hogwarts, others of which you can buy at Diagon Alley using the Lego-currency you collect through out the game.)Hogwarts is very different this time round. TT have re-created the castle and made it completely their own, not forgetting to add a fair few key-destinations from the films. But generally, its layout is totally re-invented. It's not as open as I hoped it would be, but it is still pretty vast with ALOT of different places to see. Exploration of the castle during gameplay is pretty limited as you are following Nearly Headless Nick to get to your lessons and the next level alot of the time (but you can replay levels and explore alot better in "freeplay mode" later on.)Generally, the story of Harry's first 4 years of Hogwarts are followed pretty well with some rather entertaining bonuses - like santa hats at Christmas and screaming fans chasing Gilderoy Lockhart around Hogwarts grounds. There is also an impressive change of mood as the years progress. By the third year, the tone becomes noticably darker and much less golden as the previous years. Furthermore, students can be found cowering about the castle in fear of the dementors. My only single criticism is that the storymode moves at a very quick pace. (By the second or third level on Harry's first year, you're facing the "pea-brain" troll in the girl's bathroom!)If you're a big "Harry Potter" and/or "TT Lego Game" fan and are looking for something extra to add to the collection - I assure you this one is a must-buy! For those rather unfamiliar with the Potter franchise, I think the plotlines might become a little confusing to follow at times (because the Lego character's communicate through grunts and shouts - so there is no clear vocal-narrative.) But otherwise, the game is really fun - albeit pretty easy - to play. (For the regular gamer, this shouldn't take long to complete at all. One day at the most.) I have very little critcism of this game - it really is fun to play. With the promise of revisiting levels in freeplay as different characters to unlock bonuses, this is deffinately a game I won't be getting bored of in a hurry!

A great game for any one who loves Harry potter. I have played and own most of the Lego games that have been released. This one is even better than my previous favourite Lego starwars. It's quick and easy to pick up. Children aged 8 had as much fun as a 65 year old. My only qualm with this game is that the camera angles can be a bit annoying on certain levels. It would be nice to be able to rotate them a bit more than allowed. Despite this, the way the screen splits and returns to single screen is very good and it's quite easy to wander around the opposite ends of a map without annoying the other person playing. As with all Lego games you can unlock characters to buy.Downside with this game is that it takes so long to scroll through the characters to buy. There are about 70 characters, and if you have unlocked a character number 68 you have to slowly scroll through 67 other characters before you get to the one you want.Using spells is easy, and if you are unsure of what spell to use, you can target the item you want to use a spell on and it should automatically use the correct spell. This takes longer than just pointing your wand and firing in a general direction, but it can be good if you don't want the hassle of using the spell wheel.Due to reviews stating that blocks didn't appear if you didn't complete the game in the correct order, we ended up sticking to the story and going back to replay levels later to complete everything. It did take a little bit of fun away not wanting to explore because of reported glitches, but I was happy to note that none of these effected our game play. There is a nice feature that allows you to create a Lego version of yourself ", or anyone in fact, and you can play as that character when ever you drink the polyjuice potion. There are loads of minigames which are fun to play on (found in gringotts bank). The first level gives you the opportunity to play a Lego football match, drive the knight bus and explore a Lego village.Thoroughly recommend to anyone. The few small flaws it has you become used to almost immediately and soon don't even realise them. If you like this try checking out Lego starwars too.

Having played all of the previous LEGO games, I was very excited when I heard that a Harry Potter version was being released. I bought my copy on the day of release, and once I had started playing it, I couldn't put it down! The gameplay is very similar to all the other Lego games, but with the addition of being able to cycle through different spells once you progress through the story and learn them. This game is very charming - anyone who is a fan of the Harry Potter series will notice all the quirky little jokes and animations referring back to the original books and films! Little things like how differently each character walks and holds their wands when their about to attack - Ron, for example, looks absolutely terrified whenever you play as him and have to cast a spell at an object. Hermione is really rubbish at flying a broom - it's so cute and funny. Kids and adults alike will really love this.Graphics wise, Lego Harry Potter is the same as it's predescesors - simple yet colourful characters and environments. Most things you encounter in the game are made of Lego, and are based on the existing Lego Harry Potter toy series. Each of the 4 years has 6 levels, which cover most of the big events that happen in the films. Once you have completed the story, ( which is actually quite short ) you can go back and free play any of the previous levels to collect anything you have missed. This gives you a lot of freedom, and gives the game a lot of hours of gameplay if you plan on completing it to 100% - which is no easy feat! There are over 160 playable characters to unlock and collect which include all the main characters as well as the lesser known ones, including muggles. You can even eventually unlock Voldemort - who is awesome to play as.All in all, this is a great game. I think it is the best Lego game so far, along with the original Lego Star Wars - but I found it slightly less challenging. This may be because it is aimed more towards a younger audience though. I am 21, but I still found this game very enjoyable to play! It has taken me just over a week to fully complete the game to 100%. I highly recommend it.

It's a new direction for Lego games!I never thought I'd see it, since the original Lego Star Wars, through Batman and Indiana Jones all Lego games have essentially been the same. That's isn't the case anymore!Ok, don't worry, not everything has changed, a lot is the same and the game is just as family friendly as you'd expect but there are some key changes. Characters have wands (surprise, surprise) capable of performing a variety of spells to overcome puzzles and enemies alike. In other Lego games there is a lot of switching characters to do different things - and happily that hasn't ended entirely - but there are now ways around these restrictions which I will let you discover for yourselves.Oh and did I mention to be able to use spells you have to learn them? This is Hogwarts SCHOOL of Witchcraft and Wizardry don't forget, lessons are mandatory! This brings us onto another big winner - HOGWARTS. Lego has done away with the basic 'Cantina/College with a bunch of doors' and instead drop you right in the middle of the entire school, classrooms, courtyards, halls and grounds galore! All with nooks and crannies so take the time to explore it and you will be rewarded. And that brings me to my final point. The real shift of focus for the Lego games - before it was about flashing lightsabres and cracking whips and while the flick of a wand in anger isn't ignored the combat is no longer the sole focus of the game. Lego - or rather Travelers Tales has devised some truly brilliant puzzles - never overly taxing, as I said it is still family friendly, but it is good to see puzzles and exploration taking the lead. With Years 5 - 7 an inevitability I'm sure combat will begin to take back its rightful place in the Lego world but for now enjoy your plastic brick childhood and study hard. Maybe one day you too can be a Lego Witch or Wizard. One small piece of advice - the Red Bricks and Gold Bricks are back in force and I would advise you to buy the red brick for 'Ghost Studs' as soon as you find it - they're worth 1000 studs each and I wish I had known that before playing through the game!

If you like Harry Potter and you enjoy the Lego games then getting this should be a no brainer. The game plays well, it's easy to pick up and there are lots to do and collect.I have just finished the game getting everything there is to collect and unlocking everything there is to unlock, it was a grinding effort and long winded at times but I got the job done! Those used to Lego games will know that collecting is the main focus of the game, Studs, Red, Blue and Gold Bricks and of course Unlock able characters to which there are many which means you will be revisiting places more then once, I guarantee it! To gain 100% you need to find everything then play a bonus level at the end,it's long but not as long as the Complete Star Wars collection (stupid super story mode). As with some of the previous Lego games collecting becomes easier once you find some of the red bricks which allows you to turn on arrows that will point in the rough direction of the items locations you need, this is very helpful as you will miss a quarter of items on your first play through I guarantee it! Having said that the two things I needed to collect to gain 100% didn't show up even with this extra activated which caused me to get frustrated walking around and around Hogwarts for hours trying to gain my final Gold Brick. The story mode goes through the first 4 books/films picking out 6 moments in each film to play through. I felt they could have done a better job picking which moments should be playable as some of the levels became repeated which isn't great as you will be repeating levels for collectables anyway.Apart from that the game stays true to the Lego charm including moments for both younger and older gamers.1,000 gamer score is easy to get to (Easier then Star wars) just takes a bit of grinding!I look forward to playing the later years before LOTR's is released.

To start, I purchased this game with the knowledge of great Tt's previous LEGO games have been. I'm a great fan of the Harry Potter movies, and this game has not let me down! The gameplay of LEGO Harry Potter appears to be a combination of the gameplay from previous LEGO titles. For example, it has a 'Home' level (the Leaky Cauldron) as in most LEGO games, but it also has a very large area in which the player must roam to find levels and unlockables, like in the LEGO Indiana Jones 2 game. The player unlocks a variation of spells throughout the game, each assisting the player in various ways (such as Wingardium Leviosa, which is used for building ect.).Unlockables in this game are amazing. There are around 165 playable characters in LEGO Harry Potter, easily the most playable characters I have ever seen in a game. This game also sees the return of the Red Bricks, which are found in various places around Hogwarts. I was slightly confused as to why the Score Multipliers were cheaper than in any other games, considering that LEGO Studs are easier to obtain. Gold Bricks also make a return in this game, as well as the extras that come with finding them.Overall, this is a very good game, probably the best £35 that I have ever spent. The only fault that I can find with this game is that some features of the game require knowledge of the films. For example, I would have found it very difficult to defeat the troll in the first film if I had not known that I needed to pick up the troll's club and drop it on him. Other than that, this is a very good game and is well worth buying, but if you have never seen the films it may be worth watching them before buying this game.

OVERVIEWA brilliant game for Harry Potter & Lego game fans.POSITIVES+ Explore Hogwarts, Hogsmeade, Diagon Alley and many many more familiar locations!+ Play as all your favourite Harry Potter characters+ Cast all your well known spells in the first four stories+ Immerse yourself in the story as you play along as your favourite characters+ Get lost (in a good way) in the magically astounding HogwartsNEGATIVES- Selecting spells is not quite as easy as using the force was in Lego Star Wars- The hub of the game (Hogwarts/Diagon Alley) is not as easily navigatable as the Mos Eisley Cantina in Star Wars (see edit)However, the negatives are only small things and any Harry Potter fans will love this game.Edit 03-08-11:Having played the game a lot more now,I have to say it is more fantastic than I originally thought! Hogwarts is huge and whilst this initially seemed a negative as it was quite daunting and easy to get lost, it is actually a blessing because there is so much to do in Hogwarts alone that you forget about the actual levels! Trying to hunt down every character and red and gold bricks is lots of fun, and you are definitely getting your money's worth! Hours of fun game time, assuming you don't just do the levels and then quit! If you are a huge Potter fan, you will adore exploring Hogwarts and seeing all the cool touches they've included from the books (or not, in some cases, like the Hufflepuff common room!). I play the game alone, however I have done previous games on Coop mode and know how enjoyable that can be too!In conclusion, this game is definitely the best of the LEGO games so far. Bring on Years 5-7!

I love anything Harry Potter so I was looking forward to getting this game. I've never played any other Lego games before so I can't compare with what those others are like. The game is very enjoyable and wandering around Hogwarts, Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade in Lego form is a lot of fun.I don't know whether I am just terribly bad at playing it, but some parts of it I couldn't even finish. In Year 2, Tom Riddle's Diary, I just could not get onto the right hand side platform to get the potion ingredient no matter what I did. I even recurited the husband to help and neither of us could get there so after 5 hours we gave up and the game took us straight onto Follow the Spiders, so we couldn't even go back and try.Other levels let you try again if you stopped in the middle.A lot of the parts where you needed the character to jump to access things was again frustrating. In the Quidditch World Cup it took me hours to get a character to jump over the flames and made it a lot less enjoyable for me. I was also terrible at getting past Draco Malfoy in the snowball fight in Hogsmeade (husband rescued me on that one!)I did like it, but because of the frustrating parts I don't think I'll be replaying it over and over again like I have done with other games. It's fun trying to collect all the characters, gold bricks etc., but I just wish there weren't so many jumping parts which I seem so hopeless at.I ended up in the classroom of doom (below one of the Charms classrooms) but that one I did manage to escape, unlike a lot of other people.

To be honest I was getting sick of the Lego games. It was the same formula applied to each theme with little variation.Lego Harry Potter changed that and improved greatly on the design. Unlike early games that often had the players fighting small waves of bad guys this game focused almost exclusively on the puzzle solving. Not only that, the puzzle solving was often very clever. Both my daughter and I could play the game and discuss how to solve the puzzle or make it through a certain point and we weren't being punished by a timer nor were we being hounded by a non-stop flow of enemies. She is young enough that the challenge of solving the puzzles gives her a good mental workout but the physical requirements of using the controller to precisely fight enemies is a little difficult. This game was perfect for her.Another change that makes the game very family friendly is how the camera is handled. Similar to Lego Indiana Jones 2, the camera will separate into a split screen style when one player moves too far from the other. This more or less handles one of the frustrations of many of the earlier games where one player could move far enough on the screen that they would pull another player into a pit to their death.Overall I would happily recommend Lego Harry Potter to anyone who either: likes the Lego series, is a Harry Potter fan, or will be playing with younger children. It does a wonderful job serving all those groups.

The lego video games have enchanted me from the first moment I picked up Lego Star wars original trilogy and this instalment is no different. As a fan of the Harry Potter franchise, I couldn't wait to play this game and wasn't disappointed.I found the controls fairly easy and intuitive and really liked the quick select option for the spells. There were hints around for the less experienced or younger gamer to prevent too much frustration. The game was fairly quick to play from beginning to end and is rather linear for some tastes. i completed it in a few short hours, but fear not. For the completionists among us this only finished the game to about 35% total. To get 100% completion you had to attain "true wizard" level of stud collection, collect pieces of house crests, red bricks, gold bricks and character tokens. This is achievable by replaying the levels in the story mode again and choosing alternative characters, or by selecting free play.In story mode, true to Travellers Tales M.O., the cut scenes convey the bones of the story with no dialogue but with a liberal sprinkling of humour and farce.I thoroughly recommend this game and to that end, pretty much all of the Travellers Tales' previous forays into Lego video games.

My family owns ALL of the Lego games, and by far, Lego Harry Potter years 1-4 is the superstar! tt games has obviously been working to perfect their product and design throughout Lego Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Batman, and Indiana Jones II, and all that work has paid off in Harry Potter. The puzzles, the characters, the challenges, and the adventures all exceed our expectations of a tt game, which are rather high. Plus the graphics are outstanding; the details, right down to the itty, bitty splashes the water droplets make as they fall to the campus grounds outside Hagrid's hut, are completely amazing and immerse you in Harry's fantastical world.Additionally, my family plays as a trio - my husband, myself and our tween son - and unlike other games, where the player who must watch and get antsy to have a controller in his/her hands, Lego Harry Potter is a thrill to simply watch, which makes it truly group/family play friendly. That, I believe, is a HUGE accomplishment for the game designers, creating a "social" video game for a variety of ages.I highly anticipate the "patch" that is going to make this game xbox live friendly, although I did expect that to be happening sooner.Buy this game; you will NOT be disappointed!

We were lucky enough to get our shiny pre-order copy yesterday! As avid fans of the lego series, my husband and I sat down to play last night, slightly worried after the disappointment of Indiana Jones 2 (which looks gorgeous, but not so much loving the gameplay..). Be not afraid, this is WONDERFUL!! Much more has been made of the hub this time, using Diagon Alley to perfection. Also, as a Harry Potter fan, after playing the EA games I thought Hogwarts might seem rubbish. It really is beautifully designed, and the levels work very well. The puzzle elements are great, and the cauldron and invisibility cloak elements are lovely. My only gripe is actually regarding achievements. We love playing these games together, and find it jolly hard to find 2 player co-op games these days. However, many of these achievements are for single player only. Grrr. Not really the name of the Lego games...A truly wonderful game, although with some of the magic aim being a little trickier than 'the force' in Star Wars, maybe not the ideal first foray into the Lego games series. But you really do have to have it... (Far better than the recent EA attempts at creating the Harry Potter world!!)

My seven-year-old daughter and I played through this game together over several weeks. It was well worth the money - she had a great time and still asks me to go back and play more, and it helped approach the series in a charming way that made showing her the first movie less frightening. But it can be a frustrating game to play - the puzzles aren't always as easy to figure out as they could be. However, if you have a cell phone handy, you can look up walkthroughs for each level easily enough. This also helps with finding characters, which will make free play a lot more fun.The actual game has 4 years x 6 levels = 24 levels, plus some bonus levels. There is a surprisingly detailed rendition of Hogwarts, and a full cast of characters. The way the game introduces each spell is well done - you get to focus on one and use it, then need it for that level's challenge. However, not every spell is equal - I found myself using Wingardium Leviosa a lot, and Expecto Patronum almost never, for example.I wish it was as easy to play as the Star Wars Lego games were, but it's well made and faithful to the movies.

My wife and I got in to the Lego games so that we could play something together. We liked Starwars, and loved Batman Legos. Right now we're playing Indiana Jones and Harry Potter. And of the two, we love Harry Potter. The format is different in that you don't really spend as much time in the level selection areas. You spend more of your time out in commons areas collecting studs, learning new spells and finding the collectibles. From there you enter in to levels...almost seamlessly in fact. Sometimes we won't even realize we've entered a level. Instead of building with your hands, you use magic to build items. There are a bunch of spells each character can learn and use. Many of the characters have different abilities as well, so it is very important to use the correct person for the task. All in all we really like it as the game play is mostly the same as the other Lego games but feels different enough to make it feel exciting and new.In addition you get to fly on broomsticks in this Lego game...you can't beat that!

I have been a fan of the previous Lego games especially the star wars ones but when hearing that a lego Harry Potter game was to be released i was very excited! The game itself is a brilliant mix of puzzle solving and fun challenges which are brilliantly connected to all the spells and the castles many hallways and secret passages. It uses items such as scabbers(Ron's rat) and Harry's invisibility cloak very cleverly as you will sometimes have to use them to progress. The game is brilliant for co-op play which sets it apart from many other games out there. The reason I think this game is better than previous lego games is because there is a free roam element which allows to explore Hogwarts and the grounds without having to do a mission or task. However, the game requires a small amount of knowledge of the books and films otherwise you may not have a clue what is going on! It has brilliant cut-scenes with gentle humour rolling throughout. A must buy for all Harry Potter fans!
