The 7310 is the successor to the 7130 (which we also owned). It has a colour screen on which to preview photos and a cheaper printing system that goes back to the integrated printhead/inktank that hp are known for rather than the separate ink tank and print head in it's predecessor. This means that print quality is a little worse than its predecessor as the print heads integrated into the ink tank are of lower quality than the semi permanent heads (they could still be replaced if need be) of the 7130.The software, a toolbox director window with shortcuts to scan and fax using the computer, as well as change default settings on the unit, works reasonably well. There is basic optical character recognition functionality but if you're going to be doing a lot of OCR you'll need separate OCR software. For best quality printing of photos there is a special photo ink tank/printhead unit (available separately) that you can swap in and out with the standard unit. However quality is still perfectly acceptable to my eyes and the convienience of the colour screen (allows you to easily print photos straight from a memory card without going via the computer) is well worth the upgrade.I'd say the unit is sleeker looking than the old model, though it does seem a little flimsier, eg the paper holder of the automatic document feeder (adf) flexs more than on the 7130 and the hinges on the scanner lid don't look as sturdy. For such a large case (brother makes far more compact multifunction printers with similar features) I don't understand why it still has an external power brick.Unfortunately, like the 7130, the 7310 is tragically crippled by the horrible bloatware that you're encouraged to install to use the unit with your computer (it can be used quite happily by itself as a copier, fax and photo printing station if need be) 350Mb for a compact install and 700Mb if you install the bundled "image zone" software - I wouldn't bother with image zone: it takes forever to load on my mid range machine and was full of odd glitches (e.g. when clicking on an eye whilst zoomed in to select it with the red eye removal tool the view window would suddenly jump to another section of the image, meaning that the eye wasn't selected at all) which would confuse my less computer literate parents and sibings. Swithcing between edit and view modes is also problematic. The program layout is annoying and it doesn't deal well with windows set to large fonts (which we need as some of the computers users have poor eyesight). An alternative such as google picasa is recommended.Faxing and scaning work well, the twain driver now allows you to do duplex scanning from the computer, a feature that was inexplicably missing from the 7130. However you can no longer select duplex scanning when using the scan-to button on the machine, which was the only way to do duplex scan on the 7130! Keep this in mind if the unit will be a long way from the pc. There is a software setting to always scan both sides when using the adf though. The 7310 has a built in network card to allow use as a stand alone network pinter, I connected it up via usb so can't comment on this functionality. We've had the printer about a week. I wish hp would bundle some simple, software that integrates with the good photo printing/organising and scanning features already built into windows (maybe simply adding the photo editing/enhancing features that windows lacks), rather than the terrible image zone, but I'm otherwise happy.

This is the best Ink jet I've ever owned.Easy to setup and use.Print quality - A1Scan quality - A1Copy quality - A1Fax quality in/out - A1Very fast for an inkjet. Well made and rhobust. What else can I say. I've seen the varying 1 to 5 star reviews and must say I have never experienced any of the horror story scenarios.I use the USB Connection to my home PC and am just about to try and network it through my Router so that the wireless laptops can print. But even if this doesn't work I would only downgrade it 1/2 star as it will most likely be something other than the printer itself that fails to work.Shame they phased it out.

Hi, I have had this printer since 2005 and I must say it is great. I have had no problems with it and use it for personal and company usage.People have complained regarding software. I have not had a problem as I use the basic software drivers downloaded from the HP website. These are small and do not harm the PC in anyway.Thanks.
