I purchased the mighty Storm Shield in March of 2013 after my previous umbrella disintegrated following one too many breezy and drizzly South Wales squalls (I'd also dropped some hog roast sandwich in it, but that's another story).I needed an umbrella that could withstand with rigours of the Welsh weather, specifically the windy and wet valleys; I was torn between the Storm Shield and one of those umbrellas with a katana handle, but after taking the auspices it was decided the Storm Shield would be the one.It speaks volumes that I've never felt moved to write a review for an item I've purchased before, but for this I am compelled to share my experiences. The Storm Shield has served me well over the past year; never once failing to fend off the violent gusts and erratic rain. The rubbery grip of the handle gives you confidence when wielding it in awful weather, the good size of the canvas provides excellent cover from rain; and the quality of the double-skinning is such that I've not had it turn inside-out, even during the most violent of gusts! It compares favourably against other umbrellas; a good friend and I were out walking with our respective umbrellas when nature decided to put our defences to the test! The lesser quality of his double-skinned umbrella buckled very early on, my good friend had to use electrical-tape to hold the umbrella up for the rest of our 20 mile walk, and had to cut through this tape anytime he needed to holster his cover. The Storm Shield scoffed at nature's challenge and held strong the entire way. Ask yourself, do you want to carry electrical tape and a knife with you everywhere in case your lesser umbrella is defeated by nature?I believe the Storm Shield also has uses as a divining rod which can help interpret the wishes of the Gods. Only today was I out for a lengthy walk, my planned route led me up a large hill over the back of a valley to a small hamlet then onto home. The weather held for most of the day, but as I began the ascent the weather broke and a fierce storm was unleashed. The rain lashed and the winds howled; I could feel the Storm Shield urging me to turn back but I fought it until I neared the top of the hill... It was then I realised the hopelessness of the journey and acquiesced to the Storm Shield's subtle hints to turn around. As I descended the hill the weather calmed, and by the time I was back on the main road the clouds had parted and some blue sky could be seen. By listening to the Storm Shield I had appeased the Gods and my journey home was clear along the main road. This powerful umbrella is spoken of in hushed tones amongst colleagues at work, it has protected many a head from the wet on the journey to the supermarket next door. Alas, one of my colleagues has recently purchased a Storm Shield for himself and now I have the fear. We hear the distant rumble of thunder and we know that one day our paths will cross in the rain, the Storm Shields will be drawn and we will be overcome by the desire for battle; for there can be only one...

Having purchased a "brolly" in the city and with only a walk around the next corner to have it blow back in my face and beyond repair, I was determined that this spur-of-the-moment type purchase should end. With a decent umbrella for men in mind then, it was off to Amazon and soon concluded that "Fulton" had the pedigree for producing quality umbrella's and all that remained was a matter of choice.I chose "Stormshield for Men" in blue and navy. I selected this colour for should I leave it behind I would be fairly confident that if it were raised by anyone other than the owner I would recognise it and approach with some confidence; destinctive, is how I would describe it and I haven't seen another like it yet, although that might change. It came in two days well packaged in a strong cardboard tube. At first glance it has that mark of quality with "Stormshield" emblazoned in white lettering on the outher sheath. The sheath has two small loops top and bottom that I found most useful when I attached a strap with a clip at either end that allowed me to carry the umbrella with the strap slung over my shoulder. I found this the most convenient way to carry the umbrella when out for a brisk long walk and with the expectation of rain only. I would suggest the Stormshield is not intended to be used as a walking stick. Be mindful that this is a substantial well constructed umbrella and as such is no light-weight. When opened up and fully extended over the head you will always be aware of its presence as you face in to the wind and rain. This is serious protection for up to two persons but I would suggest common sense is advised. And even though "Stormshield" is the name, who would want to do battle with a storm and try and hold your ground with this big shield. This is a fine umbrella and as an OAP I won't be testing it in any storm, it might just get the better of me.

My last two umbrellas have ended their days after being blown inside out and being irretrievably damaged in the process. Enter centre stage the Fulton Stormshield. This is a battleship of an umbrella: a Forth Bridge of an umbrella: an umbrella that Brunel would have been proud of. It laughs at the wind's feeble attempts to attack it: it sheds rain with contempt. One day, all umbrellas will be built like this. Just two downsides: it is relatively heavy for an umbrella and, because of its Gargantuan canopy, it needs a strong arm to hold on to it when the wind is strong. Make no mistakes; this is the stormproof umbrella that you've dreamed of, but it won't fit into your bag and you'll know that you're carrying it.For staying dry when you're out in the raging storm, it has no equal. Its now 19 months since I bought my Stormshield and I have to report that my admiration for it is undiminished. If anything, I now hold it in even greater esteem! I have used it in 'Amber Alert' winds and, although it has often been difficult to hang on to, it hasn't let me down. On at least 3 occasions I was expecting it to fail but, with a fairly loud 'pop!', the vent between the canopies opened to release the pressure and the day was saved! As a former scientist, now retired, and with no connection to Fulton (although I have owned one of their collapsible umbrellas which served me well on Pyrenean hikes), it is my considered opinion that the Stormshield is brilliant. I can report a few hiccups: the little Velcro patch that retains one of the straps is coming un-stitched and it has closed on me twice, although maybe I hadn't operated the top catch completely. If someone had said to me that they could guarantee to keep me dry through the worst of storms for 19-plus months for £20-odd, I'd have made the deal with no hesitation. Let 'Land of Hope and Glory' play on!

I've been using this umbrella for a month and it is great. For the purpose of this Amazon review, when I went out in very windy/gusty weather I decided not to lean the umbrella into the wind like a shield which I would usually do as a safe method to protect the umbrella (which also takes extra energy) - but instead to keep the umbrella firmly upright.I was walking along the canal for an hour, and the intermittent trees meant that wind whipped around from different directions and angles. The wind definitely would have turned most umbrellas inside out, but this Fulton model worked a treat venting the wind out. I had to grip with two hands a fair amount (this was very stormy wind, marked as red alert in other parts of the country) and there was sometimes some feeling of uplift as the wind tried to lift the umbrella up but it never felt beyond control. The grip is nice enough, and the material hasn't ripped when I have brushed against twigs, holly and brambles (but this was very light brushes, I haven't put it to a real test - and although I was willing to risk the umbrella blowing inside out for this review, I'm not going to run around rubbing my umbrella on brambles for you guys). The umbrella has slightly more weight than I would have liked (Fulton: If you make another umbrella that is £10 more expensive but same strength/design and lighter I will happily buy), but about the same weight as other golf umbrellas I have used in the past.

Having already been ripped off by a £15 umbrella that claimed to be strong but broke apart after just two days thanks to the stormy weather we experienced in January 2016, I decided to give this one a go. Thankfully, it hasn't let me down. This umbrella is an absolute beast, and having subjected it to the same stormy conditions I can thankfully report it showed no signs of even threatening to compromise its structure. It's a tad heavy, but the handle's got a fantastic grip so it's easy to keep hold of it.The top is also wide enough to ensure you're well covered and your legs don't get wet (other than during the more ridiculous windy storms when the rain's nearly horizontal,in which case nothing can really help you). There are a couple of things to bear in mind before ordering it, mind. Firstly, if you're planning on just using it for walking down the high street then bear in mind it's a big one and doesn't have a telescopic handle, so you'll need to be fine with walking about with it like a badass walking stick.Secondly, since it's quite wide, if you're going to use it down the high street then be prepared for the odd occasion where you have to lift it high (or even temporarily fold it down) when you're walking through narrow areas. That aside, this is a monster and comes highly recommended.

This is everything they say it is! It is big but then who wants a tiny umbrella that means your shoulders or back gets wet?! Extremely well made and solid to the touch. I looked at tonnes of reviews of about 20 umbrellas before getting this......and it's everything I hoped it would be. I was looking at getting one of those umbrellas that has the Samurai handle but decided against it and went for this. Yeah it would look cooler, but you're having a bad enough day when it's raining without being rugby tackled by the police just walking down the street.Don't get me wrong, it's not going to make you look younger, live longer, cook you dinner or keep you company on those cold winter nights.....because guys,it's just an umbrella.....But, if you're looking for an umbrella that will last you and keep you dry in the middle of a tsunami ....then this is the one! I reckon you could even turn it upside down and use it as a boat!Question: how many times was the word umbrella used in this review? If you re-read this review and count , then something bad will happen in that many days! You really want to know how many times now don't you! ....ok ..............it's 6.......or is it?UPDATE - 2 YEARS ON.STILL AMAZING AS IT WAS AND USED REGULARLY! BEST UMBRELLA ON THE MARKET

Without doubt, a superb umbrella. If you can keep yours up whilst all about are binning theirs - you've got a Fulton Stormshield.I'm 6'4" and this is the realistic minimum size I need to keep my lower legs reasonably protected from rain.My first one was destroyed by a comedian stamped on it when I'd left it leaning against a wall. My second is about 5yrs old and a showing signs of age - but it still performs. The first thing to go is the Fulton badge in the base of the handle (happened on both of mine). Next, since a year or so ago, I have an occasional, light drip from near the centre. The last thing to happen was the thread holding one facet of the vent cover to one of the spines has frayed and come adrift, and this is noticeable when the brolly is closed as it hangs unevenly until I wrap it round nicely. When deployed, this unattached flap-edge does not show, nor has it affected the performance of the brolly in any weather. As others have said, it may seem strange to spend "so much" on an umbrella. What you'll find is that this is the right price to pay for an umbrella that finally ticks all the boxes. I recommend this to anyone taller than it is wide.

Picked up one of these as I felt the need for a larger more 'golf-like' umbrella. So far I've, unfortunately, had to use it most of the week - and it's held up to the 'heavy' rain that the Dark Sky app said was going on. I walk a good 5km with it each time, and come back bone-dry, with the exception of my feet. But I think they just encountered puddles that unfortunately an umbrella can do nothing about!I've caught a few *light* gusts of wind, and they've been enough to slightly lift the umbrella, so I'm not sure how good the 'flaps' will be at mitigating severe gusts... But it's probably better to have the design with flaps than not.The other thing I'll say is that, whilst the build-quality seems reasonable,I don't think it's going to be a lifetime product. The cover is held to the struts by very weak looking threads, and there's cheap plastic bits throughout. The stem seems like a decent 'carbon fibre' effect material, and seems pretty robust, and the handle is light, grippy and comfortable to hold for an hour or so of walking.Overall, for the price it's not too bad at all - and will hopefully last a few years, if not many.

Ok so this may seem expensive when you first look at it, but it really is worth it as this will last a really long time. This is a really strong umbrella which can withstand almost gale force winds (for as long as you have the strength to hold on to it!) and on the whole works really well.I have used this for myself in the winter but have also used it in the summer as a mini parasol to keep my god daughter protected from the sun. However I have a couple of minor grips:-First is that it is not as curved as the picture would suggest, which means that for me it wasn't very effective if rested on my shoulder, even considering it's size.Second is that I personally would have preferred a curved handle so it could be held a bit like a walking stick.Third while not a problem for me,some may find this a little heavy (especially when you can't really rest it on your shoulder), also it's size can be more of an issue than you might think especially when walking down a pavement, it is very easy to misjudge and for the umbrella to knock into someone.

This is a very robust and manly brolly that laughs in the face of driving rain and coastal gusts, great value for the money, it really does feel very strong. In fact, if you were a small person with a strong grip there would actually be a genuine danger of being lifted off your feet! My main gripe is with the mechanism used to secure the umbrella when opened. In a bid to avoid previous finger catching devices, we all know what its like when your fingertips get nipped by the metal lock, this umbrella employs a plastic catch that was often problematic, refusing to simply lock into position and often requiring great force to snap into place.I don't think my umbrella was faulty but rather I believe its a design error that really lets this umbrella down. This may seem a small point, but when you leave a building in the pouting rain the last thing you need is a fight to securely open your umbrella. If they fixed this I'd gladly give five stars as it is great value for money and will keep you dry, even in the wind, something few umbrellas ever achieve.

I've owned all sorts of umbrellas over the years. And this Fulton is the best I've ever owned. Standing nicely up to waist height, this brolly has a quality feel to it. Contstructed of a Fibreglass shaft and metal braces, it is designed to last. A unique feature is the fact that it incorporates a vent at the top so if its being used in stormy conditions, the wind can pass through considerably lessening the chance of damage to it or injury to the user or passers by.In practice, this Fulton performs impeccably. It provides a good shelter from driving rain and also has proved sturdy in everyday use.I've been out in some very severe weather with a Fulton Stormshield in the past and it more than lives up to its claims. The Storm vent doesn't eliminate the habit of the unit trying to blow away but its certainly a step in the right direction. If I was going to moan in any way? Well maybe they shouldn't be so easy to lose. But that's more down to me of course.Overall I'm VERY IMPRESSED indeed with my Stormshield and would thoroughly recommend it.

This is a bit of a story. A while back, while leaving a building in Covent Garden, a sudden and wild rains storm came pouring down. As my friend and I were hovering in a doorway, contemplating how to navigate ourselves to the tube, a kind, gentleman stranger, with this amazing umbrella- a Fulton Stormshield- invited us to join him. He asked us where we were going and after accompanying us to the tube, with surprising generosity, handed the umbrella to me. I took it, and felt guilty for coveting such an item. I have been amazed at how solid it feels, and my husband loves the breath and coverage that it gives. So for my friends birthday, I surprised her with the umbrellas as a gift, and when she receive it, she was, thrilled! My friend plays golf and she said that she ' loved the quality and wideness of the brollie, and as she is living in a part of the Country which is receiving a lot of this bad weather, she said, that "it couldn't have come at a better time'"!

Although I've only had to use the umbrella once so far since receiving it, it has already paid for itself and then some. As anyone who lives in Edinburgh knows, the winds and rain can be quite troublesome when walking around. Last week, the winds here were atrociously high speed and, when coupled with torrential rains, made it difficult to walk around with the old umbrella I had and stay dry (In fact, it broke). So, I pulled out this umbrella and gave it a try. Although it was bucked around a bit by the wind, it generally held its own and managed to keep me relatively dry. The fibreglass construction is well built and lightweight. My only complaint about this umbrella is that the cover shipped with it is extremely hard to get back on once removed.I've relegated it to a spot in my backpack and not thought about it since. The umbrella is slightly large, but well worth the space if you can manage it.

Out for my walk yesterday and used the brolly for the first time. The wind was quite strong coming across the open fields and it started to rain. I had quite a tussle with the wind and had to hold on very tight to the brolly with both hands. It stood up to the job very well. At one point I thought that I might take-off 'Mary Poppins' style. It is very light weight and appears to be very durable.So-far-so good.A little niggle is that it is not supplied with a lanyard or a wrist loop. It doesn't even provide any means of connection for these.I decided to improvise, short term, with a long boot-lace.As usual, Amazon ordering and delivery service was excellent.A small niggle.Maybe they might consider a protective transit tube made from recycled cardboard or plastic. My delivery was OK but it had only a flimsy plastic delivery bag and could easily have arrived as a 'Return-to-sender' item.

This is the second Fulton Stormshield Umbrella I have owned, the first was stolen by a clearly very jealous and impoverished individual, surprisingly they got away unnoticed, impressive considering the vast size of this umbrella, in some countries the canopy size can legally be declared as a dwelling... The umbrella performs its task well keeping me dry even in more extreme conditions, I live in Devon (UK) an area renounced for excessive rainfall and yet have remained dry due to this fantastic umbrella. The only negative I have found is the umbrella stays up in all conditions, this resulted in me taking it out in all conditions which did cause excessive arm and back ache as I attempted to hang onto this umbrella as it acted like a speed training parachute behind or above me,mind you this is no fault of the umbrella but a fault of my own constitution. A product I would highly recommend.
