I bought this umbrella after being let down by a cheap £5 telescopic one I'd bought from nowhere important. I decided I needed to invest in a real "manly" umbrella; black as the night's watch and so smart that it would be something the great Gatsby would consider for his rainy days out in the town. This is why I went for the Fulton Hunter. This umbrella offers a sophisticated look to the user, one that should be accompanied by a trench coat, smart shoes and sandalwood fragrance. But hey, the umbrella is a good start to all of that.First of all, i'm re-editing my original review. I bought this in November 2011 it's now May 2013 and the umbrella is still going strong. The wood is wearing slightly revealing a less tasteful white; likely redwood, underneath the pleasant veneer. This is the only downside.Secondly, the pro's of which there are many... It's robust, it must have been since it's survived this long. It's heavy for an umbrella, giving it a sturdy feel. It looks elegant when closed and open. This isn't a golf so you can't fit a crowd underneath it, however if you're trying to pull that special lady close to you then it's a sure thing. Finally, the crooked handle. Ah, the uses this has. Firstly, it hooks around you arm if you're faffing. It hooks over bars, rails and banisters which is invaluable and it allows for the twirly motions of nonchalance one can exhibit as a young, sophisticated gentleman. But don't be mistaken into thinking this umbrella can only be used to keep off the rain. I have found many uses for it in the last years. Knocking apples off trees in autumn (I've never done this). Catching lift doors as they're about to close (Many a time done this). Spontaneously re-enacting the eccentric walk down those stairs in the original Willy Wonka film with Gene Wilder (I've been asked never to do this again). Finally, resting assured that should you need it, this would be invaluable in a zombie apocalypse. In tandem with a handy cast iron skillet I think the combo would allow for swift dispatch of undead foe whilst maintaining their normal useful uses.A true investment.

This is my third Fulton Hunstsman umbrella but not because the previous ones failed. The first was a gift... that one got stolen. The second I bought to replace the first... I foolishly left it somewhere and when I went back to get it, it too had disappeared. This one I need to be more careful with!So why keep buying the same brand and model? Because these really are extremely solid and strong. The double ribs greatly help to reduce the umbrella turning inside out in strong winds but, even if it does, it's easy to flip it back without damage. After flipping, the canopies on most other umbrellas I've owned have become floppy but the Huntsman remains taught and rigid as ever. The generous size of the canopy can comfortably accommodate two people (assuming it's someone you can get close to under current guidelines!). The shaft and handle are also strong, giving a product that will withstand the most punishing conditions.Downsides? The only negatives I have are that the wood of the handle will show dings and knocks over time. But it's wood so I guess that's only to be expected. Also the base ring that holds the spokes together when shut doesn't really work as well as I'd like but this isn't really an issue as the Velcro wraparound does the job perfectly well. These are extremely minor niggles. I'd rather put up with these and have an umbrella that really does it's job and lasts well.In conclusion, this really is a lot of umbrella for the price tag. It's big, strong and reliable. I used to buy telescopic umbrellas but never found a make/model that didn't become floppy or break over time. OK, the Huntsman won't fit into a handbag, man bag, briefcase or backpack but, if you want an umbrella that's strong and reliable, you won't be disappointed.

I am very happy with the quality, despite some small issues.+ Does what it needs to do under all circumstances and I used mine for several years. I bought now another one for my father because I am so happy with it.Small issues:- I dropped it often so some less important parts are damaged:-- Handle got some cracks and scratches in the resist layer, so the wood may start to rot in maybe another 10 years or so...-- Under the handle is (or rather was) a plastic ring-like structure which can hold the tips of the ribs. That cracked and finally broke off. It is not really needed, so I don't really care, but they could make that of metal instead.- Another problem: There is a ribbon to fasten the umbrella when not in use (as most umbrellas have it).It can get caught in the stretcher, so that the umbrella cannot be opened (and I suspect if you then just tried it with brute force you could damage the umbrella). Disentangling the ribbon easily solves the problem, but possibly there could be a better design preventing this from happening at all. I bet there are people who broke the umbrella that way, because they did not notice that the ribbon was entangled, so you need to be aware that this problem can occur or you risk damaging your umbrella when you just try to open it...Other the that the umbrella seems nearly unbreakable even under sever weather conditions.

I have just received my Huntsman, and I am partly disappointed. Well, all in all, remember it costs 16 pounds, not 100. But Fulton writes "dark wood handle" and this is not true, dark wood commonly implies it is ...somehow dark, and rather hard, not necessarily the most expensive one. Instead, it is thick, but not well finished at all, and made of some rather soft wood with a really thin coat of dark varnish, too delicate: does any umbrella get no hit in his life? In my case, the umbrella arrived just folded with a plastic sheet, inadequate for an international shipping (this is of course Amazon fault) and got two hits on the handle, which lost the varnish in two points revealing a not exactly appropriate quality for a "by appointment etc.etc." trade mark. Moreover, the "cursor" which moves along the shaft has a too delicate plastic tab to be pressed for much time opening and closing. Yet this umbrella has very good characteristics, ribs (double ribs!), fabric, shaft are very good-looking and strong. Well, sigh, will varnish the handle again...

An elegant and sturdy umbrella for the discerning gentleman/woman. If it rains it keeps you dry. If it doesn't rain you would be dry anyway but look fetching with the umbrella by your side in readiness for any potential precipitation. I have in my life used many umbrellas to varying success. Mostly they buckle under life's pressure. Given a small gust of wind they yield like cowardly canopies of ineffectuality. Not this umbrella. Man no. This little marvel faces the vicissitudes of inclemency like a warrior of wetness protection, a brave and fearless shield of nylon that won't let you down. Investing in this umbrella is no marriage of convenience, its a passionate love affair with an inanimate object, one that will make your favourite gadgets jealous as you take it everywhere with you, happy in its company and old world simplicity, no need for batteries or USB sticks, just the firm grasp of your tender grip, prepared for the clouds and all they can throw at you, joyous in the freedom this affords. Huntsmen! I love you like no other! Be mine.

Fulton is the brand of umberella that I will always bit after owning several in the past, all of very great quality.I bought this specific umberella whilst away as I had forgotten my own.The first thing to consider is the size of this umberella, being full size this could be overly large for many and Fulton sells many other very high quality compact umberellas.I would be incredibly suprised if anyone bought this and was disappointed with the build quality in the hood of the umbrella. The struts and mechanisms are study and hold the material incredibly taut. The only point that should be considered before purchasing this and the only downside that I have identified from this umberella would be the appearance of the wooden handle. This doesn't look as premium as others, likely to keep costs down. If this is being bought as a fashion accessory this could be an issue and a higher quality handle would likely only come from a more expensive umbrella. Most importantly, this umberella is yet to turn inside out.

I purchased this when my normal folding umbrella ditche me during the recent bad weather. I wanted something that can cover 2 person as by whole objective is to use it when i collect my daughter from school. This is a very nice umbrella and i dont regret buying this. Here are some goods and bads.Pros:- Its strong sturty and well built.- the wooden (don't know if its really wood) handle is strong as far as felt. I dont see a reason it will break provided there is no manufactuing defect or cracks.- Quite big canopy and can cover 2 grown up persons easily- Button for fastening it. Normally cheaper ones comes with vencro- Wind proof: What it means is the umbrella will bend to the outer side in case of a storm which can prevent the ribs from breaking.Cons:- Heavy. Not very heavy but you may feel it. My wife clearly said she will not use it.- A bit pricey. I wish this could have been a bit lower. But wont complain.- I wish there was a button to automatically open it. Its all manual.

What can go up a chimney down but can't come down a chimney up? - an umbrella.Have decided to take this on a trekking holiday much in the manner of Nicholas Crane. Some trekkers say that an umbrella has its advantages not just in providing instant protection from rain but also allows the expensive camera to be used without getting it wet or getting drops on the lens. It provides similar shelter for a quick spot of map reading and direction finding. When sitting down for a rest or something to eat it can be placed open on the ground to provide a windbreak for the back. The Huntsman was delivered through the letterbox while I was out so maybe an argument for not too much packaging, the carrier could easily see that it was an umbrella. This umbrella has double ribs and a 14mm stick for extra strength.P.S. Best not to hold an umbrella up in open country during a lightning storm.Regards

I love this umbrella. I really do. These chaps have been making umbrellas for a while now and it's safe to say they know what they're doing. It's one of their cheaper umbrellas but it's massive (106cm) when open, it's got a huge wooden handle, 14mm steel shaft and the steel frame is doubled for extra strength. What this meant, while using it:- it didn't tip over at the first gust of wind- it didn't start bending or wobbling- it can easily take 3 people underneath itInitially I was worried about the price tag versus durability as Manchester is a big umbrella graveyard anyway when it starts raining, but thinking about it realistically, I haven't had a new one in months (of autumn and winter),whereas before I'd have bought several cheap ones up to £15 that broke within minutes. So it's a solid investment for furious weather conditions if I do say so myself.

Mechanically the strongest ordinary umbrellas I have ever owned (I have two). They are almost as good as a good storm umbrella but nowhere near as heavy or bulky. Both of mine have taken a great deal of punishment mechanically unscathed. When the umbrella does turn inside out (which is not very common) simply closing it and opening it again will return it to normal. They seem to be almost indestructible. The handle is the only thing I would criticise. Mechanically it is extremely strong. It seems to be made of some very tough composite material with only a thin veneer of wood-like plastic. Looks fine until it scratches but when it does the inner material shows through.Personally I would rather pay a bit more for real wood or bamboo handle. But it is a minor flaw in what a jolly good brolly. Even with the handle problem this gets an easy five stars.

This umbrella feels sturdy and well made, and looks smart. The arms and struts inside the main canopy of the umbrella are of a thick metal construction, and feel like they can withstand more load than those on an ordinary cheaper umbrella. The overall opening mechanism also feels smooth and positive when operated. Unfortunately I haven't tried it yet in very high wind conditions, and therefore am yet to be convinced as to how windproof it is, although I strongly suspect that very high winds could still turn this inside out as the canopy is very large. The handle itself probably would benefit from a slightly thicker varnish as I was able to scratch it very easily, but apart from that, very pleased with the product.

This Classy umbrella is great for rainy/Windy weather, it is made of strong metal and there is little chance of it breaking in heavy rain or wind like some of the cheaper umbrellas tend to do.For someone that like's classy things or the monarchist that likes items with a royal Warrant or wants to look like a gentleman using a full leangth walking umbrella, this is an affordable option that looks great with the wood handle.it should be noted however that the Wood on the handle is very easy to scratch like me, I have dropped it and sadly the wood was easily scratched and have now had to buy a new one, but as long as you take care this is a great choice

This is a very nice umbrella, it looks and feels well made. It's very stylish in an understated, gentlemanly manner and was a great price.Arrived in a huge 5ft long box! I did panic thinking I'd bought some industrial sized behemoth but it's "normal" sized.Super quick delivery (less than 24 hours from ordering)Very, very pleased with this. I don't see me needing to buy another one for a long, long time... unless someone pinches it or I'm daft enough to lose it! I'm definitely putting a label with my name and number on it in case someone "accidentally" walks off with it.

Had this brolly for two days,it slipped out of my hand and hit the ground, the softwood handle has a big scrape on it now really takes the look off it ! As other reviewers have stated, the handle is poor and the coating on it is poor...This is a real disappointment because the rest of the umbrella feels well made. I was wary to protect the handle after reading the other reviews. I bought this as I already have a Fulton Umbrella and have done for years but this has a hard plastic handle and takes all the knocks. Hopefully Fulton will modify the handle slightly in future.

The Hunstman is not of the mould of other Fulton walking umbrellas. Most of the others are lighter and much better looking. However this is a very strong umbrella which is built to last. I had a walking umbrella purchased from Boots about 20 years ago which was quite similar to this umbrella. It lasted 20yrs and got stolen! so I am still in mourning. This is a very good replacement though. The packaging was terrible and arrived broken. I reordered and packaging was just as bad but lucky second time around. Just came in a plastic covering. AMAZON sort out the packaging.
