I don't know what I do with umbrellas but no matter how many I buy I either lose them or they turn inside out during windy weather and don't work properly afterwards. So I thought I would try one from the Fulton range as they are supposed to be of much better quality than the cheap ones you get from the supermarket.I chose the birdcage style as I specifically wanted plenty of coverage whilst walking the dog, not only over my head but also my shoulders and upper body. Being clear plastic allows you to have this extra coverage whilst still being able to see where you are going. My first impression was that I was surprised at how long it was whist unopened - almost as long as a golfing umbrella -there is no chance of being able to tuck this model into your handbag or under your arm whilst out shopping. On opening the umbrella the mechanism was extremely smooth and it felt good quality. Many of my cheaper umbrellas have caught whilst opening or had to be put up in stages. This one just glides open and then catches firmly to stay open and fully extended. The mechanism is just as smooth when closing it back down again. The handle is comfortable to hold although I did find myself tending to hold the straight stem more often than not as it felt a little unbalanced at times when using the handle.Whilst open it does provide good coverage and protection against the wind and rain. It is large whilst open and you do need to be aware of how much space it takes up whilst you are walking as it is easy to bump into people. Unfortunately although large it doesn't seem to be the right shape for two people to shelter together underneath it.I used this umbrella yesterday whilst walking the dog in the terrible gales. I was a little nervous that it would blow inside out but it didn't move at all and there were no signs of damage when I got home.Overall a large, practical and good quality umbrella.

This was quite expensive for an umbrella - I usually buy the cheaper ones as, living where I do in all this wind and rain, umbrella's don't last so long. I decided to go for this as I was fed up of having to buy a new umbrella every week or so and in the long run, this was probably costing me more anyway. This one is advertised it as wind proof which is what first attracted me to it. I've been out in high winds with it once and it seemed to stand up to the test, but I was only walking from the bus stop to my house which isn't any great distance - so whether it would hold up under a more lengthy battering, I'm not sure. The wind can't get underneath it to blow it inside out because of the design, but you need to hold it low enough over your head to make sure it doesn't, because if it did and this umbrella got blown inside out, it would break - you wouldn't be able to fight it back into shape like you can with the 'flatter' shaped ones. It's certainly very well made; it feels good and sturdy and I like the shape. It covers your head and shoulders, which means the rain runs off it and on to the ground, not down your back, thus soaking the back of your knees and ankles. It does steam up a little on the inside which can make it harder to see through, but not so much so that you're walking blind.Overall, I need to give it another try in the wild welsh weather before I can say I'm completely happy with it, but so far - it's good!I thought I would write an update for this product as mine has developed a hole - after only buying it in January and using it intermittently, i.e. two out of every seven days at the most. This would denote to me that this product is not such great value for money and I won't be buying another one. Amazon - with all their money - could let me return it for a replacement, but they won't!

I bought this umbrella as a gift for my wife and I'm very pleased to say that she is delighted with it. It's made by Britain's biggest brolly maker and having looked at some similar umbrellas from cheaper manufacturers I'm glad that I chose this one. It's well made, has a smooth operation and it also looks very smart (I chose to buy the white trimmed version). The only negative point we've found is that it arrives looking `dusty', except that it is not dirt - it's actually a powder which has been applied in the factory to stop the plastic panels sticking together when folded down, and although this does spoil the look of the brolly it will wash off fairly easily leaving it spotlessly clear. The downside to that is the panels will seem to stick to each other as you unfold the umbrella, but we've noticed the effect wearing off and it is hardly noticeable now after a few weeks.I'd originally bought it for her after she had admired one on a street whilst out shopping, and it seems to have a similar effect on other ladies as in town last week a stranger came up to her and asked where she could buy one for herself! All in all we can say that it's a very smart, stylish umbrella that gains admiring glances whenever it's used, and it would also be very suitable for use at events such as weddings.

I am delighted with my new Fulton umbrella as it is very specially designed to protect in wet and strong, windy weather. It is light, so easy to open and close and it lets me see where I am going. As a daily, rural dog walker, I really need to see where I am going in the wind and rain as most of the drivers in my area rarely want to take prisoners! You will excuse my slight exaggeration about walking into lamp standards. Actually, I have to drive more than 6 miles to find the nearest one to my country cottage home.I am not new to Fulton umbrellas. I have a neat, dressy one that I keep in my car for when I am forced to walk. I also have a large, hurricane proof one which weighs a ton, which arrived with what appeared to be a large gun carry/cover and which seems to want to take my fingertips off whenever I make use of it. After a lengthy dog walk with it, my elbows feel as if they don't belong to me. This one is now going into mothballs! All three umbrellas, however, are well made to last from quality materials and beautifully finished, but my special favourite is this most recent buy. I do hope we have a wet and windy winter!

The Fulton Birdcage appears a robust and well constructed umbrella, easy to open and close. Its shape and size are sufficient to cover me (an adult male) almost down to the waist. The material is very transparent, giving good all round visibility. I haven't used it yet in windy conditions, making it difficult to comment on how well it would tolerate being blown about. So far though the umbrella has been everything I would want it to be and I have no regrets about buying it. The price seems reasonable as well.A couple of additional comments:(i) The domed shape is very good at deflecting rain from the upper body. However, the deflected rain has to go somewhere and I find it ends up smothering me from the lower midriff down, saturating my trousers, and trickling into my shoes;(ii) I walk briskly, generating heat, which rises up into the dome of the umbrella and collects there, making the Birdcage a surprisingly warm and steamy place to be.So, I end up very wet at one end and rather moist at the other end. But it's still an improvement over a conventional umbrella, better looking and easier to use.

I have never been much of an umbrella user having lived mostly in Florida, Southern California and New Mexico, but of course living in the UK one definitely needs a good brolly! And this one fits the bill perfectly. It completely covers your shoulders and head, is strong and sturdy even in windy conditions and being transparent enables you to be completely covered and still see where you are going. As opposed to the ones with the coloured stripe around the edge, this one offers no visual impairment as it's all completely transparent. The opening mechanism is smooth and clicks into place very easily. Just make sure you hold it by the grip when opening as you might catch your finger if it's underneath when you slide it.I have been "bitten" once! In the 8 years I've been in this country, I've tried many other umbrellas, but I think I will stick with this brand from now on as I think it's a quality product. Plus, the lavender colour is gorgeous and looks great in photos!

I have an electric wheelchair and was looking for something big enough to cover me but that I could see through so I wouldn't crash and that was good quality and looked nice as well. This, I am pleased to say, fits the bill perfectly. I have problems with my hands as well and this is extremely easy to open and close so no little buttons for me to struggle with. I am so impressed with the quality of this umbrella, the opening and closing mechanism is well made and smooth and the plastic is thick and strong and not flimsy like some I have seen. It's just over all a very good quality umbrella as you would expect for the price. I always used to buy cheap umbrellas that would break and I wanted a decent one this time.selected the red one as I have a red coat and my wheelchair is red. Got to be colour coordinated right ladies, lol! Would recommend this umbrella. definitely worth paying the extra for good quality.

Despite the fact that its somewhat garish black & white design seems to be geared more for a revival of the cult TV programme The Prisoner (remember?) this is an excellent umbrella. The stem and handle are solid (more than they appear to be at first glance) and the mechanism opens very smoothly, with no "button" and self-opening thingee...which always go wrong. The covering in rain and wind is fine and the plastic is sensibly thick.Granted, this is not a fashion accessory (i.e. a smart black brolly with wooden handle) but it does its job well.Just be careful when using scissors to open the packaging; you could pierce the plastic (no I didn't...but nearly did!)Why not 5 stars?Because it doesn't look too great...but who's looking at you when the heavens have opened anyway?

Amazing to use on wet days - like other reviews have said, since you can see through the umbrella, you can hold it really low and it will basically form a bubble between you and the rest of the world - well, your top half anyway! The construction is really solid, and the shape means you don't have to worry about it ever turning inside out on windy days. The only downside for me is that it's REALLY BIG. Which is great when I actually have to use it, but since I like to carry an umbrella everywhere just in case I get caught in a shower, it's not the most portable option around. It doesn't retract, and is definitely on the long side when compared to other non-retractable umbrellas. So I find that I need another separate "just in case" umbrella to go in my handbag.

I bought this as I live in the Channel Islands and every umbrella I've bought here has gone inside out within a week. A friend of mine had a birdcage umbrella and never seemed to struggle so I went for it!It was a total break through! It has seen out the Guernsey winter and is still going strong. The design means the wind can't get underneath it and it also stops sideways rain from messing up your hair! Fantastic purchase.Only small problem is that the clasp bit for holding it closed (the bit that wraps around and poppers on) broke after week 1, same with my friend's but we just use a hairband to keep it shut and it does the trick. I guess with the plastic constantly getting wet then drying out,the seam was just overworked.Buy this! It's awesome!

I just completed a Fultons review for a men's collapsible briefcase umbrella and gave it 5 stars. I was then about to review my wife's umbrella's and laud it's quality and design when I noticed they are both from the same company. Obviously a company that likes to do things right and not farm out the cheapest umbrella they can find with the biggest margin. I'll say the same for this as I did mine. Very durable, well made and worth the money. I don't know if part of the success of these umbrella's is down to their size but I will mention here and now they are designed for only 1 person in mind so unless you want to get really snuggly with someone it's not really made for sharing. However keep this to hand in downpours and you'll remain quite dry :)

The weather has been so bad this year that normal umbrellas have failed to keep female members of our family dry during ordinary squalls - let alone the lashing storms that always seemed to come along when husky competitors running in marathons appreciated a supporting entourage! Appalling conditions during the New Forest Marathon were the last straw! Fed up with umbrellas that crumpled or blew inside out,it was obvious that a more sturdy and better designed umbrella was needed. The Fulton seemed to be a perfect solution; and the first one [ordered yesterday]arrived today. We were so impressed with the design, quality and functionality that two more have been ordered as Christmas presents. We are confident that recipients will love them.

Love this umbrella, use it for the 4 mile walk to work every day and know it won't end up blowing inside out. Reduces the incidence of bad hair days when it rains as it comes down to your shoulders and keeps you dry. Only downside is that it 'steams' up a bit inside so you can't see where you're going very clearly and when it stops raining you're stuck carrying a large umbrella for the rest of the walk as it obviously doesn't fold up, so I only take it with me when it's 100% going to rain, knowing with confidence that I'll stay dry on top. Good quality umbrella, though a bit dubious how long the fastener is going to last holding it shut as the popper sometimes pings open which is a bitannoying.

The best feature with this umbrella is the simple and smooth push-up method for opening it: no trapped skin while trying to press a fiddly button. You also simply pull it down to close it. When open this umbrella is very room and you don't feel as if it's practically hugging your shoulders. Also, being a dome shape it won't blow inside out. The hooked handle is nice and large, so that it sits comfortably over the coat on your arm when you need to use both hands in a shop, etc.If you want a compact umbrella which fits in your bag this isn't the umbrella for you. But if you are fed up of wasting money on flimsy umbrellas which break when blown inside out, then this is a very stylish alternative

I've been wanting a birdcage umbrella for a long time now and finally made the decision to purchase a Fulton one after reading lots of good reviews (they must be good if the Queen endorses them right?). I've been using this umbrella for quite a few months now and it's served me well! It keeps me dry in torrential downpours and just yesterday we had horrendous rain mixed with high winds.......not normally a good combination for normal umbrellas! This one however withstood both with ease! Very impressed with it, and although it's a lot bigger and bulkier than a normal umbrella, it's worth it!! Wouldn't hesitate to recommend and will certainly repurchase if this one ever packs up!
