I push the button. Instantly the runner is propelled up the high grade steel shaft, extending the eight premium fibreglass ribs into place. With a snap, the Balios Travel Umbrella is at full stretch (a generous 1 metre in diameter), and I'm ready to face the drizzle. I stride out from my stairwell refuge, and feel the first few droplets hit the 300 thread count high-density fabric of the canopy; their blows are momentarily absorbed by the flexible, silky membrane, then repelled, springing off to land at a safe distance. "Damn that's satisfying" I think. I feel impenetrable. Impermeable. Impetuous. Dry.As I saunter through the deluge, I can’t help but feel the polished finish of the golden rosewood handle, and enjoy its smoothness in the grip of my right hand. “Now that’s craftsmanship” I purr. But, as I angle it to examine the Balios maker’s mark etched (flawlessly) into the stainless steel base, the tip of the brolly nudges a fellow commuter coming the opposite way. He stops and tuts at me from under the dripping hood of his ludicrous lime green parka. Jealous. Ignoring him, and deftly swivelling the hilt of my sturdily light weight Excalibur till it sits once again, loftily, above my kingly bonce, I make for the bus stop. After a brief wait on the rapidly puddling pavement (it really is drizzly), the bus arrives and I ready myself to embark. Bone dry.I push the button. Instantly the eight premium fibreglass ribs retract, and come to rest flush with each other at the runner hub. After a brief wait, I realise this will not propel the runner back down the high grade steel shaft as I had hoped, meaning I have to push it down myself, but it’s still pretty convenient. I smile to myself as I tuck my (already quite dry) bumbershoot neatly into its external dust case. “That’s British design for you.” I breathe. “Pretty ruddy convenient. Pretty ruddy good.”

I prefer to buy a quality umbrella, if only in an effort to move away from the throwaway culture of consumer goods. And living in the north of England an umbrella is an essential everyday item. When the time came to replace my well-worn Fulton model I decided to try something new and ordered the Balios travel umbrella in black. From opening the package I could tell Balios had invested time and effort into making the experience different with a focus on quality. The umbrella was simply but well packaged, with additional wrapping to protect the wood and metal handle. I like that it came in an outer pouch, which would help with storage and transit. The focus on quality continues to the umbrella itself, from the wood and metal handle, shaped so it can be gripped easily, to the metal snap fastener closure that is less likely to wear out than the standard Velcro ones. I’d say the size is half way between a standard compact umbrella and a golf umbrella. This gives a good level of shelter from the elements without the impracticality and frankly the anti social aspects of a golf umbrella. The automatic open and close function has a firm feel with an assertive and smooth opening, and reassuring click on closure. It’s a small thing but I also like that the storage cover has a tapered opening, meaning that you actually stand a good chance of getting the umbrella back into it following use – I usually discard this!Overall the Balios travel umbrella is well designed and an excellent quality product. At a price point comparable with my usual brand this stands head and shoulders above it.

Living as I do in the North West of England, an umbrella is as necessary as taking regular breaths. Like many (men) no the way into the city centre, I always think 'Ah it's never going to rain', but it inevitably does. Because golf umbrellas are such weapons on public transport, I always end up buying a cheap and nasty fold-up from the market when I get into town!No more.I was drawn to Balios via a friend and because I discovered they are designed in the UK . . . . . where it rains quite a lot! For starters, it arrived three days earlier than Amazon predicted. The umbrella is so quintessentially British, lovely design, in an outer sleeve which is itself then contained in a further outer sleeve. The handle is ergonomically wonderful, the auto-opening mechanism instantaneous and faultless and best of all for a portable fold-up, it has a suitably large enough circumference to keep the rain off a "well-proportioned" (OK, a bit overweight!) person such as myself! And after the rain, the umbrella doesn't fall apart when you shake the rain off it.All in all it has restored my faith in the fact that there still are small companies out there putting some thought and quality into their products. I am not used to having a quality fold-up umbrella. I guess I will now just have to!Well done Balios. I'll be more than happy to pass on my experience with your terrific product.(PS This umbrella would actually make a great gift - I can't believe I have just written that, but I'm being honest)

Living in Britain, the question of which umbrella to purchase is an important decision. After some deliberation I came across this travel umbrella by Balios and read through some of the reviews. I decided to try it out, and I thought I should leave one as well to help out any future buyers.Well, when the umbrella arrived, I was impressed by the presentation straight away. It came inside the protective covering of a water-repellent sleeve; useful for when you’re out and about and have to bring your umbrella inside without getting water everywhere. The design of the umbrella itself is truly elegant, for lack of a better word. The handle fits perfectly in your hand, and is crafted out of rosewood, capped on both ends by stainless steel. The design is timeless, and is just as beautiful and stylish today as it would be at any other time.In terms of its performance, the first time I tried it out I found the automatic open and close to be instantaneous, and the strength and resilience of the frame in high winds to certainly be better than any other umbrella which I’ve tried.Regarding it’s design, I don’t think that pictures can do it justice; without having it in front of you it’s hard to appreciate just how beautiful an object this is. I’m glad I decided on this umbrella, I know that I’ll be carrying it with me for many years to come and I’m certain that this is the right umbrella for me.

This folding umbrella has an impressively large and sturdy canopy for its size (about 1m) so keeps the rain off easily. I found that the opening mechanism is pretty tightly sprung, so much so that most of the water shoots off when reopening the umbrella inside to dry it - this does mean that it dries very quickly, but be aware that you'll spray water everywhere in the process! The wooden and stainless steel handle feels heavy and solid in the hand, and is probably the most comfortable umbrella handle I've come across so far. I was also very happy with the packaging that it came in - just a thick paper bag which can easily be recycled. The umbrella wasn't in a plastic bag,and came in a reusable fabric dust cover bag (like you might get with handbags/shoes) which is useful.Something to bear in mind - because of the longer wooden handle, this umbrella is 35cm long when closed and quite heavy for its size. This means that it is more difficult to fit into and carry around in a standard handbag than a more compact folded umbrella with a short plastic handle which I'm more used to taking around with me. However as it has a bigger canopy, better handle and is convenient with the auto open/close, I feel it's a fair trade-off.Overall I'm happy with this umbrella and feel that it will last longer than the small, cheap ones I've had in the past.

I bought this brolley after my previous one succumbed to the great british weather and ended up in the bin half way through a walk!I have to be honest and admit I have never paid more than around £10 tops for an umbrella, mostly due to the fact that they never last long and I can never find one when I need one. However since I gave up driving last year and decided to walk more and use public transport I have gone through 3 brolley’s (including one of my daughters) and so I decided to invest a little more this time since collectively the last 3 came to around £25!I chose this one mainly as it seemed like a quality brand and because it has a lovely polished wooden handle. It is not too heavy or big so it can go in my back pack and sit quietly until needed without taking up too much space. The best part however is that it pops up and down with a press of a button! The down part is a revelation since none of my other brolleys have done this, and also the closing part (after strong winds) is the critical breaking point since they all have slightly different mechanisms. This is a great little umbrella and has already braved the worst of the spring storms in the last week alone and survived intact. I have high hopes this will last a bit longer than the old ones!

This is an impressive brolly for the money. The handle has a lovely rich colour to it and smooth glossy finish. The brolly feels sturdy and has held its shape well in moderate wind. Open and close is quick and smooth. The brolly has a good balance. If you have big hands, like I do, I recommend this rosewood version over the finger notched wood version (which my wife has). I can get the whole of my hand onto the rosewood’s handle, but with the finger notched version, my index finger is half on the handle and half on the metal ring above it.Other differences: The rosewood has a wrist strap, while the finger notched has a zippered sleeve (my rosewood did not, contrary to the product description - mine is the same as the sleeve in the photo, which you can see has no zip). The zippered sleeve makes it easier to put the brolly back in the sleeve.Other than that, there is not much between them. Mechanism and cloth look identical. To recap: big hands or wanting a wrist strap, go rosewood. Wanting a better sleeve, go finger notched. Otherwise, go for the one you prefer the look of and enjoy a brolly that exudes quality and style.

This is the third umbrella I have bought from Balios, as I loved the first, but it was adopted by my partner, the second was a gift for my Dad. This time I went for the slightly more expensive version. In the last day of rain and wind this umbrella has worked very well. It is quite a large canopy for a compact umbrella and fits me and partner under it easily. The auto close feature is a lovely addition and is good when squeezing through small spaces in London. The wooden handle and chrome detailing make this feel real quality and the small Balios label is a nice touch, which I think makes it feel more premium. In the past I have bought cheap umbrellas which just break after not many uses (which I hate as it is such a massive waste)and as the old adage goes 'you buy cheap, you buy twice' so spend a little more on this umbrella and you won't be disappointed and you'll save money in the long run. I have also compared it to my friends £80+ compact umbrella, they look and feel pretty similar in quality to one another, but I actually prefer the wooden handle on this one.Highly Recommended.

Well I must say this brolly is most probably the best I have ever owned. After living abroad for many years I recently located to Northern Ireland, which rains A LOT! This is my 3rd umbrella in as many month, the other 2 turned inside out and snapped with the slightest bit of wind. This Balios brolly has not once flipped inside out and it's been extremely windy. It also came within an outer dust sheet, the kind you get with lovely bags and shoes, I thought that was a lovely touch. The brolly itself is strong, durable and very classically made. The handle is just beautiful and super smooth, unlike the clunky uncomfortable handles with the other brolly's I've used in the past. The size is well designed and 2 people could comfortably fit under perfectly,it opens and closes quickly and easily so you'll never be caught in a sudden downpour.Whilst hanging in my porch, I had a very lovely comment from the postman that described it as a lovely classic looking piece, so yes Balios has completely smashed the design and it's totally worth the price.

I do not have a happy story with most travel side umbrellas, most of which only last a few weeks, and either break under their own mechanisms or from the wind.I have had this for just under a week but this morning at the super bikes it saved me and my father in law. Thankfully I had put it in the car, so when the heavens opened I ran back to the car and grabbed it. It was the first time I used it and the button on the side opens the umbrella automatically with a very nice mechanism, but the whole makeup is honestly the most sturdy of travel umbrella I have seen, in fact it may be the most sturdy umbrella. Last year at the races I bought an umbrella and it lasted 30 minutes, this lasted all day,and where we sit is always really windy. It also has a very unique (in my experience ) feature of closing with the button press as well.If like me you have had to buy countless almost disposable umbrellas look no further, this one is sturdy, comfortable to hold and I am sure is going to last!

When I received the package, I couldn’t wait to open it and use it. The first feeling after I got the umbrella in my hand, it had a high-level appearance and it was a little heavier than the umbrella I used before. The handle is made of wood, the bottom is steel, the hand feels smooth and comfortable ,there have a small button that can be automatically opened by pressing ,It is very convenient that not need to push it by yourself in the future. The only drawback is that you have to use a little strength when closing the umbrella. I have bought it for more than a month and used it several times during the rainy days, the umbrella size is just right and it is very strong not easy to turn out in strong wind ,The umbrella fabric is thick and it dries quickly, the color of the Maroon I bought is also very easy to match my jacket. In short, It is the most satisfactory umbrella among the umbrellas I have used before, The price is also right. I am very happy to buy it!

Wow, I'm blown away, this looks really nice! The colours are exactly as shown and it's just super stylish. I could have bought the other model for a better grip for my aching hands, but I couldn't resist the style on this handle. The wrist band is a bonus, and it's easy from the label on the wrap around ribbon to see which way to wrap it (a problem I've often found with cheap umbrellas). The mechanism is brilliant. The only thing is that it's very tough to close for a person with an illness like myself and quite heavy. I also live in Wales so am a little concerned that it's best not to go out in stormy weather. From another review I'm also a bit concerned about rust so will try and keep it dry in the car.I’m also a bit unsure what the synthetic black cover it came in is for, especially as they say ‘no to plastic’ in the ad. But I'm generally really pleased to have purchased such a nice British product at such a good price - it looks more expensive.

As much as it pains me to share my experience using a Balios umbrella in JUNE – yes this is England – I must say I will never go back to using any other brand of umbrella.Sturdy, slimline and stylish, it’s everything I could possibly wish for from an umbrella. The solid wooden handle is comfortable to grip and the simple button press mechanism made battling a sudden downpour so easy. One quick press and my new – fantastically bright yellow brolly – was protecting me from every drop. But the best bit, a second quick press and the umbrella’s canopy instantly collapsed making popping into Costa for my morning coffee a breeze.I don’t think I’ll ever leave the house without it!It slips into my handbag with ease and is the perfect travel umbrella – especially for a city worker like myself.Although this is at the top end of my usual umbrella budget, I can honestly say that this umbrella is worth every penny. I highly recommend this product!

I’ve had a few (and lost a few) umbrellas over the years, the last of which was from Fulton which lasted pretty well but the time had come to try something new. From opening this umbrella it instantly felt high quality, it was reassuringly weighty but yet not feeling heavy to hold. It has a real rosewood handle with a lovely feeling of real wood grain (not some cheap stained mdf stuff). The open and close function works well, just be sure not to push it closed and use the button as it did stick as I wasn’t using it properly at first. The ribs of the canopy are plenty bendy but strong enough to feel sturdy enough to brave a brisk wind, and the canopy itself is full with no vent in black. It has a popper closeure and comes complete with a thick cover that should easily keep the drips away from taking it in after using it. Over all a good quality umbrella and a really good price point, I’ll just try not to lose this one.

I’ve had this umbrella a while now and it still doesn’t fail to amaze me how aesthetically pleasing it is. The materials and the mechanism are very impressive given the reasonable price tag. As a fashion accessory I really can’t fault this umbrella. However, when it comes to using the umbrella, it does not quite live up to its ‘wind-resistant’ status. It’s not the worst in coping with winds but I’d be lying if I said I was completely at ease using the umbrella with winds. The umbrella is able to withstand mild winds but even so, it’s not quite comfortable with that and I’ve used umbrellas which have felt much sturdier and were within a similar price bracket.Overall,it is a lovely umbrella that certainly looks more expensive than it is. However, it is not the best in withstanding winds. I’m happy to keep mine for the time being but I would have been happy to pay £10 for it to be sturdier in withstanding wind.
