I recently bought my second Fulton Open & Close umbrella, after my first one finally gave up the ghost. But it had an exceedingly good run of at least 15 years (I bought it in either 1998 or 1999, when the handle was a medium grey colour).By the time I realised it needed replacing, the open and close mechanism still worked reasonably well (albeit not as smoothly as when it was brand new). However, the aluminium ribs had corroded and, where the rib joints touched, the polyester canopy had completely worn away (partly my fault, as I lost the protective sleeve a few years prior). So, with some trepidation, I ordered a new one, fearing that the quality had severely dropped (if various reviews, over the internet, are anything to go by). Although I've only had the new one for a couple of weeks, I'm delighted to report that both the quality and build are almost the same - they even feel identical.Upon receiving the new umbrella, I compared it with the older one. After spending some time inspecting them, I could only detect two significant differences:1) The handle - it's now rubber instead of plastic, which is a great enhancement. I'm also glad that the colour is now black, instead of medium grey, as that's the colour I originally would have preferred when I purchased the first one.2) The upper ribs - like the lower ribs (i.e. the ones closer to the runner or centre), the upper ribs used to be all aluminium - now they're partly made from fibreglass. According to Fulton, this change is supposed to "enhance wind resistance", so only time will tell. However, one thing's for sure - there should now be less corrosion in the long-term.With regards to all the complaints about how it performs against strong winds, this umbrella never claimed to be that sturdy (it even states this on the accompanying tag, if you take a closer look). However, I feel that many people fail to hold their umbrellas at a certain angle, to avoid possible wind damage. It's well worth remembering, if you want your umbrella to last that little bit longer.Anyway, for now, I'm going to give it four stars and see how things go (and I also have to agree with others that it's a little pricey these days - I'm sure it was around half the current retail price, back in the late '90s).Hopefully, I should be able to get a good ten years out of it before needing yet another replacement.UPDATE (December 2020):Six years on and I still have the same umbrella, which is still functioning fine. However, I've decided to keep my rating at four due to an annoying handle flaw.A year or two after buying the umbrella, I noticed black stains on my hands after using it. I soon discovered that this was due to the handle, which isn't made from rubber but plastic (like my first one), with a thin coating of some rubber-type material. I eventually ended up removing the sticky coating with the help of some rubbing alcohol.I suppose Fulton thought it would be a good idea to provide the handle with a better grip quality, but forgot that persistent body heat will melt the coating over time!

I really like it, the umbrella opens up fully with a press of a button but right after you unlock the strap. It also closes as well with the same button but leaves open the mechanical metal that holds the umbrella with the handle open for you to manually close it.The good thing is that it is very sturdy and well made, probably last me for a long time. The bad thing is that I am a short guy and this umbrella does not compliment me well because the inner top just about touches my head sometimes. The length of the handle bar is not long enough.I don't know much about umbrellas but the one I got is in small size. Maybe I should've requested a medium size but I didnt see the size options.Overall satisfaction is satisfied ?.It keeps me from not getting wet and I think the umbrella won't break anytime soon.

I have been using Fulton umbrellas for many years now and my current umbrella I have owned for at least 10, most likely longer than this and the automatic open / close functionality finally gave up.One improvement I was searching for in my next umbrella was a more ergonomic handle as my current one is a rounded rectangular type shape and can be uncomfortable after holding for long periods. This Fulton Open & Close 3 Umbrella is exactly what I was looking for with its rounded handle. The open / close mechanism is the same as my previous model and so I am very happy with the purchase. Both my previous umbrellas gave me many dry days out over the years and so I am expecting this to repeat that. For me Fulton are a reliable brand and I never look elsewhere for an umbrella.

I recently purchased this umbrella as a replacement for an identical model which I mislaid (but was still working perfectly). The canopy size is excellent considering its compact dimensions. The auto-opening and shaft mechanisms are precise and highly-durable, as is the rib assembly. The easy-grip handle is an added bonus. It may appear relatively expensive, but it is built and designed to last for years...unlike my cheaper previous purchases, which ended up in litter bins once the wind-speed exceeded 10 mph. Top marks to Fulton.

Excellent mechanism and a good size. The downsides for me were the handle which feels cheap and is too small for my hands (I'm no Joe Hart if you're wondering), plus as others have commented it blows out in windy weather, however they do other products if wind if our concern, no pun intended..I had and unfortunately left in boots the curved handle variety of this which I thought was slightly better, more sturdy, however again the handle was too small to get your hand into comfortably.

I think this product is ideal for putting in your brief case, backpack etc., as it is very compact yet seems to be of very good quality.Unlike some other umbrellas I have used in the passed. This does do the job very well.In response to some of the bad reviews, it does clearly say it is okay in mild winds.Personally I find there are very few umbrellas that would cope with very strong winds, and the ones that do are considerably more expensive. So in short very good value for money

Very good quality and coverage size for a compact umbrella. Works very efficiently and provides better coverage than the ultra compact type umbrellas.I find it is a good compromise between ultra compact and full size umbrellas, and fits easily in north face ruck sack side pocket, so its always on hand for those commutes into central London for work. With the British summer will it rain or shine, you will always be prepared with one of these in your bag.

First got in 2010; lasted 4 years, though all sorts of rain, wind and snow (in Manchester, so all the time, too). I remember walking through town on a particularly windy day and being the only person with a surviving umbrella. When it did finally give out, it was from a gust of wind so strong that it bent the actual frame of the umbrella (which is nowhere near thin). Immediately rebought the same umbrella. Always do recommend to others.

Bought as a gift and had to be swapped for a smaller size. The umbrella itself seemed very sturdy and had a bit more weight than a usual small umbrella, which combined with a slightly larger size means this will struggle to fit in anything other than a rucksack when transporting it around so it's not super portable. Never got the the chance to test in rain but would be confident it would be great and suitable in fairly strong winds.

A lovely brolly. I am so tired of telescopic brollies blowing inside out so decided to go for something more expensive hoping it was more strongly made. That would seem to be the case here as this brolly is strong and feels as though it will last a long time. It only folds once which may be it's strength. The tinier telescopics which fold twice seem much more vulnerable. I am hoping quality counts and this one will last me ages.

I waited until it rained to write this review.Comfortable wooden handle - Allows you to hang the umbrella in your forearm.Poor paint coat in handle. (One Star Down)Good thick coverage.Good and strong opening mechanism.High wind resistance.Withstand inversion pretty well... And after seeing right next to me two guys struggling with their inside out turned umbrellas... I was delighted in given them a Mr. Bean look.

A great little umbrella that'll save you in a pinch. No, it isn't going to stand up to a gusty day but it will keep you dry when everyone else is getting drenched. The open and close button is great when you haven't got both hands free, which, to be fair, is most of the time. It's small enough to fit neatly in a side pocket of even the smallest rucksack (I have a Booq Mamba Squeeze which is very small).

I have had a lot of good use out of my Fulton umbrellas, at least until I leave them somewhere! This model has a useful automatic open mechanism that is fast to deploy. Collapsing it back is done manually, once the button releases the lock - pretty straight-forward. The handle is soft to touch and comfortable to hold.Materials are good quality, and should provide a decent length of service.

I am writing this review based on my brolly which I have had for 10 years now. I have lost the little sleeve it comes in and the button is beginning to stick a bit but apart from this, this is the only brolly I have had to last this long with normal use. I was wondering whether they still did them with the button and saw this so I know I can get a replacement when the time comes!

I've used this for 10 months now, and it is still in very good condition. The wind does cause it to flip (although less likely than other umbrellas). However, the handle is made of very solid material, so it would not snap in the wind. So far the fabric is still 100% attached to the branches. Worth the money if you are careful not to lose umbrellas.
