I was rather curious as to how this was going to actually work whilst maintaining watertight integrity and actually being listenable. Well, Finis have managed to make a player that does work for the job intended.I will have to say that I do not do millions of lengths of the pool daily. What I usually do is if working overseas and a pool is available I'll swim for about ten minutes until I get bored. In the gym which, I use every day I put on a Sony Sports MP3 player and I can tune out the world around me and concentrate on the exercise and never lose focus. Swimming is, as we all know is supposed to be one of the best ways to improve fitness but I find it mind numbing after a while. So,when I got this to review I figured that it might just be the thing to keep me going a bit longer. And it does because I'll swim for a number of songs which in the end can add up to 20 to 30 minutes easily. Now the actual player is fairly large so you are not going to have to be bashful about wearing a Star Trek cast off clamped to you head. People will wonder and they will ask.First off, loading music - the usual stuff, WMA, MP3 unprotected and not lossless - is simply drag and drop. If you have your media in lossless then use Media Player and sync so that it automatically reformats into fixed bitrate when transferring. It will of course work on PC and Mac.Once on you simply turn on the player and press the play key. Normal functions are in place but of course there is no screen - not that you would be able to see it in use - so picking a song is a matter of jumping through using the skip function. Could be slow if you have a lot of songs on there. Personally, I simply load up the player and stick it and leave it on random. I notice that the sound level stays at the set point you had when you turned it off which is a good thing as the buttons are multi function so it's easy to end up skipping around the songs. The design of this uses bone vibrations to transfer the sound to you hearing centre. Basically, you clamp this to your head and the large sound surface plays music that travels through your skull to the ear. It works well although even on the highest volume setting you won't find yourself anywhere near deafened. And because of the design, there will be a fair bit of noise heading away from you as well on the higher volume levels, so one would have to take that into consideration if there are others close by in the pool.Music quality is decent enough. Not going to challenge the high end hi-fi headphones, but clear and bright. Maybe a bit low on bass but I suspect that using bone transfer this may just be how it is. Overall pretty good all things considered. You need to use goggles as well. This MP3 player is held in place by the goggle strap so you can't use this as a casual player when dipping into a leisure pool.If you are considering this then reality is that you are a dedicated swimmer. It is a very focused item that is only for that purpose. If you rarely use the pool then it would probably fall into the category as 'Nice to have.' However if you are a regular long distance swimmer then a brilliant thing.

I compare this product to another one I use in the pool. The other product comes with the "classic" earbuds and the usual troubles one can encounter using it: no matter how fit they are to your ears, eventually the water will protrude under the plugs and you'll need to stop to re-fit them.Finis duo eliminates the problem by using a so-called "bone conduction audio method". The speakers are held pressed on the temple bones by the goggles' strap. On the left speaker are the controls, very easy to reach and to use, once you get accustomed to them. The sound is clear and loud enough, even louder when both the player and the ears are immersed. Risking to repeat myself I have to emphasize that the sound quality (or intensity)doesn't suffer if some water enters into your ears. The memory is large enough to store hours and hours of audio content in mp3 and wma formats. Those were the "plus-es" of the Finis Duo; as for the "minus" parts, I'd mention two:1. You can't make a playlist; it would be useful to organize your music according to the training routine: let's say you'd want to listen to some slower tunes during warm-up and cool-down and a more alerte/motivating ones during peak effort. You'll have to make do with whatever songs you loaded, played in a row or randomly.2. The battery is advertised to last up to 7 hours; however, I never got mine to last past 3 and a half. I can tell that because I swim precisely 90 minutes daily and - if I forget to recharge the Finis Duo for two consecutive days - the third swimming session will be veeeery noiseless :).Overall: a very good to excellent product.Read full review...

First off, the Duo underwater mp3 player is a little chunky looking at 8cm’s long by 4cm’s wide and does look a bit weird at first unless you wear a swimming cap which can hide it a little.Charing and moving music on and off the player is done via a USB that you plug in to a laptop or computer. Once plugged in to your computer you simply drag and drop your music tracks or audiobooks similar to how you would use a memory card or USB flash drive. It’s all very simple.Battery life is up to 7 hours so you’ll get a good few days swimming out of the MP3 Player and storage is 4gb, which is plenty of space for music. 4Gb will hold up to 1000 music tracks. On the player itself there are only 4 buttons.On/Off/Play and Pause are all controlled on the main centre button, then you have forward, rewind buttons either side of the central button and at the bottom you have a shuffle button which will jump randomly through tracks if you’d rather not know which track are coming up next. The buttons are very easy to control and although the player looks basic, it’s perfect for using in water where the controls are by your ear. You really don’t need any other buttons. It was a little tricky to get in the correct position on my goggles strap and did take a few minutes. It’s very similar to the clasp where you would adjust your googles to make the strap tighter or looser. You get an amazing sound underwater and it does help stop the boredom factor kicking in. Try adding an audiobook on to the player, I found it very easy to follow the audiobook and quite relaxing.

my old finis neptune gave up after nearly 3 years being used on average 3 times a week so i coukdnt complain however when reading the reviews on the new model and meeting someone in the pool who had sent their neptune back as it packed in after 1 session i decided to go for this model instead. Well it does the job but i find attaching it very difficult and it has to be done before the pool so you can see what you are doing. It also pulls out the goggles from the head too so i have discovered it can only be attached to the outer strap or water pours into the goggles. I dont feel the sound is as clear either. The magnetic connection to recharge is a bit hit and miss and it plays rather than recharges when plugged in so it needs turning on and off until it decides to charge rather than play. So not as good as my beloved old neptune but you get music whilst swimming! so .... finis what did you do to the neptune to give it such bad reviews?? This product is a sad replacement for me i am afraid but still better than any 'in ear' mp3.

This product gets around the problem of earphones popping out of your ears. Out of the water the sound is quite poor, but it really comes into its own under water. My friend assures me that no one else but me can hear my music. I struggle to get them right on my cheekbone as there doesn't seem enough space between the eyepiece of my goggles and my ear. If they are too far forward they lift the edge of my goggles off my face and I get a water leak. Because they are not in-ear, I get a lot of environmental sound interference, like bubbles noises, especially as I breath out underwater, but I am getting used to that now. The controls are easy. When charging I use an elastic band to hold it steady in the dock.I have had to convert music files from iTunes into MP3 format so that they are compatable. There is room for improvement here; the set could be slimmer and the docking charger needs work. But overall, this is a good player and has made my 100 length non stop swim much more enjoyable, and I have tried quite a few other players.

Really Good!! I've struggled to find a good underwater MP3 player for a few years now. I've tried the Sony Walkman and a few other cheaper MP3's and been disappointed with bad sound quality with ear buds constantly falling out. I was keen to know exactly how this 'bone-conducting' worked and was surprised that you can hear it even if it's not attached to your head (I was imagining vibration waves that can only be picked up once placed against your head - you can call me stupid!) and I was expecting a duff sound experience. However, when you put your head under the water, the sound is fantastic!! I generally swim 40 - 60 lengths 3-4 times a week with a combo of breaststroke/freestyle/backstroke and I never even noticed a difference with the sound quality while coming up for air.I love it. Yet to see how the charging goes, but if I place it on the charger every night - it's surely going to have enough to see me through my next swim!

This is a very basic MP3 player. In some ways, I suppose it is almost yesterday's technology. However, what makes this great is the ability to use it underwater and listen to music as you swim. I swim a lot. I often find it boring swimming up and down the lanes. I did not think I would really want to listen to music when swimming and I suppose I was somewhat sceptical about how it would work. Well, it does work! It is very simple to use. Charge it with a USB and load the tracks on in the usual way. The player itself is very simple but when swimming, you don't need more. The sound is very good for the type of player it is and it really does sound good when swimming.I found it a little fiddly when attaching it to my goggles the first time but when I got used to it, no problem. An impressive piece of equipment.

I had a waterproof sony walkman, it was great in the gym and for about 2 lengths in the pool, then water got in my ears and I couldn't hear it.The finis duo is brilliant, swam over 5km and had music all the way.I didn't notice a depreciation in sound quality when breathing, but I breath on my left side, think the treble is on the right so might be why some people report a loss of sound. Also, some people reported a difficulty charging it, the magnet seems reasonably strong and I've not found this to be a problem. For me this is amazing, finally I have music when I swim.

Fantastic when it works. It's great when swimming but charging it and loading tracks is problematic; it doesn't connect to the cable/ dock properly and constantly ejects its self. It often takes a lot of fiddling around to get it to charge/ connect to the computer. I've found the only way to get it to work tape it to a table to get it to charge, but it rarely connects to my Mac. Finis suggested a reset which didn't help and cleaning the contacts, which I now do constantly. It sometimes takes a lot of pressing of buttons to get it to turn on in the pool as well.

These are brilliant for swimming and I can’t understand why people write negative reviews. You need to make sure you put them as close to your ears as possible and wear the correct ear plugs. I wasn’t impressed when I first used them but I have adjusted them and changed my ear plugs and there perfect. They will never be like listening to my Bose ear phones at home but come on you’re in water. I would definitely recommend these and I swim everyday and I have tried all sorts.

The product is flawless you just drop the files in, you play it and play it at once. I had the same first generation and it lasted for 9 years. I bought this with closed eyes. It is very easy to use, and comes with a charging stand. He came to Greece a week after ordering and had a flawless packaging so that he would not hit. It was wrapped in bubble wrap and in another box. I really have no reason not to recommend this product or shop to others.

I had some trouble with this. It took me ages to get a good result, but it was worth the effort. Once I got the positioning right, the sound is incredible. This now accompanies me for my weekly plough up and down for 70 lengths of my local pool. Loading your music is easy. Nice to have a dedicated device for swimming, so I can stop imperilling my iPod.

Having read many reviews of different headphones that I could use whilst swimming, I originally purchased a pair that was cheaper and as soon as I dived into the pool they fell off! So after more research I decided to invest in a pair that was more expensive and wow these are amazing! You do pay for what you get!Highly recommended!

I have been swimming 6 days a week for 24 years and tried every underwater player. This one has changed my swimming life. It is brilliant and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Make sure the goggles you use with it are hinged at the edge otherwise they could leak. Charge mine once a week and last for hours of swimming.

To everyone that has problems with the item not connecting or not charging anymore, i received a solution from Finis technical suport that worked for me: simply hold 40 seconds the shuffle button and your Duo will start working again. As soon as I'll use it swimming I'll update my review
