This fin was recommended to me by Mike Maric, one of the foremost experts on monofins in the world and a trainer for some of Italy's top freedivers. He came to Canada to do a monofin workshop with our freediving club in the spring of 2013. Although everyone who participated in the seminar possessed a carbon or fibreglass monofin, we rarely used them. Instead we refined the freediving undulation technique with small fins, the more flexible the better. This is where the Finis Foil Monofin excels, though I did not buy one until after the seminar. As I practiced the exercises that he gave us after the workshop, I could see why he recommended it. The fin is very comfortable,so one can train with it for long periods of time, as opposed to custom made fibreglass/carbon fins, which are made to fit very tightly. Use of neoprene socks ( or half-socks), however, is recommended since the the opening where the toes come through tends to chafe. In my case, the strap at the back of the foot tends to slide off when I turn and push off the wall. The blade is made of the very same flexible rubber, so you don't move ahead in the pool unless your technique comes from the core of the body. This is a good thing. With a carbon monofin it is very easy to get by with bad technique, simply because it packs such force. A thrust from the knees that might work with my 4kg. monster of custom fibreglass fin, just doesn't go anywhere with the Finis Foil Monofin, and this ultimately improves my technique with the former. After I bought my Finis foil monofin, many of those whom I train with got one also, especially those in the advanced practice sessions. It is now integrated into our weekly practices. Paired with a frontal snorkel you can work on undulation laps at the surface and forget about time - makes for a great abdominal and lumbar workout. It is also very affordable, so someone who doesn't want to spend 300+ dollars on a custom monofin can get this one instead and acquire the proper technique first.

Received this product from Amazon, however the sizing seems to be a bit odd. Instead of having XS, S, M, L as sizing, please provide length and dimension so that international customer will not struggle to figure out the correct sizing. Although Amazon does pay back the shipping for return, however the shipping cost returned was only the actual postage paid. For country like Australia, there is no way we could ship this product back to USA for $8.Update: 17th July 2012I am glad Amazon refunded the shipping cost for returning the item back to USA, the cost that is almost the same as the full purchase price of the item. Excellent service Amazon!!As for the product, once I got the right size for my boy using the refund credit, as soon as he started dolphin kick on his first swim, I noticed his feet were no longer bending too much back which was a good sign and kicks were so much smoother. Last week when he had his 2nd try, he was zooming just like a dolphin, something he could never achieved with a normal 2 piece fin.Strongly recommended for anyone wanting to improve their dolphin kick.

Size Ordered: SmallMy feet: Women's 6.5I'm 16, and I've wanted to make my own mermaid tail and improve my dolphin kick at once, which is why I've ordered this monofin.I've read several complaints about the sizing of the monofin, which made me cautious of my purchase, but since my feet were small and narrow, I didn't size up and bought a Small. The fit was snug and perfect! My order came this week and I tried it out yesterday. I swam twice as fast with the fin than practicing the dolphin kick alone! It smoothly sent me sailing across the water which made me feel like a mermaid! Also, my heels got scraped last week, yet the monofin didn't scrape against my tendon areas. Definitely using this monofin for my tail!:)Warning: If your shoe size is above 6.5 feet and/or wide (not straight like the pic above), then do NOT choose Small. Since the monofin slipped from one of my feet during my first use, I've found out this was the perfect size. I'm planning to create a YouTube video for this review, so I might link it to here.

We bought this to feed my mermaid fixation I've had, oh, all my life. :) My son (10 years old, size 6 shoe) and I (size 8 shoe) trade off using it in the pool and it provides good power with a dolphin kick. Easy to slip on and off due to the large stretchy heel bands, the only trick to this is remembering that you can't walk in it. However, it's easy to sit on a step of the pool and put it on, then mermaid your way across the bottom of the pool at top speed. It also works to swim sideways and along the surface of the water, so you can get in a good workout. This is made of good quality materials and doesn't show any signs of wear despite frequent use.

I FREAKING LOVE THESE~! They are so fun. I can't figure out how to go forward, but I can go backwards in them and they are awesome!!! I have to limit how many laps I do with these because they are so fun, I would end up doing my whole time with them and that is not really a workout. You go fast and create huge undercurrents. They are hilarious the first time you get them on and have to hop to your lane or whatever. If you really want to enjoy your life you will get these. It takes a while how to figure out how to be a mermaid/man/ever, but once you get the hang of it, they are a blast. Go dorky or go home! Life is for enjoying!!!

I absolutely love my Monofin. It definitely helps me to have a great workout while in the pool. For those curious about sizes, I generally wear a woman's shoe size 8 1/2 and with swim socks the medium sized Monofin fit perfectly. If you wear anything about a woman's shoe size 9 the medium may be too snug for your feet. The only thing I would say though, is to buy a pair of swim socks. One of my friends has this very same monofin too. She said she made the mistake of wearing it without swim socks and it rubbed blisters all over her feet. With the swim socks I have had no problem with mine doing that at all.

Great product, sturdy. Good for a first monofin.. BUT I was a little concerned about 1. the sizing, as it was just off enough for me to buy neoprene socks for it, and still it was a tiny bit big; and 2. after snorkeling with it, the strap broke and it cannot be fixed.. Mind you, that may have been user error on my part, being under water and not seeing what i was doing, but still, for the sturdiness of the material for the rest of the fin, the straps should be a tin bit stronger. Hope you guys had better luck with it. I wouldn't detour others from buying this product just for the small hiccup i had.

The first time I'd ever seen a monofin used was in the documentary "The Cove" and thought they looked like a perfect way to swim. I just purchased this monofin a few months ago and am enjoying it. You are definitely forced to use different muscles while swimming. The only way to describe it would be an undulating, fluid swimming motion. I'm sure this will be great for general toning and exercise and a nice step into using monofins for freediving. My fin rubs my feet in certain spots so some buyers (like me) may need to purchase diving socks. Definitely would recommend.

It propels very well, but for those with narrow feet. i'd reccomend wearing socks with it. not neccesarily diving socks, just normal ankle socks. Because wearing socks with the fin makes it stay on your feet. Also, unlike the finis wave monofin, this monofin doesn't bend over time. it is made of very good materials and was great for the purpose I needed it. Also, one thing that may help you is that a finis foil medium fit's a women's size 8 and a half, which was great for me and will give you room to grow

these fit my women's size 7.5 shoe, and i have a wide toe area. i don't wear socks, and my feet didn't hurt at all. they stayed on my feet. they have an "s" on them, i guess to mean size small.i also got the finis wave monofin, which is bigger, and it was nice, too, and has an adjustable strap that would fit any size foot.am keeping both pairs.see my review on the other fin, for more information on my first experience monofinning.oh, i'm half FINnish, so maybe that brought me luck!

A little pricey but we've tried several "mermaid fins" for my 5 year old and 8 year old daughters and the other ones are cheap and break, this fin is bendable and does not crack although my kids are not wild about the yellow. Look up the size chart for the fin. My 5 year old wears a xs and 8 year old wears a s. She also wears a pair of socks with hers to keep it on snug. This is her second fin (she started out with an xs too) and I'll keep getting this exact one as they keep growing!

Very cool. Only problem for me was I ordered the XL thinking that my size 12 footsies would be taken care of. Usually in these situations no matter what I order, everything is too small. In this case, I actually have a little to much wiggle room. This is a problem only because of potential irritation from rubbing your toes against the toe opening. I bought thin rubber scuba shoes and they are helping. I'm certain I'm just going to order a large and see if they accommodate my feet.

I am currently using this as a training tool for a HS swim team for learning to butterfly kick. It's working fairly well, although it places a lot of torque on the ankles. Unlike the other sizes, for some reason the Medium I ordered stank so badly I've had to keep it in my back garage. Even after several uses this continues to be a problem. The other sizes not so much. I would buy again for the training tool, but it would be helpful if they could eliminate the odor!

I've only swam in this a few times, without my fabric tail on and only the monofin, which went perfectly well. I'm not a professional swimmer, and only swam for about 20 minutes with it on, but as far as I can tell it seems durable, to fit well on a women's size 7, and to be comfortable.I have tried the monofin on along with my XS Gen 1 Finfolk neoprene tail, and it was able to fit into the casing, so I can only assume it would work well with that.

I got my delivery super fast, in one week, compared to the estimated almost one month :DThe monofin is nice to swim in, easy to do tricks, comfortable (however I recommend to order bigger size, I have eu 39 feets and narrow, still size "S" was extremly thight. Also, I dont know if its standard but both my monofin came with minor material bruises (like bubble in it and uneven cut) but I guess it wont affect the use just the appearance :)
