The Basque composer Juan Chrisóstomo Arriaga, who started to play the violin from a very early age, in his own way falls into a period between Mozart and Beethoven, being born on what would have been the former’s 50th birthday and dying in 1826 just one year before Beethoven’s death. These three string quartets of 1824 represent the peak of his meagre output which included a symphony and a couple of overtures, and an octet, as well as some vocal items, including an opera.For a person who died before the age of 20 the three string quartets are remarkable pieces for a 16 year old to have written. When he was 15 his father sent him to Paris, where he studied under Cherubini and others at the Paris Conservatoire.
