Though I don't have a lot of experience with good rain gear to compare to I can compare it to all those thin nylon plastic coated jackets out there. Well not really there is no comparison. Even the "good ones" fail compared to this jacket. I work outside, rain or shine, during all four seasons in Maine. In my younger years I didn't mind getting wet, now, I freeze to death and have a miserable day. So I decided it was time to dress properly. This jacket is not just a rain jacket, you could wear it as an every day jacket, and it's tough enough and made very well and could even be a regular work coat (FYI the same can be said for the Shoreline Bibs). It does not build up heat and humidity, though I have yet to wear it in 90 degree, 93% humidity Maine August. But when it arrived I put it and the bibs on and wore them in my 70 degree house for two hours doing normal things. I never got hot or clammy. It feels like a really heavy thick jacket, and it is as far as toughness, but the weight doesn't equal insulation. A note on sizing, I would generally wear a large, but I wanted this for four seasons in the colder months I wear a lot of layers. So I got the XL thinking I would need the space. Well I have the space alright lol. So to sum that up, order your normal size, you do not need to consider layering in your size choice. I'm tall with long arms, the sleeves are perfect if not a hair to long, the body has a bit to much extra space in the XL. I'm around 200-210lbs, 6'1, I feel the Large would have been a perfect fit.So far I have worn it through two nine hour rainy work days, one day was the all day, slow dreary drizzle that nobody likes. Jacket laughed it off.Second day was more of a shower all day, with wind. Again the jacket laughed it off.The only somewhat negative thing I've noticed which really isn't an issue for me, but might be for some depending on what your doing when you want to wear it. After being in all day rain, the jacket gains some weight. You don't get wet or damp, but the outer shell of the jacket does soak up water which makes it's way down the jacket and drips off, the harder the rain the heavier the jacket. Although this is a great way for the jacket to be rugged and be well waterproof at the same time, it has two issues, one the weight might be an issue for some and two, water pulls heat away from your body. The more water there is in the jacket the colder you get. This can be solved by layering, but can be difficult in some temperature ranges when trying to work. However, the coldness did not become an issue for me until later in the day when I was getting tired. Now a word on the toughness. I work in a Plant nursery, trees, shrubs, perennials I am the senior crew person. I spend my days wrestling root balls, climbing around in bushes, scraping through trees, tromping through mud, carrying anything from paper work to concrete blocks to a daisy for grandma. I work around heavy machinery and dangerous equipment. I run, walk, bend, climb, jump, lift, pull, pickup, put down, carry, and most of it is heavy, dirty, physical, wet, demanding work so all of my work gear gets very extensive testing.Order your regular jacket size, and you will not regret buying this jacket. I don't regret a single dollar spent and I got a size to big so.

Ordered XXL (I normally wear XL) in black. While I could have gone down to the XL, I’m glad I got the XXL so I can wear sweatshirts & heavy fleece under it. Also, I prefer things a little loose anyway.Get this coat! It’s worth every penny. The way it’s constructed, I should get many years out of it.What I love:1.) Arms are just right both in width & length.2.) Fits great across my shoulders & chest. I don’t feel restricted.3.) It’s longer in the back so covers my bum.4.) It zips and buttons!5.) The material feels substantial. It’s some sort of canvas, yet it’s not stiff.6,) The hood isn’t just for looks.. it actually works.. and it’s detachable. Though I don’t see the need to detach it since it lays flat.7.)Pockets! Pockets everywhere!8.) It’s dressy enough that I can wear it to the office, yet rugged enough to also wear on the field.9.) It does have thumb hole sleeves, but they aren’t stiff and can easily be pushed back into the sleeves when you don’t want to use them & they’re not in the way.10.) It’s a raincoat. A very cool looking & functional rain coat. But also a winter coat, I think. I will wear a fleece under it during the winter. What I don’t like about it:1.) Nothing. I don’t have a bad thing to say about this coat!Thank you, Carhartt, for making clothes for us ladies!UPDATE: Three years later..I'm still in love with this coat and wear it near daily during the fall, winter and spring months here in Texas. While it is not a winter coat per se, you can layer fleece under it and still use it as a winter coat. Why? Because the outside does a fantastic job blocking not only rain, but wind, too! Surprisingly, Texas gets more wind than anyplace else I've been and it cuts through you. However, wearing this coat? Not a problem! You stay warm and toasty.I've also washed it several times (hung to dry - no dryer) and it's held up just like new.Thinking about buying another color. Really want the green one, but it's out of stock. Please restock and I'll buy it! :)

I absolutely love this cute coat!! I found it in our local farm supply store for $150, and wanted to buy it sooooooo bad, but bought my son a birthday present instead... darn kids! LOL! I came home and looked on Amazon and found it! New it was $129, and I happened to see there was a used one for $89 so I jumped on it! It came perfectly packaged, still had tags on it and was in perfect condition! I have no idea what was used about it, but I sure am happy with this purchase!! As for the coat--it is excellent quality that you would expect from Carhartt! Very nice heavier quality and I know will last forever. I bought the XL, and I am 5:6 and 170lbs, and it fits perfect! Maybe just a titch too big,but otherwise perfect! I wanted it to come down far enough to cover my stomach, which it does, but just barely, that is the only thing I wish was just a few inches longer. It comes down to the bottom of my zipper on my jeans, the back is a bit longer. I love the end of the sleeves, they have a stretchy material with a thumb hole that will prevent cold air from going up the sleeve. This coat has pockets all over! If you need more pockets than this coat has, you either have too much junk, or need to get a huge purse! :) I got the dark wine color, and it is a beautiful plum/dark brownish color, not a bright obnoxiously loud color, but a very pretty earthy plum color. I was torn btw the olive green and the wine, but got the wine and love it! Wish I could afford both! :) I could not be happier with this coat and I highly recommend it! It is replacing my winter coat, and I live in northern Wisconsin so temps get way way way below 0, and this will keep me warm, and keep out the wind! The hood is perfect too!! Love it!! :)

I am an electrical contractor and I needed a rugged jacket that would stand up to rain, wind, and abuse in general. I have purchased many different clothes from many different manufactures in my 14 years in the trade, and I can say that in general Carhartt products are the best for my use. So when I needed a jacket that was waterproof, I went to REI and looked at Patagonia, Colombia and others. First those jackets seemed expensive and mostly I was unimpressed by how light and cheep they seemed. Then I started looking on-line and found this Carhartt jacket. I was hesitant at first after reading some of the reviews, but I am glad I went through with the purchase. It is by far the best jacket I have ever purchased. It is not bulky, yet it is make out of what looks like Cordura. As it states it is weatherproof. So I tested it in a rain storm yesterday. I was on a service call on a roof fixing an electrical problem at an apartment complex. I had the hood on and the drawstrings tight, also the drawstrings around the bottom of the jacket keep it snug. I was not wet at all. The water just beads up on the outside of the jacket, like a car with a good wax job. Its has three zippered outside pockets that work great, and have tabs on them for ease of use. I had a check in the "map" pocket that did not get wet at all. It is comfortable to wear and flexible enough to work in. I ordered a large and the sizes seem to run big, but I can also wear a nice thick sweatshirt underneath. I am planning on purchasing more of these and putting my company logo on the front and giving them to my best customers.Bottom line is this is a great jacket, rugged, waterproof, and comfortable and I can tell it will last along time!

Okay so...first off, only 4 stars due to the sleeves not longer - these are more of your fitted dress shirt kinda sleeves and same applies to the length. While neither are bad in anyway I was just expecting with a coat they'd be a little longer especially given the reason we're wearing it. But then I think the makers of the jacket had in mind people would probably wear longer or just bigger items under the jacket.Leading into my second point, and why the jacket is great - the overall fit. I am a little familiar with carhartt sizing due to have purchased their stuff in the past. And given being 5"11ish/250+ and being called "densely built" I have a hard time finding a good fit.My problem areas are typically in the shoulders, chest and upper back. But with carhartt stuff, this isn't an issue. In fact, an XL which I bought with this jacket and the quick duck one, there's even added room for a hoodie and if it was really cold probably another crewneck sweater or similar under the hoodie.Third, the value of the coat - yeah, seems like a lot at first but since I live in the lower Hudson Valley area in NY it does get cold, not Buffalo cold though, and rains a bit. So this will absolutely be great for mid-Autumn through mid-Spring then I'll get something just a little bit lighter as this jacket isn't lightweight but it's not what you'd call midweight either. It's definitely got substance to it.In any case, this jacket is great for myself and what I need it for and where I live. I'd most definitely recommend you give it a shot, especially since Amazon sells and ships it so you can return it if it's not for you.

This is a high-quality, extremely well made and designed all-around jacket but I'm still considering returning it. Why? Because I fell in love with a previous version of this one that a friend has, and that earlier version was made out of Gore-Tex and had an amazing luxe sheen without sacrificing functionality. You can take it from the slopes to the fishing boat to the theatre. (We're Alaska girls, these things sometimes happen all on the same day.) This fabric is decidedly more "flat" and is more in line with expected rougher Carhartt fabrics. This design is great, though, and the construction is impeccable. I ordered a large and it says size 14-16 and I think this is accurate. It is roomy enough for layers without being too bulky. The storm cuffs, numerous roomy pockets, detachable hood, long "tail" to cover butt, and a complete lack of velcro (i HATE velcro) make this a winner. It does NOT have any vents, so it won't breathe well if you're planning to be extremely athletic in it, but it does have a great liner and it's a perfect weight—not too heavy, not too light. DIY insulating layers for warmth, which is how I prefer it.I just miss the sheen of the Gore-Tex and though I'm sure this fabric performs great, it just doesn't have the same luxe-feel. The exposed snaps at the top and bottom are also covered in some kind of plastic polymer stuff, which I'm sure is practical but again...not pretty.Overall very good value. I might still keep it.

I am an Electrician by trade and have owned many carharts before and this one holds up to the carhart name well. Few things you may want to know that I found.First it runs about one size big. Normally I'm a 2XL but this jacket is an XL tall. Still has room to layer as well. I have put the waterproofing to the test and it really does work. After a few hours out in the rain you start to feel wet no matter what, but I was impressed. It cuts the wind nicely also but it is not heavily insulated. I like this because i can wear it through the change of seasons and layer under neath if it gets real cold. Like other carharts they design the jacket well so you can work with your hands above your head without the jacket riding up on you. Also well designed is the Hood, its HUGE. I can wear my hardhat underneath it, like having an umbrella over your head. The upper left lapel pocket right over your heart is awesome for your cellphone and pen, easy access and it zips up, its on the outside of the jacket not the inner pocket (there is an inner pocket also). The sleeves have nice inner seal to them made from "stretchy" material, keeps out moisture and snow. I think that pretty much covers it, I do want to say I get alot of compliments on it, looks alot like an expensive North Face jacket.

I absolutely LOVE this coat. I got it in black after reading the reviews that the green one had a pink lining. I ordered this for my spring trip to Ireland and it was awesome. I really like the cuffs with the thumb holes, but they don't get in the way if you don't want to wear them. This coat isn't very warm, but it is pretty wind resistant, so that helps a lot with the chill. The hood is spacious enough to have my hair in a pony tail and still extend past my face a little bit to keep my glasses dry. There are two pockets on the outside of the coat - one has a flap on the front, the other is behind that one with a side opening. The outer pocket with the flap doesn't seem to be very waterproof.I had my phone in that pocket and it got wet, but I just switched it to an inner pocket and it stayed nice and dry. I'm on the shorter side at 5'2" but have a long torso, and this covered my bum almost completely. It was comfortable and easy to move in for horseback riding, hiking and kayaking, even with a sweatshirt under it. I might've fit in the size small, but I wanted to be able to layer underneath it so I wouldn't have to pack 2 coats. It's a little more expensive than I had originally wanted to spend, but it was well worth it.

I've been searching for a true rain jacket that didn't allow water to soak through in an actual downpour but didn't look as though I was headed for work on a crab boat. I prefer my clothes to fit right and not be tight or baggy. I also wanted a jacket that looked nice for every occasion, be it church, date night or working in the barn. This jacket fits the bill. I'm 6'0" 180 lbs. and the medium fits with enough room for a sweatshirt layer in cold weather but won't be too baggy over just a t-shirt. I purchased the olive green color and love it. The hood is removable if you want and is the proper shape to completely cover your head but not be down over your eyes.I have had it in various rain storms and have no signs of water seeping through. The material is tough and will not rip or pick easily. I'm very picky about jacket sleeve cuffs but I couldn't be happier with these. I love the slanted outer detail as well as the internal elastic around the wrists. This is the uninsulated version but I plan on using this as an outer shell and layering this fall/winter. I've had several comments on how nice of a jacket it was. This is a quality jacket I would recommend to everyone.

The Carhartt J162 jacket is just what I needed. As a truck diver I am subjected to various weather conditions all year long. This jacket is the only rain coat I have owned that allows me to stay perfectly dry, is an excellent wind breaker, and with clothing layers (a down vest and heavy shirts) to stay warm under harsh weather conditions. The two inside pockets allow plenty of room and protection for cell phones, documents or whatever you need to have on you while working. This can also be said for the outside chest pocket; when you don't want to have to unsnap the coat to get to an inside pocket. The high storm collar and storm flaps will save you under harsh conditions.I am particularly impressedwith the double layer elbows which have been the Achilles heel of many past jackets. This coat does run large in its sizing and while I normally wear an extra large I purchased this coat in a large size and have not been disappointed. The coat has still allowed me plenty of room for movement even when additional heavy cloths are being worn beneath it.This coat is nothing short of an excellent value and should offer many good years of service.

I *love* this coat. This is my second Carhartt jacket (the other is a quilted duck jacket, for colder weather) and it's good Carhartt quality. I'm 5'3, 130 lbs, and a size 34B bra, and the small fits perfectly - not tight so I'm able to layer, but not so loose I look frumpy. I live in the Pacific Northwest where it rains daily for most of the year and it's kept me perfectly dry. I will say though that I haven't used it in downpour weather yet so I'm not sure how it holds up in that, but in moderate rainfall it's been good. I LOVE that it has a longer "tail" in the back so it covers your butt a bit. My quilted duck jacket on the other hand is a typical jacket fit, so it doesn't cover my butt, and that's the only real reason I don't like wearing it as much. This one covers my butt (though it does ride up if I'm wearing a backpack) which is great. A huge plus for me is that there are a million pockets - some outside, some inside. I prefer my hoods to be a bit bigger to keep all the rain off my face, but I still like this hood better than the hood on my North Face rain jacket, which barely covers my head (and has no pockets).

This is my dream rain jacket! I have literally spent hours searching for this jacket and it arrived today and it is absolutely perfect. First, I wanted a jacket that is rainproof--check. Next I wanted a heavy duty zipper that zips up from the bottom as well--check. Next I wanted a good hood system that I could adjust to windy conditions by tightening or loosening the cords--check. I wanted a jacket that covered my butt--check. I wanted a jacket with various pockets--check. I wanted a jacket I could wear in multiple situations from outdoor hikes to a movie--check. I wanted a jacket with snaps on the zipper fly, not velcro (which grabs onto gloves and scarves and gets messed up over time)--check.I wanted a jacket that was roomy enough for layers--check. (I got the 2X and it is plenty large, almost too large for a usual size 18 to 20) I wanted a jacket that would work for three seasons (I live in a rainy, windy and moderately cold climate but not major freezing or snow)--check. Its a nice color, not too bright but not completely dull. I love the thumb cuff, as well. Really, I'm so excited, the search is finally over!

I was cautiously hopeful about this rain jacket and it did not disappoint. The price hurt a bit, but I can honestly say it's worth every penny, as one would expect from a Carhartt. It fits true to size. I was worried, as some reviews said it was tight around the hips and butt, but I don't find it to be at all. I'm 5'8", a size 12 and I'd say I'm fairly bottom heavy. I can easily zip the jacket and it's loose around my hips. It does cover my butt which I wondered about as I'm somewhat tall. A couple reviews also said the jacket is not cute, but gets the job done. I disagree!! I think it's SO cute, and I've gotten so many compliments. I do love a yellow rain coat, it's a classic! I will say, that the stock puc is not an accurate color example. The Yellowstone color looks a bit brown in the photos...sort of a Dijon mustard color...it's much more yellow IRL. I love it though. The vents are great, as well as the wrist cuffs with thumb holes. The hood is ample and can cover my head and snap even with my over ear headphones on. I'm completely pleased with this jacket and highly recommend!

Love everything so far, have had it about a week. The quality is amazing of course because it’s Carhartt. If I could change one thing it would be the pockets, one of the interior pockets is just a netting and the other closes with Velcro. I would prefer zippers. The two very standard exterior pockets are just a hair to small to fit my 7+ which is a very standard phone size these days. It fits well in the netting pocket inside the coat and while the jacket is zipped, there’s no chance of it falling out. but as a pocket critic I must say-they are still good. The main zipper is amazing! A lot of rain coats have a weak point at the zipper, but the multiple folds of fabric help to make sure the water stays out!The hood is the perfect size-big but not too big. Also when coats are long, sometimes I worry about how it will zip and fit around my butt. I’m not kardashian sized but big enough that it’s a problem with pants and long coats. This coat is no problem! Fits perfectly.Once again, love it.

This jacket is great. It has sleeves that are actually long enough, the extra length in the rear helps keep your bum dry when you lean or sit on stuff outside, and the hood is shaped in a way that stays up even when I have my hair up in a messy bun or pony tail.I found it to be warm (it’s not a winter coat, but awesome all the way down to 35°F). When I layered one of my heavier sweater fleeces under it it was good for a little winter weather too.I wore this on assignment (photographer) our on a lobster boat and I was warm and dry at the end of the day. The snap pockets are nice, and the durability is great. I didn’t cringe when I scraped up against stuff or worry I’d snag or rip my new coat. It’s a Carhartt jacket - and you can use it like one! It’s a welcome addition to my Carhartt collection. I’m an old Mainer, and between rugged winters and always working outside, I love their stuff. Real work stuff for real folks, not fancy yuppie work clothes.
