I received Call of Duty for PS2 for Christmas 2004. It's taken me a couple of months of sporadic play to complete it. I'm not particularly inept at games, but I found this one quite hard! The levels were vast, with the VERY occasional "checkpoint" mid-way through. If you die, you're taken back to the start, or to the checkpoint if applicable. Some levels took me over 30 minutes to complete, so you can imagine the frustration if you're taken back to the start! This game's strengths are it's graphics, it's atmosphere, and the sense of actually being there. It surpasses Frontline in this respect to me. The places are beautifully rendered, and the weather and sound are great. The enemies are intelligent, and you do have to play sensibly to progress with reasonable health. By sensibly I mean allow your colleagues to get THEIR arses shot to ribbons whilst you hide in an alley way, then lob a few grenades out. You also have to be sensible with your ammo. You can only carry 2 weapons, which actually means you need to think strategically about which ones to carry, and to be conservative with your shooting. The graphics too are fantastic, and as another reviewer has commented, the number of soldiers on screen at any one time is impressive. Wasn't so impressed with the tank missions though. They went on a bit long and I was dying (not literally) to get back out on foot and "make mayhem" with the boys!Although it took me 2 months to complete, had I played every night solidly I suspect I would have finished in a week. It was a bit on the short side in hindsight, but it's the sort of game I'll want to play again in the future, and it'll all seem new again. Highly recommended, intelligent first-person shooter.

I'll answer your first question; is Call of Duty better than Medal of Honour? Well, Call of Duty is in a League of it's own. The amount of people onscreen at any one moment is breathtaking, and seeing them getting torn to pieces by them 'Bloody Germans', actually made me physically soil my pants on more than one ocasion!! For the first time on PS2, you can experience WW2 as a Russian and even a British Gentleman (At bloody last), as well as the usual American(Awww, damn it!!).This is a breath of fresh air in a tiring market, where every game seems to show America as the only country who fought for justice in WW2. Delightfully, each different viewpoint greatly changes how you have to play this game, with British Desert Rats relying on stealth when ambushing a village, while being a Russian sniper, you must rely on your senses to destroy the oncoming onslaught of Germans. On the downside, this game does eventually become repetitive, and despite the deafening sounds, some of the guns are quite frankly rubbish. The real reason that I gave this 5 stars, is because of the BRILLIANT online play. I understand that many readers may not have connected their PS2 to the internet, and are sceptics of it working well, but buying broadband is worth it alone for this game. For instance, the first time I had a sniper battle, in the shattered ruins of Stalingrad, an ominous silence hang over the air for the 10 minutes when both of us were searching for the other. And as I finally got his head lined up with my crosshairs, after 12 minutes of searching, his muzzle flashed and I keeled over, with a cunk of lead in my brain. Sure; it's easy to get angry, but why get angry when you can get even? HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

The first Call of Duty title to appear on the PS2 and it's easy to see why this franchise has easily taken over as the leading name in World War 2 gaming. Having only ever played Medal of Honors, this was the first time I have played Call of Duty in the five years it has been out....and what a game! I only wish I had started these games earler. The gameplay is very similar to Medal of Honor, with just that little bit more umph. This game is so exciting and explosive throughout, and will certainly get the adrenaline flowing! The action never stops, making it quite difficult most of the time, yet very challenging. The levels are nice and long, with checkpoints few and far between. You will probably have to play each level more than a dozen times before getting it right, putting your strategic skills to the test. The good thing is, this will take more than a week or two to complete, giving you great value for money. The graphics and environments are very impressive. So much attention has gone into detail. The musical score is also very good, giving great atmosphere and making the game even more exciting. The only bug bears are that it can be quite tricky driving a tank, and your fellow soldiers periodically get in your way from time to time which is very annoying - at one point I was stuck on the stairs for some time because the soldier in front of me wouldn't budge! However, maybe these were improved upon for the next game, which I shall find out when I play Call of Duty 2. I'm hoping it will be as great, however, I'm pleased to see that most of the Call of Duty games look to be as fine as this one.

The much anticipated FPS platform topper Finest Hour hit the shelfs with hast. The game has a quality rather than quantity basis where the missions are short and low in amount but the quality of the atmosphere isn't beaten on any precious FPS. There are 8 Russian missions that you start with, then a disappointing 4 British missions and then finally the American missions. You get thrown into the battle from the first minute and have to survive with little ammo and a rather lame gun, however this is the least of your worrys. The dark atmosphere makes it incredibly difficult to see where your going and this could cost your life in the dangerous and action filled surroundings. The same problem of dark buildings, night time attacks and underground ventures is ever-present throughout the game and skill as well as patience is needed to complete each of them. The overall mission plot is superbly worked and beautiful crafted environments can prove a distraction, even from a line of ammo flaring Nazis.Dont be mistaken though, this is great FPS and the variety of characters, weapons and moves make the game well worth the retail price...advised for any medal of honor nut or for anyon wanting a game whee they can take on arole in the firing line of WWII.

World war 2 games are a favourite of mine and I bought this on day of release and instantly was impressed with the graphics, you start off in Stalingrad and I was amazed at the amount of action happening on screen. As a Russian soldier you and your fellow soldiers progress through 8 not too difficult levels (I played on medium setting) sometimes on foot othertimes in a tank. Then you move into Africa playing a Brit and there is an increase in difficulty here, but unfortunately only 4 Africa levels! whats going on did we not play as large a role in the war as the USA and Russia. Saying that I did get stuck on the last level in Africa so it did take a while. Then you move onto the western front, seven levels, some of which you have to escort a vehicle safely through the level, which can be frustrating, other levels you drive a tank which I really enjoyed. And thats it, 19 levels which is why it only gets 4 stars, the game is too short, and with no medals to win or stats at all there is no point going back over the levels, which is annoying. So to summarise I can recommend this game there are some fantastic levels to play, with loads going on around you, but do not expect to be playing it for too long. Enjoy it while it lasts!

an ablsoloutly brilliant game with crisp graphics, wepons etc. however one small point i must make. before you read this id just like to say i like america and there people and have NOTHING against them.I got this only this week, and iam on the last set of missions for the americans. The game is split up into 3 sections, 1st is the russians, the second is the english, and third is americans. at last, game designers have got it right. it wasnt just the americans who los there lives, it was us along with the russians as well of lots of other countries. bt i was reely mad that they only gave us 4, thats right 4, missions where as the russians got several. i aint finished the game yet,bt i bet the americans have got scores of missions cos they thought they were the only 1s fighting. as they say. i think game designers have to show some respect when designing games as ppl lost there lives for our liberty. just a small point that was bugging me. great game.

I have played the various Medal of Honour versions on the PS2 and Call of Duty is a bit (but not much) better. The levels are a bit harder and the fact that you can work in a team does add another dimension, although it can be annoying when one of your comrades decides to walk straight in front of you when you're just about to unleash hell. What is also better is that you can only carry two weapons at a time which makes the game a bit more tactical, and you are rarely able to take out the enemy with one shot so when you do complete a level you feel like you earned it. For some reason though you do get more levels as a Russian and an American than you do as a British soldier - not sure why this is.Overall this game is recommended for its type but you wonder what new elements the games designers are going to be able to bring in in future releases as essentially this is very similar to MOH.

This is my favourite game of all time. This first Call of Duty was the best that was ever made. The Eastern, African and Western conflicts were very well done and the missions were vast and challenging. Yes, checkpoints are few and far between, but I honestly think that added to the challenge of it. The Russian campaign was a particular favourite of mine, and the sniper and tank elements in Stalingrad put some of Call of Duty's modern titles to shame. This game will give you hours and hours of gameplay. The modern Call of Duty titles are far too film like and the developers should really look back to this title and Call of Duty 2: Big Red One. They in my opinion were the best of the series, and I love this game to bits. You won't regret buying it.

Call of duty is superb! It is much better than MOH:Frontline and MOH:Rising Sun. The graphics are superb and the realism is excellent. There are two problems though! No blood to add to the realism of war like in Shellshock Nam'67 and there is constant music in the background on most levels which hampers the superb sound effects in the game. You can't turn the music off either! But overall it's a must buy with the theatres of Starlingrad which is awsome, North Africa which is probably too short with only 4 levels then to Aachen and the road to Bastogne with the black tank batalion which is infact quite enjoyable. So overall 9-10! Hope they make another one!

Having recently bought and played through all the Call of Duty games for PS2, I would say this is the worst, compared to the other two. It may have set a new standard for WWII gaming, but it just isn't up to it now that much better FPS are out.To be honest, I find the gameplay a bit annoying. The campaign is quite good and a decent length. However, as with the previous reviewer, there are annoying things like trying to work out how to drive the tank and crashing into walls for five minutes. You must remember though, that this is simply compared to two other later and better engineered games. Call of Duty is still a good game.

When I first got this game it was easy to adjust to the controls which are simular to Medal of Honour. The graphics also are simular but show slightly more potential. You first start of in stalingrad and work your way through the game to Africa with the british commandos and in western europe with the americans. You first start off with only ammunition as the red army is ill equipped and you must wait until somebody dies to retrieve a weapon. Then you can advance with your commrades to the killing of masses of germans. The gameplay last's and is fairly addictive but is simular in ways to Medal Of Honor.

as a big fan of the medal of honor series i was expecting the game to be average, this game is not average it is fantastic,i didnt think m.o.h could be beat(at time of writing this i have not played european assault)the graphics are really good, gameplay is fast and furious and their is 100% no slowdown, playing in three diffrent theaters of war, russia, north afrika and france, weapons are great and look out for a couple of KING tiger tanks,i really recommend this game to any war shoot em up fan, this game does not dissapoint, get it today!

4.12.2004

I bought this game on the day of release (3/12/04)as I had heard so much about the PC version. Played it when I got home and couldn't switch it off.The graphics, sound and gameplay are very realistic. You start off with the battle of Starlingrad as a Russian soldier. Morters and artillery rain down on you, snipers and machine gun nests try to wipe out your very existance. This game is one of the best I have ever played, even better than the Medal of Honor series (and that's saying something!)Buy it now and turn the tide of WW2

4.6.2005

This game is amazing. I have played on medal of honour many times but this beats it by a mile. It is so much more realistic and a pleasure to play. They,ve added in little details to make it better, for instance when you look though the sights, it's how you would look though tem in real life. The last level is a bit dissapointing as I personally think its quite easy as I completed it first go. But this top all the other shooting games I've got or played on. Buy this and you won't be dissapointed.

2.3.2005

OK the annoying thing is how far back you end up going sometimes when your killed, but then this does add to the gameplay in certain ways, as your compelled to get through. If only they let you save it when you want.Nonetheless a fantastic game whith so many in-game scenarios, from the russian winter to the african sun and the final bridge! intermixing levels from driving tanks and to being a gunner on a jeep to house/bunker/bridge/tower clearing.
