for anyone considering give the power file a gothis tool allowed me to do a job I probably will be able to finish.Unlike reviews relating to fine work on wood and using like sandpaperI give heavy duty cutting 2mm steel for grinding and really give it some wellyif you're doing up a car, and say rust turned up in the mot all around the rear suspension. so out with the welder and tools... welding is the easy bit.. then I drop the tank to weld petrol filler area and start hacking away at the rust with power toolsa few times during this job I wasn't sure what was holding it together but a slow and steady approach with axel stands and old tyres under the body. it heldBefore,I was using angle grinder and hand files and to lesser extent nibblerThese work and hand files while satisfying . the grinder is so loud needs ear protection (tell that to the guys grinding metal I saw in college)On the other hand the powerfile is not needed and if neighbours are a concern is better... the only sounds that bother me in summer is hearing some angle grinder in the street! (or in parliament)Anyway, the sparks produced are somewhat less as well. it gets into way more areas than the grinder makes for more precision job rare you reach for hand file. Grinder is always going to rule for cutting when you actually need to cut cleanly, but 1 inch wide, short 'cuts' in 1mm and general hacking is easily done. 2mm chassis it will grind and cut just about and cleans up welds that need flattening downthose blue zirconian bands are way better at ripping through metalwhy i'm now ordering another one is finding the end roller gives out before anything else, it may be in the instructions to grease this i don't know but this actually is a bearing with rollers exposed to a lot of heat. I will be greasing before each session from now onthey still a few years though before giving out,one handed operation is a lot safer than a grinder meaning you can simply hold a piece of metal and grind some without pliers just holding it

The first thing you must realise about this tool is that it is a POWER file, power being the operative word. it is supplied with some very coarse belts and if you use it on wood, boy does it file it!!! I renovate antique furniture and old musket guns. I wanted this file to use it to remove the top layer of old varnish and oil based finishes and rust from metal parts. I had the good sense to buy some 120 grit belts with it. these were the finest grit I could get on amazon, and I tested it first on some old bits of wood. good job I did cos it made a gouge in the wood in a split second. I cant emphasise too much you should NOT PRESS ON. I quickly learnt a technique that you should use the file as if you were tickling the wood with a feather, touch it very lightly, DO NOT PRESS ON. Let the belt do the work. If you touch the material very lightly it will work fantastically and the belt will last for ages. Even for metal you do not need much more pressure to remove rust. I used it to remove rust from old gun barrels and it worked great. It takes a bit of practise but well worth it. This will become a well used bit of kit in my workshop - wish I'd bought one ages ago. Oh by the way, did I say DON'T PRESS ON!

Bought this to speed up the removal of heavily weathered varnish and cut back two hardwood garden recliners and table back to bare wood ready for re-finishing. It's amazingly quick to remove what was taking ages with an orbital sander and manual sanding block from the flat areas. My problem was that removing the finish from the slats and particularly between the slats was going to take ages by hand, hence my purchase. Wow! The reviewers who claimed it is a little too visious are right if you don't use a fine belt and a light hand. My first couple of attempts with the coarse belt and a higher speed did result in a few millimeters more wood being taken off than I had realised but then it is a file, not a sander! Once you work out how to use it it is a great time saver. I stripped the first chair in a couple of hours, it was looking like taking me a few days without this.

I am so glad that I wasn't put off buying this tool,I think you have to be realistic what you are using the tool for as with all power tools you have to let the tool do the work,I wouldn't reccommend this tool if you were stripping the face off of a barn door but it easily got the wood treatment off of my window framesI found it easy and versatile to use, the only quibble I found was it became a little bit heavy after prolonged use, and think it would have benifitted from an adapter to allow a vaccuum to be fitted,I didn't find any problem at all with the (foam ?) pad. What I would suggest is don't buy any course belts unless you are sure you need them, the medium ones are very effective, also be realistic in belt life, if it's worn out use a new one.( NO I DON'T WORK FOR B&D )But happy sanding.Hud.

If your are keen DIYer or professional and have not used this tool before it might you would consider one of these as perhaps the last things on your 'must have' list. You would be wrong. Its impossible to say how many uses this has. You have to use in a variety of situations to appreciate the versatility. All I would say is try to imagine your index finger was longer and the tip could magically at will make wood, plastic, metal disappear. Example last time I used: deep recess chisel out for mortice lock - but it transpired the tip of a screw intruding right at bottom of recess but preventing the insertion of the lock to proper depth. Magic steel removing tip of finger? - job done 5 seconds.Brilliant device

This has to be one of the most useful tools I have ever purchased. Im a tradesman and a loyal fan of Metabo Battery tools. However I bought this for a one of job.I have used this for so many different jobs! 1st thing to do is buy your self a pack of different grade belts.I have restored razor sharp edges to my knifes etc & lawnmower blades.Linished countless joints for welding jobs.Used it to clean up an impossible area under one of our older cars for welding.Cleaned the gates for painting.etc etc etc Its lasted well & took some abuse. This tool is a genuine bargain and worth every single penny.

This is one of those tools that, once you own it you wonder how you ever managed without it. Its incredibly handy, it will sharpen knives and garden tools, clean metal, you can sand and shape wood and fibreglass with it. I fit new handles to old tools and with this I can make one from just about any lump of spare wood.Non-proprietary belts are easily available online and are cheaper than buying B&D's own brand.I have had mine for about a year now (I didnt get it from Amazon) and I reckon I use it at least every week. If you are at all "handy" you will not regret owning one of these!

I bought one of these files when they first came out and have used it constantly for a good few years. After years of very hard use it failed, but considering the hard use it had I felt it was still very good value. So I had no hesitation in buying a second one. You can buy various grades of belts from 40 grit very coarse for heavy use, to 120 grit grit for more of a finishing use. The power will surprise you the first time you use it, so if you have the coarse grade belt on be very gentle on your first go. It will surprise you how many uses you find for it once you buy one.

This is a good tool and it is very useful and versatile for all sorts of DIY jobs and projects. However, the 3 Black & Decker sanding belts that come with it are total rubbish. All have snapped at the join, 2 of which went only after a few minutes use. I have bought other belts cheaply on the internet, which are the stronger, butted joint type in a variety of grits, and these have been fine. I would avoid B&D's own branded ones, if they are anything like the belts that came with the tool. I only hope that the durability of this power file proves to be a lot better.

I haven't used this actual file but have a couple from days gone by, one even Made in England. If this latest one (Made in China) is still going strong after about 15 years then fantastic. Time will tell. The design of this file is great and has got me out of many scrapes. It's a very useful versatile piece of kit. Not something that you'd use everyday, but when you need it it does the business. Different thickness belts and formers used to be available as were a stand which made the tool even more useful but haven't seen these around for a while. For £30 buy it.

Purchased to replace a much loved and useful identical sander which lasted one month beyond its guarantee.Used intermittently throughout this period but when I had a sanding project, loved being able to use this.New one didn't have a uk 3 pin plug on it. It has a 2pin plug.I didn't see it mentioned in product description. On examining my old sander, discovered that the "plug" opens up and I was able to reuse it on the new sander- the 2 pin plug fits inside the 3 pin carcass....Apart from that, very happy! Can be a bit of a brute until you get used to it

An excellant and very useful tool. These have been around for over 30 years or more, and this is my first one. It has many uses around the shed and works a treat with rapid material removal.Good for metal but works fine on wood too, just be careful as, like full size belt sanders, it removes material very quickly! Its noisy too, but what mains tool isnt?Belts are small in width and will wear rapidly, but are cheap to replace. Keep some spare, or else, you'll not finish the job! The dust extractor does work as well. Recommended.

This is a great tool. I was sceptical at first and it really hurt to pay the money out but with such a big DIY job on my landing, hallway and stairs I had to try something. This little baby gets into all the smallest areas and is surprisingly powerful (do not use at maximum - it will take 5m off with one touch - best to use at about 3/4). I do recommend you get plenty of extra belts as it is such a robust and usable little tool it does go through them quickly. One of my pride and joys now!

Arrived very quickly. I was a bit puzzled however by the illustration which is a mirror imageto the actual tool. The illustration on the box shows the same anomaly. The instructions weren't too clear and fixing the dust filter was a bit of a puzzleand took a bit of forcing on. Having said that it is a great tool. an improvement on my old onewhich keeps throwing off the belt. No shame to it being several years old and has done a lot of work.Recommend this one.

This unit is well built, light, powerful and does its job well, bought this unit to sand down aluminium motorbike gearbox housing after it had been welded around chain drive area where it has a curve shape to it and it did it perfectly and re blended it in well and now can't see the repair. Very handy for tight spaces, general projects and restoration work of all types, it beats do it by hand and saves a lot of time and that to me makes it well worth the money.
