I must firstly admit that I'm a bit of a Makita fan having bought quite a few of their tools. This palm sander was purchased to replace a very tired old "cheap no name" machine of the same size that has come to the end of its useful working life. When first unpacked I was delighted at the solid feel of the Makita and was soon cutting lengths of sandpaper to try it out. This version of the Makita palm sander uses the flip over spring system of fastening paper which, although a bit fiddly, holds the paper securely. You also get a simple plastic tool that punches the paper so that the inbuilt dust extraction system works. This punch is extremely easy to use.The dust bag fits easily and quickly and is not obtrusive when the machine is in use.Palm sanders of this size are extremely useful for many jobs and invaluable, for example, when sanding stairs where a larger random orbital sander has been used which cannot get into the corners. The high speed of the Makita gets the job done quickly, leaves a good finish, and is comfortable to handle. The power cord is a bit on the short side which means that you have to trail an extension lead around - but this is common with many tools of this type.I have not awarded the machine five stars for two reasons.Firstly: If, like me, you suffer from arthritic fingers the spring paper retaining system [whilst very effective] is a bit awkward to use. To solve this I have since bought a replacement pad for the sander [as fitted to the Makita BO4555] that uses Velcro to hold the paper in place - slightly more expensive in terms of sandpaper but easier to use.Secondly: Palm sanders are all notorious for their ability to create dust, even when their dust extraction systems are fitted, and the Makita is no exception. Whilst the paper punch is simple to use it only makes very small holes in the paper which does not allow the bag to catch as much dust as it could. On many sanders you have an option to connect them to a workshop [or home] vacuum cleaner which is far more effective but, for some reason, the Makita does not have this facility as standard. This is an unfortunate oversight and, in my eyes, has helped it to loose one star.Would I buy one of these sanders again? Yes, definitely! The quality of build is excellent, it is extremely efficient in use, and very easy to hold and control, and it will probably outlast me. As a DIY tool it's great and well worth the premium price over lesser "budget" machines.

I bought this to replace my old Black and Decker 1/4 sheet sander that had finally packed up.On opening the box I was immediately impressed that this machine is fitted with a proper heavy duty rubber type power lead (not the usual thin plastic coated stuff that cracks up after a while). I'm over 6ft tall and there is enough power cord length for me to reach up as high as I can (and probably up a small step or two as well) while the plug stays comfortably in the extension lead on the floor.I usually use my orbital sanders outside without their dust bags, but I tried this one (just to see) - and I can advise it collected the majority of the dust (more than I've experienced with my other tools,so I'm thinking it's actually worth carrying on using the bag in future too).It is much quieter in use and has less vibration than my previous sander, which is a bonus too.Altogether, I'm glad I didn't try to save a tenner (or whatever) on a cheaper brand, as I'm sure it wouldn't have been as happy.I'm also glad to see I can buy replacement face plates etc, which bodes well for long term use and ownership.I bought this particular model, as I like to reuse my old linisher (belt sander) belts (cut down as rectangles to fit of course), so the sheet clamps are an essential feature for me. It hasn't got the "hook and eye" type sheet fixings though, if that's what you want. There are however a few sheets of sandpaper in the box, so you can start using the machine straight away if you haven't already got your own supplies.

I love this sander so why only 4 stars...here's why..Pro's: very powerful....cheap for the quality and power it provides (yes there are cheaper ones out there but not at this quality for under £50)Con's: very short cord....come on Makita...a decent length cord would be great. The hole piercer for the sanding pads could the better...the hole size it produces is pitiful and impacts on the dust collection ability. You need to add some pre pierced sanding sheets to your purchase for the best results. The size of the dust exhaust is tiny which means that you must use the dust bag as you can't find an adaptor for a vacuum. No case (Ok I shouldn't expect a case for under £50 but one would have beennice.)This is a great sander but it could have been so much better...this is why quality brands like Makita lose out to cheaper knock offs. However I still prefer brands like this knowing that I'll still be using their tools in 10 or 15 years and not having replaced then 3 or 4 times.

What a super piece of kit.Purchased to replace a 'rubbish' Draper sander~ the spring clips gave up holding the sandpaper after about a week of heavy use. This sander just feels right and works brilliantly. The dust collection bag really does keep dust levels down. Noise level is very low for an orbital sander and the vibration is minimal through the hand and wrist making extended use quite acceptable. Very easy to control on small work areas~ it does'nt skim away from you unexpectedly spoiling a fine finish and single handed work around tight access areas is easy. The inclusion of a jig to perforate sanding sheets is great as it allows you to cut your own from sandpaper rolls which works out much cheaper than purpose cut packs. The sandpaper spring clip holders are somewhat 'fiddly' but seem robust~ hope they retain tension for longer than my Draper.

With skirting boards, door frames and doors that needed rescuing from years in a smoker’s house, I was looking for help. Many roads led me to this compact Marita sander. It is very effective, easy to load with economical rolls of sandpaper and handy in the hand. That’s the good news. The bad news is that I had to stop using it in the apartment where I really needed it. I note that some reviews describe this sander as quiet. It isn’t. Normally not a problem when sanding at home, but in the apartment where I had so much to do I was visited by three separate neighbours asking me when I would stop. The noise was disturbing the apartment above and the one above that. I had to switch to using paint stripper, one long winded and messy job.A great sander but only if you can tolerate a lot of noise.

Bought this item to help with sanding walls that were poorly plastered and repaired, as well as doors prior to painting. Very effective sander. It generates a lot of dust and the dust collector is barely able to keep up. The electric cord is not quite long enough to reach the top of a door (or anything over 6ft high), so this may be an argument in favour of a cordless sander. You need to wear a mask and eye protection. Ear defenders would come in handy too! If you are new to using electric sanders, check out the videos on YouTube to see how to use them, and maybe also know which ones to use for the types of sanding you plan to do.

Best palm sander.I have the one before this possibly anyway this is a hand sander that one can safely use up High ladders, awkward one hand situations once accustomed to its movement & the finish is excellent.I’m the sander the one that does more it seems within my crew.We All have worked in 5*, the wealthy dwellings & domestic. This has lasted over 4 years, I’ve cut & extended the cord so No need for extension lead, added gaffer tape when the foam wears on square base.Invest in an Mdf style dust mask as this can really fine finish.I will only buy this.

I have a BO4555 which had a bearing and base plate failure, and bought this BO4556 to replace it before I found where I can order replacement Makita parts to repair the original. Just for anyone wondering I can confirm the only difference between a 4555 and 4556 is the base plate which on the 4555 is hook and loop, the 4556 is just a sponge foam base. The data plate shows exactly the same rpm and wattage etc. Both of my sanders have seen extensive use and apart from the bearing failure have been great.

So Mother wanted her 30year old solid pine kitchen table sanding down. She'd painted the legs of it at some point and the top was a bit bashed with the original coating of oil or varnish or both? I started off with a 100 grit paper but soon realised I better use the harsher stuff and got the lowest 60 grit. I found the sandpaper easy to replace and the machine great. The table what mainly square in shape and it did the job great. I'm looking forward to sorting out a few window sills with it

Purchased this item to sand down some internal doors prior to re-painting. It worked really well, was quiet and very lightweight so was no problem to sand down the 5 internal doors I needed to do. So much easier than just using sandpaper and a block and gave a much cleaner finish. The dust bag was better than I thought it would be, leaving me only a small amount to clear up afterwards. Very pleased with this.

This is my first ever electric sander.. so easy to use.. I was concerned about putting the sandpaper in the clips but that was super easy and a joy to do because it really is simple.. I’m not sure what the punch plate is for but I know it comes with one.. this sander feels like quality.. it is heavy enough to feel solid but not too heavy to use for a long period of time.. I’m really impressed..

Good well balanced palm sander, have used it for several hours so far without any problems. My only complaint is the length of the cable is too short and considering its low power rating the large diameter power cable looks as though it would power a 3 kilowatt oven. The cable, as short as it is, tends to be a little problematic due to its size. Other than this it is good value for the money.

Wow, what a great sander, nothing flimsy about this, very solid with a nice long quality lead. Too bulky for fiddly tasks but perfect for sanding larger items. The plastic cutter that punches holes into any sandpaper is great. Saves you having to buy expensive sheets if you want to use the dust extraction. The extraction works very well. I highly recommend this sander.

This is just powerful enough to deal with furniture, doors, stairs and other small surfaces. It might take a bit longer than a more powerful orbital sander on Medium sized surfaces, but it's very good for it's size. Easy to load with sand paper - the clips are not difficult. Easy to hold. Really good for the price. I don't think I would've needed to spend more.

I use "only" Makita tools, this is yet another brilliant tool from Makita, just one thing before fitting the dust bag spray a little silicon around the fitting it will drop off and go on with ease, its a shame its not 18volts, and it was cheaper on Amazon than it was on ebay one last thing "thanks" Amazon for next day delivery, regards martin
