Bought this in December 2011 so it's been on trial for 3 and a half years. Bought it as I saw it being used in a Spanish restaurant by the waitress at the bar and thought 'wow' that looks simple enough for my wife to use, so quick and easy. Until it started playing up about a month or two ago I would have given it 5 stars. However....The weak part, in our openers case, is where the two gears teeth meet. As you pull the arm down and the screw enters the cork and starts to travel down into the cork you have to exert quite a downward force on the handle. Some of the corks must be tough or dry though because the pressure needed to push the spiral screw down into the cork has caused the gear teethto slip/jump a notch so the spiral screw does not travel as far down into the cork as it should and it is then impossible to pull the cork out (effectively the whole corkscrew is then knackered as it has jumped a gear). So you then have to unwind the whole corkscrew from the cork leaving a quarter pulled cork sticking out from the bottle and remove the cork using something else, if you don't want to go thirsty. Remedy. At first I used brute force and a screwdriver to ease the teeth apart and set the handle back to normal. This was very difficult but I could see no other way to re-set the tool. But the problem persisted and the gears failed again after a few more bottles and so the writing was on the wall...this opener had had it. I was very disappointed, it was expensive but nice, heavy, beautifully made, lovely finish but a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. I had expected this to last for many years, after all metal vs. cork ? its should have been no contest. But the interlinking of the gear-teeth have been this ones downfall. I wrote to the company via their on site 'contact us' link but so far have not had a reply. Don't expect one either. So it's back to the old bottle opener for now.(but........ see below)UPDATE. Since this review I have purchased Two new Brabantia corkscrews, one Classic and one Napoleon. They take up nowhere near the space of the Connoisseur which was big and bulky. My wife finds them much easier to use and like other reviewers I give them 5 stars.UPDATE on my UPDATE. Its now October 2014. 6 weeks ago I wrote to Kitchen Craft to inform them of my faulty opener, not expecting a reply. However, soon afterwards I received a freepost lable and a request to return it to them for examination in Ireland. Today 4th Oct, I received a parcel, here in Spain, and inside was a replacement opener. Also a very nice letter from Zoe Perry, Product Quality Department. I was most impressed as I had thought that this sort of service was going out of fashion, but this proves otherwise. Obviously I was extremely pleased to receive the replacement and letter which has prompted me to update my star rating of the opener. Perhaps my origional opener was a Monday morning or Friday afternoon one but I cannot fault the company's attention towards it's customers. I am therefore re-reviewing my origional 1 star and giving it 5 star based on customer satisfaction and care. The trouble now is which of my three openers do I use!

It did have a 2 star overall due to longevity/value ratio.Great potential. Great looking product. Brilliant while it lasted. Then it died.BUT THEN the customer service was just brilliant. They sent me a new one (on provision of photo evidence) and followed up brilliantly well.My original review went like this:I got the original one to replace a different one my dad had had a few years ago. He was back to using an old style opener. But by the time I was in Lockdown with them I realised he hadn't actually taken it out of it's box yet. So he only started using it in March 2020. He was delighted. Comfortable to use (he has arthritis). Used it most days (hooray for lockdown boozing).Within about 2 months the foil cutter had broken. In 7 months the worm had totally broken off. I'd say it was over use but come on! It should be more durable than 7 months! Not even a year. There is a replacement worm but the whole section has come away - as you can see from the broken silver piece it would need soldering. Such a shame as the item was brilliant to begin with. He was careful with use. Thing is, I would happily buy something like this again IF I could guarantee it was stronger this time round. My update is:-We have a new one. It is excellent. I hope it lasts but I am very reassured by the swift, polite and courteous nature of the customer service for barcraft and kitchen craft. Brilliant. No qualms about buying from them in future

My last bottle opener in this style couldn't survive the extra strain due to lockdown and gave up the ghost. I have dug out other bottle openers that I have in my flat but they just aren't as good as this style so I finally decided to purchase this as a replacement. While my previous bottle opener was good I am going to say that this one is slightly better though I may just be biased as this one weighs more and hence feels more solid! Once you have used this style of bottle openers all others are rubbish as it is very hard to get any cork in the bottle using this opener (no matter how inebriated one is!)and it is minimal physical effort. So glad I have put the others back in the shelf until this one goes to bottle opener heaven and I need the emergency ones out again.

There's a saying that goes: "Build a better mousetrap, and the world will beat a path to your door." Well guess what? Nowadays we're a lot more likely to encounter a corked bottle of pinot than a mouse, and as far as I'm concerned, it makes no sense that any other type of corkscrew still exists! This set comes with a foil cutter (not really needed) and a flashy box (also not really needed), and most importantly a nice and chunky lever-arm corkscrew that takes the cork out of the bottle smoothly every time. It even includes an extra screw should you ever need to change the one that it comes with. These make a great gift (I've given a few of them in my time) and will give many years of service,at least until we all switch to screw-top caps ;-)

This is by far the easiest corkscrew I have ever used. The simple leaver action requires so little effort to remove the cork that my other corkscrews have been put into retirement. Whilst this is quite expensive for a corkscrew it is well worth it. Not only does it do it's job well, which is the main reason why you should buy anything but it also looks goodThe stand for the corkscrew when not in use is a good idea as it keeps it tidy and the thread part is kept safe from damage. At times if I have been doing allot of paperwork it has doubled up as a paperweight. I tend to leave it out on the side table in the sitting room/dining room most of the time as it does serve as a bit of acuriosity.

Purchased one in 2013 and opened a lot of bottles since! Started getting a bit stiff a few weeks ago and last week the ratchet suddenly sheared off. I would happily have brought a replacement (after all it has been quite heavily used and 4 1/2 years for an inexpensive device isn't bad) but when I came to this page to look it up I noticed the "lifetime guarantee" . Contacted customer services Tuesday night , they responded early on Wednesday, said they wouldn't have expected this to happen and responded with a request for my address and a replacement arrived on Thursday. Impressive service and really good product at a fraction of the price of the most expensive models.

So. People normally moan when stuff breaks, but I reckon this thing has opened a good thousand bottles of wine or so (probably more if I'm honest with myself). A pin came out and it wasn't working well. I emailed Kitchencraft, told them about my ten year old corkscrew and did they do spare parts. The guy emailed back the next day to say they didn't, but asked for my address and sent me a new one, no quibbles.I think you can tell more about a company when something goes wrong by how they react and deal with it than when they get it right first time. It's a great product, and even if they hadn't replaced it for free - I'd have bought another of the same.

I used one of my friends some time ago, then purchased a copy of it from a supermarket chain, which subsequently broke. This one is the real deal. Sold sturdy and seen plenty of action. In fact my wife, although needs no encouragement, look forward to opening a bottle up with this beauty! There is a back to using it, but once mastered it really is a piece of engineering. Super easy to use and looks pretty cool to impress when you have friends over for a little tipple. Lasted the test of time as I actually purchased this in 2009. Very very good! And

Bought a new one of these to replace my dad's 10-year old model which snapped in half (through the plastic body) over Christmas. It's reassuringly weighty and I had no reservations whatsoever in buying this model again, despite the recent failure- I fully expect to get another 10 years' use from this one and at only £30 that's a bargain! As for how it works, it generally makes opening any bottle of wine an absolute doddle. The mechanism is smooth and precise and it comes in a nice presentation box with a few extras so makes a great present!

Similar product I bought in France some 9 years ago finally had its day, and everything i have seen so far, wether online or in the shops was just too flimsy and did not come up to the same standard. So i bought this product with some trepidation. Should not have worried. Excellent product, beautifully presented in the pack with appliances including foil cutter, spare screw, etc. Very very happy with it. It comes packed it gorgeous box that pulls out with a ribbon. Actually will be buying one as a gift next week. Love it.

This is a much strurdier (and therefore heavier) version of a similar model it replaced. The old one jumped a cog very early on though continued to work for some time after - it was a freebie with a new wine subscription so can't complain. This one has the feel that it will last a considerable time and is presented in an attractive package which includes a heavy base, a foil remover, wine stopper and a spare screw bit. You can buy similar items in supermarkets for about a fiver but can't see them lasting long. Cheers!

Old one broke after 6 years of use on one of the squeezer hands hinge covering plastic. The new design looks better on both piercing, but more importantly pulling the cork. It seems lighter than with old one (probably change in the center of pull weight). One thing I dislike in the new design is the cutter (2 edges connected together) which I ditched straight away in favour of the older model with 4 separate rollers (still fits in the same spot). The new stand is also better to put it down after use as well.

Excellent item, makes your life easier for opening wines. Bigger than i expected to be but does the job just as it should have.. Quick and Easy!! Great box also, luxurious!! :). Fits perfectly on the stand but it should be better if there was places for the stopper and the foil cutter on the stand...My mother is happier than ever because she can open the wine bottles at our restaurant in a matter of seconds and she now stop asking from me every time a customer orders for a bottle of wine!!! :P

I'm afraid I do not get around to writing reviews very often. However, having just used this Kitchen Craft / Bar Craft lever corkscrew again for the nth time I thought it deserved a positive comment. Before purchasing this particular brand, I had noticed a few cheaper 'lookalike' versions which had negative comments regarding build quality. I'm happy to confirm the build quality of the Bar Craft branded corkscrew is excellent and feels and looks the same after 15 months frequent use.

A great mechanism, that makes it very easy to remove bottles. I have given these several trials with 4 openers for diffferent people, but 2/4 have had issues. There are some issues therefore with the design, but I have contacted them and had two new sent out so I can't complain on that behalf. It is MUCH easier than opening manuallyOnly reason it is 4 not 5 is because unfortunately parts have broken, and whilst rectified under warranty it does seem there are some design issues
