I'm going to be upfront here. I was offered this to test so couldn't really turn it down and, while test it I did, it is certainly, I feel, not a product aimed at one with slightly pauper pockets such as I.It's essentially a really posh version of the wine bottle stoppers you can buy for a few quid in the shops. The idea is a thin, hollow needle pierces the cork and it pushed down into the wine itself. Then, using a gas pressure release system, the wine can be siphoned into a glass and then effectively resealed thus preserving it perfectly in the bottle. Now given that this is for people who buy wine that costs enough to want to savour a bottle over a course of days and that the device itself costs nearly £300 I feel this is aimed at a very specific,well-to-do niche market. Or discerning alcoholics. If you feel you have done well to make a bottle last to the end of the evening, this is, frankly, not for you. However, if you enjoy a single glass of a higher class vintage with your meal, this may prove just the ticket. The device arrives very smartly packaged. In the box you get the device itself, a pouch and two gas canisters. The instructions, as seems de rigueur these days, amount to a diagram. This is, however, quite sufficient as this is very easy to set up.Simply unscrew the long black tubular part, pop in a canister of gas and re-screw into place. Remove the rubber protector from the end of the needle. Place the needle against the centre of the cork and slowly push the plunger down so the needle passes through. Then you simply lift the bottle, thumb down the gas release and pour. Once you have poured enough, placing the bottle upright will stem the flow immediately. While the test bottle I bought wasn't exactly the "finest wine" I did keep it going 4 days and noticed non of the vinegar-like taste that usually develops with an unattended bottle. As I say, this is something of a product for the connoisseur. If that's you though, I can attest that this seems very well made, well presented and does the job it was intended for with no fuss. The only outlay would be having to replace the gas canisters now and then, but I don't think that will be an issue if you feel you need one of these in your life.

So, here we have a rather posh looking offering from Coravin, a device apparently born out of necessity from its creator who had a moment of clarity when he applied his medical knowledge to a humble cork. What it does, is pierce the cork with a very sharp surgical needle apparently normally used for piercing peoples spines, injects Argon, which is a noble gas (obviously!) which causes an increase in pressure that forces wine back up the needle to the pouring spout. On withdrawing the needle the cork self heals without any help, because that's pretty much what cork does. This leaves you with a wine bottle full of inert gas and a sealed cork and it will last, allegedly, up to a year.Seems obvious when you think about it!Well I'm sure the first question anyone has is "does this actually work??" and the answer is yes, yes it does. It works perfectly. The caveats are that you can only use it on bottles with corks, a trip to the supermarket revealed that not all wine is sold in bottles with standard corks these days.Pour speed was a little slow but nothing major. Piercing the cork is easier than you might imagine, the needle is sharp. The argon comes in those little cylinders, the same sort of thing (though not exactly) as you get Nitrous Oxide in for...whatever those are for, and CO2 ones for bike pumps. However they contain Argon. They are readily available on amazon or coravin's website and if bought in bulk it works out about 80p ish of argon by my ball park calculations for every time you "use" a glass of wine from a bottle, so although the system might seem expensive, if you work it out, even on cheap wine it's significantly more economical than having to drink the lot, and better for you too.So overall, it's a gadget; but a gadget with a real use case, the more you think about it the more sense, so long as your wine has a cork. And it works!

This is a niche product to say the least, and not one I would normally buy. I mostly drink wine that comes with screw top or plastic corks these days - which you either finish in a day or so - or throw away. So accepting that I am not the target market - I thought I would give it a go on one of my older cork stopped bottles that has been waiting for a special occasion. The overall conclusion is that it was easy to use and it works as it should do.There is a video of this being used on the Amazon page - so you can see it is simply a matter of pushing in the needle through the cork, and then extracting a glass of wine. It is replaced by argon gas - from the small cannister that is provided (plus a spare). These should cover about 15 glasses and cost about six quid each to replace. You have to make sure that you have cleared the needle of any oxygen before inserting, so there is a small amount of skill required. I think the idea is that the wine that is left in the bottle does not deteriorate at all over time. I have tried it over a week - but I presume it lasts a lot longer than that.So - a lovely product at a premium price that does what it should. You can supplement this with other types of needs. For instance a really fine one for aged corks seems like a good investment. I can see how in a commercial setting being able to offer more fine wine by the glass might be cost effective. In the domestic setting I could see how this would work really well for fine port - where a bottle lasts too long for a couple to get through.Although I like this - the price does seem too high to me. The idea behind this product is that if you have a bottle of corked wine that you might not drink all at once then you can pour the wine without air getting to the remaining amount. This is accomplished by inserting the needle through the cork, an inert gas is then forced into the bottle forcing the wine out and replacing the space left with the gas. When finished you remove the device and as the hole left by the needle is small the cork will close and reseal itself. The big question is does the inert gas actually affect the taste of the wine? I'm assuming the answer is no but only time will tell. Also, does the cork reseal itself fully? I'm guessing the answer to this is yes.Once again only time will tell. The nice thing is that replacement needle are available with different profiles although they're not cheap. The gas is also readily available. So far I have found this device to be extremely effective but I have only managed to test this over a couple of months so far. I'll keep the review update should things change.

The Coravin Model Two Elite is not for those cheap everyday bottles of wine. It’s definitely meant for those you want to savour and serve weeks, months or even years apart. It is a bit of a novelty but it does work and preserves the flavour well with the needle being able to be removed and the cork reseal without letting oxygen in so you can use the system on several bottles – ideal for wine tasting. The wine poured is replaced with argon gas hence the need for the argon capsules which means there is an additional cost to this kit though but they are actually not as costly as I expected them to be.The needles too will need replaced when they start to dull but I do like that there is a kit which includes 3 different types of needles – including a vintage needle which is much thinner and almost doubles the pouring speed compared to just the standard needle which is provided with this kit but this is where it starts getting a bit more expensive. Overall the system is pricey but it works very well and would suit a wine lover.

Bought as a special birthday gift as it is an expensive way to pour a glass of wine, both the cost of the initial device and the replacement gas capsules. 4 star rated as we don't yet know if it will be value for money, that depends on how many times we want 'just a glass'! But, it is a useful extravagance (indulgence) if you want just one glass of something special while still enjoying the rest of the bottle later without losing the quality. We haven't had it long enough to vouch for the longevity of the remaining wine but we trust the marketing claim of weeks not days is correct. The Model Two is stylish, comfortable to hold and easy to use, there are good online instructions and videos. Please learn from our mistake - once inserted the gas capsule must be left in place until its all used up (about 15 glasses) otherwise it will fully discharge - Coravin are considering an update to their product instructions. They kindly replaced our gas capsule pack. Its good we can recycle the metal gas capsules.

The Coravin Model Two Elite Wine System is a natty method of keeping wine in pristine condition from first glug to final dregs. It only works for bottles with cork stoppers, so you have to take care when buying the wine.Basically the gadget injects gas into the wine bottle by means of a cork-piercing needle and a pressurized gas cylinder so that the space which was filled by wine is filled by an inert gas. It does keep the wine fresh but the gas cylinders are expensive, so it’s a matter of balancing the costs of the one against the saving of the wine. It works but it isn’t free.Personally I don’t like the idea of injecting gas of any kind into my wine bottles. This is an unreasonable and unsupported view but that’s how I feel. The system does what it says so the choice is yours. I have no substantiated argument against it. It is well-made, looks fancy and will enhance your reputation as one who has the latest thing.

Ok so I will start by being honest and saying I didn't even know things like this existed. I do love a nice glass of wine but will again be honest in that I'm not one of the expensive set of wine lovers which I feel at it's current price it's clearly aimed at but that said it has meant that I have no need to open the bottle and finish in one sitting.yeah I know where's the fun in that....... But it does work and it works well by in effect inserting itself into the cork and sucking out the required amount leaving the bottle still sealed.... It works well and looks stylish but it's an expense so really only for regular drinkers of fine wines.

This will save a fortune on opened bottles of wine on a Sunday for dinner, we have a glass each, and don't generally drink through the week, and by the following weekend the wine's not drinkable anymore... With the Coravin, we can have that glass each, and the next weekend, it's as drinkable as it was when first opened and poured out.Downside - expensive item initially, and the gas canisters are very expensive too. Will find it's worth around Christmas I suspect, when there's half a bottle left after everyone's fallen asleep. It looks very smart, very futuristic and has brought a few comments about what it is, why lying on the side.

For the fancy dan in your life. Assuming you happen to know someone whose laid down a few cases in the cellar and likes to sample them over the course of a few evenings. Me, I come from a world where a bottle gets emptied. Quick. What you're getting is a really fancy version of a bottle stopper. And I mean fancy. It involves a needle and gas pressure and works in a way too complicated for me to understand. But work it does. I think you're sooking the wine out by the glass thus leaving the bottle preserved. But if you've got deep pockets and really, really like to savour your wine, then this is for you.

If you like to spend your money on good wine then this preservation system will make you feel like a professional sommelier by allowing you to take as much wine from a bottle as required without taking the cork out. Using a needle to penetrate the cork and release the wine and cleverly backfilling with argon gas, you gain unprecedented control over your wine and how you drink it. You are now no longer forced to see the bottle off (of course, you can if it's that good ?). It's a luxury item, but if fine wine is your enjoyment, then you need to have this in your armoury to protect your bottles. Perfect.

This is an expensive gadget, but, if you drink wine in excess of £15/bottle, it will be worth the money. How many times have you thought, 'I might as well finish it,' at the thought of that sour, stale taste the following day? Yes, I do think that the Coravin helps you drink less. You can simply have a glass at a time, meaning you will not only drink less units, but you will save some money too.It does keep the wine fresh, it does look impressive, it is easy to use. However, the cartridges, which last for 3-4 bottles at the most, at around £10/each, make this device a rather expensive gadget.

19.7.2018

This is a neat if somewhat expensive idea. This Coravin system allows you to pour your favourite wine by the glass, without pulling the cork.It uses a very thin hollow needle, which is inserted through the cork to extract just the amount of wine you like. You don't need to remove the cork so you can preserve the rest of the wine in the bottle for as long as you wish. This Coravin is a must for any wine aficionado and makes a great addition to all wine lovers’ drinking experience.Try it and see the results.

Gift for partner who loves it! Gas is expensive but we wont use frequently, usually a bottle gets drunk in a day or two, but if you fancy a single glass, this is perfect

26.7.2017

The Coravin is a brilliant product, which will revolutionise the way you consume wine. It allows you to open bottles without wasting any of the contents.
