Have you ever wanted just one glass of wine, but felt compelled to drink the whole bottle just because it’s open? The Vacu Vin solves that little conundrum admirably, and stops you looking like a lush!An open bottle allows air in, and the air oxidises the wine into acetic acid (vinegar). If you can remove all the air and stopper the bottle, no more oxidation, and the wine will keep for a few days. The way it works is really simple. Take a stopper, which is made in two parts, and wash it, shaking out the water afterwards. Reassemble the top and bottom parts and jam it firmly into your open bottle like a cork. Then take the pump and push the open end onto the top of the stopper, making sure you hold it down and grip the top of the bottle too. Then gently pump the plunger up and down a few times until you hear a distinct clicking sound. That’s it. The air has been removed from the empty space in the bottle, forming a vacuum, and anchoring the stopper into place. At first it looks like the stopper isn’t in properly, but if you try and gently tug it upward, you will feel the vacuum resisting. To release the stopper, push the rubber knob in the centre over to one side and you will hear the vacuum seal break with an audible hiss. Pour yourself a drink and reseal the bottle again. The instructions are pictorial and not that explanatory, but the Vacu Vin is hardly difficult to use. A little care the first couple of uses and you’ll be fine. Try to grip the bottle neck and pump end together with one hand vertically, and don’t tip the pump, otherwise you will not create a seal. I’d also advise not doing this on a slippery surface. The first time I tried my bottle slipped on the wooden kitchen table, which would have made quite a mess as the bottle was of course open. Pumping the bottle on a placemat gave it enough grip. After you have finished your bottle, wash and dry the stopper before storing, just so that you always have a clean one straight out of the box.I tested the Vacu Vin on a bottle of red wine, pouring a glass after uncorking, then sealing it for four days before pouring another. To my uneducated palate, the wine was perfectly fine and tasted the same as when I first opened it. I did the same thing the following day, and the day after that. The wine still tasted good to me. I would have tried a 7th day, but I ran out of wine!I’m really glad I bought this item, having seen it on YouTube. It allows me to have a single glass of wine when I want it without feeling the need (or using the excuse) to finish the lot because it would go bad. The stoppers are easily washable, and reusable, so this set is good value. Now that I’ve used it, my one regret is that I didn’t buy the set with four stoppers at the outset, but you can buy extra ones later. If you found my review helpful, please click the Yes button to let me know. This really really works - I am very happy with it. When I feel like a glass of wine, I can now have it without feeling guilty about throwing the rest away a couple of days later. I did my research online first and I was not aware that the best way to keep wine after being opened (also, shhhhh I know it seems like sacrilege..my favourite - Port!) was in the dark, and with this system, happily in the fridge. I wouldn't choose to do it with an expensive wine, not because I don't trust the product, I simply would use a humongous glass and after a refill the bottle would be empty anyway! But, seriously, living alone and often feeling like a glass of wine whilst curled up watching a film, knowing that I would end up throwing the rest away was always frustrating. The only thing that I had to get my head around with the Vacu Vin was to try and forward plan a bit because of the wine being cold. I didn't get a good result with leaving the wine in a glass on a warm radiator for like for evah innit! I pour some wine into a mug, put a small saucer on top and......yup! - bung it in the microwave! Shock Horror! I know. I have no shame - but it works for me. Before I get blacklisted by some secret wine tasting society, I hasten to add.. I would Not do it to a Chateau Lafite!.Joking aside, it is a great piece of kit. Easy to use and inexpensive. I highly recommend it. The only downside for me is that I don't particularly like plastic. I got the black one and I keep it in a kitchen drawer rather than on the drinks tray thingy - but that's just me. The simple, elegant, functional design is actually quite acceptable. En-hic-joy - Cheers!

I know there is a lot of debate abound concerning this product, and a lot of negative comments too. Before purchasing it I read arguments on both sides of the fence and then decided to go ahead and give it a try anyway. For my usage it's a well-made, effective and reasonably-priced solution to my problem which is that I prefer to buy full-size (not half-size) bottles. What you get from this product will vary depending on what you drink and how you drink it. I only drink red Bordeaux so my experience using this product relates only to that consumable. However, no matter what kind or what shade of wine you drink you need to realise the varied laws of science that are at play here insofar as withwine you are essentially dealing with an organic product that will rapidly deteriorate if exposed to oxidation, therefore, any wine which is opened should be drunk soon thereafter. All this product will do is give you a little bit of grace, it will not miraculously preserve your wine or reverse its degeneration. My own personal using style is based upon enjoying the taste and flavour of quality wines and not on consuming quantities. I therefore tend to drink half a bottle one one day and half on the next. If possible I also combine the opening of a bottle with the making of pasta and so I can use some in my sauce too. I also tend to put the bottle in my refrigerator between drinkings. If you approach opening and consuming a bottle in that manner I think you will find no noticeable deterioration in the quality and enjoyment of your wine. Certainly I have not.

This is ideal for those situations where you have a bottle of wine at dinner time yet don't manage to finish it off, so rather than throwing it away or drinking it there and then and immediately regretting it as you have work the next day you may want to invest in this little kit. Essentially you place the gray rubber stopper into the top of the bottle and place the vacuum pump on the top of that and then pump it, it eventually becomes impossible to pump it any further which indicates you have removed as much air as possible. With most of the air removed you have a small vacuum inside the bottle which essentially stops the wine oxidizing. It works equally well with White,Red and indeed sparkling wine although it's only effective for around 24 hours (maybe 48 in the case of red wine if you place it in a cool place). After this period you notice that the wine deteriorates quite quickly.Since using this kit we have yet to throw any bottle of wine away, so when i think of the amount of wine it has saved, it has essentially paid for itself.VERDICT: Excellent product and essential if you want to keep those bottles of wine from going past their best. Very good value for money and the rubber stoppers and pump feel well made and should last years at the very least. To finish i will just say one last thing, don't expect this to keep a bottle of red wine for more than 2 days or 24 hours in the case of White/ sparkling wine. For most people an extra 24 hours should be long enough to finish it off.RECOMMENDED!!

There are already some excellent reviews on this item, but I hope these comments are still of use following the purchase of this kit based on a personal recommendation.Kits contents: The standard kit (as at May 2014) includes two vacuum stoppers and a pump handle. The stoppers slip easily into standard bottles, but still create a good seal. They are absolutely fine in the dishwasher.Ease of use: Well designed items work easily and that applies here. The pump is placed on top on the stopper and pulled up and down a number of times to create a vacuum - the less wine there is in the bottle the more you have to pump. The pump makes a discreet clicking noise when sufficient vacuum has been created. To release the vaccum just takes the pressure from one finger on the stopper to release the seal and you are ready to enjoy another glass or two.Length of time it will save wine for: There seems to be quite a bit of disagreement in the reviews on this. I suspect this is down to different wines reacting differently as well as to personal tastes. We have found that it keeps red wine well for up to a few days, but would not really go beyond that.Overall: There are an awful lot of kitchen fad tools out there and I was sceptical this might be another one of those. I could not have been more wrong - it works well, is simple to use, it is well made, and helps avoid waste: a true kitchen 'must have'!Thoroughly recommended.

Sometimes we come across bad design, in all sorts of things, eg a 'waffle' material shower curtain which is not watertight, or metal dish holders that deposit rust on your plates and cutlery, or a guitar stand that scratches the finish on your new guitar, etc etc.But this item I have to say is an example of GOOD design, this is really a great item, it deserves an award. The stoppers are curved so they fit different sized bottle necks, and they dismantle so they can be cleaned easily. The vacuum pump is powerful and easy to use, just around 8 up-down strokes are needed, then the best bit - the CLICK - it indicates when a vacuum has been reached, so you don't have to just guess.(And with this you can also check a couple of days later whether there's still a vacuum). When opening the bottle again, you just push a little tab on the stopper to the side, and you then hear the air rushing in, and the stopper just comes out easily, ie you don't have to pull it out by force against the vacuum. The seperate stopper and pump, and availability of additional stoppers, means you can preserve several opened bottles at once, with only one pump needed. How good is that? This is smart design, and great for those who like a moderate drink of wine, eg a single glass in a day, rather than a whole bottle.Totally brilliant, best thing ever.

There are only two methods of ensuring the wine remains drinkable once the bottle has been opened - make sure the entire bottle is consumed within the day or use a VacuVin stopper! The natty little pump takes out the air (and it is the air which aids acidification - the wine going off!) and the special stopper prevents it getting back in again yet is simple enough to remove when you realise that the miniscule exertion involved in evacuating the air necessitated the consumption of just one more glass. For those who feel the need to put half a bottle of wine back on the shelf, this is the real solution for the rest of us we can demonstrate to our friends the potential frugality of our wineconsumption whilst guzzling the lot!Best not to use on Champagne since the vacuum sucks out the bubbles and flat Champagne is simply horrid - the only solution with Champagne is to consume it as soon as possible - who could complain at that.

We drink 9 bottles of white wine to 1 of red - and can get through a bottle a day! Some 10 years back (possibly more) I stocked up with VacuVin plastic pumps and stoppers and cooling sleeves, which are essential to enjoying white wine at the correct temperature, and preserving part used bottles. Pumped out bottles will last a month or more in the fridge (in our holiday home!)I decided I would replace some aged gear and went into the web to find it. It seems Le Creuset have now coloured the market, gone upmarket and no longer can you get plastic sleeves and plastic pumps. The sleeves are deluxe versions at approaching £20 and so are their finely sculptured pumps!Suffice to say that you were able to supply the pump and stopper(a struggle to find it!)but, alas, the plastic sleeve was beyond even Amazon - but thanks to John Lewis I was able to restock on the traditional plastic sleeves for just under £6.A gap in the market??

For someone who appreciates a glass of wine only every now and then, these have been a blessing for the number of bottles I've saved, and the dollars that goes with it.These are perfect for doing exactly what they say they'll do - keeping wine from going "off" after it's been opened and finished off over a week or two. Clean up is simple as the stoppers can be pulled in to two pieces for rinsing and cleaning under a tap.Well designed, and seeming very sturdy, these should last quite some time. Including two stoppers it's all I need. I did note that additional stoppers are available for seperate purchase (in packs of two) - good for those who like a bit of variety through a week,or to keep bottles fresher after a dinner party where several bottles may have been opened, allowing you to finish them off over the coming fortnight. In summary, very happy with this well made and thought out product.

FIRSTLY PLEASE NOTE THAT AMAZON SEND YOU THE NEW VERSION OF VACUVIN STOPPERS AND NOT THE OLD ONES PICTURED.Having used my parents old Vacuvin with the old style stoppers which worked brilliantly and after reading other reviews stating the new ones were rubbished, I was initially quite worried! But after a few uses now, I actually prefer the new style stoppers. You get a nice click noise from the pump so you know when you've reached vacuum, and the new stoppers come apart and so are easier to clean. And most importantly they keep wine and cider (the old style bottles) perfectly if you can't finish a bottle all in one night!I definitely recommend this product to anyone. From the avid drinker who will finish the bottle in one night (and just wants to keep it fresh throughout the evening) to the drinker who just likes one glass a night and wants their drink fresh over a few days.

I all but gave up buying wine until someone bought me one of these. I became frustrated by tipping half a bottle of good red wine down the sink a day after opening it when it had gone off, or feeling that I had to finish the bottle, and so feel worse for drink the day after. This item has changed all that. I no longer have to think about the waste if I just want a glass or two from a bottle. Simply push in the rubber bung and use the pump to suck all the air out. The wine keeps well for at least a week like this, and so is the perfect gizmo, if like me, you are a one or two glass per night regular wine drinker. The bungs are also dishwasher safe and after two years in mine, are still good as new.It may seem a little pricey for what it is, but considering the wine I have saved over the years, it really has been invaluable.Simple, elegant, quality item.

Brilliant tool; money well spent. I have had it only a month so I cannot comment for long term. I was influenced, it is true, by the positive reviews. I am happy with this product so far. When I visited my hometown in France, I went into a Cavavin shop, and the manager recommended to buy a wine pump in response to my enquiry about 1/2 bottles as I can't drink much at a time. The pump is the perfect solution to drinking wine by very small amounts. I also have some old vintages which I hesitate to open because I know the bottle won't get drunk entirely on first opening. I have had disasters in the past...Now, I feel confident I can enjoy those older bottles, and the younger ones too as they will retain all their powerful flavours. When the air is pumped out, one can 'sniff' the scents. I like this moment.

Always saw those rubber bottle stoppers in the local stores sold separately and even bought a few thinking they make sense. Now I know that you need a pump to make them sensible. As most of people here I sometimes have a bad mood which doesn't allow me to drink a single bottle in one go. Bough this thing just for those occasions. Well, it surely does it's job properly - just insert the stopper into your bottle, use the pump a few times (depends on the amount of wine left, obviously) and once hearing a 'click' sound - feel free to put the bottle into your fridge, on a balcony or into the hands of your mother-in-law. Can't recommend the place there - it should be your decision. And vacuum stays in the bottle properly - you will hear it the next day when opening the bottle again.

An excellent product which actually works. To be honest I was a little sceptical when I first tried it but its a great product which could easily pay for its self if you have had to throw away spilt wine. Depending on the room temperature, type of wine and age your bottle could last a few days more to over ten!I have found it to be excellent to keep a bottle of red open for one glass with a meal or cooking for a easy three or four days with almost no taste difference, which by I mean (depending on the bottle) on the fourth day it tastes like a nice aerated wine rather than sweet vinegar. Wonderful!Operation could not be any easier too, place stopper in bottle, attach vacuum wine saver, pump till it clicks and that is all. Easy.An excellent product, and good value too.

Like many other reviewers here, we have too often thrown away a partly drunk bottle of wine - but no more! This works perfectly every time and with a variety of bottles, even screw-top.Pump the plunger until it `clicks' and you're done - you can even lay the bottle back in your cellar and it keeps totally airtight and sealed, for weeks if need be. Tweak the nipple on the valve and release the vacuum to re-open your bottle. For the price of a decent bottle of wine this really does the job, quickly, simply, and easily. Enjoy dry whites, intense reds, or sweet dessert wine for longer. We got ours in the summer, and recently bought the two extra valves also available here on Amazon.Stop reading, get buying - it's a NO BRAINER!
