A definite must have purchase for anyone about to have a baby. I was able to get to 3 cm dilated without any pain relief but once at the hospital was grateful to be able to put this on and still wander around whilst the next few hours dragged.Downsides:1. The sticky pads are not brilliant if you need them quite low and want to keep oscillating positions, they do get crumpled up and start to come away from the skin, meaning that they are not as effective. I found that if I had been sitting or lying down I had to keep re-applying pressure to them when I had contractions but was standing up otherwise I couldn't feel them. This was really only a problem on my lower back ones not the higher ones.2.One of the pads/leads did stop working, fortunately I had read this may happen and so had purchased spares which I had taken and I have never been so grateful for them. Would definitely advise getting extra pads and connections.3. The pulse setting I found to be rather uncomfortable and actually intensified my contractions and hurt my skin even on a fairly low setting in the early stages but found a low setting useful as the labour progressed.Upside:1. Did distract from the early contractions and help with the muscle tightening2. Battery life was epic, I was in labour 18 hours and used the tens machine for over 11 hours of it and didn't have to replace the batteries or have any problem with them even though the machine was on constantly3. Very portable, had a clip I could fasten to my gown so that I could walk around easily and make it to the toilet, etc4. Easy to use and later in labour good as the leads were long enough for my husband to have 'control' of the pulse function. As I got tired he took over and was able to press it when he knew I was having a contraction, which helped him feel involved and gave him something to do (is a lot of waiting around for the bloke)Although quite expensive, it was £40 to hire one so was very glad I had purchased my own for the extra and could pack it in to my hospital bag well in advance knowing I was all sorted. Simple to use and effective particularly in early labour.

I used this for the birth of my second child last week. (Labor with my first child was very normal and healthy, but incredibly painful due to back labor, which I was told was related to the structure of my back/old injuries, and not the baby's position. My doula recommended I try a TENS machine in the future, especially if I wanted to have another drug-free birth.) I applied the electrodes as soon as my first contractions started (early labor) and used it until the "pushing" stage, when I instinctively instructed my husband to take it off. This device is not the only reason that my second labor was a lot easier and more positive than the first, but it was a really big factor. In addition to helping during labor, knowing that I had it on my "team" helped me be more relaxed and confident leading up to labor/birth. I loved that I could adjust the stimulation level (I started out really low and gradually built as my labor became more active/intense), and the boost feature gave me extra reassurance during contractions, especially when they were painful. As a lot of people say, it didn't take the pain away so much as provide an extra (and pleasant) sensation, kind of like having hot water poured on my back and/or getting just the right massage when I needed it. My back labor was minimal this time; most of my discomfort was concentrated in my cervix. (I used movement and breathing/vocalizing/visualization guided by my doula and massage from midwives to help manage that pain.) I am SO grateful for this device and will definitely use it again if I have another child. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to loaning it out to friends, especially those who, like me, had a natural and very painful first birth and want some extra help having a more positive natural birth the next time around. I'm from the US but have had both of my children overseas. I'm going to spread the word about TENS machines among people I know in the US--more moms (and their caregivers) need to know about this option!

I was sceptical about these.... but on recommendation I got one at the 11th hour... decided to buy with in mind I could sell it on if it didn't work and if it did I'd use it again for subsequent births to save money in the long run hiring them...This was my first baby and I have been nervous about birth all my life... I also wanted as little medical intervention as possible...When labour finally started I didn't bother putting on the tens machine, I was in too much discomfort and irritable to bother, only after a couple of hours when my husband insisted I at least give it a try, did I amaze at the instant relief.....I couldn't recommend this high enough... I ended up with an easy birth up to 9cm with no other help, then the little devil moved and got stuck and I had some additional gas and air to assist with the difficult delivery. The consultant and all midwives were amazed at how I got through such a difficult birth with no help... I put it all 100% down to the tens machine, it was fantastic. I loved being able to up the boosts when things moved along a bit.Worth every penny and some. I brought additional Larger pads with mine which the midwife at my birth recommended I use as the larger the pads the better the pain relief. After a long 16 hour labour, my son was born stress free with a 10/10 apgar. Thank you elle tens!My GP has also been amazed with my after birth recovery, again, no pain down below - which she attributes to the tens filling my body with natural endorphins which eliminated my pain for the recovery afterwards!1000 out of 1000!

I have a very LOW tolerance to pain. I can't stand any amount of pain and therefore I was TERRIFIED of my Labour . I went into labour early so I didn't even get a chance to try this out before . Once my Labour stared my pain was too much to handle so I quickly took this out and tried it .The BEST product I have EVER bought !!!! If you are scared of ur Labour pains or you know you will be screaming the hospital down then buy this . I am going to let my sisters borrow this because it worked so so so well for me. Without this I don't think I could have survived my Labour pains . You stick the pads onto your back and when your contraction comes you press the button.I would always have it on high but one my contractions got worse towards the end I put it on the highest . It gives this electric buzz feeling into your back which helps to handle the pain you feel in your stomach from the contractions . It can work as a distraction but for me it worked more than just a distraction , it almost helped to num my contraction pain but you are feeling such an unusual buzzing in your back that it does divert your bodies attention more to the buzz feeling you get .I will definitely be using this for my next Labour. It's pricey but worth every single penny and I thank whoever invented these .

I loved this and I bought one for both of my deliveries. I had very quick, straightforward deliveries. With my first pregnancy, the contractions lasted about 4 hours and they were horrendous. I remember lifting my body up as I supported all my weight on my back and elbows in the car seat. The tens machine worked, I think, in that it distracted my mind a bit from the pain of the contractions to a pain of the back. When I took it off before labour, I realized the pain I had been enduring from the tens machine was actually worse than my labour pain. It was a relief to take it off. So that's my one problem with this machine. You don't know when you've gone overboard. With my second delivery, the pain of the contractions was quite mild, and labour only lasted 2 hours, so I used the tens machine for a few minutes only. I would say it helped a bit. When you're in so much pain, even something as small as a tens machine can make a difference, so I would definitely recommend it to women. But don't expect any miracles. Birth can be relatively easy, or it can be the most painful thing you'll ever experience, and no tens machine will change that, because the tens machine will only be there for a few minutes or hours. I donated them after replacing the patches.

I bought one of these for the birth of my 3rd child after reading some of the recommendations of this product, and I'm so happy that I did. With my previous 2 births my epidural did not work for me so the only pain releif I had was the gas and air. This time round being older I wanted to try something else that would work with the gas and air. My husband put the pads on me as soon as the contractions started as it takes a little time for it to get your body to release the endorphines. We had an hours drive to get to the hospital and I would have been lost with out the tens machine! It is easy to use (read the mannual before you need to use it so you know what to do in advance!)It does not stop the pain,BUT it truely does take the raw edge of pain away. It took me all the way up to 7cm and then an epidural was given. But I can honestly say that in the first to mid stages of labour it was a god send, and you can use it after to help the usual after birthing pains. If your going to buy one of these machines, good luck with your birth and be secure in the knowledge that this will help you, it wont stop the pain but it does help more than you can imagine!

I bought this as I liked the idea of trying to go as long as possible without drugs during labour. My baby was back to back so I had all my contractions in my back so this was an absolute life saver. Words cannot express how much I loved and appreciated this during labour. It has four pads that go on your back; two on your pant line and two on your bra line, either side of your spine. You can adjust the top or bottom pads separately according to your pain level and the boost button is there for when the contractions get intense. The best way to describe the feeling of TENS is similar to well known muscle-toning equipment. The sensation is a bit prickly at first but then settles into a deep massage sensation.I combined this with paracetamol and was able to reach 8cm before needing anything stronger. On this occasion it is one of those purchases that was well worth spending the money on. It kept me calm and in control and best of all you can use it for post natal pain and any other pain so not just restricted for use in labour. I had contemplated just renting this as they suggest in antenatal classes but so glad I bought it. Thoroughly recommended!

I had one of these when I was pregnant, for some reason I sold it after my child was born. I've recently purchased a second one for non-pregnancy related pain relief as I believe this is the best one on the market for the price.Perks:1. Can be used with two electrodes or four - meaning it's easy to treat small or larger areas.2. Controls are straight forward, no need to lose hours reading the manual.3. Excellent range of strengths, so you can build up or go as delicately as you need to.4. Unit has a good deep belt clip so you can clip it onto clothing, or you can use the neck strap it comes with.5. The electrodes are sticky enough to stick and stay without ripping out hair when you remove them.6.Replacement packs of electrodes are easy and reasonably cheap too purchase.7. It takes 2 AA batteries to work, but arrives with 4. You are good to go, and keep going - everything you need is included.8. Excellent for frozen shoulders, back pain, hip pain etc as well as pregnancy/labor related discomfort.Cons:1. You may need assistance placing electrodes in those harder to reach spots on your back.

I have used this tens machine for the birth's of both my sons.I found it really easy to set up and use with plenty of adjustable settings, so that you can tailor the intensity to your needs as things progress. The instruction booklet is clear and easy to follow. I also liked that it came with its own storage pouch, which was good for having it handy in the hospital bag.The boost button is a really great feature as it helps you feel in control of doing something to manage your contractions. The strap allows you to hang the machine around your neck, so you always know where it is and can have your hands free for having a drink and moving around. You can use it from early labour to build up endorphins right through to the birth itself.I had two very different labours. One was a 9 hour hospital one and the second a 2 hour home birth, where I used the tens before getting in a pool. Throughout both I felt I only needed this and gas and air, so found it really effective. I have already recommended this to several friends and family members and would do to anyone else planning a birth.

I used this throughout a lot of my labour, until I got into the pool. I wasn't sure how effective it would be, I was a bit apprehensive about using it, but I'm so glad I purchased it. I decided to buy one outright as it wasn't much more than it would've been to hire one, and I felt more comfortable just having one of my own ready in my hospital bag. It really helped me focus on breathing and getting through the early contractions. It's great for labour pains in the lower back, which is where mine were. It doesn't take the pain away, it just dulls it, but I would say to anyone reading this, if this is your first baby and are very anxious about labour (like I was), then please consider purchasing this.We went to the hospital three times, and on the third occasion the midwife still thought I would have to be sent home, she didn't realise I was 6cm dilated as she said I was coping with the pain so well. I feel this is partly down to the TENS. I would recommend it, there's absolutely no harm in trying it and having it just in case. I've now lent it to my friend.

Those who prefer drugfree pain relief should consider this product. My wife used it when giving birth to my daughter because she preferred drug free birth (better for baby) and said it truly made a difference. The working principle is that stimulates the production of body morphines and in addition it has a distracting effect so that all in all it helps you through the difficult phases. The unit has plenty of option to change settings (big/low, duration, etc.) - I would say even a bit more than needed. Once you use it the only way the find out what works best for you is trying out several settings. The self adhesive electrode pads that come with it are of good quality: they are thick, stick easily and last long. We even removed them half-way to take a shower, and afterwards could put them back on withouth any issue. The unit comes with one set of pad, and two sets of batteries. I bought it with an extra set of pads just to be sure to have a spare available when needed, but due to the quality of the pads this was not necessary.

I bought this before the birth of my second child. My first labour experience was such a nightmare and I was willing to try anything to avoid a repeat. I SO wish I had this during my first labour! At the onset of the first contractions, I had my husband help me put it on. It says it works best if you start before the pain gets too bad. As things picked up, I increased the output and it really, really made a difference! It really helped me feel in control of the pain, have something to focus on (pushing the "OMG button" that temporarily increases the output), and helped keep me relaxed, which I am convinced helped my labour move along much more quickly. The quality and price was fantastic. My only wish was that the electrodes stuck slightly better, as I had a few "mishaps" where they would release and suddenly the "zapping" was gone and I could feel all the pain. For the love of Pete, put that back on!I can not praise this item enough!

We bought the Elle Tens for our first pregnancy. As soon as my wife started to get contractions we used the unit on a low setting. After a short time my wife thought that it was helping with her pains and the boost button definitely helped. The whole labour was over in 7hours so it was very quick and intense and we only got to wear it for a few hours. We were still on a relatively low setting when we stopped using the item - there were plenty more power settings available had labour lasted longer and been more gradual. We only stopped using when my wife got into the birthing pool and used gas and air (you can't wear in the pool). The machine was easy to use and I showed my wife how to change settings in labour. She quickly got to understand altering the various settings as and when required. Felt nice and chunky, big buttons to use and the chord was useful for hanging round the neck. Very glad we bought this.

This made a massive difference for my wife during labour. It works with electrical impulses stimulating the muscles (similar to the slendertones etc). These impulses will stimulate our bodies pain relief! While this model is very useful for labour, with the boost function for contractions - it can also be used for general aches and pains. Although if you are pregnant, don't use it for general purposes, it can induce early labour!!Also don't use the boost function if you aren't in labour! You can rent these from a lot of reputable companies. But the cost works out similar to buying one! Ours is on standby in case we have another baby in the future, it has also been leant to friends for labour! You might not like it when you're in labour. But for the cost, buy one anyway - because you might just absolutely love it in the early stages and it makes things more bearable!

I bought this for my wife having read the other reviews. My wife was not impressed. We were in hospital when my wife went into labour with our first child. The ward was very busy and no one attend to us. So I got the TENs machine out attached it to her and she said it really helped. Over the next two hours we went through all the level settings, especially useful was the 'Boost' which is a 'one button press' overdrive for when you are having contractions. The four pads give a much wider coverage than two pad machines and the setup is very simple which helps when you're flustered, tiered, and in pain. It doesn't remove the pain it just made it bearable and gave her a feeling of having some control over the pain.By the time a midwife got to us she was fully dilated and the baby was born 6 minutes later on gas and air. Wife later said it was the best thing I have bought.
