Five years ago I injured my back and it's never really recovered leaving me with sporadic sharp shooting muscular spasms, dull aches and ongoing pain. I don't like taking medication, various stretchy support braces have only helped marginally but the best pain relief (or pain masking) was a TENS machine which has been my best friend ever since. This is a newer design of TENS machine which offers not only the highly effective pain masking of a TENS but also EMS, ie Neuro-Electronic Muscular Stimulation which is designed to massage and relax muscles and help prevent pain before it occurs.I have been using this machine for nearly a month and now have a new best friend, replacing the earlier model. In TENS mode, it offers 8 programs designed to reduce or block pain by increasing the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, relaxing and/or massaging muscles. With the electrodes placed on my lower back, it feels like a series of tingles, 'fizzing' or wave-like pulsations depending on the program chosen. At first it can feel a little odd, tingly or even ticklish but after about 20 minutes following the machine's first use, starting with a low intensity and increasing, it is barely noticeable and the body quickly adapts to it. With 8 programs available, it can be trial and error to determine which works best and I cycled through all the programs before settling with 'P2' for pain blockage and reduction of muscle spasms, usually following a short spell on the 'P8' mode which is a combination of all the programs and good for a boost at the start of each day or when pain is especially bad.I found the EMS mode particularly good at the start or end of the day for giving my lower back muscles a 10-20 minute 'workout' either before a busy day of standing on my feet or sitting for prolonged periods. The best thing about using this TENS is that it is doesn't involve taking any medications so there are no side effects to deal with. It is discreet to wear as the main unit can be worn on a belt or dropped into a pocket and the four electrode pads can be adhered to the upper or lower back, shoulder, arms, legs, abdomen or wherever pain occurs excluding the head and face. The pads are cheap to replace and any brand or unbranded can be used making the TENS/EMS unit very inexpensive to use, especially for longer term conditions. It is powered via 3 AAA batteries (supplied) for complete portability and a carrying bag is supplied.Definitely recommended without hesitation for anyone suffering with chronic or even occasional muscular pain, especially back pain. It really does help.

I remember back in the 90’s when things like this came out as cosmetic face tightening devices they cost a fortune, and then later as devices for both pain relief and muscle toning. The Pro Relax does both pain relief and muscle toning. The pain relief seems to work pretty well. I’m a web developer and spend a lot of time at the screen, then when I go home I do exactly the same thing for pleasure (yeah, I know, I’m an absolute geek!). Anyway, I get some neck pain, and this device has helped. The muscle toning I’m less sure about, but then I have not used it regularly. The Pro Relax works by passing a current through two pads (you get two pairs), and this current induces the muscles to flex. The pattern and intensity of the current can be varied via a number of preset patterns to give different effects. In practice, all of the treatments feel like pins and needles rather than a massage. Some of them are designed to blot out pain, and others are designed to move your muscles for exercise. As you increase the current, the muscle movements induced by the current can get quite large. They are not painful, but it can be quite weird to see your arms moving without your say-so! I suspect the original face toning devices were the same concept as the Pro Relax, but with a lower current; same 'pins and needles feeling'.What I like about this product. It is cheap enough to try out for yourself. It certainly helps for pain relief, and suspect the muscle toning will help as a come down routine after traditional exercise (i.e. to get oxygen and circulation back into the muscles as quickly as possible) rather than an exercise regime in its own right. It is small, and can be worn as you move around.Disadvantages? The instructions could be a bit better. The technology is not described and neither is the medical background. There are many programmes available, and they come with less than memorable names (TENS P1 to P8, EMS P1 to P8) and they do not have a relationship to each other (P1 is not related to P2, etc). The instruction book is therefore integral to using the device because you need it to read off the right programme. Having it printed on the back of the device (or even on a card) might have been more useful.ConclusionOverall, a fairly inexpensive device that may well work for you. I wouldn’t choose this primarily for exercise (although it might help), but more for pain relief and relieving aches, which the Pro relax addresses by either relaxing taut muscles or by flooding the pain signal with a rhythmic pulse to the affected nerve area.

I like working out but I don’t have the body of a god. I thought I try this out for the EMS muscle training. My partner is also a bit of a fitness freak, having played college sports to high level. She still works out a lot and does suffer from muscle pain, so the TENS relief was another reason to try this. Together we’ve been using about a month now, and are moderately happy with the results. We feel it works better for the TENS muscle relief – having used it on lower back and calf muscles (where my partner suffers pain). It’s a very easy thing to operate, with pre-programmed setting that’s last between 5 to 20 minutes. You can increase the intensity of the ‘pulse’ that runs through the muscles, and we’ve done it to the highest level where it’s uncomfortable but not painful (although other people may have a different opinion!). The pads that come with it are very sticky but easy to remove and place back into the packaging. (I’m unsure how long these last, but have done fine for regular use over 4 weeks. Extra pads can be bought separately). It also comes with a 2-year warranty, which is always appreciated!Using it for EMS muscle training, it will obviously force your muscle to work-out while you sit around and veg-out in front of the TV, which is great if you really don’t want to do sit-ups all day. However, if you’ve got a layer of fat/beer belly sitting on top of it, like me, then you’ll still need to go out for a run! Do some cardio as this won’t turn you into a beast without any effort.Using it the TENS relaxant, it works very well. Using it whenever my partner has a mild spasm, and/or aches and pains, applying these for a few minutes has proven beneficial. Simply laying still with this applied has calmed down the pain, stopping it completely. This doesn’t stop the pain from returning after exercising again, though – it’s not a cure – but it is a comfortable form of pain relief. There are some extra accessories that can be bought, which includes a belt for your abs and lower back use:

While there are a few niggles with this they don't detract from the fact that it really does make a difference. With two problems to cope with, a back muscle that causes considerable pain especially when it spasms, and an unidentified problem in one leg which gives considerable discomfort along with occasional numbness, this little device had its work cut out. It provided immediate relief from the worst of the pain, and more importantly allowed me to get on and do things that otherwise would have been too painful. Set to the programme that provides a bit of everything it relaxed the troublesome back muscle, preventing it from tensing painfully, while providing gentle massage which eased the overall pain. Now for the niggles. It is fiddly to set up (as I find all devices that use multifunction buttons), but what I find most irritating is that you cannot having set it going meaningfully move from one programme to another to make comparisons and see which works best for you, for when you do switch programmes the intensity setting reverts to zero. So by the time you have fiddled around with the various buttons to increase the intensity you've probably forgotten what the previous programme was to make a comparison. The instructions could be more helpful. I cannot see anywhere that tells me how often or for how long I can use the device (apart from the statement “the long-term effects of this system are unknown”). Other TEMS I’ve used have been quite specific on this, so I’m a little puzzled. It is possible this information is hidden somewhere in the excessively repetitive warnings and occasional disclaimers but I fear I lose patience with what seems to be written more to protect the manufacturers than to help the user; at one point it says it is intended for use on healthy muscles only, how does that make sense?

I have been a keen user of a TENS machine in the past as they do actually work rather well or I should say they do in my case. I have poor circulation in my legs and it’s been getting worse of late so what better time to give this new to me model a test run so to speak. It comes in a nice and sturdy box which is handy to know if it’s being sent through the mailing system - a minor point but worth mentioning. Once unwrapped, it’s about the size of a mobile phone, as in smallish, and comes with the leads and four self adhesive electrodes for want of better words that you attach to your affected area/s plus decent instructions. Having read the instructions, you insert the batteries and then attach the pads to the area that is giving you problems. I will say the feel and style of this main unit is quite robust and feels ‘right’ and not liable to fall apart after minimal use like one model from a different maker I saw a friend had brought a while ago. Once attached, you slowly glide through the various settings or ‘modes’ to find which is the one is right for you and then it’s a case of sitting back and letting the machine do its stuff. For those wishing to still be ’up and about’, no problem as there is a small clip to enable you to attach it to your clothing. The fact this is adjustable settings-wise means you are in total control as the overall effect can be very soothing and as I pointed out at the beginning, I do find these devices do offer relief from pain, not a cure, but relief and finally its down to the user and their own individual needs is where it matters most and with care I find the self adhesive pads last quite well and good for quite a few applications. I have been using a Med-Fit 3® Digital Dual Channel TENS Machine for almost 2 years for pain relief after a car accident. The aforementioned machine has 4 small sticky electrodes and so it can be positioned around a particular spot or it can be used for wide-ranging relief. By having two different channels for the pulse variances, which the user sets, you can create any intensity you want, there are no pre-sets. The machine is also connected to the control box by wires and overall it works very well. When this item came up on the Vine programme I thought I would jump at the chance of owning a "better"/more expensive machine.Firstly, the control centre is quite small and unobtrusive. The major difference with this Tens machine over the MediFit is that the 4 sticky pads are slightly larger. This allows for a greater area of stimulation/pain control. To some, this will not matter, as with acute pain in one area, you will want all the electrode heads close together, so as to alleviate specific pain in a small area. With childbirth, there is a more general pain over a larger area (thank you Mrs C) and so the larger pads are far more ideal. The device appears to be very well made and is certainly less flimsy than my original machine. The modes of stimulation are designed to both stimulate and ease painful muscles. If you find Tens machines help your pain, you will find this very useful.Overall this is a great machine and it does relieve pain whilst stimulating the muscles. Whilst there are niggles (the heads are a bit slimy) I am still happy to Recommend this product.

An excellent TENs machine. Firstly it comes with 4 pads (while my previous machine only has 2 - NB. Bodyclock do a machine with 8 pads for those with multiple areas of pain).Second the stimulation starts straight away at the level 1 on the machine, my previous machine had to be turned up to 30 or higher before you could feel anything).I used it on my shoulder where I have a chronic injury that is painful a lot of the time. This machine has programs for TENs (for pain) and for EMS (for toning), so you can do some quick toning of your abdominals as well as sort out your backache. There are several different programs. I used no.8 for my shoulder and did find it helped though I used the 5 minute programme 3 times.Ah if I'd read the manual I'd have found it's easy to change the time by pressing Mode while setting the machine up. I find you need about 20 minutes or longer for pain and also for toning probably 30-60 minutes. The package contains a lot of German language leaflets for other products but instruction booklets in French, German, English and Spanish.Overall I really like this machine, a nice robust German made device; with 4 pads to allow more intense pain relief. I have used these machines for years to stimulate acupuncture points for back pain for my husband and it's really transformed his life.If you are comparing with other devices, look at number of pads you can use, number of different programmes and if it does Pain and Toning as well.

This arrived just in time. An unfortunate position while sleeping a couple of weeks ago left me with agonising neck and shoulder pain, almost unable to turn my head left. I've never used a Tens machine before and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to see if it'd help my recovery. The unit itself is a classic ipod sized rectangle. Definitely portable, even with batteries (included) installed. It comes with a handy clip so you can attach it to your clothes while it's in operation. The package comes with a nifty back to keep the pads and wires together. The build is high quality - the wires and sockets feel like they can take some use, while the pads are super sticky. The interface for turning on the stimulation is simple and reasonably well explained in the manual. After unpacking the box, I had the pads attached to my neck and upper shoulders.Tens is a really strange sensation if you've never tried it before. You feel your muscles contracting involuntarily, your skin tingles. I find it pleasant and soothing, but I expect it could freak some people out. After using it on my almost-immobile neck, I definitely felt some loosening and pain relief. Obviously time is the healer (along with paracetamol and diclofenac sodium!) but the Pro Relax certainly made my recovery more comfortable.Overall, this is a quality device and I expect to use it again and again on my various aches and pains.

I'm not attempting to say whether or not this product will work to deal with any particular pain you may have as that would be wrong. This is a review about the device itself and what it does. First of all, it is very small. You get the controller and 4 pads which are about 40mm square. These are coated with a stick substance that allows you to get them to stay on your skin. I can't comment on how long they last but it seems very effective. If you are anything like me, you only skim the manual so here is what you need to do to get the thing working as it took me a couple of goes and I was beginning to think it was broken, User error as usual! You need to have the pads in place on your skin first and connected. They work in pairs and these pairs can be set separately. Next use the mode button to select the basic programmes and the time for treatment. There is no start and stop button as such and the treatment is felt as the intensity setting is increased. Looking at its small size I thought it would need cranking up but no - the effects can be very instense indeed. Don't be fooled by the size. You can apparently get other attachments and of course replacement pads.Seems like a fair price if you think something like a TENS machine might do the trick. This one is of course dual function.

I have tried different styles of TENS machines over the past few years and some which were much more expensive and with more different levels than this one, but this for me is the winner.I have had bad neck and upper back pain/tightening for the past few weeks and last night I finally took the time to unpack this new machine and what a difference it made! It was painful! But afterwards the relief was wonderful! And I'm still enjoying the relief this morning in the office. The selling points for this machine:• Dual effect with the TENS and EMS Duo therapy mode• TENS Function: For the relief of chronic intractable pain• EMS function: For relaxation and for the training of muscles• 2 channels,8 different programs, 12-step timer, adjustable intensity and treatment time• 2 years warrantyDefinitely recommended both as pain relief and as a de-stresser. And it is very reasonably priced. It requires 3 AAA batteries (included) and as per usual with the TENS machines, you have to ensure that you buy the extra pads, as there is only one set in the box and they do wear out rather fast and it's not really something you want to share with others.

I`ve used a few TENS machines over the recent years, and I`ve also used the EMS-style muscle training machines too. This doesn`t compromise on either function in it`s bid to make a 2-in-1 device. I did think that it`d be reaching a small market - you has muscle pain and also wants to use the muscle trainer? - then I realised that I do. And logically, almost anyone that has one would like the other. So it`s probably a very good idea. It works slightly better as a TENS in my opinion, but then I`m on other pain-relief meds so that isn`t as big a problem for me as it was once. The muscle trainer is not as good as specialist like the one Ronaldo advertises, but then it`s a lot cheaper - that pulsing on the muscle thing is hardly something that works independent of exercise so it`s a bit of a gimmick to me, but you can feel it doing something. It only just reaches the level where it is uncomfortable, and most people would be able to withstand it. In conclusion, the most important part - to me - is the TENS, and that`s good; the EMS part is less good.

Luckily for me the recurring back problem that comes back to haunt me from time to time has been notably absent since I got this. But unfortunately I finally had cause to try it out properly over the last week following a nasty spasm. I am impressed by the range and power of the stimuli delivered by this little box on AAA batteries - each TENS cycle has noticeably different sensation though all of them seemed to help with the spasms and pain. I can't say how much of this might have been placebo effect but as it made my experience of the pain better I am not too worried. My main criticism is that I feel a quality device at this price should come with some more electrode pads to get you going. The supplied set will last a few uses but if more than one member of the household wants to use it then it's not ideal to start with just one full set. I am also not sure whether I can use rechargeable batteries after the supplied ones run out of charge.Otherwise well worth having around for the next time my back complains....

I bought this TENS machine as a replacement for an older Boots Advanced TENS machine that ceased to work before the Christmas holidays. This prorelax EMS & TENS machine DUO is a compact unit that is easy to wear and clips unobtrusively onto a belt/waistband or fits comfortably into a shirt pocket, so it can be easily worn during the day. The unit is easy to use and the controls are intuitive. There is a good choice of programs for both TENS and EMS with an instructive booklet with suggestions on how to choose the most suitable program for different types of pain relief/muscle stimulation.I am a regular user of a TENS machine, but my machine had been out of action over the Christmas holidays and my chronic back pain had worsened considerably over this period.I gained immediate relief from lower back pain after a couple of sessions with this Prorelax machine. One minor criticism is that the instruction booklet makes no mention of being able to use rechargeable batteries.

This is a really simple basic TENS machine. I first used a TENS machine for the very specific experience of childbirth, but soon found that it was so helpful that I was much better able to manage my pain management. After using TENS for my labours for my children, I didn't need to use one for years, but more recently, I have been suffering with ongoing back and knee issues and as I am reluctant to become reliant on painkillers, I thought I should try using TENS for pain relief for my pain. You can move the patches to focus on the area causing you pain or discomfort. I have found that it helps with pain and with muscle tension and spasms.I have worked through all of the programmes and I find that different programmes work better for different situations. The handset is really compact and easy to use and it is easy to up the power on each of the two channels and easy to change programme using the keypad.

Absolutely amazing! This is my first experience with a TENS machine. I have suffered with lower back pain for just over two years. I was recommended to get a TENS machine, and after a bit of research this one seemed like the best option! After reading the leaflet which explains the settings and durations recommended for each- I chose one and managed to eventually turn it up to the maximum setting. I feel such a pain relief already! I recommended this to anyone I have already messaged those I know who suffer with similar issues! It's really easy to set up and there is a lock mode so you don't need to worth about knocking buttons and unintentionally turning it up or down while you are using it!Just a side note- make sure you use all four electrode pads at once,I tried just using the two however the machine only works with four!
