We already own a Fire 7 (5th gen) and an iPad mini (2nd gen). Surprisingly enough, this Fire HD 8 was bought to replace the iPad. My kids prefer the Fire, and they fight over who gets to play it. The reason is simple: the iPad requires games to be bought individually from the App Store, and since popular games like the Toca Life series are £4 each, I have to limit the number of games they’re allowed. In contrast, the Fire for Kids app allows them to browse and download anything they want, from a curated, age-appropriate selection, of games, video, books and Audible audiobooks. They like the fact that they can download without asking for permission.Meanwhile I can control things like screen-time limits or age filters from either the parental control screen on the device, or the Amazon Parent Dashboard webpage. It’s a safe walled garden. That’s the main selling point of this device. Everything else is nice-to-have, but ultimately irrelevant.Still reading? Here’s the nice-to-haves that make this Fire HD 8 better than the other Amazon tablets for me: Firstly, the faster processor does make a difference. Startup time and download time for apps is noticeably faster. The 8-inch (1280 x 800) screen is a huge improvement versus the 7-inch (1024 x 600) one. It might not seem like much on paper, but it’s really noticeable when playing games and watching video. Due to the slightly more rectangular aspect ratio, the screen looks significantly bigger than our iPad mini (despite the difference in diagonal measurement being only 0.1 in). Presumably the 10-inch model would be better still, but I didn’t want anything that bulky. The USB-C port is another nice-to-have. Our older Fire tablet uses Micro USB, and I still, after all these years, have to check the orientation to make sure I’m plugging it in the right way. Sure, it’s not a big deal, but it’s nice to get rid of this little annoyance. The stand looks like a gimmick, but it’s already proven to be very handy. The angle is steeper than I expected (almost vertical, and can’t be adjusted), but it’s just right for watching video without having to prop it against something. As for its durability, all I can say is that I bought the Fire 7 with Kid-proof case when it first came out… (checks notes) 5 years ago. It gets dropped pretty much every day, and it still survives. That’s pretty durable.Yes, it’s not perfect. I’ve tried to use it as a ‘grown-up’ tablet, and I find the Fire OS rather too ‘locked-down’. The Amazon App store has a reasonable selection (including, surprisingly, apps like Skype and Zoom), but the lack of Google Play apps like Gmail and Google docs quickly becomes frustrating. But my kids have never needed any of that, and realistically, these devices weren’t made for ‘real work’.Another thing to watch out for is that it needs a bit of setup out of the box. You need to connect to WiFi, enter your Amazon password, skip through a 2-minute intro video and set up a child account before it’s ready to use. Mine also required a software update right out of the box. All told, it only took about 10 minutes to set up, but it’s probably best to do this before handing it over to an excited child. The only real downside is that this tablet is a bit more expensive than previous versions. That said, consider that the standalone Fire HD 8 without “Special Offers” (i.e. lockscreen ads) costs £99.99. You get 1 year of “Fire for Kids Unlimited” subscription with the device, which usually costs £1.99/mo for Prime subscribers (£3.99/mo non-subscribers). This means that at current prices, I’m paying £16 for the kid-proof case and 2-year warranty, which is a pretty good deal as far as I’m concerned.

I got this as a gift for my children during lockdown.I love the fact they have their own profiles, timers set by parents and extra apps can be added (we have added sky kids and netflix as these werent on already).Found it to be a bit of a faff with getting the extra apps, downloading the game on parents profile then having to go into the kids profile to approve/add them to their profile, but after a bit of messing around we figured it out!I googled how to add playstore onto the tablet (only available in adults profile) so we could add other games we have on our phones etc. There are videos on youtube that talk you through it - easy enough to follow and worked first time.We love the case, the kick-stand on it is really useful. The case is smooth and not too bulky. The charge on it lasts all day. The camera is good and the pictures are accessible through the parents profile which is a good feature. The volume is good for the size of the tablet. The amazon kids unlimited, included with the tablet is good - has loads on it!As a starter tablet, i think its certainly money well spent. Not the cheapest out there but i think the extras are worth it!We are all really happy with the tablet - not just for the little ones!

I purchased one for each of my daughters so that they could watch their films and tv shows on Disney+, use Mathletics and play suitable games and read books in their quiet time.I was very happy with these when they arrived, they had everything in the boxes to get going with very little effort. The build quality is great and the removable protective case is great with its built in kick stand and sound direction vents.Once the tablets are setup and active, children can download what ever they likefrom amazon at no extra cost, and setup favourites with ease.As a parent, there as so many controls to restrict their usage that are easy to use.As an adult you can download apps from the full app store such as Disney+ and then share the content with the children. You can check what apps they use,how much they use them and if they use the web you can view their history. All in all, these are great kid friend tablets and have brilliant parental controls.Pros- easy to setup- lots of kid friendly content- lots of parental controls- great exchange process if faulty or damagesCons- can sometimes be a little sluggish, but not enough to cause issues

I absolutely love the kids fire tablets. This is the 3rd one I’ve purchased. I previously bought 2 of the 7 inch versions at Christmas for my grandkids and they were made up with them. They are a great addition to any household, the gc play games, learn new stuff and watch videos on them. They’re great to carry around with you especially if you need to keep the kids quiet for a little while, at an appointment etc and you don’t want to give them your expensive phone to play with and risk it getting broken. Just give them this and some headphones and they’ll be easy to occupy. These kids fire are so sturdy,The chunky rubber cover protects it really well from drops of the edge of the sofa as we all know what kids can be like haha.I’ve just purchased the 8 inch one for when the gc come round so there’s always one here for them to play on. My youngest loves to teach me all the new songs and nursery rhymes he learns watching the videos. I can’t rate this high enough for the price and durability, you can’t beat it!

A very good product for the kids especially, my daughter is to have one of our phones to watch YouTube or play a little game so buying this device was one of the best decision ever. The tablet comes with a pink plastic case just perfect fabric and quality. The sound and the image are very clear ,u can select the child`s age and automatic all the games and videos will be download on the main screen according to the age selected. Also the child can't watch YouTube anymore (my one always asking where us YouTube ):)) I create a profile for her and one for me where I can download what do wants to play or watch but YouTube definetly is restricted and is a good thing ,she spends less time on the tabletand more playing out in the garden or indoors.

It was birthday present for my 7 years old daughter and she is really happy. I got for such a good price. The best part that it has all my daughters favorite games and videos, so simple to use, it's also lightweight and easy to carry. Video quality is good, I am satisfied with battery life. The case is sturdy, and bright pink colour is perfect for the girl. The screen gets dirty easily so I need to clean every day but it seems easy to clean with lens wipes. In overall I am happy and I am gonna buy another one for my son.

Couldn't be happier with this tablet the battery lasts all day even with me using it aswell for Netflix. Came with 1 year kids unlimited so very spoilt for choice what to watch/play and once games are downloded great for long car journey. Able to have kids safety setting on/off so dont have to worry about little ones watching things they shouldn't. Very easy to use also had a great child proof case not to bulky but really protects.

My daughter had this for Christmas 20 months ago, she recently smashed the screen. I contacted amazon because there is a no fuss 2 year guarantee and had a replacement delivered the next day! Amazing customer service. The tablets brilliant and my daughter can download any games or watch any videos without the worry of them being appropriate or accidentally buying things because it’s just for kids.

We bought 2 for our children during lockdown (3.5 yrs and 1.5 yrs) they both love them. They are easy to use for them, great parent controls. We have previously used our iPad for eldest and have been undecided about buying these instead, I am very happy they do everything that they need and more.

This was purchased for my grandson's 1st birthday. He absolutely loves watching his favourite programmes and learning from this device. I highly recommend it for any youngster. This is the second tablet from Argos that i have purchased. For both my grandson's. Very hard wearing and reliable.

Battery life could be longer.Wish there was a way to control what apps are on the fire too as on permanently remove them. Also wish there was an easier way to download apps onto the kids account instead of switching between the two to download and then share.

Would be good if when you have time for it to turn off for it to give child warning to avoid being in middle of game/meltdowns.Also daughter will like look of app and can't see what it is unless in parents mode meaning she downloads to see what it is.

Bought this for the learning apps and my daughter loves it, with all that's going on we thought its be good to carry on the bit of tech she has at school at home she lives the puzzles. Will be great for when we have holidays again for the journey

Extremely easy to set up.Very versatile. My 3 year old has dropped it several times and it’s been no bother.Great that you can set time limits on so that they only get a certain amount of time on there.Really pleased. Happy son, happy mum.

being age specific, there's nothing we need to worry about in terms of appropriate content for our little one. She loves it and has developed a sense of independence since receiving it as a gift from her new born baby brother.
