This review is for people who are not sure what they're supposed to do and are worrying like I did! It took me a while to decide if I should buy this set for my 5 year olds Birthday cake, based on the fact I didn't know exactly which materials I should use and not having a clue how to use it! I finally decided to buy it to make it cheaper than having someone make one for us. First if all I put holes in the bottom of all the turrets that we're going to be actually on the cake with a tiny screwdriver. I had someone make the bottom tier for me and I bought a plain cake for the top tier. I decorated the turrets, door, windows and main section in advance and used Wilton ready to use icing tube in pink sprinkled with with pink sparkles.I used icecream cones covered in royal icing and pink sprinkles for the top of the turrets as the ones that came with the set were too heavy. I also used royal icing for the sides of the main section. On the day of the party I tiered the cakes using a video from YouTube (I used s thin cake board the same size as the top tier and 4 wooden BBQ skewers!) . I assembled it all (the doors and windows just slot in, the main section was stuck on with royal icing) and the turrets I again used the BBQ skewers, they fit the holes perfectly and could be cut to size. I also added some royal icing to stick them down with for extra strength, and did the same with the ones on the bottom. I glued the cones with royal icing. I used green Wilton ready to use icing with a star tip for the grass decoration and small fondant flowers. To assemble and decorate on the day it took 2 hours. It did look really beautiful and everyone said it looked professional. I've never decorated a cake before so I was pleased with how easy it turned out to be!HOWEVER... Transporting it in a traffic jam for 45 mins was a nightmare!!!! As there was a lot if stopping and starting, the top turrets started to wobble and lean. And by the time we got there, they were about to fall. If we hadn't had the skewers in there they wouldn't have lasted 10 minutes on that journey! My advice is, take the turrets that are placed on the cake seperatley and just stick them in when you get there! I think if I'd have given the royal icing more time to harden I wouldn't have had a problem, but as I decorated the morning of the party it was still a bit soft so not gluey at all. Wilton could make it much easier by simply adding plastic dowels to the bottom of the turrets! A bit of a design flaw, but it all turned out ok in the end!

give yourself plenty of time to make this awesome looking cake. it can be as detailed or as simple as you like. it was my grandadughters birthday and she wanted a frozen cake. so instead of flowers i made some tiny white snowflakes. i covered the turrets in royal icing coloured in frozen blue food colouring and coated that with granulated sugar and then glitter. the same treatment for the windows and doors.the cake was baked in a 12 inch cake tin. and two 9 inch sandwhich. i would use a large cake board at least 16 inches so that you can place the pillars around the castle using royal icing at the sides and the base. the pillars on the cake need to be attatched with dowelling rods.make holes on the base of the pillars. the plastic is quite soft using a sharp knife is easy with a pointy tip.allow enough dowelling to hit the base of the top cake board and enough to hit the roof of the pillar.the wilton tip of using icing to stick the pillars on the cake wont do. use the dowels.dont try and make this cake the morning before the party. you need at least 3/4 days. bake and let the fondant icing dry for a day or two before assembling the pillars and windows. and enjoy.everyone loved this cake adults and children alike.it can be made to suit boys as well as girls just by changing colours and themes.you can make 365 flowers and leaves but you can do a simple cake all in white and just decorate the castle parts.

At first I thought the price was a bit steep for some plastic decorating pieces I knew I'd only use once and I can't deny it took a while for myself and my mother to decorate all of them and assemble the whole castle, but in the end the effect was brilliant and the guests were very complimentary! (I have uploaded my own customer image)As a novice in making anything more than a fairly simple cake, it would have been a nightmare trying to make my own turrets, columns, doors etc - getting them to all look the same, and be of the same size. But with this kit, all you need to do is decorate the pieces to your own taste. My one criticism would be the stability of the columns with turrets on top - I was convinced the cake would fall apart as we carried it from the house out to the marquee. In the end we pierced the bottom of the columns (which are hollow) with a compass/small screwdriver and inserted kebab sticks into them, allowing about an inch at the end with which to pierce the cake. I would highly recommend this, even if you aren't planning to move the cake far, it would be such a shame if the whole thing collapsed - and a gentle knock would be enough to do this as the pieces are very lightweight.Overall, aslong as your patient and takes steps to ensure the stability of the columns, you WILL end up with an eye catching and fun cake you and your guests will remember :)

This it a great adaptable set that can can make all sorts of different castle cakes (for boys and girls).I was using a runny icing to cover the turrets -this didn't work too well at first -you need to get the right consistency - i think i would use rolling icing next time.I would make sure you make your cake a day before decorating (to stop any subsidence!)When you have finished decorating the turrets and roof, doors and windows- add all the set to your cake & it will look like (or better than !) a shop bought cake, so you may feel like it may be a big outlay at first - but think about how much it would cost you to buy the cake from a shop for a few years & you can always sell the set on whenyou have finished with it as the set is quite sturdy.A great buy- glad I bought it ;0)

Arrived earlier than expected , very well packaged. An excellent product which can be adapted to use in many different cakes by using some of the parts or all of the parts. Surprised at some reviewers comments that it was just a box of plastic parts. I don't understand this unless they really didn't realise just what they were buying. When used with a little imagination this product will provide the basis for lots of beautiful cakes. The plastic parts can be iced, the icing does adhere very well when icing of a good consistency is properly applied. Great results can be achieved by even the most inexperienced cake decorator. Can I also just add that it was very reasonably priced on Amazon compared to other sites and storesHappily recommend both product and seller.

Loved making this partly because having read the reviews it prepared me for the pitfalls. Used wooden towels for the castle spires. Made hole under them with a small pointed knife. No drilling for me. Took me 5 days. As I decorated all the plastic pieces using royal icing sugar and glitter as a frosting.they need to dry out so do this as far in advance as you can. I baked a 12 inch cake for the base and used a 14 inch cake drum don't use a thin board this cake is a heavyweight. With hindsight I would use at least a 16 inch for the spires to have space on the board. The top tier was a 9 inch cake.I also hid some tiny lights that I bought from.Amazon.you use them in balloons.the cake was a hit everyone loved it adults and princesses alike

I have never decorated a cake before - so for my my daughter's 4th birthday this was ambitious (foolish?!) However, I was thrilled with the results - and more importantly so was she. I did a Frozen theme and stuck little snowflakes all over it instead of the flowers. The towers are a bit of a design flaw in that I wouldn't trust them to stay upright as Wilton have supplied them. My husband drilled holes in the bottom and I used dowels to fix them into the cake. Wish I could post a photo to show how fabulous it looks - I would really recommend it. Took me around 3 hours to do, including baking the two cakes.

This was a God send! Initially I was going to pastillage the turrets, but changed my mind due to lack of time, let's face it that would have taken me an absolute eternity! This looked professional and was still fiddly. What I would say is that a bit of prep is required. Drilling holes in the plastic and inserting dowel rods is absolutely essential and even though I royal iced the Base ones they still collapsed on the journey so I would probably really secure the with as much as you can. The end result is beautiful, but this is not something that you can put together in 5 or even 10 minutes!

Absolutely fab product & quick delivery. I used another reviewer's advice & drilled holes in bottom of turrets. I placed wooden dowels in each turret going on the cake. I sank the dowels all the way through depth of the cake. So glad I did this as the turrets stayed in a fixed position even on a bumpy 30 minute car journey to party venue. Our 10 year old daughter & all her friends raved about the cake. Cake even got "Oooo's" & "Ahhhhh's" from random strangers. You won't be disappointed with this product. You will definately impress and be the envy of all Mammies.

Really impressed with this product- gave a very dramatic finish to the cake.I would say that when I washed them up I left them to soak and water got inside a turret- I had to poke a hole into it to get it out again. So I would recommend just wiping them with the cloth and not submersing in water! Although the hole did mean I could then insert a skewer for extra stability, so I think I will do this with all of them! I thought they were going to be hollow so that you could put a rod into the tube- this would have been better as the top turrets can fall over.

I had been making castle cakes for a few months but just using gumpaste for the turrets, which took ages to dry. I saw this on a friends facebook and bought it. Fantastic it saves me loads of time and provided you use royal icing to stick the turrets down I don't have a problem although I do know some people have said the have trouble with the turrets staying upright on a cake I found no problem. I must admit though I didn't use all the pieces there are enough turrets for 2 cakes.

A good product. Quite sturdy plastic. Would recommend. I am a cake maker and I have used these several times now. Never used all of the turrets at once as I think this looks a bit much. I've also used just one turret on its own on a Rapunzel Tangled cake to represent the tower. Worked well. They work better if inserted into the cake rather than trying to attach them with royal icing at the side of the cake

I love this, had trouble on my first cake keeping the towers up, but sussed it on this one.I cut out with a small round cookie cutter a quarter circle from the corners, and held the towers in place with royal icing. Will do the same on a round cake but a semi circle cut out.I've had requests from all my granddaughters so think I'll be making several more!!A great buy.

Super castle kit. Quite tricky to use if you not used to making cakes I never used dowling rods to put the towers on just pushed in to cake. You need to be organised before you start & do some turret prep the night before decorating the cake. Difficult to transport but the great thing was my daughters face when she saw her princess castle cake. :0
