Well as a video producer and video game player I require a lot of storage space for video footage and games. I found myself running low on space with little room and time to make backups and to delete unnecessary files. So I went browsing and came across this, it has the storage space and the speed for my needs. As a storage hard drive could you ask for any more than this?It was insanely cheap compared to other hard drives of its size (and even hard drives smaller than it).So when it arrived I installed it inside the computer, assigned it correctly in the BIOS and gave it a clean format (Even if it already had been).I've had the hard drive a good couple of weeks now and it's absolutely brilliant,it stores all my music and old video footage perfectly, I can stream the video and music on my home network with ease. I haven't tried installing games onto it yet but it should perform the same as other hard drives. If you haven't already purchased this model of hard drive you're really missing out.The only drawback to this hard drive is the speed, it's not a high speed Solid State Drive, it's what you expect it to be. A fantastic storage hard drive with the ability to house an operating system for gaming, video watching and listening to music. Oh and that ALL hard drives fail eventually ;)Read full review...

Other reviewers have covered this drive in excellent detail, so I won't repeat their reviews. All I can add is that in my PC, I have an SSD drive for the Operating System, and this drive for my files. The only sound from my machine is the fans. I had to keep clicking through the windows explorer to make sure that it was actually connected.I was a little sceptical about the drive speed, but as I was only planning to use for files rather than OS, I thought it should be fine. In addition, though, I would think that the slower spin speed should make for a more reliable drive... however... there is no way to say how reliable the drive is without a few years'use.I bought this to replace a 3 year old Samsung 1TB drive which had developed bad sectors. Every manufacturer can produce the occasional lemon and everyone is susceptible to plain old bad luck; one drive is never enough. If you store important files on your PC, be they photos, music, video or work files, you really really should back them up. Either invest in an another drive (internal or external) and/or cloud-based backups, such as MozyHome.I'm impressed by this drive. For my needs, it seems perfect and I suspect that the slower spin speed should help to reduce wear on the unit.

Having had my hard drive die three years after purchasing my 24" intel iMac, I decided to fix it myself and bought this replacement drive after hunting around the net for recommendations. Installed it yesterday by following a video how-to on youtube and it fired up right away without any issues. I now have a lovely working Mac with 1.5TB of storage split into three partitions for my particular needs. I am no expert on speed tests etc, but it is perfectly find for my needs and everything had copied over without issue. As for quiet, this is silent; you wouldn't even know I had a hard drive in my mac.All in all, I'm really pleased with the result. Sure, I'm only a day in but nonetheless,I feel I can recommend this heartily. 1.5TB of internal storage just feels awesome. As for all the people who say that iMacs are non-upgradable and you can't put a new drive in them, well... you're all wrong. Easy peasy.

I had reservations about purchasing this hdd mainly due to other reviewers saying they are noisy. Well this WD 1.5TB is smooth and quiet too. Having preferred other HDD manufacturers in the past I was unsure about buying from Western Digital, but after buying this one I would definitely buy thiers again. The slower spin speed is not a problem as it is installed in a NAS drive used only for storage. Others may prefer the 7200rpm drives for operating systems, but otherwise this one is very good quality and with the usual 3yr warranty.

This is an inexpensive internal hard drive, quiet, low power consumption, runs cool, high data capacity, easily a good enough data rate for archived files and music. For a small PC build the Western Digital Caviar Green 1.5TB ,or higher, drive could be very useful in a dual-drive computer, with one slot filled by a solid state drive (SSD) and the other by the 1.5TB hard drive. The SSD could be used as a boot and application drive to increase boot-up and load times, and the hard disk drive could be used as the mass storage device.

and i can report that the drive is till going strong. I have found these drives to be very reliable on the whole. Before this I had two Seagate ST31000524AS 3.5 inch Barracuda drives. Both failed in just outside of a year. Thankfully I had a SMART utility running in the background that forewarned me before they failed so I was able to back up my vital info. I had alway thought Seagate drives were excellent quality, but this has changed my opinion. This western digital drive has been super reliable and good value for money.

Bought this drive as main drive in silent low energy self build. The computer is in the bedroom and is left on at night to download files when connection is best. All fans on the computer virtually silent so any noise from drive would be obvious. Reading and writing barely audible. Energy use according to reviews also seems low (one of the reasons I avoided faster drives). Scores 5.9 on windows experience index (Processor AMD910e 7.2, RAM 7.9) good enough for me as willing to sacrifice one point for silence and economy.

My iMac had a 500gb WD Caviar 5000AAKS and as everyone knows it can be quite nerve racking trying to find a replacement drive that is fully compatible and at a good price point. This drive hit both on the nail and I am very happy with the performance. I have been using smcFancontrol to monitor the performance and it has been great. Very happy with the price and performance - all you iMac users looking for a replacement or an upgrade look no further

I got this product when it came I checked and fitted it to my freeview HD recorder and found it was noisy and would not work I took it back out and realized how stupid I was I had ordered the wrong HDD I should have ordered the WD5000AUDX not this one but that was my fault not yours so there is no negative response because all correspondence etc was good I just wish I had checked the model firstGeorge

A nice hard drive with lots of storage, with 1.5TB in total. It does have some problems like sometimes they do go wrong if dropped (not too high about a 1/2 foot or 1 foot drop) or it gets bad sectors from time to time.On the other hand this hard is very fast in accessing file, data or games, with it 5400rpm silent motor and SATA 1 & 2 interface.9.4/10 Hard drive.

i bought the new hard drive a few weeks ago, and was really impressed with the western digital site, which helped for a really easy clone of my old 250GB hard drive. i needed a new hard drive as my old one was very nearly at capacity and was very sluggish. also the price was very reasonable, myself i would recommend the hard drive to anyone looking for a new drive.

Fitted this to a Topfield PVR in place of the 7200rpm WD Disk originally fitted. When I switched on I thought it was faulty but then I heard a slight click and the Topfield asked to format it. Putting my ear to it confirmed it was rotating. So now the humming noise of the previous disk is a thing of the past and I have a silent PVR with oodles of disk space.

Upgrading from 250GB in my NAS drive to this was simple. Open the NAS box, pop this in and switch on. Thats all there is to it. Read lots of reviews criticising the drive because of "green" firmware, apparently drive fails due to power conservation protocols, i havent seen this yet, so am very happy. Speed is super quick, loads of space to fill.

I received this item sealed ,unformatted. windows7 needs to detect a formatted drive so I did this first and then installed the operating system, the drive runs very smooth with very little noise ,installed over 2 weeks ago and ive had no problems.I would recommend this Hard drive to anyone wanting to upgrade.

I find Green Drives to be best for storage or digital content. They are not very fast and they do not like excessive strain. I find it best to have a drive for your OS and one of these as a secondary although I have got a system running just a 500GB for boot and storage and it holds up just fine.
