Seamless installation of Windows 7 and Debian Linux, the drive was recognized straight away by both operating systems.Fantastic speeds on this drive, according to benchmarks it has a faster read/write speed than the WD Black equivalent! This drive isn't completely silent, if that's what you require. I can't normally hear it because I have two loud fans cooling my system, but I did power up the drive without anything else and could hear that it emits a relatively loud hum for a hard drive compared to my old Pipeline HD 2.5" drive. However, most likely you will not be able to hear it installed in your system considering all the other components emitting noise also. The drive is surprisingly thin for a 3.5''drive, great if you are installing in a compact HTPC or similar build. Compared to my ancient Maxtor SATA I 3.5" drive it looks much, much thinner! And also lighter.Overall this is a decent 1TB hard drive. I chose it over the Western Digital Caviar Blue as the Blue's speed drastically decreases when it becomes more full, due to the drive plate filling up systematically from the outside to the inside, causing longer movements of the spindle and therefore longer reading/writing times.I will edit my review in a year to reflect the longevity of the drive.

I use an SSD as my main drive, and this one for storage. It is a single platter, giving it less potential points for mechanical failure, and is thinner than most multi-platter drives. So far it has been working fine, and I have but one complaint: Seagate have made the baffling decision to include an energy saving head-parking feature in the firmware, similar to that found in WD Greens. This means that if the drive is inactive for more than about 30 seconds, the heads park, making an annoying clicking noise and taking a second to move back again when you next access the disk. While the jury seems to be out on whether excessive head parking actually damages the drive, it's certainly damn annoying, and I was forced to download software which turns this feature off every time the computer boots (as you can't save the modified settings). This isn't a deal-breaker, and if you use this as your OS drive it may be kept busy enough that the head never parks at all, but it is certainly something to bear in mind when considering this drive. As Philip comments, a firmware update is available which purports to fix the issue. However, when I tried to apply it I received an error message, so your mileage may vary there.

I needed a hard drive to replace a failing one in my DELL Dimension 3100 desktop. When I investigated the specifications, some hard drives were not recommended as primary drives so I settled on this one, the 1TB Seagate ST1000DM003 Barracuda. For £54.55 my computer is transformed. The old 160GB one is now in the bin and a shiny new 1TB one is in the computer bay. The drive arrived very quickly, 2 days earlier than promised. The drive is half the thickness of the old one, but fits in securely. Following online instructions, I re-enstalled Windows from a CD, which was long-winded but without any problems (unlike my efforts to re-enstall on the old drive). The computer is now really fast for a small outlay.I previously increased the RAM to a maximum 2GB which is also a cheap upgrade to increase performance. After the hard drive installation, I checked out all the systems of the computer using the excellent (and free online) Belarc Advisor and everything is fine. I am really pleased to have rescued a computer which was destined for the skip and can continue using my trusted and familiar operating system, Windows XP3 Professional, without reprogramming my brain for the dreaded Windows 8 on a new desktop.

I was a bit worried about buying a new hard drive as you get all these reviews saying how theirs were so loud with all the grinding and clicking but i was trying to get an old computer up and running and thought i should replace the old 250gb drive. I got the h/d after 2 days and the first thing i noticed was how much thinner this drive was! It was the first time i'd changed a hard drive, the first time i'd taken both sides off the comp' (i thought the motherboard was on the other side to the vents!) but when i did and looked at what i had to do, nothing could be simpler, Disconnect 2 wires and undo 4 screws, slide it out and slide the other one in, the difference in thickness made no difference, just lift slightly to the screw holes, no problem!I reconnected, put it all back together and started it up, put in the o.s & motherboard discs and i now have a working computer that i can upgrade at my leisure! The hard drive itself has(so far)worked perfectly, without any sound at all noticeable. The computer recognizes it as just below 1TB but i think that's normal. Let's hope it keeps running as it is!Read full review...

Now I have had this since the fall of November 2014 and for the past 3 months this has not run into any complications at any point. It is just your average joe HDD from Seagate the barracuda series has always served me well and I will see to it that I may never need to change from it. This HDD when even filled to the brim at one point, never slowed down and while on that subject for Windows 7 users on the NTFS Format with full updates you get 931GB to spare.Pro's of this HDD mainly are this. The HDD is dead silent and only makes a small amount of noise during heavy loads such as transferring files and playing games at the same time.Vibration haters?well if you had not thought of using rubber screw mounts when it is the cage it does not vibrate that much atall without them. For those that are worried that if you leave this alone in some bad airflow part of your case, this generates very little heat like most HDD's and can do fine on passive cooling itself. My overall opinion.Works fine, no real trouble through what would be 2 reinstalls of OS and is nice for those that want a silent pc.

I will review this 4* to a 5* if the drive still works in 6 months' time.Works perfectly at the moment, no compatibility problems with SATA II/III in my Mac. It is by far faster than my ailing Seagate Barracuda ST31000340AS (previous generation), also a 1TB. The parameters for this one, especially "seek error rate", "temperature" changes and "Hardware ECC recovered" fares by far better than the previous generation 1TB listed. My machine does run faster, too. So far, so good.NB: delivery of the item was awful (done by "amazon", rather than Royal Mail or so). Card was dumped near a public pavement OUTSIDE (nowhere near my flat), Ifound it by off chance. And the young delivery driver - on redelivery - was moaning about having to climb stairs, so I was forced to meet him halfway (altogether, there are only 45 steps (3 small stair cases of 15 steps). Whilst this does not affect the product, and no stars have been removed, it reflects on amazon's "delivery".

Ordered two of these, free standard shipping came two days later was checking the email updates on shipping on the day to see exactly when they would come, good packaging, brand new. Got these because they score highly on benchmark website hdd.userbenchmark.com.Plugged them into the SATA 600 sata plugs on my motherboard and made a RAID 0 (stripe) from them. Using benchmarking tool "Crystal Disk Mark" I'm getting 524Mb Sequential read and 226Mb write. For comparison one of my normal hard drives is only 90 read and 80 write. The advertised SSD speeds on something like a crucial is 550 read/write.So I got a 2terabyte good/happy with performance for £88.Whilst a 256gb crucial would be £90-103For futher comparison I attached the same RAIDed Barracudas to the SATA 300 sata plugs on my motherboard and got 449 Seq read, 190 write. So use the Sata 600 plugs for a performance boost, but it won't be a big deal if you use the Sata 300 plugs.

I chose this as the Seagate 7200.14 series gets the highest benchmark scores on review sites, and its one of the cheapest.Updated firmware, installed seatools but seatools does not recognise the disk (but windows7 does), strange...Performance is good but seems inconsistent at times. It makes a strange annoying scraping noise for half a sec every few minutes, apparently this is the read/write head being "parked" to save energy (unfortunately this over-aggressive energy saving feature cannot easily be changed)Had it for 2 months so far, so can't comment on reliability, will update review if something happens.UPDATE June 2014:still working fine. no probs.Update Jan-2017:still working fine

I bought this for my sisters PC. It was one of the cheapest at the time, which influenced my decision. The drive is very typical of most other drives you'd find from any other company. Many people claim that Seagate drives have low reliability, however, for every story you hear about this company, there is another very similar story for every other manufacturer out there, so I wouldn't let the bad reviews put you off too much. If you're wanting reliability, you should probably look into a backup solution like a NAS, a cloud service or RAID.I have actually had a Seagate drive fail on me, however, it was being abused for eight years, so you can expect it to die at some point.

HD drives continue to come down in price or you get a better bang for your buck. My research indicates that Seagate have a good reputation for performance and reliability as well as value for money and this drive doesn't disappoint. The 7200rpm and 64MB cache makes this a great performing drive and as it is being used for a home recording studio this is important. I also bought a second drive, which I never intended to do, but I just couldn't resist because of the impressive performance. Great performance and great value. Recommended.

For the price and "£ per MB", I think it is very good value. Is it quick, well it isn't an SSD or a hybrid drive, but it shows my load limes are faster, compared to my 500GB SATA II drive, but maybe that's all down to this being an SATA III drive? maybe 20%.I use my pc almost daily, so things tend to clutter up a bit with temp files, so I defrag maybe 2-3 times a month, and Norton cleans up temporary files for me, so I keep my system fairly clean / as streamlined as possible.considering a 2nd one, for a RAID array.

I needed a hard drive to replace a very sick and noisy one in my home desktop. I took a chance with this 1TB Seagate Barracuda and having used it for only three weeks I am very impressed, very quiet quick but not lightning fast and registering 5.9 on the windows performance test. My system is an i7 Intel set up with 2gig graphics card and 16gig of ram and so far I'm very happy with this hard drive. I will give it another couple of months and if all's well I will definitely buy another and for £54 you can't go wrong.

My partner's desktop Mac was running horribly slow. Something we do not expect of a Mac! Some research pinpointed the hard drive. With prices this good it was worth a shot and with an upgrade to the cache and double the memory to boot. Pardon the pun! With the assistance of my friends nifty tool kit (highly recommended) and with the assistance of the magnificent Youtube, I fitted the new drive. Lots of reloading of programs and data but all is working more perfectly than when she first bought the machine.

Plug and play apart from the usual Windows drive letter allocation. I use 8.1 running two hdds my No1 Hitachi drive less than two years old was starting to show S. A.M.A.R.T errors, loaded my stored back-up image on to the new Seagate and and every thing was saved with out any file loss. I was concerned when the drive arrived with very little protective packaging but then I am old enough to remember when 40 mb hdds came wrapped in fairy's wings to protect them from the real world.Esme

14.10.2014

Snappy hard drive at a good price, only thing to watch is it has a lower profile than usual for 3.5 " drives which is fine for most people, but mine was to go into a drobo without any trays, as a result it wouldn't sit safely or securely in the drive, so I ended up swapping this one out into an external case and buying a Western Digital one instead the was a conventional height and worked better, good drive though and to date has been very reliable.
