All I can say is that Western Digital have made a great HD and at such a brilliant price it is unbeatable. It started to work the moment I installed it in my NETGEAR ReadyNAS Duo V2, it's quiet and, as far as I can tell, running cool at a temp of 31 degrees C within my NAS.I would definitely recommend this drive to anyone who wanted to install it into a home file server or a network attached storage device. The one problem of concern I have was that the HD, though working properly, was not protectively packed well enough. The HD was in an appropriately sized box and that box was packed within another bigger package which contained two more ordered items. However,I feel that the amount of bubble wrapping used to protect the HD was inadequate, someone skimped on the wrapping which in turn put the HD at risk and so could still be shaken within its smaller box.I have bought other OEM HDs before, from other suppliers, and their bubble wrapping was more than adequate.I plan to buy another 2TB Caviar Green HD but I don't think I'll take the chance of the disk being damaged in transit by using Amazon's current supplier again.UPDATE - 03 January 2013 --------------------------------I took the chance and purchased another 2TB Caviar Green HD from Amazon, despite my reservations noted above, and for the knock down price of £70. And I must say that the packaging of this product was excellent, which is a far cry from how the first disk was delivered. The packaging contained an outer box, filled with enough packing paper to absorb any bumps or rough handling in transition. The inner box, containing the HD, held the disk so firmly that it could not move about. And finally, the anti-static bag containing the HD had an anti-moisture sachet in it.All in all, this is the best packed HD I have ever had from a supplier, along with the quality of the Caviar Green and the killer retail price of £70.00 this is now a 5 star product for packaging and for the WD 2TB Caviar Green SATA HD.

My blank 1TB Hitachi failed on Friday at 6.30pm on a rebuild and with nowhere to obtain a replacement I turned to Amazon and had placed my order by 6.59pm. I spent 5 minutes looking at various deals and selected this drive inhaste. I didn't look at the specs at all knowing that if it wasn't up to mustard It could always be returned. The drive arrived at 10am Saturday morning and went straight into my old Dell which recognised it. Did a full reinstall of windows 7 without any issue and relaoding all my data now. The drive is astonishingly quiet. The PC fan makes more noise compared to my old Hitachi drive so well pleased on that side. As regards performance the drive is responsive and I've yet to fiddle with any settings to optimise power use.Overall so far I'm pleased.I've read the other comments about drive speeds, problems and performance and honestly you have to accept that it is impossible to make any electromechanical device that is impervious to failure. I have 4 Hitachi 1TB drives and 1 just failed in 4 years. That may be the equivalent to a 25% failure rate (to me) but that is not a true measure so I think it is more sensible to understand that sometimes things do go wrong and someone will always be on the receiving end of being the person that suffers a drive failure. What is more important to recognise is support. The manufacturers may well have delays to process RMAs outside the first 12 months but up to then Amazon will take care of you by return which is first class. What they may not pay in UK taxes certainly goes back into customer support! Lol!

I have just reviewed a USB 3.0 docking station with USB card reader and my review is in relation of this HDD with that utility. I have had for a couple of years now, an eSATA docking station so that I could use drives without the need for opening the PC case. It was OK but firmware issues meant I had to reboot the PC if I wanted to change the disk, hot swapping wouldn't work. With the USB 3.0 one, this has changed and opened up horizons for out-of-caddy drives. Enough of the prequel. I already have one of these drives (WD20EAX, so very slightly different). This I use for backup of my home-studio which generates something up to 100GB of data per song (96kHz) where a single instrument in one track easily surpasses 200-300 MB.This data is precious and irreplaceable as you can imagine, so reliability is the word. The studio has the performance scratch disks so what I needed was efficient, dependability. These drives deliver that in abundance. Low power and on the USB 3.0 docker, backups churn away quietly at a respectable 100 MBpS which means I'm not waiting around forever. I have a couple now so take one off-site to ensure that if there is a fire or some other disaster, I have backups to a few days ago secure in another location.I wouldn't use one of these for a scratch disk for video or audio work but they have a huge thumbs up for storage & retrieval. 10/10 WD.

There are a few different versions of this drive with slightly different geometries (a few more or a few less sectors) and different buffer memory. This is the OEM version which is usually supplied in an anti-static sleeve and sold in bulk to computer builders. As such, it will not have the normal retail packaging, fixing screws or the information leaflet. You can buy the screws in packs of about 100 quite cheaply or you may be able to beg a few from anyone who builds or repairs computers. Functionally, there is no other difference between OEM and retail versions. The OEM version tends to be slightly less expensive. As it does not have the normal protection that the retail pack would normallyprovide and it has been known for some sellers to do rather stupid things when despatching OEM drives. If you should be a victim to one of these sellers, and purchased via Amazon, I would suggest that you return the drive for refund, purchase from a supplier with more understanding of the product and complain to Amazon! The distinguishing feature of the Caviar Green series is that the motor speed is not constant. In normal use when writing or reading, it will operate at it maximum rotational speed but when inactive, the motor will slow. This will save a proportion of it its normal wattage. It does mean that the drive needs a moment to reach maximum speed from a lower one.

I decided to pay a few pence extra and get the one sold and shipped directly by Amazon, in hopes that it would avoid the issues I've had with some of the marketplace sellers on these drives - such as receiving a Recertified drive rather than a new one, and having to go through the RMA process and ship it back. I figured, Amazon themselves would be less likely to pull such shenanigans, and in the case they did, surely the RMA process would be easier. So all is well, the drive seems fine, has had no problems in my ReadyNAS Duo so far after replacing a faulty drive and restriping the X-Raid onto this drive. All drive tests passed fine. However, one slight concern regarding, ironically,Amazon shipping...Here's the packaging feedback I left for Amazon:The hard drive arrived in the typical amazon economy pack, the same one you get when you order a book. It was just inside the box, in a static bag, with no other foam/bubble-wrap/air-pack or other protective material. On the one hand it was securely packed, and could not move around inside the packaging. But on the other hand I would have liked to see it packed with something a bit more cushioned and protective. I've never received a hard drive in this way and I was a bit shocked. Anyway the drive tested out fine so I guess we got lucky.

In response to Terry Knibb's comment from 5 Nov. 2013. I encountered the same problem with the product warranty with Western Digital, that is, a six week deduction on the 2-year manufacturer's warranty. It is very easy to resolve this problem and get the full warranty.Go to the WD Support Portal (https://westerndigital.secure.force.com/ind/?lang=en) and set up an account (click 'REGISTER NOW!'). Only a few details are required and the process takes just a couple of minutes. Once registered, it is then possible to log in to the account. After doing so, click 'REGISTER PRODUCT(S)' and enter the relevant details. And that's it. The product details are shown along with the purchase date and an expiry date reflecting the full 2-year warranty.Additionally, a confirmatory message is sent to the customer's e-mail address.Details can be confirmed by going to http://support.wdc.com/warranty/index_end.asp?lang=en and clicking on the 'Warranty Check' button. Enter the product Serial Number and the warranty expiry date is confirmed, indicating a full 2-year warranty. So, to summarise, customers can buy Western Digital products from Amazon, confident that the goods come with a full warranty.

Have been running perfectly (touch wood) for a year now. They are used in my Synology NAS box and the only change I made to the drives was to change the time between parking heads, being the green range of drive they park their heads almost immediately after being used. This can cause unnecessary strain on the drive especially when using in a NAS when videos and images are streamed from it. I would say if you are happy to make this small change (using some WD available software) it will be a good saving if you want to sort out your NAS box on a budget as the WD Red NAS drives can double the price! The read times are fine when streaming video files and the only slowness felt is when first engaging the drives to navigate the files, once loaded though runs perfectly fine.I prefer Western Digital drives over the likes of Seagate as they do a much better job of Quality Control than Seagate and if you read up on reviews and data statistics from Data Centers their drives hold up much better. Also being 2TB its avoided the nasty problem with the 3TB drives that both Seagate and WD were having trouble with for a while.

Received the drive a day early. Plus.No screws, but it said this in the description. Come on, really, you cannot insert four screws? No cable, ditto, said in the description. I do not recall any drive I ever purchased where it came with a cable.Installation went fine - no plus or minus to WD. Good design goes to HP.The software was readily available via a google search to the WD site. The imaging, however, did not tell me I *needed* to create a boot disk. I tried to clone twice without a boot disk and it did not clone.I created a boot disk, boot, and began the clone process. It is at about 75% right now.Well, I will have to come back and update later.Update: The clone process, as they call it,took about 90 minutes. Your time may vary due to hard-drive speed and capacity. My old drive was 500GB and 5400 RPM.I rebooted to ensure the new drive did indeed have the right files on it and it did. I just like to double check things.Powered down, swapped the SATA cables from old to new - left both drives in, but now the old one is the boot drive.Rebooted and everything is splendid. Thank you WD!

At this price you can't go wrong. The drive label says it was made 1214 (December 2014), and as this is May 2015 they obviously haven't flown off the shelves in the past.I fitted the drive (I had my own spare Sata power cable and data cable as it is an OEM Drive). The formatting NTFS took seconds. Moving the collections of data from an old drive took place at an average 143 gigabytes per hour, somewhere around 40Mbps.Checking the drive out using SMARTMONTOOLS (opensource software) showed this to be a brand new drive as advertised and I was the first user. The drive is very quiet (however my case is fairly sound proof) and the drive only ever reached 37 degree centigrade, that's after nearly a full working days'uninterrupted writing at the above speed.I'm looking forward to more than 5 years problem free usage if this drive lives up to the same quality as my other Western Digital drives. This drive was purchased to replace a 1.5GB drive made by another manufacturer that the SMARTMONTOOLS says is developing problems after over 8 years.

Ordinarily I wouldn't clutter up Amazon with a review noting that a defective item was supplied. As usual, Amazon promptly issued a replacement which works fine. However, in this case I note from other reviews that reports of defective drives - and interestingly of inadequate packaging - are commonplace. So maybe it wasn't a totally random occurrence. My disk was supplied protected only by an anti-static bag and some screwed up paper *on top only* with the bottom just sitting against the small cardboard box. The drive was totally non-functional and after wasting hours testing every conceivable which way but loose, I returned it to Amazon for replacement. The product itself is fine - if you want high performance, don't buy the Green model. Buy the Black. Green is the energy-saving option, which is exactly what I wanted. However you might want to factor in the increased risk of receiving a duff drive (whether it's a production issue or Amazon's packaging, I can't tell) and the inconvenience of having to replace it.

I received my Western Digital Caviar Green 2 TB Desktop Hard Drive WD20EARX within two days of ordering it. I am using it in my Thermaltake Max 5G with active cooling, which I also bought through Amazon. The WD 2T drive started up immediately, accepted the drivers, which my Windows 7 software loaded into it, and I immediately formatted the new 2TB hard drive using my Windows 7 software by right clicking on "Computer," then clicking on "Manage" and then "Disk Management." So far I am extremely happy with the new Western Digital 2TB hard drive. Speed is not of concern to me since the Thermaltake Max 5G uses a USB 3 interface to the computers I hook to it for backup. Earlier,I had also bought a 2TB WD "My Book Live" Home Network Drive through Amazon, which I use for network backups of all my three house computers, two Windows 7s and one Visa Computer. The Vista laptop computer uses the wireless interface to "My Book Live." The WD My Book Live is also working great!

Bought as a backup drive for my 'file server'. Pretty happy with it so far, though it has hardly had time to settle in. No fuss, no messing about on a Windows XP SP3 (x86) system. The only snag is the SATA connectors on the motherboard just about hit the back of the hard disk. Hardly a fault of the drive though!Six months later and the thing is hardly half full. Transferring old holiday video to DVD? This drive has the raw files on it. Using 'Virtual machine' to play around with windows? The 'file sets' are on here. Archiving the families photos? Yes, cameras, iPhones, there old PC's, are are on here. This thing has swallowed everything and hasn't need to burp yet.I have not bothered to speed test it,as that was not the reason for buying it. Space. Pure and simple. And this drive has loads of it.13-04-2014. Well it is just about full now, but it is still going strong. Not used daily as it is in the 'storage' PC. But it by far from gathering dust.

The only thing you can ever be sure about a hard drive is that at some point it will fail - its just when! I bought this to add to my system as a second drive purely for storing Acronis backups of my main drive. It works very well, transfer speeds are more than adequate and my fan control shows the operating temperature never gets above 27C even when transferring data over a prolonged period (a backup takes a couple of hours). I have owned many different drives from most manufacturers since my first IBM 20mb in the mid 80's and there has not been one maker that stands out from any of the others as far as I am concerned.Until a drive actually fails you don't know how reliable it will be and again from my own experience I have bought 2 identical drives with one failing after a couple of months and the other going on for 4 or 5 years before it started to develop bad sectors.

Well, considering linux almost useless on a SSD for the matter of fact that his file system is the best in place, I opted for this western digital HD. For the price that offer, a minimum bundle of cables and screws could have been a nice courtesy but, anyway, I prevented this by the time I figured out the already scarce bundle of my latest 600+ pound machine. I must say is not bad for a sort of "old iron" tech, it does the job and, of course, a better OS structure helps a lot too. Tested on the latest Ubuntu 14.04 x64 distro, installation was about 18 min. circa (including installation options and network setup), nothing particularly relevant to say cause the OS chargement is faster than Windows and doesn't surprise me anymore.Good quality, not too noisy, easy to set up, cheap solution against SSD speculators! Highly recommended.

The hard drive is quite good, especially for the money, replacing an old Samsung HD204UI in a raid 1 config.I just purchased the drive today, it's still in the sealed antistatic bag.- Didn't come as Retail version, was packed in some white box only.- Also the warranty on that drive is already running for several months, thus I won't have full warranty as of today.- Original WD warranty label on the bag had another label stuck on top of itFirst I checked the warranty on WD website, looks like the hard drive is pre-registered already / sold before. It's still new (sealed), but I wanted to have the 2yrs warranty not just 1.5yrs...EDIT:I contacted WD customer service, registered my new HDD,and send them my Amazon invoice. They set the warranty to two years now, so at the end there was nothing to worry about.
