UPDATE BELOW.Origianl comment: 2/5 starsI have been using and buying WD drives for 12 years with hardly any complaints and I have bought this one before with no problems. The first problem I had was the serial number was spat oput by the WD website as invalid. I contacted WD who are/have dealt with it. Then a week later I found the drive playing up, not being recognised by an otherwise fine motherboard. When I used HDTune pro it threw up HUNDREDS of BAD sectors, I was absolutely DISGUSTED. I have never had this problem before ESPECIALLY with WD drives. I reckon (and hope) that I was sent a dud drive as the packaging was the WORST I have ever seen, just LOOSE in a box!I have since returned this drive and received a refund even before it even got back to the Amazon warehouse, EXCELLENT service! I have since ordered another drive from ebay with the hope it should be ok.The problem is that there is only really two choices of har drive brand (except for ssd which are still far too expensive) which is WD or Seagate (absolute junk!) because Samsung and Toshiba drives are made by junkgate to :-(UPDATE: Oct. 13thI bought the exct drive from Ebay for the same price and it has been absolutely FLAWLESS, and it has got a two year warranty. I think I just got unlucky this timeas I also ordered two used drives from ebay and they to are fine. I have decided to upgrade this review to four stars as I just think I got unlucky with an occasional bad drive :-)However I still stand by what I said about Seagate and derivative makes likes Samsung, Toshiba, Lacie, and Maxtor, all made by Seagate, are unreliable.

I was looking for replacement storage drive for my PC. It was a choice between this one or the WD Black 1TB. This at the time I bought it was £43.50, the WD Black was £55 so not much difference. My issue with the Black drive if you look at the reviews was the really shoddy packaging and too many people with DoA (Dead on Arrival) Drives.Thankfully the packaging was good when it arrived, inside the box was another box holding the drive securely. So I opted for this one. Given I was replacing a 500GB Hitachi Deskstar from 2007 any modern drive was sure to be a decent upgrade. I should also note I just outgrew the Deskstar, that hardy little bugger was fine,no drive errors at all.Once installed it was of course night and day compared to the Deskstar, it offered 50mb/s on read and write. This WD is giving me 190mb/s read and write, so certainly for me the speed at which I can move things about is quite a novelty.WD drives are generally pretty darn good. Don't be fooled into thinking SSD is the only way to go. If you have a standard PC that does not see gaming or other intensive disk requests then this type of drive will do just fine.Pictures of the two drives attached.

Brilliant drive, as before this I was using a WD 1TB Green drive as my primary boot up plus to store literally everything else, so I was only left with about 20gb of space left, and with being a gamer that's constantly undecided on what to play I didn't want to uninstall and keep re-installing my games every time I wanted to play them. So i picked up a Kingston Hyper X 120gb SSD for BF4 and my OS and this to store My games and steam account etc. Leaving my WD green as a media and general crap storage. The drive was pretty easy to install with already having the extra power connectors and Sata leads(PLEASE MAKE SURE that you have the leads for this as they don't include them in the box.)The improvements this has over my WD green are a big improvement especially with loading times of games etc. I know this is no WD Black, but it has been proven that the WD Black doesn't really prove that much better than the WD Blue drives. So all in all, if your lucking for a decent brand, decent drive, loads of storage and decent load times then I definitely recommend this drive to you, whether it be for extra storage or a replacement.

I finally lost my patience with my old hard drive. I did not want to spend a lot, but i was looking for a sata iii drive. This one had good reviews and all the technical specification i was looking for.Having cloned my original drive to this new drive i was able to simply swap out the old 250gb and put in this new drive. What a difference immediately. Instead of waiting nearly 5 minutes to boot windows it was up and running within a couple of minutes. I managed to remove the recovery partitions and can now use the entire space as a single partition.I had previously run some diagnostics against my sata ii drive before installing this one. I re-ran the tests and could see a huge difference.Typically it gives 4 times the throughput of data - that is 4 times faster. This is born out in every day use. The operating system is now ready to use in a fracion of the time and applications and files are loading much faster. For those looking for a cheap alternative to SSD look no further. Check you have the correct connectors and do some before and after tests. Now i am looking forward to a few years of trouble free computing...

one of the best value mech drives for general use in desktop environment, the EZEX is much faster than the older EALX WD blue 1Tb, I have both in my rig. Samsung magician reports this as being significantly better than the older model blues. They have low failure rates compared to equal performing competition aside from hitachi who make some which are just as reliable and perform similar (some things a little better somethings a little less but almost identical realworld).WD Black not worth the extra anymore IMO with the price of reliable SSDs as they use more power than blues (ssd's use much less) and get hotter I found. Greens are great for backup and media storage but not good enough for general purpose for various reasons, but that isn't what they're made for. I use samsung evo 840 along side WD Blue 1Tbs as main drives. Only time I consider adding a different drive to a rig is for 3Tb greens for photo archiving or large raw file libraries. For general purpose desktop drive these are hard to fault and my go to for that purpose for a while now and likely to stay so if continue down this route.

I had bought one of these drives a year or so ago and was so impressed I bought another, you cant get a stronger recommendation than that! Both disks are now used as high capacity disks for back ups as disks 7 and 8 (disks 1-6 being Samsung solid state drives for everyday tasks and storage of photo, music and video. If you are using SSD (solid state disks) as your main storage media I would certainly suggest backing up to valuable date to standard SATA drives and these fit the bill perfectly. My view has always been you cant have enough backups and time after time my stance has proved to be the most valuable of self imposed rules. These drives are just perfect for everyday use and irrespective of application (computer, sky box, media drive etc) totally dependable. They are 1G drives so no problems with 2G issues on some motherboards and OS's. Buy with confidence. Quick state of the art drives and top of range status. Thanks Colin.

This came through the post a couple of weeks ago, as needed it in order to build the rest of my gaming PC. I am now running Windows 7 on this and also on my old 500 gig hard drive I am running Linux Mint Qiana Cinnamon 14.4, installed on the same machine. It works flawlessly. I have 4 gig of ram, which is the maximum on my Foxconn 45cmx series Motherboard.Because I run Linux I had no problem, formatting this drive to NTFS (New Technology Filing System) which is the format for Windows. For any newbies out there, who are intending to build a gaming machine, or are looking to install a new operating system, I highly recommend this 1TB Desktop Hard Drive. Runs perfectly. Why have I got two operating systems?I use Linux to shop on line with, send emails, watch XBMC on. Windows is purely for Gaming as Windows has it all there for you. It's such a shame that Linux does not run the same games so easily. A great price for a great drive.

I can confirm I received the single platter 64mb cache version of the 1TB WD Blue HDD.Great price for a very fast mechanical at 180mb/s sequential read and I believe that makes it faster than its more expensive brother the WD Black, which is bizzare. (No wonder they don't make a Blue in a larger capacity as it would comepletely cannibalize the WD Black's market!)Loses 1 mark for being fairly noisy as it has a constant whirring noise like a fan, which is in comparison to my 3 other mechanical HDDs which are much quieter but still 7200 RPM drives like the Blue.Note: I have a Nanoxia DS1 case which is a noise dampening case, so anything that adds to audability of my PC then I will notice it right away. For most people you will simply shrug your shoulders and say "I can't notice it".

This hard drive came very well packaged with next day delivery. I hadn't realised that with this being a modern drive with a fast rpm, it wouldn't work straightaway in an older Mac (my husband has an old G5 which didn't recognise the drive when we installed it) however after a lot of searching online I found a solution and now everything works fine. It needs a small jumper peg (which I think is called a mini jumper that you can buy very cheaply from the likes of Maplin) placing over pins 5 and 6 to slow down the rpm of the drive to allow older machines to read it. Once we did this and installed the drive again it was recognised by the G5, we were able to initialise it and all was fine.Photos of jumper pegs and one in a drive are attached for reference.

This is an excellent drive. After my own HDD died a rather sudden death, I ordered this. I cloned my most recent backup onto this WD and it worked straight away without issue. Particularly impressed with the speed. I do realise that it is new and straight out of the factory but I am still pleasantly surprised with the performance.Hard drives are by in large much of a muchness now, therefore it was the good price that swayed me to purchase this particular drive; but I have no problem in recommending it and would have no hesitation in ordering one again. Have been using it for a few weeks now and under a heavy workload, it has performed well.

The WD Blue drive performs extremely well. It is a lot faster than the WD Green drive I used before (7200RPM vs 5400RPM spin speed), and around the same level of sound (barely audible). The only thing is that it does gain a higher temp than the WD Green (28C vs 24C), but not worth my concern.I use my WD Blue mainly for mass storage, but I also tested it with a Windows 7 installasion, and Windows 7 does boot fast for a mechanical drive. Not as fast as my SSD of course, but better than any mechanical drive I have owned before.I highly recommend this drive for mass storage, or for a budget build.

Just bought this drive and ordered it today, bought it as a replacement for my 1tb Toshiba drive which was always rapidly clicking and on the verge of death i reckon. So far this drive hasn't been a bother the boot times are quite snappy for a mechanical drive, can't comment on longevity as i've only had it one day but so far so good. However my one complaint is that the packaging wast the best, the drive was placed in a small cardboard box with no bubble wrap and left to bounce around a little but the drive i received is perfectly new and working so props there,

Used this drive in addition to an ssd in my gaming rig. This serves as mass storage whilst the ssd is purely for boot/os. Everything runs fantastically. There is definitely a place in every pc for a mechanical hard drive, and this one serves me well. File transfers are quick enough that 4k footage generally doesn't take too long and photo editing is pretty painless which surprised me. I've had it a year and it performs as well as when I got it. Did exactly what I wanted it to do, and a little bit more.

As one would expect from Western Digital, this Caviar Blue 500GB drive is excellent. It is quiet running and does not get excessively hot, which can be a major factor when you have a number of them in a drive bay.One feature of note is that although sold as a SATA III (6GB/S) it can be jumpered down to SATA II (3GB/S) so if you only have SATA II at the moment, but may move onto SATA III it is worthwhile investing in this drive as it will move up with you, yet be totally happy in your existing system.
